I'm looking for any information on the family line of William James CASTLE, born in 1867 or 1868 in Stepney, Middlesex, England. He was married in 1888 to Minnie Grace IRWIN also of Middlesex and died in 1947 in Essex, England.

His parents names were William CASTLE, born approx. 1847 in Stepney, Middlesex and Sarah CLACK born approx. 1850 of Middlesex. I believe that this William's parents were named William CASTLE born approx. 1806 in London and Ann BAKER born approx. 1811 in London.

William James had at least one son, William Victor CASTLE who was born in England but moved to Lachute, Quebec, Canada. Any information on this line would be most appreciated!
Lt. Col James Castle WWII, Sapporo, Japan

We would like to connect with family of Mr. "Jim" Castle, who served in WWII and was the CIC Chief in Sapporo, Japan, Troop No. 9, Division No. 77.

During the WWII occupation of Sapporo, Lt. Col Jim Castle was responsible for war crimes, but found no evidence on Gen’l Higuchi and then treated him kindly. Lt. Gen'l Kiichiro Higuchi was a Japanese army officer whose actions helped save the lives of over 20,000 refugees who were fleeing from the Nazi Holocaust.

Kiichiro Higuchi kept a diary, which is now with one of his grandchildren. Kiichiro recorded positive comments on Lt. Col Jim Castle and how Castle treated him.

Lieutenant General Higuchi's only living son-in-law, Mr. Yoshikata Hashimoto, would like to thank Colonel Jim Castle or his wife, if they (or perhaps other family members) can be located.

I hope you can help us find Colonel or Mrs. Castle or, perhaps, a descendant so that Mr. Hashimoto can provide them with a message of gratitude.

Thank you, in advance, for whatever assistance you can provide.
Hi I've just begun researching my paternal family. George Castle(s) was born in Walkern Hertfordshire UK around 1820. His parents were Thomas Castle(s) and Hannah (Hanorah) Cann. George was convicted of a crime and transported to Australia. Here he married Ann Burgess in 1844 and they had a tribe of kids. Would love to hear from anyone with connections to Walkern or these particular names. Thanks.
Email: susandall@hotmail.com

I'm especially looking for information regarding Indian heritage.

According to her death certificate, she was born March 26, 1805; daughter of William Castle (English) and Ann Saxon (French)
Her place her birth is reported as New York state.

She was the second wife of Benjamin Knower of Albany, whom she married June 26, 1836 in NYC. Upon his death in 1839, she vanishes, then appears in censuses 1850 through 1880 as Sophia P. Knower, a resident in the households of Cornelius Dickerson, then Marcena Dickerson of Rockland, N.Y. Her relationship to head of household is "other."

She died Sept. 27, 1886 in Nyack N.Y., Robert Dickerson (or Dickinson!) reporting her death.

Can anyone tell me how she was related to the Dickerson family, or what the name of Cornelius Dickerson's wife was?

The family name is sometimes reported as Dickerman and Dickinson, but I believe Dickerson is the right name.

thanks ...
emily

Does anyone have any info on an Effie May Castle, probably born in 1886-1888 in AL, most likely in Jackson Co. where she resided with her husband, William M. Jones, birthdate unknown. She later married a Lee Hamilton and resided in Marion Co., TN. She had at least one daughter with William, a Bessie May Jones, born in 1915. She may have had another daughter with him who died in childhood after being attacked and eaten by a wild boar. She had three children with Lee, a son Robert and a son Sheldon "Kay", and a daughter Lilly. These children were born in the early to mid 20's in TN. I need info on her parents or sibs if anyone has this info. Also, marriage dates and places or what towns she resided in. Thanks for your help.

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 14 May 1903, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

MUST GO TO PENITENTIARY

Jesse Morrison Sent up for Twenty-five Years for Murder

Topeka, Kansas: The supreme court affirmed the decision of the lower court in the case of the state vs Jesse Morrison. Jesse Morrison was declared guilty of killing Mrs. Olin Castle three years ago at the Castle home in Eldorado. The decision means 25 years.

The decision was written by Justice John C. Pollock, the others concurring. It says in part: "Upon the theory of the tragedy as maintained by the state, the murder was a butchery of such savage and vicious nature, as is rarely equalled, never excelled, in the criminal history of a civilized world; that search for a parallel so shocking must be among the traditions of eborigines. It was indeed a brutal deed, utterly lacking in mitigating or extenuating circumstances, alike appalling to the mind and shocking to the sensibilities.

