1782 Halifax Co., VA. Tax Lists

From the 1782 Personal Property Tax Lists for Halifax Co., VA., the following Carters were recorded:

Household #284
Richard Carter
1 Tithe/15 Negroes/6 Horses/0 Mules/36 Cattle

Household #321
Thomas Carter
2 Tithes/0 Negroes/1 Horse/0 Mules/5 Cattle

Household #322
Theod. Carter
2 Tithes/3 Negroes/6 Horses/0 Mules/18 Cattle

Household #736
Richard Carter
1 Tithe/1 Negro/3 Horses/0 Mules/15 Cattle

Household #1128
Mary Carter
0 Tithes/8 Negroes/6 Horses/0 Mules/29 Cattle

Household #1314
Richard Carter
1 Tithe/3 Negroes/6 Horses/0 Mules/32 Cattle

Total of 1344 Heads of Household in the county in 1782.
***********************************************************
Is it possible that the Thomas Carter located at Household #321 is the same as Thomas Carter found in the 1790 Census for Rockingham Co., NC? As you may recall, Thomas Carter of Rockingham Co., NC stated in his Revolutionary War pension papers that he was living in Halifax Co., VA. at the time of the war and had enlisted there. This is the same man that stated he was born in Maryland in 1746. In a recent e-mail, Richard Zieman says there doesn't appear to be evidence of a Carter settlement in Maryland so was the Revolutionary War pensioner mistaken? It was late in age when he made application for a pension. Also, the Thomas Carter in this 1782 Halifax Co., VA. tax list lives immediately next door to Theod. Carter (Household #322) (who I believe to be Theodorick Carter, Sr.). Could the Thomas in the Halifax Co. tax lists be living next door to Theodorick Carter because he was actually his son? This has been a common occurrence for all the years I've been doing genealogical research. Bottom line questions are could the Thomas Carter of the 1790 Rockingham Co., NC Census be the same as Thomas Carter of the 1782 Halifax Co., VA. tax lists and could this man also be a son of Theodorick Carter, Sr. rather than a transplanted person from Maryland?

Seeking information for Herman Carter born in Tennesse lived in West Chester New York

I'm attempting to do a geneology search on my alleged father. I was told by my birthmother that he died in the 80's. The Herman Carter that I am seeking would have lived in Westchester New York in the 60's. He was a business owner of some type of night club my mother worked for him. In the 80's, my father would have been in his 60's. The Herman Carter that I am seeking was African American. If you have any information regarding this individual, please reply to this message board.

Lester CARTER - Kansas City, KS - February 1904

"The Kansas City Times" (Missouri) Monday, February 8, 1904

LEAPS OUT A HOSPITAL WINDOW.

Lester CARTER, a negro patient at the Douglas hospital in
Kansas City, Kas., escaped from that institution last night
about 9 o'clock and roamed around that city clad only in a
night robe. CARTER was a pneumonia patient, and from the
malady had become delirious.

A nurse went into his room and tried to make CARTER return
to bed. He went to his bed, which was near a window, and
standing on it, leaped through. He did not sustain any cuts
from the glass in the window and was not injured otherwise, as
the ward in which he was is on the ground floor.

CARTER finally went to a boarding house on Fourth street
between Minnesota avenue and State avenue, from which place
he was returned in the police ambulance to the hospital.

======================================================
(I have no connection with this family but I'd appreciate
knowing if you found this posting helpful.)
johnobrien@kc.rr.com
======================================================

neirbo8
Elsie Ruth Carter (1885-1946); James Richard Meadows (1875-1967)

Would like to find a male descendant of this couple who would be interested in joining an ongoing DNA project. James Richard Meadows was a son of Peter Marion Meadows who in turn was a son of James W. Meadows, who was a son of Francis Meadows (c.1800-1872) who was a son of Francis Meadows (c.1754-1836). There is an ongoing DNA project which is attempting to link all of the sons of this Francis Meadows by means of a Y-DNA test. This requires the testing of a descendant through the male line. We know of at least six sons of James Richard Meadows and Elsie Ruth Carter - Otis Meadows, Charles Meadows, James Meadows, Reginald Meadows, Ray Meadows, and Clarence Meadows. Testing would have to be done on a son or grandson or great-grandson (etc.) of any of these six, with descent strictly through the male line.

