Hi. I haven't found a Hardy in my direct line, but then again I do not have all siblings children yet either. But I do have a lot of Carroll family members in Franklin County, NC in the 1800's so he might be in my family. I do not have any Dempsey Carroll in my records yet either. is there an obituary for him that lists his family members?

Hello: Through paper trails, I think I found my GGGF, Henry Carrol(l) in County Down in 1841 who married Mary McKibbon in 1840 at the Second Presbyterian Church, Killinchy. Do any of these names ring a bell? Also, are you a member of the Carroll Surname Y-DNA research?

Hi Jim,

It’s been a long time since we last talked about our Dempsey’s. I’m glad you now have a Carroll in the Y-DNA project, but if the lineages are intact, then the 9/12 mismatch is not a close match. However, one can’t base much on 12 alleles.

Just for clarification, the Hardy who was hanged is not my direct lineage, but MAY be related.

I’ve been almost totally out of genealogy for a long while. A Great-grandmother has health issues and a need to be with close family and friends. I know nothing at all about the Family Finder Test, but my daughter has just received a kit and we will be learning a little about it soon.

I don’t understand how the atDNA test shows relatedness, but I can tell you that ONE Dempsey, Jr. left Sampson County, NC, paused in SC for a while, and then was in AL. I have reason to believe that he was my GGG-Granduncle.

I don’t know the John you mention, but these Sampson/Duplin families had lots of children. Many of them went missing from the area between 1800 and 1820. I know one John W. Carroll who moved from the northern part of Sampson County, NC to Gibson County, TN in 1848, but our DNA doesn’t match that family.

I can put you in touch with descendants of both Dempsey, Jr. and John W. if you think they may be your men.

Keep researching and sharing your information. The CARROLL DNA Project seems to be lacking in the active leadership we had at first. I don’t know why.

Lura

I am a descendent of James Carroll born approximately 1859 in Ireland, arrived in the US around 1875, married Hanna (Johanna) Hogan and settled in Hartford, CT. He died in 1889 in Hartford. I do not know where he originated in Ireland but it could have been in the vicinity of Dublin. His father was Malachi Carroll and his mother's name was Mary Keating I believe. Anyone think they could have a connection?

Hello Michelle,

I read your question about Clara (WATTERS) NOBLE , and yes, Clara married her first husband’s brother Ernest NOBLE at Siskiyou County in 1928. However, they died on the same day in 1934, so I’m guessing they died in an auto accident. You can order their marriage or death certificates at http://www.co.siskiyou.ca.us/Assessor/recorder.aspx

I hope this helps.

Linda Freeman
weedmuseum.org

Lura,

I'm glad you mentioned the Y-DNA results again. It looks like your Duplin Co, NC CARROLLs are R1b1a2a1a1b4b. I descend from a Dempsey CARROLL b 1711 Westmoreland Co, VA; d 1776 Loudoun Co, VA. Some of his children married in Fauquier Co, VA and moved to western VA. His son Dempsey CARROLL b 1740 VA, died 1806 in Mason Co, KY. A descendant has been Y-DNA 12 tested as R1b1a2, but he is 9/12 mismatch with your NC line. I wonder how the Dempsey name gets into these CARROLL lines.

I have done atDNA at both FTDNA (Family Finder) and 23&Me (Relative Finder). I have two matches with folks who have CARROLL ancestors. One descends from Dempsey CARROLL b NC died AL. The other descends from a John CARROLL b c1790 NC who moved to TN and then to MO. All three of us share the same segment of atDNA, meaning we probably all 3 share the same Common Ancestor. I was hoping it might be the CARROLL line.

Please let me know if you can tie either of these two CARROLLs into your family, and/or if you know where the NC CARROLLs came from.

Thanks,

Jim Bartlett jim4bartletts@verizon.net

The 1850 census has the ages of each person. Can’t you tell from that whether Jane is the proper age to be mother to all the children, including Robert Davis?

Some things to think about... There was no race category for Native Americans, but I have heard that if the census taker saw their darker color, he would record them as mulatto. There were Native American mothers in many homes with English sounding surnames.