Isaac CASTLE and Harriet LEWIS - Hendred to NSW

I'm working on the Castle and Lewis family members that moved from East and West Hendred to Australia in the 1800's., and this entry in my blog http://thehistoryofmatt.blogspot.com/ relates mainly to what I know of the CASTLE boys. I'll write on the Lewis family next. Would love to hear from any descendents.
cheers
matt

Isaac CASTLE and Harriet LEWIS

This entry relates to the CASTLE brothers Isaac and James, sons of William CASTLE (b. 11 Dec 1798) and Amy ROBERTS from West Hendred, Berkshire, England. They married on 27 Jun 1828 in East Hendred, Berkshire. In the 1841 and 1851 censuses William, gave his occupation as Agricultural Laborer. James was born in 1826, and his brother Isaac in 1831, two of five children. William CASTLE had died by December 1856 as James and Isaac state in their immigration records that their father is deceased, and their mother Amy ROBERTS had married for a second time in 1853 to James RIVERS.

Note: a number of on-line GED’s I’ve found indicate that their father William CASTLE also died in Australia in the same year as James LEWIS. I can find no record of William CASTLE in Australia thus far, and the evidence above suggests that this is erroneous.

I have a few certificates scanned by others that are poor quality, and I’ve pieced a lot together from what others have and I’ve cobbled it all into my GED file.

James married Leah LEWIS on 5 August 1848 in West Hendred Berkshire, and in the 1851 census they lived in East Hendred with their 2-year old son William in the home village of the Lewis girls. In 1855 Isaac marred Leah’s younger sister Harriet LEWIS at St Giles Church in nearby Reading prior to both couples departing for Australia in Dec 1856 on the Beejapore from Southampton. They landed in Sydney in March 1857, their arrival entries stating that the CASTLE boys were from West Hendred, their wives the Lewis girls from East Hendred, and none of them could read or write. Both couples lost a child on the voyage; Isaac and Harriet lost 1-year-old Mary Ann, and James and Leah lost an infant also named Mary Ann.

James and Leah had two children born in England, another born at sea and dying, and the remaining children born from 1858-1870, in and around the Sydney, Parramatta and the St George area where James and Leah seem to have lived. Some are transcribed in the NSW BDM as CASSELL rather than CASTLE, and CASTLES is also present (given the English pronunciation of Castle this makes sense).

Concurrently, Isaac and Harriet seem to have made their way to Bathurst, NSW relatively quickly, as they have a child in Enmore NSW on 25 May 1857 two months after arriving (a second Alice Ann 1857-1920, namesake of the first lost on the voyage), thence all others from 1859-1872 were born/registered in Bathurst, Black Rock, or Cowra, though these are only transcript entries at the BDM site, not copies of the certificates themselves, which will ultimately yield much more information.

Summary of known children born to Isaac CASTLE and Harriet Lewis, though much information is based on NSW BDM transcripts and needs to be confirmed.

1. Alice Ann, christened 24 Feb 1856, East Hendred, Berkshire, England. Died in 1857 on voyage to Australia.

2. Alice Ann, born 25th May 1857, Enmore, NSW. Probably married John Inglis (recorded as Alice CASSELLS), Coonamble, 1885 and died 1920, Carcoar, NSW.

3. Charles William, farmer. Born 1859, Bathurst NSW. Married Emily Ann Potter at Binnie Creek, NSW on 07 Dec 1887, and died while living in Paddington NSW in 1927.

4. Leah Ann, born 1860 in Bathurst NSW, and married James ARMSTRONG, 1883, in West Macquarie NSW. Died in Murrumburrah, NSW in 1911 (the same year as her father).

5. Jacob, born in 1862 and died in 1862 at Dennis Island NSW, registered in the Bathurst Lonely Graves Register. Dennis Island was apparently an enclave of Methodist families.

6. Amy CASTLE (my great great grandmother). Born 1 Jul 1864 at Black Rock, Bathurst, NSW. Married Samuel Litson Border on 1 Jan 1884 at Wallaroo, Cowra, NSW and had 13 children, at least eight of whom survived adolescence, as they were alive when she passed away on 11 Mar 1940 at Sydney Hospital, late of 17 Oatley Rd, Paddington.

7. Jacob CASTLE (transcribed as Male CASTLE), born 1866 in Bathurst NSW. Married Flora MCKENZIE 1891, Cowra NSW. Died, Cowra NSW in 1940.

8. Abraham CASTLE, born 1872 and died Apsley, NSW in the same year.

and twin:

9. Isaac CASTLE, born 1872 and died Apsley, NSW in the same year.

It is not clear where the error lies at this early stage, however Isaac CASTLE’s death certificate in 1911 correctly gave four living family members (Alice A, Charles, Amy and Isaac) but only 1 female deceased.

