Don't know if you are still researching Carl Lerain Cassler. Carl was the son of William P. Cassler (1865 prob. Elkhart, IN - 1925 prob. Cabell Co. WV) and Inez L. last name unknown (1865 OH - 1929 WV). They had four known children; Harry, Carl b. August 07, 1889, Elmer and William.

William P. was the son of John A. Cassler (b. March 12, 1843 OH d. March 14, 1898 Huntington, Cabell Co., WV and Anna B. Archer (b.abt. 1844 OH d. July 08, 1927 Washington DC). Anna's daughter, Grace, accompanied her body back from DC to WV so she could be buried next to her husband. Both are buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington, Cabell Co., WV.

John A. was the son of Samuel Cassler (who moved from Lancaster Co. PA to Stark Co. OH).

My research goes further back and focused on the early Casslers.

What can you tell me about Carl and his siblings?

Please feel free to contact me directly at gobrien1234@aol.com

Ernest Border Cassler's mother's ancestry is:

Cadilla Irene Border
Born 1-Dec-1870 Holsopple, PA
Died 16-Mar-1964 Davidsville, PA

Daniel W. Border, Jr.
Born 15-Mar-1841 Bedford County, PA
Died 15-Nov-1926 Holsopple, PA

Daniel Border
Born 8-Jan-1804
Died 13-May-1873 Davidsville, PA

Johannes Border
Born 25-Nov-1775
Died 11-Jul-1856

There is indeed more than 1 connection between the Casslers and the Borders. Your husband's Great-Grandfather Newton Orval Border had 2 sisters Cadilla and Maggie. Cadilla married Henry Horatio Cassler (my Great Grandfather) and Maggie married George W. Cassler (Henry's brother) Henry and George were also Sarah Cassler's brothers. So Ernest Cassler and Doris Border were 1st cousins on the Border side, and 1st cousin once removed on the Cassler side.
Your Husband and I therefore are 3rd cousins on the Border side, and my Nephew Alan who posted earlier (as well as my son and other nephews and nieces) are your husbands 4th cousins on the Cassler side.
You may have Stambach spelled wrong or the spelling was changed at some point, http://files.usgwarchives.net/pa/somerset/bios/cassler-alfre... has "Celia, who is the wife of James V.
I came across this thread when I searched "William Henry Harrison Cassler.". I am researching (which may be a strong word...) this line because my husband and children are descended from it. Yours is the first reference I could find to W.H.H. Cassler outside of the family info I got from my MIL. It appears we may be related even further, as I noticed that you listed an Ernest Border Cassler in your line, and my husband's grandmother was born Doris Rae Border! I'm interested in any information you may have on W.H.H.Cassler and his family\ ancestors. Here is my husband's line:
John (hubby)
Patricia Huber
Doris Border
Anna Caroline "Carrie" Stambach
Sarah Cecelia Cassler
William H. H. Cassler

I have no information to share w you in return; however, I do have a Cassler family photo from circa 1905, which has 52 people spanning 4 generations! John's aunt was able to identify several people in the photo, including our ancestor WHH.

Appreciate your time and trouble!
Kim

I can't seem to find a reason why why grandfather added Christian. He talked to Marcia, the one you were previously in contact with, and she basically confirmed what you stated about Johannes Cassler.

Marcia would like to know what your e-mail is, since she lost contact with you. You can e-mail me at alan@cassler.us. I feel safer putting my e-mail in a public forum over hers.

Hi, I have found only Johannes Cassler listed in German records as father of Johann Ludwig Cassler. I am the person who found the German records for descendents. I am also the person who received information regarding Gottlieb Wilhelm being the son of Jacob & Elizabeth (Schneider) Cassler. I passed that information to someone who descends from Jacob. For many years I had been keeping an eye open for William Cassler's--born July 14, 1806--parentage as that had not been discovered despite efforts. Last year I was fortunate to find his baptismal name through the Moravian Archives. I passed that information to a descendent of his who had been working on the family for a long time.
If you ever find the German source for Johannes' middle name being "Christian", please do let me know. At some point, I hope to go further back on the family from Johannes Cassler. I also would like to get a handle on the Bender name. Thanks. Marilyn Cossler Garrison

Not sure if that is the correct spelling or just a mistake.

I don't have the source for Johannes, but here are his entries for Johannes and his wife:

Johannes Christian Cassler
Born about 1682 Okriftel, Germany
Marr 26 Oct 1712 Langenselbold, Germany
Died 1761

Maria Elisabeth Bender
Born about 1695 Hoingen Germany
Died After Nov 1761

If I locate the source I will let you know.

