I just ran across your posting of June 18, 2009, on the message boards. I believe we may have made a connection. My maternal g-mother's name was Polly Burns Cottledge(Cartlidge)married to James Cottledge. The children have the same names, although are family always told us James and Polly were from Richmond County, Georgia, of course they could have lived in both counties at some time or other. If you would like to contact me you can through Ancestry or gupsdw915@att.net. Hope to hear from you soon I've been looking for a long time.

John Cartlidge born in Newcastle u Lyme, Lived in Warwick

Hi

Trying to trace the Cartlidge line of my family.

My greatx3 grandfather John Cartlidge was born in Newcastle u Lyme around 1800. He married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) who was born in Cork, Ireland around 1816.

I cannot find any record of their marriage or any records previous to the 1851 census which has the family living in Warwick, England. I also cannot find the family on 1861 census but they reappear on 1871 census after his daughter Martha had married George Davis.

Any further info anybody can find would be gratefully received!

Regards

Steve Davis

Hi Anthony
Sorry somehow I missed your message.
My Fred(e)rick who was born in Walsall 1874 had these siblings.
Albert 16 April 1860 (My Grandfather)
James Robert Samuel 17 Aug 1862
Hannah Letitia 9 Dec 1864
Howard Victor 1867
Sarah Ann Abigail 12 July 1869
Maria Margaret Ellen 18 April 1872
Jesse William 13 Dec 1876
Reuben 4 June 1878
Sydney Doctor 1880 (d 1881)

Their parents were James Cartlidge and Margaret Pemberton.
James and Margaret were married in Lancashire and Albert was also born there. The rest of the family were born in and around Walsall, Staffordshire. James was born in Astbury, Cheshire (1837-1929), his parents were Samuel Cartlidge (1807-1899) the Parish clerk at St Mary's in Astbury and Hannah Painter.
It would be interesting if you had some Pembertons somewhere as some of Margarets relatives also went to the U.S. They were connected with publishing and also the law I believe. The name Pemberton pops up in some of the Cartlidge names including mine.
Another member of the family has done a lot of work in that area. Her name is Joyce Cartlidge, she has written a book "Empress Eugene Her Secret Revealed" about the rumour that Margaret was the illegitimate daughter of a very young Empress Eugene. She set out to dispell the rumour and found it had some substance.
She asked me if I could manage to put you in contact with her. Can you contact me at: mike_heather@activ8.net.au and I will give you her e-mail address. I hope this will help you.
Only to willing to send more info if you need it.

Carole

Thanks for responding to my post. My Frederick is my second great grandfather. I have a marriage certificate and application that I found in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania records dated November 30, 1898. He Married Mary Jane Elizabeth Donaghey. From the Application, it says he was born in England, and because the writing is so unclear, it looks like it says birthdate is 4th day of May 1872. Acutally, looking at his signature, he signed his name Fredrick, no e between d and the r. Maybe a connection, maybe not. I also have the 1900 census of where he lived and it looks like birth year was 1874. I don't know which to believe. on the same census, it says year of immigration is 1896. he, and both parents of England. He was naturalized in PA. He was a chemist in 1900. He named (from what i know) his only son Robert. The next census I have is 1920 and he is deceased, his son Robert head of Household with grandmother, aunt, cousin.

I see the registered Birth in Walsall in April May or June 1874 but not spelled "fredrick". Unfortunately I did not print out the other one I saw from 1873 and I don't have access to it right now. There is still discrepancy for his year of birth, I thank you for your help and if you think you can offer any more help please let me know. THANKS!
I have Frederick Charles Cartlidge in my tree. He was born 4th May 1874 in Walsall Staffordshire. We believe that he emigrated to America but it all seems to be a bit of a grey area. His mother was a Margaret Pemberton and her father Robert Pemberton (Fredericks grandfather) and other members of the Pemberton's also emigrated. These Cartlidges were originally from Cheshire.
I know it's a stab in the dark, but you never know your luck.
I don't have an Ann in my tree, could you let me have more detail? I have quite a lot on the Cartlidge's of Ticknall, may be able to help.

Hi. Not sure if there's a relationship or just coincidence that my ggrandfather Thomas' family was living in Stoke Heath at the same time as your James. My gfather (also James) had been born in Market Drayton in 1865 before the family moved. It's possible my gang was living on the same farm but since the time frame is between censuses I haven't been able to establish this. A Joe Wright who replied to a posting in 2005 on another Cartlidge Board might have more info on your family. Would love to hear more esp anything that might help clarify if they were all related or not.

dave