Harriet Lewis’ death is thus far a mystery. A perennial error reported is that Harriet died in 1882. This is probably based on the following BDM entry:
1882 CASTLE, HARRIET f: THOMAS m: MARY PARRAMATTA

But this is not Harriet, whose parents were John and Dinah – that her husband, sister and brother-in-law were all alive, and that her sisters death in 1908 correctly lists her parents names further discounts this. Searches of the NSW BDM with all possible spellings of Harriett, and CASTLE (CASSELL, CASSELLS, CASTLES, etc. and LEWIS) or her parents names has yielded nothing. Harriett’s brother Stephen LEWIS (whose mysterious story is for another entry) spent approximately 20 years in NSW prior to arriving in Queensland about 1877, but no death records exist for a Harriett CASTLE/LEWIS and permutations in Queensland.

The search continues. Isaac appears not to have re-married at any point.

Isaac CASTLE died on 9 Aug 1911 in Cowra NSW aged 87, his son stating he lived in Wallaroo, ‘near Cowra’. The headstone transcript from Bathurst FHG states that he married Harriet Lewis. The name Wallaroo comes up in a number of certificates, and Cowra FHG informed me it was approximately 5 miles out along the Canowindra Road on the left, once a tiny village, a church and a school. The school was removed about 50 years ago to Wiltendale Road, further off Canowindra Road to the right, well back off the road.

Isaac’s brother James CASTLE is listed in the 1872 Greville directory in Blacktown (west of Sydney) as a laborer. At some point after having their children (their last child John was born in 1870), James and Leah appear to have moved to Bathurst, perhaps to be with Isaac and Hrriet? James died in 1896 and Leah in 1908, both in Bathurst NSW.

Harriet and Leah LEWIS had other members of their family move to Australia following their departure, though those details, and whether they even knew this, will be the subject of a subsequent entry. There’s much more to discover about the CASTLE’s. Once completed I’ll post their time-line.

Castle in GA, SC and TN

Hello all,

I am new to this message board thing, so please be patient with me.

I am looking for any information on Columbus C. Castle born Nov. 3, 1858 (according to death certificate) in Georgia. Death certificate lists father at either Tom or Lom Castle. I found Columbus (age 1) on 1860 census living with E. Castle, female who is 43, in Chattooga Valley, Chattooga, Co., GA. She could be his mother or his grandmother as there is also listed a Nancy Castle who is 27. Both E. and Nancy show place of birth as South Carolina. Columbus shows place of birth as Georgia. This census also shows Robertson, age 15 male, and Charles, age 9 male, both born in South Carolina.

I found Columbus in 1870 census indexed as McDaniel in Jasper, Marion Co., TN. I believe this is an indexing error because Elizabeth Cassel (age 59) is listed at top of household and then is listed Martha McDaniel, female age 27 born in S.C.. This census also lists William, age 11 male b. S.C., Daniel, age 2 male b. TN, and Charles, age 18 male b. S.C.. I believe William and Daniel are Martha's boys and Charles and Columbus are Elizabeth's. All four boys are listed under Martha with no last names.

I find Columbus Castle again in 1900 living with his wife, Rebecca, and their children in Marion Co., TN. Rebecca is listed as Columbus' second marriage. I would like any information that anyone has on his first marriage or his parents.

Thank you,
Stephanie

Daniel Castle- New York

Chapter 20
THE CASTLE FAMILLY
THE SETTLERS OF THE BEEKMAN PATENT

This family was in the Pawling area of Beekman very
early. SAMUEL CASTLE was running a mill on the road to
New Fairfield by 1745 but died in 1761. We are not
positive of his ancestry but a member of the Castle
family of Woodbury, CT came to the Amenia area and there
may be a connection that we have not found. There are
no land records in Beekman or Pawling for the Castle
family. [Primary source is History of Ancient Woodbury,
Ct., 528]. A brief sketch of the Castle family of Amenia
follows.
DANIEL3 CASTLE, (Isaac2, Henry1) was born 8 Oct. 1717
at Woodbury, CT and died 7 June 1777 in Amenia. He was
bd. in the Burial Ground at Steel Works, on the road
between S. Amenia and Wassaic. [NEBG 126]. He m.
Elizabeth _____ who died in Amenia 28 April 1804 in her
84th year and was bd. in the same place.
In Jan. 1761 Daniel Castle was on a 108 acre farm in
lots 47 & 48 in the Oblong, (Nine Partners). He was
taxed in Crum Elbow as "Castle Esq." from June 1759
through Feb. 1762 and then in Amenia to 1773 when the
listing became Daniel, which in turn became "estate" in
1778.
He was a witness on a deed of 25 March 1760 between
Joseph Clapp of the Oblong and Daniel Reed of Norwalk.
[D 3:351]. On 13 Jan. 1773 Robert G. Livingston of NYC
sold 979 acres of lot 30 in Amenia to Daniel Castle
Esq., Gideon Castle, James Reed, Extra Reed and Gershom
Reed, all of Amenia. The consideration was £725. Two of
these Reeds were sons-in-law to Daniel Castle. [D
6:395]. Daniel and Samuel Castle were witnesses together
on 5 June 1759 for a deed involving lots in the Oblong.
[D 4:54].
His will was made 14 May 1777 and proved 3 Oct. 1788.
[DCW A:104, AA:70]. Daniel Castle was from Roxbury, per
Amenia Ch. record.

