Carter Family in South Carolina

I am looking for my Grandfather's family in South Carolina. His name is Jack Carroll Carter, born 30 Dec 1917 in Sumter, Sumter, South Carolina. He married an unknown lady about 1935 and had three daughters, Willie Faye, Constance & Maxine. Sometime after 1940 they divorced and he moved to Texas where he met and married my Grandmother Jodell Pace and had five more children. They separated and Jack returned to Sumter, married a Janice Langford about 1970 and then died 15 Nov 1972 in Sumter. I would like to find more information about Jack's first wife and their children and also his parents and grandparents. I have limited info on his parents - Jesse Columbus Carter & Willie Marguerite Joyner, his grandparents - William Carter & Mary Quick. Any help you can give will be appreciated, maybe I can even help you.

Though the birth date is way off, it is still possibly the same person. Slaves often didn't know when they were born. My great grandfather was born free and by the time he died he couldn't tell you when he was born, so date inconsistencies are common, though 18-19 years is a big gap.

Also, a lot of these names are names that have been reused in my family. Eliza and John Perine should have had a son named James, who also had a son named James. This James is called grandpa Jim by my aunts and uncles. He came to Mississippi and had my grandfather Henry.

I have to ask around and see if anyone remembers these names you mention. Also, I need to get more info on the Carters of Al.

I found Eliza Perine died May 14, 1929 Uriah, Monroe co., AL F: Claibone Carte, M: Corrie Carte Spouse: John Perine. Eliza was 97 at death and b. abt. 1832.

I believe to have found this couple in Precinct 2, Salt Works, Clarke co., AL 1900 census. It has John Perine b. Maryland and married to Eliza born abt. 1850 [way off from death record birth year], married 13 yrs. (1887) and had 10-children- 7 living. Two children listed in that census were Rainy (male)b. Jan 1882 and Mary b. Ap 1884. They appear to be the only two children living with parents.

In 1870 AL Federal census John Perine is listed as born 1843 Maryland, 27 yr old black man.

There is an Ellen Carter in 1910 census Clarke co., AL Salt Works. Ellen is 63 and has 39 yr. old daughter Sarah [Mi___ can't make out last name and her son Elmore? who is 11 yrs old], and grand son John Perine 19, Henry Perine 16 also grandson living with her.

There is a Henry, 33 and Ellen, 34, surname Carter in the 1880 census Clarke co. Salt Works. with several children. Pricilla 14, Sarah 13, Jim 8, Eliza 5, Ellen 3 and Lottie 1. This Eliza b. 1875 could be relative and namesake.

Also found Perine spelled Pyrine. Hope this helps.

Wow! I just tried it. I have to find Eliza Carter's death certificate. On the certificate, her mother's name is Corsie. This Claiborne Carter owned a slave named Claiborne and one named Croesy. It's possible this could have been Eliza's mother. Checking records, I noticed many names misspelled or not listed consistently across different documents.

It doesn't list Claiborne and Croesy as being together but this doesn't mean they couldn't have had a child at some point.

Also, Eliza is not among the names, but she could have been sold off or left another way since she would have been about 30 at the time of this case.

Try this link for additional info. If you click on the different case numbers, you'll get additional info. If you click on the number 97 slaves in Claiborne's estate file, you'll get 2 pages of names of his 97 slaves. If you click on the individual names, you'll get the different families they belonged to and also some are noted at the bottom of the page that they were freed when Claiborne died according to his will. Link: http://library.uncg.edu/slavery/pSearch.aspx?s=2

Hope this link works for you.

I don't have anything else on them but will make a post if I find anything else. You can google the name "Claiborne Carter" in quotes to keep the name together, and should get the google books on line with the law suits. I'm on a computer that doesn't send out pages-links, but if you can't find it, I'll send it to you on another computer. It's interesting read on the legal law suits; 3 in all I think. I wish Claiborne had freed all of his 90 somthing slaves instead of trying to do so for just a few! At least he wanted those few to inherit his property instead of his kin folks.

Very interesting. I would assume that Eliza Carter's father was black because I have a picture of her and she doesn't appeared to be mixed. Also, slavery was still legal in 1860 and since the Claiborne you mention free at that time, I'd guess he wasn't Eliza's father, though he may well have been her owner and named her father after himself.

Do you have any more info on the black one?

There was more than one Claiborne Carter in AL. One was black. This Claiborn Carter was white and lived in Clarke county, AL and died in 1861. He had a half brother named Benjamin Carter who lived in AR and filed suit for himself and abt. 18 relatives over Claiborne's estate. The persons claiming rights to his estate were of the surnames of Allen, Carter, Jenkins, Shearin, Vaughan, Wilson, and Wren. The case went to the AL Supreme Court, Vol 53. Claiborne left Samuel T. Boykin and Robert D. James Sr. as administrators. One law suit was filed against them in Carter's Heirs v. Carter's Administrators, 39, ALA 579. It appeared that Claiborne had over 90 slaves. He also wanted his administrator Rbt. D. James Sr. to free his own children that he fathered that he owned, namely Francis B. James, Maria C. James Boykin, and Robert D. James Jr. so that they could inherit Claiborne's estate and enjoy the proceeds of the money they would make.

I only know of Claiborn Carter's name from Eliza Carter's death certificate. It didn't say when he was born but 1793 seems possible as Eliza was born around 1830.

I will have to do some digging to see where in Alabama Eliza Carter was from.

Sorry, none of the Carter names you listed sound familar...
My Carter's moved to Bartow County after 1860. They lived in the Cartersville Post Office district. I think that area was named after Farris/Ferris Carter. I am not up on his genealogy.. maybe I should be, but far as I know he has no ties to my Carters.. perhaps he does to yours? I also have some Carter connections around Rome, GA.. Paulding County, if I remember correctly.

VA and mother Mary Jane Ford Carter( born in Rockbridge Co. VA. Your g
grandfather does not appear in the 1880 census since he left home at age 15. The story goes that the altercation with his father was over a pig which he kicked so hard that it died. Did your g grandfather move to Arizona and have extensive property there? If so , I think this is the right family. I can send you more info.

I am looking for info on a Carter family who first appeared on the 1850 census in Bartow. Parthena Carter, age 36 is listed with her two daughters Nancy 8 and Peggy 4. They lived next door to H. Watson. I believe Parthena Carter married Hydra Watson a short time after. They later appeared in 1860 census in Bartow as one family with the last name Watson. I just located Hydra's will (Jan 1870) and it names Parthena Carter by name along with her daughters Nancy and Peggy.

I'm just wondering if of you may have her married to any of your Carters.

Thank you!

Susan Owens
Port Richey, FL

Re: Carters of Erath Co., TX

My Great Grandfather, John James Carter, was born and raised in Lafayette Co, MS. He and his family are listed in Erath, TX in the 1900 census. I'm not sure why they left MS. Their 3d son was named George Washington who died as an infant. Just wondered if they had relatives in Erath. By 1910 they are living in Beckham Co, OK.
