Forgive me if you've already received a Reply from me--I've been contacting several others related to Mark Cassells today. There were 2 Mark Cassells. One was "Mark of the Rocks" because his land was quite rocky. His cousin "Praying Mark" Cassells lived on adjacent land and their homes touched each other. If you can, subscribe to www.Ancestry.com where I posted a lot if info last year, although I'm no longer a member. Sure would love to see that school site in person. I own a piece of the roof slate tile but hear the building is no longer there. Best, Marla (Cassells) McLean, email: McLean@Alumni.usc.edu

I just posted another Reply regarding Mark Cassells. Please read it and, if you can, subscribe for a bit to www.Ancestry.com, where I have posted considerable information. My father Howard Cassells (91)is grandson to one of the 2 Marks--"Mark of the Rocks", whose land was quite rocky. His home touched the home of his cousin, "Praying Mark". It's just frustrating that there were 2 Mark Cassells cousins in the same proximity. That makes following ancestry confusing!
Would you have any info on the John Cassel & Mary E. Summers-Cassel? John's parents?

I am decendant of William Grant Cassel. I was told the family had some one change a name from Cassel to Cassell, but what I have found so far, is that The line of marriage records are all the same from John Cassel with the Exception of Grant, who's name on his wedding papers as William G Castle. Which seem to go with the family story, but it's not Cassell it's Castle that he changed too. It was a disbut over land Grant went to war.. Then asked his parents to buy him a house & land, some thing happened, they were told he was dead, when he wasn't, he came back to claim the land and John & Mary Cassel Claimed the land as their own, and would not pay back the money, so he changed his name to spite them.

John Cassel's parents came from KY but he was born in Indiana.. Been having trouble finding his parents.. ?? Can you help, paula??

My family were Mark Cassells born in 1700's and lived in Co Armagh, N Ireland.
A lot of his children came out to Ontario and then some came down into the states.
family members spelled the name Cassell, Cassel and Castles but my grandfather used the name Cassells. He came over to Canada about 1860 but his brothers started coming in the 1840's to Ontario.
I was told that they may have originated in Scotland but there is a German line which seems to spell the name Kassell
Kay in Tennessee

Hi Ms. Bennett: Thanks so very much for your reply. It would mean the world to me to find a living relative some place in this world. All my Cassel relatives are dead except me, I'm Doris Norma Cassel Hall and a Cousin William Hauckes who lives in Florida is the Son of Delores Cassel Hauckes. It's ashame I was so young when they died but I can give you the birthdate of my Beloved Father who was Wilfred Joseph Cassel, it's August 19th, 1917 and his Wife, my Beloved Mother, Doris Norma Cassel who's birthdate is May 7th, 1919. Also, Russell Cassel who was married to Agnes Cassel had a Daughter Joan Cassel. She married John Facenda around 1953 or about. Thank you for any information you can give me. Sincerely, Doris Cassel Hall, dorisnorma@gmail.com

Hey

I have found recently, that My Family line is from ky via census. I have gotten stuck with John Cassel & Mary Summers of Indiana. While Mary's is born in ky and family is there, John was born in Idiana but his Parents are from KY. and that's all I have on him. Now there was a old family feud over land that changed the family name from Cassell to Cassel. I have not found proof of this it is a family rummer passed down. you mention both plus Ky so I was wondering if there is any way the line is the same or connected.
Looking fo John Castle/Curtis born before 1907

I am looking for John Castle/Curtis. He was my grandfather and I have no information on him. I was told he changed his name to Castle. I am not sure how much truth there is to this or not but I was also told that my father had met family up in Iowa with the last name of Curtis. Thus was any where from around 10 years ago. His name was Edward Castle. He told my brother that the relatives he met were in their eighties, maybe younger. I an trying to find out information on my dads side if the family. I do know that John Castle was married to Sylvia E Castle and that they lived in Chicago, Illinois in the thirties and beyond. Any help or information would be appreciated. I am wondering if Castle could gave been spelled Kastl or Kaeatke or even some spelling if Cassell.