Also, I’ve been told that when the slave master fathered light colored children by a slave, he occasionally reared them as his own. Maybe a document wasn’t needed since their father was a free man.

I am stumped on my ancestor Robert Davis Carroll (who was white) who in 1850 was living in York with Jane Carroll . There were several children, 2 of whom are listed as mulattoes. Robert was killed during the Civil War. Was Jane his mother? Was she married or an unwed mother? Who were the mulatto children? One was named Martha G. , she married mulatto William Bryant. The other was Amanda Jane or Jane Amanda who married mulatto Henry Moss. They were all in Spartanburg co in 1860 then buncombe co n.c. By 1870. Then I lose them all. In 1870 Jane is living with one of the mulatto families. Wouldn't free mulattoes have to be legally registered to avoid being enslaved? For them to be free in 1850 their mother (Jane?) was probably white. Where would I look for registration records?

I can't help with anything specific. Other places to try are:

Ancestry.com has an "Orphanages in New York" message board at:
http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.orphans.us.ny/mb.ashx

There's a list of orphanages at:
http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/orphans/orphan-asylums.sht...
The only "St. Thomas" on the list is in upstate NY, not the NYC metro area.

A trick for finding orphanages in censuses at Ancestry.com is to use "inmate" as a keyword for the search. People in jails and hospitals were listed as inmates, but so were children in orphanages.

Hope this helps.

You don't mention any dates.

My GGF James Carroll may have been in an orphanage in New York City between 1880 and 1900. I have not located any records for him. There are pages for an orphanage in the 1880 census. I can point you to them if that's the period you're interested in, but it sounds like you're talking about later than that.

I will email this to you as you asked, but I am also posting here in case others might be interested.

The William Hardy Carroll I know lived in NC 1853-1928. He did not have a son named Howard, so this was a different William Hardy.

There were several with the name Hardy Carrell/oll who lived in Eastern NC in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. My Major Hardy C. had moved from Sampson County to Stokes County, NC by 1815. He named a son Hardy Royal C., and the name Hardy continued in several grandsons and great-grandsons.

I hope you find your William Hardy Carroll. Maybe you can learn if he had ancestors in Sampson or Duplin County, NC. This male lineage has been well documented in DNA in the CARROLL DNA Project with FamilyTreeDNA. Although no exact family tree has been found so far, the DNA seems to indicate our line is similar to others who are Scots-Irish, probably from Northeastern Ireland.

If you have a man with the Carroll surname in a line where there have been no adoptions, name changes, or illegitimate births, then DNA testing may be a quick way for you to find others who share the same heritage.

Lura

Looking for information on:

Thomas Carrol (c1775-)
(1) On Jan. 10, 1807, Thos. Carroll made a land petition as a yeoman of Toronto Twp. He had been in the province for 3 years and had purchased land near the Clergy Reserve on Lot 8, Con. 2 NDS, Toronto Twp. and wished to lease that property. The lease was recommended (U200). He was absent Sept. 25 to Oct. 24, 1813 (D255). On May 1, 1815, Thos. Carroll made a land petition as a yeoman of Toronto Twp. He had been born in Ireland, was 40 years old, and resided in the province for 9 years (U201).
2) On May 17, 1819, Thos. Carroll made a land petition as a yeoman of York. He was born in New Brunswick, was over 22 years old, had resided in the province for 10 years, and had served 2 years in the Royal Artillery Drivers during the late war. In April, 1815, he was discharged from the corps at Queenston. The petition was granted (U202).

There appear to have been two Thos. Carrolls living in the same area in Ontario, Canada at the same time. I am looking for the one who served in the 2nd Regiment of York Militia, recruited from Toronto Twp., during the War of 1812.

Noah Carroll (possibly spelled Carrel or Carrell or Carell) of Kansas is my grandfather (my father's dad), but I unfortunately don't know anything about him other than he died around 1936 and lived in Kansas. He was married to Rose Hannah Wilkerson, born ~1892 and died ~1942-1948. Actually, it's possible they weren't married but had my dad out of wedlock, I'm not sure. Their son was my father Noah James (Jim) Carroll, born 1934 in Uniontown, Kansas, died 1991. Does anyone have any information about Noah my grandfather, such as his birth year and place, death year and place, his ancestors and their origin, etc., or where I might look for more info? I think he had been married before and already had grown kids when he had my dad with Rose Wilkerson. I would greatly appreciate any info.

