Re: Zachariah CASTILE / CASTEEL

Hello,
I am Terry Moore from Oklahoma City, OK. My great grandmother or my grandmother Moore's mother was Hettie Casteel. She married Jacob Luster. My grandmother's maiden name was Luster. Anyway, I am a decendant of Zachariah Casteel. I have his last will and testament dated April 26, 1811. It is said that Zachariah and wife Elizabeth probably came from Pennsylvania to Greene County, TN before 1795. The Moore family settled in Greene County, TN and Hardin County, KY then moved to Arkansas. I think they had some Cherokee and Choctaw indian blood, however it would be hard to prove. I am pretty sure the Casteel family have some indian blood also, however am not sure if they are on any indian tribal roles. Zachariah married Rebecca Hartley in 1818. His children were Peter, John, Edward, Daniel, Jeremiah, Rachel, Margary, Ruth, Mary, Margaret, and Naomi. I am decended down from Edward who begat Elkannah Casteel born in Greene Co. TN in 1806 or 1807. If you need any other information, I may be able to mail you a couple of things. My great aunt made a family history book before she died and gave it to each of the Moore cousins. God bless! Hope I helped you out. Sincerely Terry J. Moore

But I have found family that use the real spelling and and few other ways too. I found must of my family in Hardin County and counties around Louisville. I got alot of my info from Catholic Churchs, The Castiles was Catholic.
http://www.kentuckylines.com/news.php Have you joined this web site.
Hi,
You can't always go be the years. My greatgrandmother Indiana Jenkins death record says she was born in 1858 but she was born in 1846. So want you have to do is send for the death record and see who gave the info on his death and if it is someone you have in your family line are if it has his wife as Carrie. People who give info on the death records doesn't always have the info right. Just like when my mother died I gave her dads name as Lee Casteel but it is Levi Casteel and my Aunts death record has him as Levi Elliott but Elliott was their mothers last name.
Look up Hopkins County Cleak of Court and see if they have a online order for records. If not it should tell you where you have to send for them.
I was born in Indiana, and right now I'm tring to find out info on My grandmothers side of the family there. She was born in English,Crawford County.I have always known her name to be Ida Jane Elliott but everything is looking like her name was Eliza Jane Elliott.
I know that Bernard Castile's mother was Lou Blouchard it has it on the Kentucky birth records he was born 2/14/1917 in Hopkins County.
It also has 2 other kids by her born in Hopkins County.
Dudeaner Castile born 8/22/1922
Ruby Castile Born 2/21/1926.
Phyllis

Dated June 8, 1900.

line 49, Casteel, S.T. ; Head, W, M; B. Aug 1866; age 33, married 6 years, self and father's birth:TN
Line 50, ----, Carrie, wife, W, F, b. June 1878, age 21; married 6 years, self and parents born in KY
line 51, ----, Lemon W., son, W, M, b. Feb 1895, age 5; born KY
line 52, -----, Effie M. ,daughter, W, F, b. May 1898; age 2; KY
Tom was a farmer.

1910 CENSUS Hopkins County, KY, dated April 20, 1910:
lline 19, Cassteel, Thomas, head, M, W, age 45, married (2), 16 years, self and parents born in TN
line 20, ----------, Carrie, Wife, F, W, age 33, married (1), 16 years, self and parents born in KY
line 21, --------, Lemon W. , son, M, W, , age 15, single KY, gen farm worker
line 22, --------, Effie M, daughter, F, W, age 12, single , KY
line 23, -------, Edgar, son, M, W, age 9, single , KY
line 24, ------, Ruby, son, M, W, age 6, single, KY
line 25, -------, Amme L, daughter F, W, age 2, single. KY

last child is Amanell.

This recent census states that Thomas was 45. So he couldn't be the Thomas that died in 1916 at 41.

I had found that Carrie death info also and saved it for future reference until I know for sure. I wish I knew Thomas' parents names.

