Hi Bridget,

James Castel/Castle was my 4th great grand uncle. His brother John was my 4th great grandfather who married Margaret or Jane Roy. Providing my findings are correct, there was another brother Peter, born 1759. I have their father as being James (no dates or wife info), his father before that as James chr 28 Dec 1704 Tifty Fyvie. Then I have his parents as William Castell born approx 1660 and Issobell Davidson. I see that the spelling changed through the generations.
Sorry I don't have much more, however I shall pass it on if I find anything.
Regards
Karen Hewitt (nee Begg)
Queensland Australia.

Hi Rosie,
I've certainly never met another Castel De Oro that wasn't a relative. From what I understand "Castel" is French, and "De Oro" is Spanish or Italian. There is/was supposedly a fort called Castel De Oro in Naples Italy, and I've heard though not confirmed rumour of another fort in Madrid, Spain. As cousin Sylvian once suggested, the one area of the world that seems to combine French, Spanish and Italian influcences is Basque country. This has become my generic answer when people ask about my name, I just tell them "I think it might be Basque"
Cheers,
Jeffrey Castel De Oro

Sara

Have you any idea which part of Scotland Alex Castel was from?. I have done research regarding Castel's in Aberdeenshire born up to 1881, although I have some data after this date.
My research tends to suggest that families with this spelling were concentrated in the North East of Scotland. On the West Coast they tended to use Cassel.

Regards

Brian
