Re: Ebenezer Carson

Debi, I have a good bit of data that Mom acquired by communicating mostly with her 3rd cousin Floy McCreight. Floy's grandmother was Isabella Jane "Jennie" Carson, the daughter of William Gilmore Carson. He and Ebenezer Carson, our g-g-grandfather, were brothers and their father was Wilson Carson. Some of Floy's papers indicate that these two brothers had several other brothers that never married. I did some more looking this week and have found many connections -- too much data to show here.
For the benefit of other comments in this chain - (Jean) I found Maggie with Wm & Phileana Mccormick in El Dorado, California in the 1870 Census; I have not discovered how they are related. Thank you for that information. (taarcangel) I saw that you had corrected the nearly-illegible Ancestry record to show Almyra instead of Clarissa-Good. (Linda) Please let me know where the "Kerr" comes from in Elizabeth Finley's name; and, yes, she is the wife of William Gilmore. I did not find a connection to Catharine, either, but that IS our Ebenezer in Kosciusko County as you thought. (Marguerite) The names that you found in the 1880 Census in Woodford, Illinois are the five single brother's and sisters that I mentioned above. And the three nephews and one niece in the household are the children of my g-g-grandfather Ebenezer. I have no record of Ebenezer's death (does anyone?).
Debi, I don't recall seeing any references to Ralph or Leslie. I wrote you through Ancestry but guess you didn't get it. I am just about to stop the genealogy project(s) for the summer but I do have several documents that I'd love to share with you. Please write me ASAP using my "firstname" at "mylastname" decimal com. Bobbie Wooll

Nick Carson 1950-2012 Youngstown, Ohio

POLAND – Nick Carson, devoted husband and father, local businessman, and sportsman, died on April 15, 2012, from the complications of diabetes and kidney disease.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, Ohio.

Nick was born at Youngstown’s South Side Hospital on Dec. 23, 1950, the son of David Byers Carson Jr., and Mary Louise “Lulu” Milarr Carson.

On Nov. 30, 1985, he married his beloved wife, Ingrid Lundquist. They subsequently shared their lives with their daughters, Lindgren of Cleveland, Ohio and Britta, a freshman at Wittenberg University, and with his son, Dylan, now married to Phoebe Zimmermann, and their son, Ozbourne, all of Denver.

Following his graduation from the Kiski School in Saltsburg, Pa., at which he was captain of the swim team and a member of the Kiski Glee Cub, Nick continued his education at Bowdoin College in Maine.

After his college experience, a spiritual quest led Nick to join “The Brotherhood of the Spirit,” a commune in western Massachusetts (later known as the Renaissance Community), where he became chief baker of the group’s On The Rise Bakery and also began a paving company there.

In 1976, he left the commune and moved to the Hawaiian island of Maui, working in construction, painting houses, being a beach bum and surfer, and serving as a tour guide, which he said had been one of the best jobs in his life.

Two years later, he returned to Youngstown to work for City Asphalt and Paving Co., a company founded by his grandfather, Calvin Milarr. Nick started as a shoveler and worked his way up to managing the company. After his father’s retirement, Nick became responsible for City Asphalt and was later elected president of the Ohio Contractors Association.

An avid sportsman, Nick participated in fly-fishing, sailing, racing cars and trucks, skeet shooting, swimming, and golf. In 1993, he shot a hole-in-one at the Youngstown Country Club. He was an active member of U.S. Masters Swimming, and in regional and national competitions earned All-American Honors in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.
After a kidney transplant in 2003, Nick became active in the Transplant Olympics, representing Ohio in national competitions, and the United States at the International Transplant Games in Canada and Australia, where he won numerous medals.

He was a member of the Youngstown Skeet Association, the Mahoning Valley Trap League, the Pine Lake Trout Club, and the Ashtabula Yacht Club, where his sailboat, Pogen, was docked.

Nick also enjoyed woodworking in his home shop, using exotic woods to create beautiful pens and bottle stoppers, which won an award at the Canfield Fair.

In Youngstown, Nick’s religious and philanthropic impulses were realized when he served as a co-moderator of the Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church, and playing an active role in the “Feeding of the 500,” a church-sponsored event that annually provides a Thanksgiving Dinner for more than 500 people.

In addition, after a 20-year reunion of commune members, Nick recognized a need to assist fellow alumni and established the nonprofit Community Resource Foundation to raise money for their basic essentials. In its early years, he participated in the Tod Children’s Hospital Telethon and helped start and run Tod’s Making Miracles Golf Outing

Nick is also survived by his father-in-law, Charles Lundquist; sister-in-law Lisa Grimm (Rick); nieces Leah and Katherine Grimm and Elizabeth Romero; and his cousins, Kathy (Michael) Hunter, Ginny (Mandrika), Eliza, and Henry (Janice) Garlick, Mina, Laura and Sally Carson, David (Jan), and Tom and William Bartlett.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Matthew; and sister Patricia Anne.

Calling hours will take place on Friday, April 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland, Ohio Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown OH 44503 or LifeBanc, P.O. Box 74174, Cleveland, OH 44194-4174.

Mahoning

Thanks Matthew for the information.

I'm always glad to here from a relative tracing the same lines.I've found the same thing where the dates don't correlate to well when you get back as far as the 1700's. I have the same problem on my Cary lineage.

I think I grew up not too far from the Carson homestead in the Sheboygan/Fond du Lac, WI area. I'm hoping this spring I can go around with my dad and see if we can locate it's exact location. I found a property map that I'm using. I grew up in the Sheboygan area. Would be nice to learn about the Maine part of things and discover if they were in fact from Ireland.