Hi,
Thanks for your family line. You do know that Jacob Cassler was married to Elizabeth Schneider, don't you? I have done considerable research on the family. I am particularly interested in Johannes Christian Cassler being the father of Johann Lewis Cassler. I would like to know the source of information for the name "Christian" being his middle name. Johann Lewis (Ludwig) did have a brother whose name was William Christian Cassler. Thanks. M.
I am not aware of Goettel Moravian connections in Lancaster Co. PA. Lewis Cassler married Anna Christina Goettel/Gottel/Goettling in 1753 in Philadelphia, PA. She was born 14 Nov 1726 in Selingen, Ducy Zweibruchen. She came into Philadelphia in 1748 along with a group of Moravians. I have been unable to find other Goettels arriving during that same period. I have found no information regarding her parentage.
If you have any documentation of Goettel Moravian connections, I would appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you.

Lewis (Ludwig) Cassler (1718-1805) Family

Ludwig (Lewis) Cassler (Moravian) was born in Langenselbold, Hesse, Germany, April 2, 1718, and died September 10, 1805, in Bethlehem, Northampton Co. PA. His first marriage was to Anna Elizabeth Ruth. They were married in Germany before they traveled to this country. They arrived into Philadelphia in 1750.He is listed on ship records as Ludwig Kassler. From his first marriage he had 3 sons: #1 John Cassler, b. 1748 (Germany); d. prob. bef. 1805: #2 twins Ludwig and #3Peter Cassler, b. 1751-both died 1752. After the death of his first wife in 1752, Lewis Cassler married Anna Christina Goettel in Philadelphia. They built the first permanent house in Lititz, PA and moved there about 1759 with their family. From his second marriage, Lewis Cassler had 10 children: #1 Wilhelm Cassler, (1754/1829). William and wife, Anna Rosina Tanneberger Cassler remained in Lancaster Co. PA; Ludwig Cassler (Lewis Cosler) (1756/1817) Lewis Cosler, and wife Anna Catherine Maser (Moser) eventually settled in Greene Co. OH: #3 Jacob Cassler, (1758/death poss.1828); #4 Elizabeth Cassler (1760/1760): #5 Anna Maria Cassler (1761/1781): #6 Magdalena Cassler (1763/ ?): #7 Christina Cassler (1765/1769): #8 Anna Elizabeth Cassler (1767/1769): #9 Anna Christina Cassler (Mrs. Abraham Levering (1769/1849): #10 Matthew Cassler (1771/1832) who settled with his wife, Margaret Rummage, in Northampton Co. PA.
I am interested in communication with anyone who believes they are descended from this family. Sons of Lewis Cassler's appear to have moved around into various counties in PA. Lewis Cosler was in West Virginia for awhile before going into Ohio. John Cassler seems to have been in Bucks County at one time. I believe that Jacob Cassler died in Lancaster Co. PA in 1828. There are some Dauphin Co. PA records for the family.

Re: Lewis (Ludwig) Cassler (1718-1805) Family

The name in Germany is generally spelled "Cassler, Kassler, Kasseler, Casseler". Upon Ludwig (Lewis) Cassler's (1718/1805) arrival into this country in 1750, the name was usually spelled "Cassler". When his son, Lewis Cassler, Jr., (1756/1817) settled in Greene Co. OH, the name became "Cosler" and his descendents generally use that spelling. I, however, have seen it spelled "Cassler" in some records for his descendents. Lewis "Cosler" Jr. had a son named Henry, who went by the spelling "Cosler". There are several members of the Cassler family named "Henry". Henry Cassler, born 1822, was a cousin of the Henry Cosler of Greene Co. OH. Some descendents of Lewis Cassler, Sr. also carry the "Cossler" spelling. The name "Cassler" appears to have been pronounced originally closer to the pronunciation of "Cossler" and "Cosler"...the "o" being pronounced as "ah" instead of the "long a". Those writing it spelled it the way they heard it. The change in spelling took place in this country after the family arrived here.

CASSLER - Edgerton, St. Joseph Twp. Williams Co., OH

Am interested in anyone researching or who has info on the CASSLER family that lived in Edgerton, St. Joseph Twp., Williams Co. OH from abt. 1850-1880. HENRY (born PA) and his wife ANNA BRADY/CASSLER (m. Stark Co. OH 1843) are in 1850 St. Joseph Twp census with 3 of their 6 children (we believe born in St. Joseph Twp), ALLEN B. b. 1844-45, DAVID W. b. 1845, CALVIN S. b. 1847-48, and probably 2 nieces - CHRISTINA b. 1834-35 (PA) and CATHERINE b. 1837 OH (Catherine married William A. BRATTON/BRATTEN in 1863 and remained in Edgerton/Williams Co. until her death 1925). 1860 census lists next 3 children; HENRY A., b.1852, AMANDA E. b. 1854-55, and SAMUEL P. b. 1857. I cannot find them in 1870 census. In the 1880 census HENRY is living with the Nathan KODER family, 2 of the son's are in Indiana, and his wife and 2 sons are in MI. HENRY was a farmer, in a book on Williams Co. 1882 it notes "HENRY lived 3 miles north of Edgerton and his barn was used for church services." If you have any information, please contact me. Thanks, Gail

Hi Judy,

Henry Cassler is a decendant of this Lewis Cassler line (Lewis 1718-1805 / Wilhelm 1754-1829 / Samuel 1789-1864 / Henry 1822-1903). Samuel settled his family around the Stark Co. OH area.