Re: Johannes Cassel Info

I have done a bit of Research on the Cassel Line but recently I have hit a snag, I was wonder if any one of you, whom has also done so, would you be able to help me fill in some info.

I hit my snag when I realised the John Cassel (1832 - 1880) Born of Peter Cassel & Martha Chitwood was not John Cassel Whom married Mary Summer, the census 1880 clarifies it.

My John Cassel is born about 1845 in Indiana, both Parents from Kentucky.

My Line

John Cassel 1845-Ind & Mary Elizabeth Summers 1849 KY

William Grant Cassel (1870 - 1952)& Mary Elizabeth Dean( 1870 – 1956)

Ezra Basil Cassel (1896 - 1973)& Bertha Naomi Murphy (1902 – 1942)

Robert Harold Cassel (1923 - 1962) - Amanda Parrish

Now.. These two Boys are intertwined all over the place the fact are they are not the same boys. So I am looking for a Kentucky Line Of Cassel Whom had a John Cassel around 1845.

Now, I was told by my father at a young age, that I could write my name as Cassell or Cassel, Due to there being a family disagreement, a family member droped the l to make him self different from the rest of the family.

One family member went to war, before he went to war he gave his parents a lot of money to buy land and build a house, for when he came back, in the chance he died, it was theirs to keep, but when he came back his parents keep the money and the house, So he changed his name from Cassell to Cassel. I know both Ezra & Grant both went to War, WW1 & WW2, Ezra went to both.

If any one know more who can help me, it would be much appreciated.

Who are John's parents? Ancestry.com give names that don't match up at all. The dates are wrong. Does any one know?

Re: CASSELL of KY

Hi LoisDurr51,

I am looking for a John Cassel Born in Indiana, Mother and Father from KY. Married a Mary E. Mary and bothe Parents are from KY.

He's in the 1880 United States Census Record. I have had this john as on with parents being Peter Cassel(whom is not from KY), but I believe this to be incorrect if this was the same john the birth year would be the same, and he would not be married in two different census at the same time. so I am looking of the Kentucky Connection, and line.

John Cassel and Mary E. had 4 children.
I was told Mary was a Summers but I have yet to prove it.
Could this John be related?

One thing my family told me up until I was 6 was I can call my self Cassel or Cassell, Due to a family member changing the family name from Cassell to Cassel due to a family conflict over land, John was to buy William Grant Cassel Land when he went to war, for William when he got back, if he died they could keep it, but when he got back, the John took the land for him self, and took the money from grant, and choose not to return it. So the name was changed. Although I have not yet found john parents due to there being a lot of miss direction, people say Peter Cassel and martha chitwood are his parents, but if you look at the 1880 census you will note Parents are from KY not NC, and the ages are about 10's apart, and John if that is the case was born after the death of Peter Cassel. So the in my reseach I found the two john are not the same, just i have not yet found enough info, to find the right parents, it's some where in the family storie I believe, due to the name change, not every one know it, they assume it's the same person.

1880 United States Census Record
Place of record: Taylor township, Owen County, Indianna
Date of Record: 1st of June 1880
Surname Given Color S Age AYOB RTH Ms BS FBS MBS Work
Cassel John W M 35 abt 1845 Head M Ind KY KY Farmer
Cassel Mary E. Arnold was one of them. You should see this booklet my mom had on immigrants from Sweden it is filled with Cassels.all the way back to the 1600

My name is Katherine WOOD GOODMAN and I am a great great grandaughter of Jacob & Jane CASSEL through their daughter Alice Susan CASSEL. I've been researching the CASSEL family history since 1988.

I have compiled information on your Henry CASSEL who I also believe to be a brother of Jacob CASSEL.

My working genealogy database can be found at:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kcgoodman

I would like to work together with other CASSEL researchers so that we aren't duplicating our efforts. Are you interested?