Angela

Hi! I still haven't had a chance to look at your info. I had trouble with the sign in, now I got it right, but I haven't had the time. I recently found some info on the 1900 census, after you mentioned the other spelling, I tried inputting that here's what I found:

Madisonville, Hoplins CO, KY 1900 Census.
CASTEEL, S.T. (I think!), w, m, Aug. 1866, age 33, married 6 years, born in Tenn, father born in Tenn, Mother born in KY
CASTEEL, CARRIE, wife, w, f, june 1878, age 21, married 6 years, mother of how many children: 0, 0 living, self, mother and father all born in KY
CASTEEL, LEMON W., son, w,m, feb. 1895, age 5, born KY FATHER BORN IN KY(??) son of carrie? this is a wierd census report!
CASTEEL, EFFIE M, w, f, may 1898, age 2, born in KY

I couldn't find Lemon on 1910 census so far, but he's on the 1920 census:
Lemon Casteel, 23, KY, father un-US(?) coal miner
Lou Casteel, 20, wife,
Minard (really Bernard), age 3 8/12. (my husband's grandfather)
What is interesting is that the family listed next on the census Rufus J Majors, had 6 kids, the last child on the list was Edgar Casteel, ADOPTED SON, I think it says he's14, coal miner, father born un-US??!!) Lemon had a brother named Ed. Possible Edgar. I wonder if their father was dead by this time and the neighbor adopted him?? BUT if they adopted him wouldn't he have takem their name?
I also found the draft registration card on Lemon Casteel, correct age.

Hey! I wonder if they are the same branch. MY husband's Castile's are from Kentucky. But I can't get anywhere with that branch. I was told they came over from Spain, Barcelona???? Anyway supposedly they stowed away. So nothing can be proven. They lived like gypsies (his grandfather) so it was hard to have him nailed down anywhere long enough to register anything. See if you have any of these names in your tree.
Tommy Ray Castile b. 2-14-1942
Bernard Whitson Castile b. 2-14-1917
Leman Whitson Castile b.2-2-1895
Thomas J Castile b. 1853 ?? I haven't proven this. Any of it. The name is something that was passed down, but not confirmed. Leman settled in Christian, KY (Hopkins County) Thomas (Tom) was said to be married to a Carrie Wright. (???) They had the following children: Ed, Ruben, Amanell (b. 1907-1983) and Leman, Leman was married to LouAnna Blanchard (b. 1892-1973) they had: Bernard Whitson Castile, Dudeaner Castile, Bonnie Castile, Whitson Castile (died as infant), Ruby Castile (died as infant). This is all I have, Oh! The rumor is that the "old man Tom" (Thomas) went crazy or something and shot himself in the head.

They had 8 children...James B., born in AL, William Edward, Mary Elizabeth, Virginia Abigail, Laura Whittenburg, George Madison, all born in Pulaski County, AR and John and Thomas born in TX.
Can you give me some names maybe 1-3 generations back and see if they match mine? My husbands family are not big on sharing facts, or they don't have any.
Mine are:
Bernard Castile b. 1917 d. 2006 his father was:

Leman Castile b. 1895 , d. 1984 (spelled various ways) his father was, possibly:

Tom Castile.
Tom was said to me married to Carrie Wright.
This is strange but Leman's sister was Amanelle Castile (Denton) and her obit stated that her father was Thomas J Castile. But I can't find him anywhere. I didn't see the obit, my mother in law wrote down what it said and gave it to me, So I'm not sure. Do any names sound familiar to you? Leman had other brothers and sisters. But I can't verify.

I am looking for ancestors of George W., my gggrandfather. According to 1900 & 1910 census, he was born in 1873 in TN. I have heard through other relatives that it was rumored that he killed a black man around Savannah, TN, and fled into AL changing the spelling of his last name. I am not sure about this as I can find no records. The 1900 census show him in Waterloo, Lauderdale, AL, as CASTILE. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Castiles from Crowley, LA

I have recently traced my family back to Crowley, LA.
Does anyone else have any information on any
Castiles from Crowley or Brobridge?
My great-grandmother was Beatrice Castile who
married John Johnson. Her grandfather was
Norbert Castile. I've been told my family
migrated to Los Angeles in the 1920's.
