William Hopkins Castleberry, better known as William H., had a son named Oscar. William H. was the son of Timothy Castleberry and Agnes Henrietta Bacon, and grandson of Odian Castleberry of Forsyth Co., Ga. The Castleberry that lived in Rising Fawn, Dade Co., Ga. was Odian's son Mark and all of his children. I am not showing an Oscar for Mark's family but your Oscar was born and lived in that 20 year period where there is no US Census as it was destroyed in fire so the possibility of your Oscar being grandson of Mark could be. I would recommend you check out William Hopkins' Oscar, too, since he came from Odian's family also.
I will check and see what I can find also.

Julianna 20

Hi Friends and Potential relatives!

I am trying to sort out George Oscar and/or Oscar George Castleberry. I believe he (or one of them!) was born March 20, 1880, in Rising Fawn, Georgia. He had a number of children: Avo, May, Opal, Lois, Guthrie, Alma, and Crockett. I am Avo's granddaughter.

Does anyone have connection for him, his spouse Lucinda Thornton Castleberry (b. 1885), or any ancestral links to this thread? Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Just an update on Castleberry and Allied Families I and II: Jesse Castleberry, the author (with much contribution from Gene), is my father. My mother died two and a half years ago and my father moved from Windermere to Eustis, which is about an hour away. Unfortunately, he has dementia so we moved him near me, where he lives with a caregiver. I am now learning to be the family geneaolgist, and have the books for sale. There are only 8 of the first volume left, and I am preparing to have more printed.
My phone number is (352) 589-8102; my address is 37114 County Road 452, Grand Island, FL 32735.

Here's a transcription of obit of Jeremiah Castleberry from the Dublin Progress [Erath Co, TX], dated 11-12-1915, page 1

AGED MAN FOUND DEAD PASSED PEACEFULLY AWAY MONDAY NIGHT

Jeremiah Castleberry, eight-two years of age was found in bed at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Miller, shortly before sunup last Tuesday morning. He was feeling as well as usual the previous day but died sometime during Monday night of natural causes, due to his advanced years and early exposures.

Deceased was born in Guinet County, Ga Sept. 16, 1833 moving with his parents to Alabama at the age of six years. He was married Jan. 12, 1858 in Alabama to Martha Lewis and they removed to Texas in December, 1901, since which time Mrs. Castleberry died. Mr. Castleberry had been a consistent member of the Missionary Baptist church since 1849. He is survived by children as follows: Bouldin Castleberry, residing six miles from Stephenville. Mrs. Henry Miller of near Dublin, V.L. Castleberry and J.C. Castleberry of Greer county, Okla. and Mrs. A.J. Smith of near Dublin."

Note that the first son named here was Jeremiah Archie Bolen [J.A.B.] Castleberry and he went by Bolen. His name is misspelled here.

Also, death date on Jeremiah's tombstone is incorrect. He died Nov. 9, 1915, but his tombstone says he died Sep 11, 1915.

Well, we did find a few records for the Castleberry's including Wm [the father], Joseph, Lacy B, Enoch being charged with an "Affray" - a public brawl where witnesses are in fear of their lives. Jeremiah would have been 17 at that time so we figured he was there also but not charged due to his age.

Actually, the 2 most common surnames we found in criminal records was Parker [mostly Martin] and an Odiorn. Those 2 surnames were far more prominent than any other name.

Lewises were also there - mostly for gaming, playing cards, once for racing horses on a public road.

Logans were the sheriffs.

My line is kin to all of those names except the Odiorns.

Millers of northern Coosa weren't that common in the criminal records, but I've researched those Coosa Miller's ancestral lines and they have a history of drinking and getting into trouble as well - not all families but definitely some - all the way back to 1785 in SC.

Anyway, the Coosa Castleberry's definitely were strong-willed and didn't back down from confrontations.

How are you kin to Abel Lewis?

I also read somewhere that Jeremiah and his brothers were rowdy bunch and that whenever him and his brothers were in town, most of the town folks would keep their distance and that the Castleberry had a short temper to say the least.

Don't know if that is true or not but that is my understanding. Was that also something that was passed down from generation as well?

Both J.D. Parker and Abel Lewis would be my gggreat granddads.

