Diane, thank you so much for sharing! I would love any information you have on the Casper family. That's one of my "dead ends". My great grandmother was Cecelia (or Celia) Casper, married to Daniel Biwer. Thank you in advance for any info you can share!! Are you in the Milwaukee metro area? I live and work downtown. Best, Sarah Leet

sweet_dream_catcher@yahoo.com

Article about Bernard Casper of New Berlin

Found in the Waukesha Freeman edition of 3-26-1896, page 1, column 2. "Gas Killed Him" "Bernard Casper of New Berlin Meets Death in Milwaukee" -Bernard Casper, aged 70,postmaster at New Berlin, and an old resident of that town, was found dead in his bed at the residence of Frank Laner, a Milwaukee south-side saloonkeeper, Tuesday morning. Casper went to Milwaukee Monday, to visit friends. He stayed at Lamer's Monday night and in turning off the gas partly turned it back on again. The gas emerged so slowly that Casper did not notice it before going to sleep. The remains were brought to New Berlin and funeral services will be held there. Mr. Casper was born in Alsace, France, in 1821 and came to America in 1845, lived three years in Canada where he married Miss Catherine Lehman. They first resided in Milwaukee, and have lived in New Berlin since 1857. Mr. Capser was a prominent member of St. Valerius Catholic Church, and had held a number of town offices. He leaves a large family of grown children.-

I hope this helps anyone searching for info on Bernard. My daughter is a decendant of the Casper family (I,only through a marriage). I have more info on the family, and am willing to share to anyone related. Sincerely, Diane

There are some very early (1875) and rare notices in 3 of Milwaukee's German papers for a 4 yr. old Andrew Schneider, son of an Andreas and Katharina Schneider. Also an Andrew (d. 1877, d. 1915 in WWI), and several possibilities for Katharine.
Contact me for the full entries or other look-ups from the index of these papers.
Gary Rebholz
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com

I believe Bernard Casper was my great, great, great grandfather. His son Bernard married Phillipina Schaeffer. The 1880 census shows they lived at 320 5th Avenue in Milwaukee. Their daughter Alma Victoria Casper married Jean Birdener and lived in Oconomowoc. Their daughter Lorraine M. Birdener married my father Ira E. Walker. My wife Katherine Drent Walker and I live in Baraboo and have 2 children, both born in Manitowoc, James P. Walker and Rebecca J. Walker.

My line of Caspers definitely originated in Germany. My great grandfather, John Frederick Casper, emigrated around 1840 from Peppenhochstadt, Germany, with his 2 brothers, George and Mathias. He was 20 at the time. Their father, John Mathias Casper, joined them in the Kenton, Ohio area 20 years later.

Hi there

I have been researching my gg grandmother, Christina TOWERS. she immigrated to NZ from Scotland in 1872. I have just got her marriage Certificate. She married Alex OLSON in Queenstown NZ in 1875. I note that the witness that signed her marriage certificate was Mrs CASPER wife of Edward CASPER. I wondered if this could be your Casper Family. Do you know much of your relative Barbara TOWERS? I wonder if she is a relative of my gg grandmother Christina TOWERS. The only thing that I know of Christina is that her father is John TOWERS and she is from Renfrewshire (I think) Scotland.

I would be interested to know what you think!

Regards
Vic NZ

Have we corresponded before? Henry William Casper and Virginia Eugenia Johnson Miller were the parents of Philip Martin (or Milton) Casper, who was married to my grandmother's sister, Louella Sally (or Sarah Louella) Bishop. In my records Henry and Virginia had children: William Levi, Joseph A., Mahala E., Thomas Jefferson, Philip Martin/Milton, Robert Emmett, Barbara Elizabeth, David Muckleroy, Richard M., John, and Steve Olive -- eleven in all, there may have been more.

Interestingly, Virginia was a sister to Arnold Green Miller, who married my great-aunt Henrietta Ann Brooks Stevens. They had no children and Henrietta died young.

In my records, Virginia may have been a daughter of James A. Miller Jr. and Elizabeth Johnson. I don't have any verification of this, however.

Nancy Shire
Indianapolis, IN
