Re: Descendants of?

My Maiden name is Cartelami (originaly Cartalemi). It was also believed in my family that the name was changed during immigration, but found that to be untrue as my grandfather and his brother were both born in NJ and they each spelled the name differently. Cartalemi, however, is the correct spelling as that is the spelling my great grand parents used. Relatives of both versions are in contact and confirmed our grandfathers are brothers. If you would like we could go down the family tree and see how we are related. So far everyone w/ either spelling has been linked back to my great grand parents and we're finding more every year.

What could Carta be abbreviated from?

My great grandmother was completely Sicilian and had the last name Carta, and my dad remembers it as having been abbreviated from something, but not even my grandfather (her son) remembers what it was. Her name was Rose, and she was born in 1919 and passed away on her 87th birthday in 2006. I don't remember the date at the moment, but it was her birthday. She married Edgar Bruce Barrett who died decades before her, and had a few children, two of whom I know of, Bruce Edward Barrett (My Grandfather) and Eva Barrett. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
My name is Gary Carta. Born in Cuba of Spaniard father & mother, from the Canary Island. Live in Valencia, Ca. Have found Carta/Cartas all over the world but still not a common surname and all of us seem to have the same origin: Italy ( Sardinia & South Sicily ) or Corcega (North of Sardinia ) LOt of Carta in Sardinia, where the surname is almost common in certain counties, quite a few in Sicily, few in Corcega. Over Western Europe not a lot, but still some ( Spain, UK. England, Portugal & Germany. Quite a bit
in the US, East,West & South. My e-mail Is bkpk@sbcglobal.net. Welcome to big Carta family, I really believe that all of us are somehow connected. Take care.

Hi Walter,

Since your posting is so old I realize you might not be able to help me but I thought I would chance it anyhow. I am looking for information on a Salvatore Carta who married a Sebastiana Ripa in Melilli. What I am looking for is birth dates, dates of death, or any information on their parents. Time frame on these two individuals would probably be sometime in the middle 1800's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This message is adressed to Walter Carta, but if has someone who can help me, I'll thankful.

Walter, I read that you live in a Sardinian Village where there are a lot of Carta people. I'm descendent of Carmela Carta, who was born in somewhere in Sadinian between 1867-1869, and imigrated to Brasil in 1896. She is Giuachino's daughter, and I think she lived near from Cagliari or Quartu Sant'Elena, becaus my GGfather, who was sardinian too, was from Quartu Sant'Elena. I found her born in these cities but they don't have it. If someone can help me I'll grateful.
Her mother's name was Narcisa IBBA (or something like that)
Hi,

I was born in Cuba, of Spaniard father & Mother, My grandfather was Guglielmo Carta, from Corcega. He
told me that he came from Sardinia (Italy) to Corcega
and then went to Tenerife, in Spain. Have found a lot
of Carta in Sardinia, some in Catania, some in Corcega
and a little less in Spain (more in tha Canary Islands, very
few in Spain's mainland) Was surprised to find quite a bit
in TX, NM and a few all over the South. Seems most of
them directly from Italy, but still way back. Some came
from Spain in pre-revolutionary days and were really well
established. There's mention of a Cartas involved heavely
in merchant trade in Vermont. Bottom line, is an not so
common surname in the Western hemisphere, haven't had
access to Central/South American databases, but suspect
there must be a few in Argentina, that was heavily populated
by italians. Glad to be of help. Iam in California, north of Los
Angeles.

Rafael

My family is also from Melilli. My great-grandparents were Ignazio & Rosa Carta. The name Carta is somewhat common in Melilli. Our relatives settled in Middletown, CT as did many from Melilli.
Do you know when they married? I might be able to find their marriage certificate if you give me a date range. I have many films from Melilli through the Family History Library. Please write back to me at cartaj@edaw.com
My grandfather was born jan.10,1888 and died in 1963. I think his father's name was tommaso Carta. My grandfathers name was Nunzio Carto,Sr. He married Mary Tricome. They were from somewhere in Italy-- Provencia de Messina. They had children named Nunzio, Concetta,Antoinette,Victoria,Frank,Joseph,Lillyan, The name was changed to Carto when they came to New York and settled in Philadelphia Pa. I
need any and all responses as my dad is very interested in finding our family,as am I in Italy. My dad is having heart surgery tomorrow and I would really like to surprise him with my findings. Thank you so much. Nancy

Josephine Carta

The surname Carta is fairly common all over Italy, especially on the island of Sardenia. My ancestors come from Melilli, Siciliy and that name is somewhat common there as well. Josephine (Giuseppa in Italian) is also a common name as I'm finding. If your grandmother died in the states, you might find her town of birth on that certificate, or from older family members. There's not much you can do unless you know the town she is from.