Pictures have surfaced this last year along with additional family information and it's really starting to get exciting.

Kathy

My name is Katherine WOOD GOODMAN and I am a great great grandaughter of Jacob & Jane CASSEL through their daughter Alice Susan CASSEL. I've been researching the CASSEL family history since 1988 and have put together several missing pieces and was thrilled to learn that your mother compiled quite a bit of CASSEL & NOLAND research as well. In particular I'm focusing in 2011 on the generations before Jacob G CASSEL and William NOLAND Sr.

My working genealogy database can be found at:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kcgoodman

Retiring a few years ago and moving to Alma, WI I live within a few miles of Eau Galle, WI where the CASSEL Family moved when they left Iowa. I would like to work together with other CASSEL researchers so that we aren't duplicating our efforts. Are you interested?

Pictures have surfaced this last year along with additional family information and it's really starting to get exciting.

Kathy

Hello,
I wanted to continue this thread to see if we can get more information. I just reread Calvin Columbus Castle's book. He says he was born 10 Jun 1830 in Cobb county, Georgia. His parents were French and they were some of the first settlers in South Carolina. Also, they were raised in South Carolina. So, I think he is saying that his parents were children when they arrived, married and then started a family. He talks about approx. 26 siblings. ( could they be from the same women) At one point, in the book, he refers to meeting a woman and man that spoke French and he stayed with them during the Civil War when he was injured because he could also speak French. I am trying to find out the names of his parents. I have been told though the internet that John Thomas Cassel and Frances Golden were his parents. They were born in the U.S. Also in a census Calvin states that his parents were born in France. So, I do not think the John and Frances couple are his parents.

Judy Campbell
abs511182aol.com

Here's something to start with:

WILLIAM BRETZ, born 16 Mar 1796 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA; died 11 Jan 1838 in Holmes County, Ohio, USA. He was the son of 8. JOHN BRETZ and 9. Catherine Fox. He married 5. Elisabeth Cassell 13 Apr 1819.
5. Elisabeth Cassell, born 28 Jul 1802 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA; died 24 Jan 1870 in Scott County, Iowa, USA.

Notes for WILLIAM BRETZ:
Biographical Notes from "Genealogy of the Ludwig Bretz Family, 1750 - 1890", by E. Winfield Scott Parthemore, Harrisburg, PA., 1890, published by Harrisburg Publishing Co.
XXX. William Bretz(3), (John(2), Ludwig(1)), b. March 16, 1796, in Dauphin county, Pa.; d. January 11, 1838, in Holmes county, O,; was a miller by trade and before moving to Ohio, which was in the year 1836, he was running the Andrew Miller mill in Dauphin conty, Pa. In his later years was a minister in the Church of God; m., April 13, 1819, Elisabeth Cassell, b. July 28, 1802, in Dauphin county, Pa., d. January 24, 1870, in Scott county, Iowa.

Catherine Ann Bretz, born 22 Sep 1824; died 12 Apr 1880; married Henry Cassel 03 Aug 1840; born 30 Mar 1822; died 22 May 1863. Henry was born in Dauphin Co, PA, enlisted in the Civil War from Millville, Clayton Co. IA at age 40 and died at Vicksburg. He appears to have had a relative, William Cassell, who enlisted the same day with him, but who survived the war.

Catherine Bretz and Henry Cassel had Elizabeth Caroline Cassel (Lizzie), who married Leonidas Metcalfe Peyton. Lizzie died in her 20s but we have no official record of her death or where she is buried.

Well between the 3 of us we should get a pretty good background on everything. What kind of info and dates do you have according to the Cassel lineage. I hope we can be a really good resource for each other If you need land docs or probate records I have some of them along with marriage liscenes and death certificates. My mother never through a SCRAP of paper away when it comes to genealogy. So please let us keep in touch and exchange what we can then we can write a book and be millionares ha ha