I don't think there is anything in them about the Civil War activities in the second volume, as it is more concerned with earlier generations, but I also have the first volume I can check.
I am sorry to hear about his wife. I am looking to see if there was anything on Jeremiah M Castleberry as for things that may had been told that he may had after the civil war. I have been trying to track down as for what he suppose to have done when the civil war had ended. Especially where he was suppose to go and killed the officer who order him to go ahead when his brother James Vineyard was shot and wanted to go back and help him out.

Things you would hear from generation to generation.

Could you help me on this?

David

Hope you receive this as it has been awhile since your inquiry. Your Solomon who was married to Miriam Hogan was the son of Elijah B. and Rhoda Castleberry of Alabama. Solomon was the grandson of Solomon and Rebekah Lovett Castleberry, and the grt. grandson of Paul and Susanna Castleberry of Orange Co., N.C., and the gg grandson of William and Margaret Castleberry. I have researched this family up to John Castleberry, who died in Amarillo, Potter Co., Texas, 1958. According to my records, your family line is another branch of William and Margaret's. Jeremiah came from William and Margaret's son, John, and your Solomon came from their son, Paul.

Does that clarify Jeremiah's relationship to your family?

Julianna 20

Jeremiah Jerry M Castleberry 1833-1915 was my gg-grandfather and I know a fair amount about him. The Civil War story is mostly true, but see facts we have confirmed below. He did NOT shoot or kill the officer nor did he serve any time in prison* as far as I or my sister could find. We researched the county criminal records in Coosa, AL and we reviewed his Confederate Service records. Here's what we know about the story:

This is the family story as told by several sources:
Jeremiah and his brother Joseph fought together at Battle of Chickamauga GA. They were marching along in a line and Joseph got hit. Jeremiah stopped to render aid to his brother, but their officer told him to keep moving. After the war Jeremiah went back and shot the officer and had to serve 20 years in prison.

This is the story that Jeremiah shared with his family:
He and Joseph were marching along side by side and Joseph was shot. Jeremiah was not able to help Joseph because his officer commanded him to keep moving. Joseph died on the field. Jeremiah remained bitter and angry about this until his dying day because he felt Joseph might have lived if he had received immediate attention. This was the story relayed to me by Jeremiah's granddaughter Lela Miller Shoup. She and her family lived with Jeremiah and Martha from ~1901-1915 [when Jeremiah died]. This same story was relayed to our family by Myrtie Smith Ables, another granddaughter of Jeremiah's who also lived with Jeremiah from ~1903-1910 [Castleberry's, Millers and Smiths all lived in same household for a few years].

Confederate Service records confirm that both Jeremiah and Joseph enlisted together and served together in same units. Records confirm that Joseph died on the field during the Battle of Chickamauga on 9-21-1863. The same day Jeremiah was admitted to the hospital for "sickness" per his CSA records.

We found in 1871 Coosa County criminal records Case No. 549, Jeremiah was charged with "AWIK" / "AWIM" [Assault With Intent to Kill / Murder]. The case was tried in Fall Term 1872, Jeremiah pled guilty to A&B ["Assault & Battery"] and he was fined $5.00. Witnesses for the Prosecution were: "J.D. Parker, Gran? Hardy, S.C. Thomas, Dr. W.J. Peddy, T.S. McDonald, M.M. Thomas, Jno A. Sears". Witnesses for the Defense were: "Robt R King, Wm Rape, Charles Rape (in Shelby Co), James Hall, James Smith (the younger), Dr. Cameron, Sanders Jones (dismissed by Castleberry), Geo W Hatchett, A.G. Wilson". The minutes of the trial were lost in a courthouse fire.

It is known that Jeremiah was the Administrator for the estate of Abel Lewis, his father-in-law, which he began handling in 1870 after Abel's widow Elizabeth died, before Abel Lewis' probate was completed. Therefore it is possible that this case against Jeremiah pertained to arguments among his in-laws, etc regarding his handling of the probate of Abel Lewis. There are other criminal records for some of the Castleberry's in Coosa files, but this is the only case for AWIK. The Castleberry's were charged with A&B and/or an Affray [a public brawl] on 2 or 3 occasions between 1850 and 1900.

*Jeremiah was a POW during the CW at Elmira Prison in NY after he was captured at Petersburg in June 1864, released at end of war in Spring of 1865.

No evidence that Jeremiah shot and/or killed an officer but obviously he severely beat someone up and my assumption is that it was the first named witness for the prosecution, J.D. Parker [John Dial Parker, who was the brother of Jeremiah's bro-in-law Martin Parker.

