Carruthers family of Stanwix

I live in South Wales and I have been tracing my family history on my Dads side of the family as I have always been fascnated by the stories and lives of the Carruthers side of my family.

I know that My Great Grandfather James Crosswith Carruthers was Born in Bury Lancashire in approximately 1884

His Father (my Great Great Grandfather) was called William Carruthers who was born in Scotsby in Cumbria in 1847 He is listed on all the census returns as a Currier. My Great Great Grandfather William was a bit of a mystery in our family, we know he travelled around the large houses of yorkshire as a currier and saddlery artist. He dissapeared after having 6 kids with a cook called Mary who was his wife. I have finally managed to trace him as living on his own in 1901 so it looks like he just ran away.

I have now hit a wall with William Carruthers's Father. I know that he was Called Samuel Carruthers and he was born in approximately 1816 in Stanwix in cumbria
He is listed as a Currier throught his life. His Wife Margaret Carruthers (not sure of maiden name) was also born in 1816

What I would like to find out is if you are able to help me out with samuel in any way? Is he related to any of the Carruthers members from stanwix In your family.
Does Samuel carruthers belong to any of your trees?
I would love to know his parents names

Thanks
Lisa

Mary CARRUTHERS (Possibly from Ireland)

Tryin to trachdown info on Mary CARRUTHERS. Not really sure about her. The only info I have is from her son's obituary and a couple of American Census's that show she was probably born in Ireland and immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1800's. She is on the 1820 census with her husband, Joseph HART, and one son. From what I have seen, she married Joseph betwenn 1818 and 1822. She and family lived in Whitewater Twsp., Indiana and moved to Lick Creek Twp., Davis Co., Iowa. I suspect she died rhere, but have no documentation. Records say that she ane Isaac had seven children, although I have found documentation on three son's ( John Joseph and George). She and Isaac were one set of gggrand-parwents. Any info on her on her family would be greatly appreciated.

]Thanks

Bob

Carruthers family an integral part of Scottish history

A book I purchased recently on the Carruthers Genealogy.
A must read for Boarder families as well!
This book details the rise to prominence of this ancient Scottish family, from their support for William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in the defence of their homeland, to their eventual financial downfall in the 18th Century.

The Rev Arthur Stanley Carruthers, himself a descendant of the “Reiver Barons, Lairds of Holmains and Mouswald”, writes a diligently researched and fascinating account of the many strands of this family who lived in the border lands, in what is now Dumfries and Galloway.

The book includes several family trees showing how the Carruthers family intermarried with some of the most eminent dynasties in Scottish History. It remains the definitive account of the Carruthers, and should not be missed by anyone who is interested in Scottish history in general or this family in particular.

I am happy to share this information as to where you can purchase this eBook.

Regards
Peter
His line goes:
Jacob > Nathaniel > James > William (b.1740) > James Jaques (b.1763) > Samuel (b. 1791).
Jacob and Nathaniel were founding fathers of sorts in North Carolina.
I am seeking information on a Carruthers. possibly a Lela. I have several relatives buried in the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery in Trowbidge, Illinois near Neoga, Illinois. I was putting flowers on all of my relations graves and came across a Carruthers buired in the area by my Uncle Wayne and my Grt Grt. Aunt Amy.{only 1 a female buried off to the side by itself} I faintly remember my Grandmother Johnson telling me..she(the Carruthers) was relation. My grt.grt. grandmother Augusta Johnson was a Swanson. Does anyone know ..is this Carruthers my relation and how?

Walter Carruthers and Mary Irvine or Irving were my ancestors. I've not found any record of their marriage, but they had several children. I'm told that in St Mungo parish records there are John 1848, Janet Bell 1851 and David 1853. I've found on the IGI the Janet Bell record and more, from Tundergarth - William 1855, Elizabeth 1856, Robert 1859, Margaret Laidlaw 1861, Margaret 1863 and Mary Jane 1865.

Janet Bell was my ancestor and on her marriage record she gives her address as Tundergarth, so I think it is fairly likely that the two families are the same.

Does anyone recognise any of this?

I'll be very grateful to hear if so.

Hello,
I am attempting to prove or disprove a link between my g.g.grandfather Walter Carruther(b1832), and Walter Carruthers(b1832) in Hutton & Corrie the son of David Carruthers and Elizabeth Corrie. In the 1881 census my ancestor states his place of birth as Bewcastle,Cumberland, yet in the 1891 census he states his place of birth as Scotland. Bewcastle is about 7 miles south of the border and about 25 miles from the Hutton & Corrie area, so they are both in the same general area. I have been unable to date to find any record of a birth or christening for a Walter in Bewcastle in the 1830,s. I would be grateful for any information members may have regarding the Walter who was born in Hutton & Corrie.

Regards

John Brown
THE FREEPORT PRESS

Pub. Thurs. Oct 13, 1881
Harrison Co., OH

Mr. Thomas Carruthers exhibited at our office a few days ago a family relic, which is somewhat a curiosity. It is a marriage license, issued to James Carruthers, his great-great-grandfather on the 24th of July, 1783.

James Carruthers of the Providence of Pennsylvania desired to marry Rachel Clark, a widow of the same place, so this marriage license was issued by William Cosby Esq., Captain General and Governor in Chief of the provinces of New Jersey, New York and the Territory depending thereon.

It was signed, sealed and delivered at Fort George, in the sixth year of the reign of King George, and was addressed to any Protestant minister or Justice of the Peace.

It appears from a certificate attached that James and Rachel went before a Justice of the Peace named Samuel Bustell, and were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony. One of the witnesses to the ceremony was Thomas Green.

The certificate is writtten on parchment and is in a fair stte of perservation.

***************************

Courtesy post - not related

My grandmother, Mariah McCoy, along with Isabelle & Sallie McCoy are listed as the daughters of William Carethers. I don't know if and/or how the Carethers & McCoys are related. There is also a Ricie ( Ricy) McCoy who married George Few. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Isn't that a laugh!
Now all you folks go back to your computers and revise. I think her name was Ann, but don't hold me to it.