Francis Meadows, according to his Revolutionary War records, had twelve sons but they were not named in the records. So far six sons have been proven by paper documentation: Francis, Fielding, Anthony, Thomas, Nathan, and St. Clair. Another, Abraham, has been connected through the comparison of Y-DNA tests done on two of his male descendants and a test conducted on a male descendant (me) of Nathan's. The aim of the project is to test male descendants of all of the six proven sons and male descendants of the other suspected, but not proven, sons in hopes of tying them together genetically.
Carters Family in Syracuse, New York; Indiana; Kansas; Colorado City, Colorado; and San Francisco, California

Carters Family in Syracuse, New York; Indiana; Kansas; Colorado City, Colorado; and San Francisco, California

I am looking for any additional information on this Carter clan. My research takes me to a William H. Carter, born about 1856 in New York (possibly Syracuse). He was married to a Mary A., born 1861 in Arkansas (possibly in Missouri). They had the following children:

1. James E., b. 1880, New York
2. May L, b. 1881, Indiana
3. Minnie A., b. 1884, Indiana
4. Ruth Melissa, 16 Dec 1886, Vincennes, Indiana, d. 04 Dec 1958, San Francisco, CA (our Grandmother)m. Frank Alfred Thude, b. 13 Aug 1882, Magdebury, Germany, d. 15 Apr 1950 San Francisco, CA
5. Charles A., 1895, Kansas
6. Floyd W., 1903, California

I have the following research on these Carters:

The Carter Family 1880 - 1920

The 1870 Census for the Syracuse Ward 5, Onondaga, New York it shows George (37), Mary (39), William (14), Frank (9), Charles (8), and Lillie (4). It shows George’s birthplace as New York and Mary’s as Canada. It also shows all the children’s birthplace as New York. This matches the William’s information for his age, birthplace, Father’s birthplace and Mother’s birthplace given in 1880 Census.

The 1880 Census for Syracuse, Onondaga, New York it shows a William (24, birthplace New York), Mary (19, birthplace Missouri) and James Carter (2M, birthplace New York). It also shows William’s Father’s birthplace, New York and his Mother in Canada. It show Mary’s Father’s birthplace, Missouri and her Mother also in Missouri. It can be assumed that these Carter are our Carters because it matches 1900 and 1910 which we have family stories and documentation of those Carters.

The 1900 Census shows William H. (44), Mary A. (38), May L. (19), Minnie A. (16), Ruth M. (13), and Charles A. (5) Carter living in Colorado (Colorado City Town, El Paso, Colorado). It also shows William’s Father’s birthplace, New York and his Mother in Canada. It shows Mary’s Father and Mother’s birthplace as Missouri. However it shows Mary being born in Arkansas and not Missouri. It also shows May L., Minnie A., and Ruth M. being born in Indiana and Charles A. in Kansas. James would have been about 20 years old and does not appear living with the family.

The 1910 Census shows Mary A. (46), James E. (30), Charles (15), and Floyd W. (7) Carter living in San Francisco, Assembly District 37, San Francisco, California. It also shows Mary Father and Mother’s birthplace, Missouri. It shows Mary’s birthplace Arkansas, James E., New York, Charles A., Kansas and Floyd W. California. In the same household it shows Minnie A. (26, birthplace as Indiana) and George W. (24) Matthai. It shows Minnie and George being married for two years with it being Minnie’s second marriage and George’s first. It also shows Mary and James being widowers and Mary having 5 out of 6 children living. There are four children listed in this in this Census. Ruth our grandmother was alive so we can assume that May is the one child that died.

In 1918, the World War I draft registration shows a Charles G. Carter, born 02 Jul 1894 in Kansas City, Kansas. His Father’s birthplace is Syracuse, New York and his nearest relative is Mary Adeline Zro (Mother). Family members’ verbal stories tell us that Mary A. remarried. Photo on-hand shows an older Mary A. with another man. Could our Mary A. be remarried with the last name of Zro? See below with the research done with the 1920 Census and this Zro name. This Charles is born the same month, year and state as our Charles and show a Father born in the same state and a Mother named Mary A(deline). However, the 1900 and 1910 Censuses show our Charles with the middle initial of “A” and not “G”.

A search of the 1920 Census shows a James (39) and Floyd (17) Carter as lodgers living in San Francisco Assembly District 30, San Francisco, California. It shows James’ birthplace as New York with his Father’s birthplace as England and Mother’s as Arkansas. It shows Floyd’s birthplace as California with his Father’s birthplace as New York and Mother’s as Arkansas. It also shows James married with it would appear to be his wife, Adeline Carter (27) born in Connecticut listed below him. This census shows everyone being a lodger so there relation is not really known.