Incidentally, Joseph Castleberry's widow, Priscilla DuPriest remarried to Columbus Lewis, brother of Martha Lewis Castleberry [i.e. she was first married to Jeremiah's brother, then she remarried to Martha's brother and thus remained a sister-in-law to Jeremiah and Martha Lewis Castleberry via both of her marriages.]

Since my grandmother lived with Jeremiah and Martha, we often heard about them. However, we never heard about him being a POW - we got that from his CSA records.

Hi,
I am interested in Jeremiah M Castleberry since he would be the brother-in-law to my ggg great aunt Elizabeth "Betsy" Parker Castleberry who was the wife of Lacy Castleberry. I have seen where there was something about him and his brother, Joseph Vineyard Castleberry who was walking on a road during the time of the Civil War and that his brother was hit and Jeremiah wanted to go back but an officer(his Captain most likely) told him to go on. It is said that after the Civil War, he went back and shot the officer.

I know there are more about Jeremiah but haven't been able to find where I can find the source. If you have heard of this and others, could you please let me know. I would appreciated very much.

You are showing Lewis David Castleberry as son of Henry but he is not according to the family bible records posted on "North Carolina Family Records Online". The Bible page is on there under family name of Castlebury. It shows Lewis as son of Franklin and Dicey Castleberry and grandson of David and Rosanna Harwood Castleberry.

Julianna 20

Sorry, I was interrupted and failed to list the rest of David and Rosanna's children. Britton, born 1817, Ruffin, born 1820 who married Mourning Howell in Wake Co., N.C., Berbin, born 1822 who married Sarah Morgan in 1841, and last is William Creath, born 1825, who married Rachel Pope in 1847. I have traced William Creath to Mississippi, Arkansas, and his son, William Franklin to Texas. I believe the birth dates for the children are taken from U.S. census and are estimated years.

Julianna 20

Thanks for answering. I would be happy to share my research with you. Henry was the son of David and Rosanna Harwood Castleberry. David, born 1778 in Orange Co.N.C. and died Aug. 1847. His will was made in May 1847. Rosanna was born about 1777 and died April l, 1860, in Orange Co., N.C. Their children were: Sarah (who married Gideon Canada in Wake Co., N.C. April 4, 1831) Nancy, born 1800 but not married in 1850, Joseph, born abt. 1805 but died before 1840 in Wake Co.,N.C. who married Sarah Alman on Oct. 2, 1827, Henry, born in 1810 in Orange Co., N.C., Martha, born in Orange Co. in 1811, Franklin, born 1812 and died Sept., 1846 who married Dicey Harwood in 1838, and John, born 1814 who married Catherine Fannett or Fennell. John shows up in the 1840 and 1850 census for Wake Co., N.C. and traced him to DeSoto Co., Miss. in 1860. You can follow him easily (since there are so many John Castleberrys)by his sister-in-law, Patience Fennel, who lived with them always and never married. The children who lived with others were Jane, Narcissa, Matilda, Mary A.P., Emily, Charles, and Henry Jr. I have had no luck matching these children up to anyone or even finding them after 1850. Back to David and Rosanna, the father and mother of David is Paul, son of William and Margaret, and his wife was Susannah (Sukey). Some of this information comes from "Castleberry and Allied Families" by Dr. Jesse Wendell. You would do well to buy this book as it has a lot of this branch of Castleberrys. If you are interested, I will send you the address where you can buy it.

Julianna 20

Yes! Thank you!
All the Henry's are one in the same. Doing a little research last night, I found the three marriages, and the twin brother.

Cintha must have died between 1848 and 1850, possibly due to childbirth if she had twins in 1848. Do you know who the Merrits are? Mary and Charles were listed as living with Candice Merrit and husband in 1850 census. Would that be a sister of Henry?

I would love any information you'd be willing to share.

Thanks!
Jessica

I have been working on this family for some time so will tell you what I have. There are either two Henrys in same location are he married a number of times. A Henry Castleberry, b. ca. 1810, son of David and Rosanna Harwood Castleberry, was married in 1830 to Patsy Harwood. Another Henry or same one married Cintha Pope in 1847. Another or same married Mary M. Utley in 1853. I have been working on David and Rosanna's children. They had a son named William Creath Castleberry, according to "Castleberry and Allied Families" book, Vol. II., who married Rachel Pope in 1847. If this Henry is one and same, he is son of David and Rosanna, grandson of Paul and Sukey Castleberry of Orange Co., N.C. and brother of William Creath Castleberry. There are some Castleberry children living in Wake Co., N.C.
with other families that I have tried to connect to Henry.
One is your Mary Pope Castleberry and her twin brother.