My grandfather, William Joseph, had an older brother Richard. They also had a sister Catherine. Their parents were Valentine and Bridget (O'Reilly) Carroll from P.E.I..
Valentine was a mariner and supposedly died in some sort of accident at sea. Bridget also died supposedly of a broken heart and the children were separated.
William and Richard were sent to an orphanage and Catherine was sent to work in a boarding house in Gloucester, MA at age 9 to work. William escaped from the orphanage at age 10 and traveled to Boston to be near his mothers family. He lived in a barn and became a milk man. He located his sister and later on located his brother Richard in Cos Cob, CT. We have met Catherine's family who still reside in Gloucester. We have been unable to locate Richard's family. Richard was a writer in NYC.

Best of luck to you in your research,
Mary Carroll Cantin

Hi Jillian - I am the great granddaughter of Bridget and Valentine Carroll, Catherine's parents. Catherine was born in Placentia, Newfoundland. She had 2 brothers, William and Richard. William was my grandfather. Valentine died very young. Stories conflict as to the cause - either apendicitis or being crushed between fishing boats. Bridget died shortly thereafter, presumably from a broken heart. A few years ago, my sister and I visited Newfoundland and met with some of our relatives there. They had some interesting stories about them. After Bridget's death, Catherine went to Gloucester to live with friends of Bridget and Val who owned a boarding house and she was to "help out". I believe she was 9 at the time. William and Richard ended up at an orphanage in St. John, Newfoundland. Richard remained there and William ran away, eventually coming to Massachusetts. He lived in the barn at a dairy farm in Cambridge and is said to have driven the first motorized milk truck in Massachusetts ! Unfortunately, I never had the chance to meet him. Richard became a writer and is alleged to have worked for either a newspaper or magazine in NYC, however we could never really confirm that. Catherine's granddaughter, Mary Williams, still lives in the Gloucester area - you should look her up for more information.
Have fun researching - I would be interested in any other information you might find.

Best regards,
Colleen Carroll

Hello...my name is Michael Carroll and have a Great Grandfather, Frank Carroll, who lived and worked in Gloucester from 1870 to about ~1906. He was a ship captain of a number of working schooners and brigs. He worked in the Gulf of Maine and Bay of Fundy and Georges Bank. He then moved to Boston. While living in Gloucester, he had a number of girls and my Grandfather, Henry Carroll. All we know about Frank Carroll was that he came from Liverpool, England. Is there a Frank or Henry Carroll in your family?

Hi Jillian,
I have been looking for information on Catherine Carroll, who lived in gloucester. She was my great grandmother's mother. I know she married John Gillis, they had 6 children Robert, Virginia, Janice, Jean, Margret & my great grandmother Barbara. I believe she was born in Canada. I cant find anything beyond that. Please send more info.
Thank you, Ashley

David Anderson Carroll

On my husband's grandfather's (Earl Clyde Carroll) marriage's license he listed his father as David Anderson Carroll born in TN. I have reason to believe he had ties in KY as well. I have reason to believe this person may have died young. My husband grandfather was born 1902-1908 so this David Carroll was born circa 1870-1880's. We have taken part in the family Tree DNA. Has any other branches from TN and Ky Carroll lines taken part?

Thank you for replying and I apologize for being so long in replying.
I do not believe my branch ever was in Ky.
I believe they came from SC through Alabama, taking the Southern route.
I wany any info on her I can get since she is our maternal grandmother but the Swartz husband is my line and we have not even his first name. If you have gotten a clue since we were in touch I would be so grateful if you'd share. thanks. Songbird218@windstream.net

Kim
I'm Henrietta's sister. We haven't found Archibald's parents. I believe we possibly know at least some of his siblings from an obituary.
Let's keep in touch and let each other know if we find anything.

Ruth Carroll Epling