Not all of the Cassler's changed their surname to Cosler/Cossler. Those who did were:

Lewis 1756-1817(son of Lewis 1718-1805 - brother to Wilhelm 1754-1829) This Cassler/Cossler line settled around the Greene Co. OH area.

And William 1783-1854 (son of Wilhelm 1754-1829 - brother to above Samuel 1789-1864).

Hope this helps you.
Gail

Thank you for your reply, Andrea. With the locations and the name you have given me, I am certain you are of the Cassler family I am researching. Do you know Helen Cassler's father's name? We all descend from Ludwig (Lewis) Cassler, 1718/1805, a Moravian. He came into Philadelphia in 1750. He died in Bethlehem in 1805 and is buried in God's Acre. If you are interested in the family, I will send along information. Marilyn

Hi Adele,
I have a Fred Kassler in Elizabeth Boro, Allegheny Co., PA, 1910 Census, ED 66, Sheet 12A. Fred is working at Marine Ways with his brother in law Leander Lambert and living with his wife Janie and in laws Henry and Janie Lambert. I believe Henry is the brother of my ggf. Fred also lists his parents as born in Germany. I have more info on the Lamberts but this is all I have on Kassler except for what I found on the Marine Ways Website which lists a Henry Lambert and another Kassler, perhaps the father of Fred. If you don't have that website, let me know and I'll send it to you. I tried to post it to an earlier message and lost the message.

LAMBERT Henry Head age 79
Janie wife 69
Leander son 48
Kassler Fred son in law 34
Janie daughter 35

Good luck,
Lloyd Wilson
lewlaw@csonline.net

I don't know if there is a connection, but hope there is.

My ggg-grandfather, Henry Cassler, was born in Pa (don't know city or county) abt 1822. He married Ann(ie) Brady in Stark Co. Ohio in 1843. He is listed in the 1850 OH census for Williams Co., Div. St. Joseph, along with his wife, three of their seven children, Allen (b abt 1844-OH), Calvin (b abt. 1847-OH), and David (abt 1845-OH), and with, who must be, two sisters, Christina (b abt 1834 PA) and Catherine (b abt 1837 OH). They later moved to Indiana (LaPorte, Porter Co. area).

Please let me know if this fits with any info you have.

Gail

My grandmother's maiden name was Helen Cassler, she was born in Bethlahem PA Dec.14, 1900 She had a sister Greta, and a brother Harvey. I think she had other brothers and sisters, but when her father passed away, they were sent to a foundling home in Lancaster PA. Harvey was living in Beth. PA, he died in 1985, however his wife Sarah is still living there. My grandmother passed away Nov, 1970. I don't know if this is any help, or information, but if it is let me know. Thanks.

Marilyn,

I only know that John E. Holdread is a descendant of Christian Holdread who settled in the area of Locke Twp, Elkhart Co, IN John (above) and Ruth Catherine Cassler are buried in Union Cemetary which is in Indiana, I think. On what they formerly called "Dunkard", Rt #17 A possible location for the cemetary is West Twp, Elkhart Co, Indiana, I am sure it is documented as a well-known cemetary.

I realize the tie to Holdreads (my own surname is Holderread, but I am related to Holdreads) is somewhat obscure as we have only one marriage that I know of in the family tree to a Cassler. If you need to know, perhaps the children's names, I can supply you those if you respond again.

Thanks to be of help
Tom Holderread

Transcription from "Old Moravian Cemetery of Bethlehem, PA., 1742-1897", Augustus Schultze.
"Louis CASSLER, 1718-1805 from Langenselbold, principality of Birstein, (Hessen) Germany; a shoemaker. After the death of his first wife whose maiden name was RUTH, he married Anna C. Goettling, and moving to Lititz, built himself a house there, the first private house of the place. He had 13 children." I descend from his oldest son by his second marriage, Wilhelm CASSLER. Wilhelm CASSLER, Sr. was married to Anna Rosina Tannenberger. They are known to have had 5 children, 4 sons (Wilhelm Jr. (my ancestor), David Ludwig (Lewis), Samuel, and Johann Christian and a daughter, Salome. I am interested in sharing information with anyone working with this family.