If you find more information please let me know and I will do the same.

Paula Cary

I'm not sure what happened to the name Carson or who it originally belonged to, but Laura took on the Ellison name in the future. Priscilla is listed as "Widowed" on a future census. On Laura's death certificate Priscilla is listed as her mother. She may have had these children Frank & Laura 'out of wedlock'.

Carson--Oklahoma--Ohio

I am looking for information on my ancestors from Ohio who moved to Kansas and then on to Oklahoma. My Great-grandma was born in Luther, OK before it was a state (1904). It was listed as OK territory on her birth certificate. I have pictures of her parents' head stones and some of her siblings' head stones that are located in the Bristow Cemetery in Bristow, OK. I also have copies of their obits from the local paper. I am looking however for information mainly on her grandfather's side of the family. I have loads of information on her grandmother's side that can be traced all the way back to Robert the Bruce of Scotland circa 1200's through other family members. I am still looking for JOSEPH PINE CARSON's parents and any siblings he may have had. Right now it looks as if he simply came to being in 1836 in Leesburg, Ohio.

If you have ANY information that you think may help in my search for the ancestry of JOSEPH PINE CARSON, please let me know.

Stephanie A.
Hi Josette,
I just posted my notes on County Down graves involving Carson and Maxwell names. I forgot to mention to look further down at all of the Ballyphilip parish graveyards beyond those first ones. There are more Carson graves of possible interest.

I think all of the Carson and Maxwell families comping to PA c1720s were Presbyterians at that time. I noticed that some later dated Carson and Maxwell graves in County Down were Church of Ireland rather than Presbyterian (probably more intermarrying by then).

The text said most Catholic graves in County Down (and other Ulster countiies) would have been in what are Church of Ireland graveyards prior to 1720, after which Catholic graveyards were usually separate from those and Presbyterian graveyards. I noticed the Hanna/Hannah surnames in County Dwon included both Presbyterian (Scots-Irish origin) and Catholic (usually original Irish) lineages...probably not related closely.

Gary

Hi Josette,

Below are some Ireland County Down Gravestone Inscriptions “The Heart of Downe” Volumes 1 through 20
notes involving Maxwell and Carson graves. The Carson graves in Ballyphilip are of interest to me because of the names Robert and Samuel and dates.

This may be TMI - thought I'd include all of the notes I made so far.

Gary

County Down – Slanes Graveyard (civil parish of Slanes & of Church of Ireland parish of Ballyphilip)
Here lyth Alexander McComb who d 1724 age 80 and his wife Mary Maxwell who d 1693 age 43, his wife Jean Litel (Jean Little?
Hi,
I am looking for any information on the Carson family, particularly the church where I could find the burial of John & Sarah Carson late 1800 to early 1900, it's possible that John was widowed & lived with Thomas his son in the later years, any information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Re: Carson family from Maine/Ireland

Hi, Paula.

I'm researching the same links you are. My great-great grandfather James Henry Carson would have been your great-great grandmother's brother I believe. I have solid links back through their grandfather James Carson but lose the connection between James and Adam. (I've found it in other trees but based on the dates I find the connections tenuous at best.) There are some good resources out there regarding some of the Carsons in Sheboygan and their links to Maine (http://sheboyganhistory.com/b/carson1.htm) and I have additional resource links to plat maps and town maps listing the Carsons and their properties in Sheboygan and the Kennebec, Maine area if you would like me to send them.

If I can find anymore information going back from James Carson (our great-great-great-great grandfather :) I'll post it here.

Regards,

Matthew Carson

Carson lineages in County Down Ireland and PA NC SC VA OH TN KY

Hi Patty,

My Carson line arrived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania or nearby 1740s from N Ireland, most likely County Down. The most likely parish for my Carson origin (1720s or prior) I've found is Ballyphilip (town of Portaferry) and maybe Ballyatwood, Ballyculter and Ballyvester(sic). A William Carson was curate in Ballyculter 1730, son of Robert Carson gentleman of County Down. William Carson was educated by Mr. Robert Hannah (the Carson and Hannah families intermarried in VA 1750s).

Slanes Graveyard in Ballyphilip parish (Church of Ireland) contains the graves of Rachel Carson b 1679 d 1766 and husband John McComb and his parents Alexander McComb 1644-1724 and mother Mary Maxwell 1650-1693. Donaghadee Graveyard - Ballyvester (County Down) contains graves of William Carson 1783-1835, wife Elizabeth, James Carson 1792-1877 (wife Elizabeth) and their son Robert Carson. The Catherwood surname connects somehow, and there were some Hannah surnames in that area too. Around 1700 in that area, some Hanna/Hannah lineages were Presbyterian (Scots) and some were Irish Catholic. All of the Carson lineages I've found were Presbyterian (Scots).

Some connecting surnames in PA were also in First Presbyterian Killyleagh parish records (County Down)1700-1730. Those surnames included Strain/Strean, Hannah, Woods, Stevenson/Stephenson, and Ritchey. There was also a cluster of Carson and related names in Belfast Second Presbyterian records 1680s-1730s that show up in PA together (intermarrying).

Do you know of any male Carson descendants in County Down (or with a paper trail originating there)? I'd like to find a living male Carson descending from one of these County Down lineages to do a YDNA test to see if the results match with my Carson line.

Thanks,
Gary