I have accumulated a lot more info on this branch of Castleberrys if you are interested.

Julianna 20

my mother says that my grandfather was 1/8th Cherokee but I don't know who it came from. I suspect it was a Hensley since the other side is irish Mcbride. Here's the line

Darius Bivins castleberry 1/8th cherokee

His parents were William Bruin Castleberry and Mary Fairanna "Molly" Mcbride.

William Bruin Castleberry's dad was John Robert Castleberry and his mother was Margaret Ann Morris. John robert's ancestors are unclear. Margaret Ann Morris is daughter of Isaac Cahal Morris Jr.

"Molly"'s parents are Wayne Abner mcbride and Nancy D. Hensley (I think the cherokee may have come through her.) i have more but it's a lot to write here. Does anyone know which of these families may have been cherokee? Thanks.

There is a good reason why you cannot locate him after the 1880 census if he died before 1900 census. Fire destroyed the 1890 census in Washington,D.C. but a few fragments. I did find his wife on Texas Death Index. She died Nov. 19, 1925 in Fannin Co., Texas, listed as Mrs. W. F. Castleberry. I am researching William Creath Castleberry, who I think is William F.'s father. Will keep you posted on what I find. Do you know the names of William F.'s children? That might help me.

Julianna

This is the grandson of Robert Lee Castleberry. Robert was the brother of my grandfather, Wesley Benjamin. This is Bob Castleberry's family in Denton. Robert was the only one of 12 children of Archibald H. Castleberry's children that lived out his life in Denton, Tex. The others moved to Wilbarger Co., Texas, where Archibald lived and died.

Where did your William F. die?

Julianna

Also, Richard Castleberry, being shown on public tree, is the son of Paul Castleberry of Spartanburg, S. C. where Richard was born. He was not born in North Carolina. Your William F. was born in North Carolina and I believe he is son of David, who is son of Paul and Susanna Castleberry, of Orange Co., North Carolina. If he is, I have a large portion of his family history.

Bob is a cousin of mine. The public family trees posted on Ancestry.com show a William Charles Castleberry married to Rachel Ragland. I don't believe this is your's. Both William Creath and Rachel Pope married in North Carolina where both were born. William F., son of William Creath C. had a sister named Lucy, and Mary W. with brothers being Howell T. and Charles F. according to the 1860 and 1870 US Census. Also, Rachel died about 1865 and William Creath married a lady by the name of Mary Williams, who had 1 son named Charlie and a daug. named Cornelias. In the 1880 Grant Co., Ark. US census, he is shown with his 2nd wife and they have a son named Willis W. In the Arkansas Donation and Swamp Land Sales book, William C. and William F. are listed as either donating land or selling land between 1855 and 1902. The last list on US Genweb Archives between 1893 and 1902, William F., James W., and M.H. are listed but no William C. He had probably passed away by then as he was born ca.1824. Hope this helps you get started. If I can be of further help let me know.

Thank you for the Castleberry information. I hope that it can lead to more connections to my great-grandfather. My family, in Denton, knew several of the Castleberry family members, including a Bob Castleberry.
JP

The Denton Co. Castleberrys are my branch and we have no William Franklin but please, check out a William C. Castleberry in Grant, Ark. in the 1870 US Census, who came from North Carolina. Chances are good that you will find you are from the Paul and Susannah Castleberry branch of North Carolina. David, son of Paul and Susannah, was born 1778 in N.C. and married Rosanna Harwood. They had a son named Franklin, born about 1812, who married Dicey Harwood in North Carolina but died at 34 yrs. of age. David also had son, Ruffin, who had a son named William. David had another son named William Creath Castleberry, born ca.1825, who married Rachel Pope in 1847. This is the one who is living in Grant, Ark. in 1870 US Census with a son named William F. I recommend you start there.

I am looking for information on the parents of William Franklin Castleberry, born about 1853 in North Carolina. He married Mary Nancy Caroline McRae Oct. 17, 1878, in Fannin County, Texas. He may have been related to Castleberry families living in Denton county, TX.
JP