- 329 –

Settlers of the Beekman Patent
Dutchess County, New York

Volume I
Historical Records

Settlers of the Beekman Patent
Dutchess County, New York

An Historical and Genealogical Study
of all the
18th Century Settlers in the Patent

by
Frank J.

Another researcher has pointed me toward Littleton Castle as a possible ancestor of my John Levi "Levie" Castle born in South Carolina circa 1800-1804 (est. birthdate from marriage date of 12 Aug 1824 in Wilcox County, Alabama to Charity Swain but certainly could have been earlier).

Does anyone have an information source about Littleton and any descendants? I know he does appear in Virginia, South Carolina and Mississippi where he died. He apparently had a son John, a son Eli, Julie, Nancy Elizabeth and was raising a grandson John Caldwell.

John Levi has been a brick wall for some time and I'm excited about the possibilty of actually linking him to
family.

Thank you so much for considering my request.

Kim Cassel Tardie

(Air Mission)

Rank and organization: Brigadier General. Assistant Commander, 4th Bomber Wing, U.S. Army Air Corps. Place and date: Germany, 24 December 1944. Entered service at: Mountain Lake, N.J. Born: 14 October 1908, Manila P.I. G.O. No. 22, 28 February 1947. Citation: He was air commander and leader of more than 2,000 heavy bombers in a strike against German airfields on 24 December 1944. En route to the target, the failure of 1 engine forced him to relinquish his place at the head of the formation. In order not to endanger friendly troops on the ground below, he refused to jettison his bombs to gain speed maneuverability. His lagging, unescorted aircraft became the target of numerous enemy fighters which ripped the left wing with cannon shells. set the oxygen system afire, and wounded 2 members of the crew. Repeated attacks started fires in 2 engines, leaving the Flying Fortress in imminent danger of exploding. Realizing the hopelessness of the situation, the bail-out order was given. Without regard for his personal safety he gallantly remained alone at the controls to afford all other crewmembers an opportunity to escape. Still another attack exploded gasoline tanks in the right wing, and the bomber plunged earthward. carrying Gen. Castle to his death. His intrepidity and willing sacrifice of his life to save members of the crew were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

Burial: Henri-Chapelle, Belgium

Born: 1908 MANILA, PHILLIPPINE ISLANDS

Died: 1944 Killed Action - Awarded Posthumously

Additional info and cemetery photo:
http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/abmc/castle_frederick...

*Feel free to pass this on to other appropriate resources.
I believe that I have traced my ancestors to William Castle and Sarah (Sally) Harris who were married in Whichford (Warwicks UK)in May 1848. The Marriage certificate shows William’s father as William Penzance (sic) and Sarah’s father as John Harris (Parish Clerk).

The younger William is shown on various Census returns as being born in Camden Wks or Camden Gls (presumably Chipping Camden).

I would be grateful if anyone has any information about either William Castle or William Penzance.
I am looking for info on my ancestor Francis Castle born about 1836 Petham, Kent, England, son of Francis Castle, who may have also been the son of a Francis Castle. They seem to have move fairly regularly around the Petham/Upper Hardres/Lower Hardres/Chilham/Patrixbourne/Lyminge area, and I would love to have contact from someone else reasearching this evasive family!
Carrie

James E Castle of Halling or Snodland, Kent, England

Searching for information and descendants of James E. Castle, listed on 1881 UK census as 13 years old, son of Thomas Castle, living in Snodland, Kent. 1881 census lists him as born in St Petersburg, Russia, but a British subject. I really suspect he is son of Thomas' brother John Edward Castle, my great grandfather, who was an engineer on steamboats in Russia before emigrating to the U.S. before1875.

Any clues about James will be greatly appreciated.

The Castles' of Scott Cty, Va. Morgan Cty, Ky.

Although I live in the Tulsa, Okla. area, I have done alot of on-site research and visiting to the above locations. I rarely see any mention of the Morgan county migration from Scott Cty. but can assure you there were huge families of Castles, Days, Salyers, and numerous other families residing around West Liberty who came from the Copper Creek area of Western Va.
I have copies of several land deeds in Scott and Russell counties showing locations and family members who were apportioned parts of the origional deed. What an experience it was to visit the area where the old Jacob Castle was supposedly buried on a hill near a plot of land still called Castle's meadow, uphill from Copper Creek.