It is also interesting in this 1920 Census in the same house that James and Floyd are lodging; there is an Earl and Adaline (born abt. 1863 in Arkansas) Zerrell. Both Earl and Adaline parent’s birthplace are shown as Germany. Could the Zro name in the draft registration above really be Zerrell? Could this Adaline Zerrell be using her middle name? This would add to the theory above that the Charles G. Carter who registered for World War I draft is our Charles with a Mother’s name Mary Adeline Zro. And, could the parent’s birthplace of this Adaline be a mistake and the census taker just used the parents’ birthplace of Earl into Adaline? Also it is interesting that this Earl and Adaline are listed right above our Floyd Carter who is 17 at this census taking. It could appear that our Floyd Carter has some relationship with this Adaline Zerrell. This Adaline was born in Arkansas in 1863 and our Mary A. was born in Arkansas in about 1861. And finally, family verbal stories and photo on-hand indicate that Mary A. second marriage husband’s name was Carl. Again, could this be an error by the census taker? Could this Earl name be really Carl?

Also, the 1920 Census shows Minnie A Matthai (36) being divorced, a boarder in Oakland, Alameda, California living in the household of Jake and Clara DeRuig. It shows her birthplace as Indiana with her Father’s birthplace as New York and Mother’s Arkansas.

Miss Edith Carter (married 1912 KS) Tom Fee

(newspaper clipping)

Carter – Fee Wedding

The wedding of Mr. Tom Fee and Miss Edith Carter occurred at six o'clock Wednesday night at the home of the bride's parents Mr. And Mrs. John Carter. We were unable to secure the details of the wedding for this issue of the Sun and will give a full account next week.

The Sylvia Sun
Sylvia, Reno County, Kansas
Thursday, December 5, 1912
page – front *** column – 4

----------------------------------------------

Carter – Fee Wedding

On Wednesday evening, December 4, at six o'clock, Thomas A. Fee and Edith F. Carter were married at the home of the bride, one mile southwest of Sylvia.

At the appointed hour the couple marched into the parlor where a corner had been beautifully decorated for them to stand. The officiating minister, Rev. H. W. Cummings, of this city, preceded them stepping to an appropriate wedding march played by Miss. Hazel Fee, of Stafford, sister of the groom. The bride was dressed in white and carried a bouquet of a dozen bridal roses.

There were about fifty guests present, almost all of them being relatives of the contracting parties. After the ceremony and many hearty congratulations by their friends, a two course dinner was served, and greatly enjoyed by all present. It was excellently prepared and tastily served.

Many valuable presents were given by the friends. The most valuable among them being $300.00 in cash from Mr. And Mrs. John Carter, parents of the bride.

Mr. and Mrs. Fee went immediately, after the departing of the guests, to the farm of Mr. Fee's father, four miles southwest of the city, where they will make their home and where the groom had already furnished a house for his bride.

The next day most of the company spent a pleasant day at a reception given for the bride and groom by Mr. And Mrs. J. A. Fee, of Stafford.

A pleasant and prosperous life is both wished and predicted for this young couple by their many friends in this community.

The Sylvia Sun
Sylvia, Reno County, Kansas
Thursday, December 12, 1912
page – front *** column – 3
I am trying to get in touch with Dr. Barry Hayes. I have seen earlier messages posted by him about the Carter family. In one of his messages, he states that he is in the process of writing a book about the Carter family.

Does anyone know if he did write this book and if he did, where might I get a copy? I haven't been able to find a recent message from Dr. Hayes with an address where I could get in touch with him.

Thanks for any help....................Hazel

I have been researching my family for the past 7-8 months and have gotten as far as somewhere in the 1640's. This is the status of my search....:

1) 100% Sure that Henry Carter born 1788 in Owen County, KY and died 2-22-1859 is the most provable person in my paternal line.

I need help proving the rest of my Family Tree and perhaps if im right, help me find out past the earliest of my paternal lineage...

Here is my information:

William Carter - Born 1641 Died 1708 (Location ??)
Mary (Wife) - ?????????????

William Carter - Born 1660 Middlesex Co, VA Died 2-5-1711
Mary Goodloe - Born 1667 Middlesex Co, VA Died 9-15-1744

George Carter - Born 4-22-1692 Middlesex Co, Died 1789 (Spotsylvania)
Elizabeth Proctor - Born 1694 ???, ??????????

Henry Carter - Born 5-15-1718 Middlesex Co Died 2-4-1773
Elizabeth ?? - Born 1720 Middlesex Co, VA Died 12-13-1780

Henry Carter - Born 1749 Culpeper Co, VA Died 5-23-1843 KY
Wife Unknown???

Henry Carter - Born 1788 Owen Co, KY Died 2-22-1859 KY
Betsy (Lizzie/Elizabeth) - Born 1809 ???, Died ?????

If someone would help me found out if these links are correct and perhaps any pictures of these people would be much appreciated. Obviously noone will have any pictures before 1830's. Please someone help, I need to finish this project soon for family sake. Thanks A bunch for reading this information. I just need as much information as I can get, especially the places where I can order all of these originals documents.

-Robert
