Robert Cate of White County TN was my gggg grandfather through his son William Cates who moved to Texas about 1850 and settled in Minter's Chapel near Dallas.I would really appreciate any information on the family. My information pretty much stops with Robert in Tennessee. From some information I have seen, it looks like he had more than one wife at a time in the 1860's and 70's. Any information about that?
Thanks,
John Shafer

I am confused about the question of two Mary Ann Randalls
married to Robert Cates. The first Robert Ezra Cate in my line
was the Son of Willam Abraham Cate & Margaret Agnes Ingles
of Devon England. This Robert Cate born in England married Mary Ann Randall Their son Robert born in Va/NC in 1700 married Elizabeth Wyatt. They also had a son born in 1727 whose name was Robert, I have no more information on this man. If any of my info is in error please let me know so that I may correct it

Daniel Rogers Cate, NH > CA > 11/24/1832 - 11/15/1900

DANIEL ROGERS CATE. - The first treasurer of Plumas county, was born at Northfield, Merrimack county, New Hampshire, November 24, 1832, and is the son of Simon and Lydia (Durgin) Cate, both natives of New Hampshire. When fifteen
years old his father died, and Daniel went to work the following year in a country store. At nineteen he went to Boston and clerked most of the time until October, 1849, when he came via Panama, to California, arriving at the port of San Francisco on the first of December. In a few days he went to Stockton, and had the misfortune to lose by fire, everything he possessed except the clothes he wore. He accepted the first job that offered, boating goods from Stockton to the French camp, receiving an ounce a day for his services.
The winter of 1850-51 he spent in Central America, and upon his return in the spring he went to Downieville. Here he engaged in all kinds of mining, from fluming the Yuba to
working a drift-claim on Durgan flat for one year; and then, with his partners, E. W. Judkins and Joseph S. Boynton, came to his present home in American valley. Soon after settlement, he with others built a saw-mill on Mill creek. Mr. Boynton retiring, Mr. Judkins and Mr. Cate afterwards built the Plumas flour and saw mills. The first store and blacksmith-shop in American valley were kept a
their ranch in the fall of 1852, by Judkins & Cate. In the spring of 1853 Mr.Cate began packing merchandise from Marysville to the store in American valley, and continued it until 1856, since which time he has devoted much of his
attention to his farm. While engaged in packing, he once became snow-blind, from which his eyes never fully recovered.
Mr. Cate was elected county treasurer of Plumas county in April, 1854. being the first to hold that position. He was married November 5, 1863, to Miss Hannah A. Loring, daughter of John H. and Ann B. (Trafter) Loring, a native of Somerset county, Maine, where she was born January 18, 1844. They have had five children, as follows: Alice Lydia, born November 26, 1864; Mary Louise, October 9, 1869; Henry Loring, May 21, 1871; Lafayette, June 29, 1875; Daniel Rogers, November 17, 1880.

Illustrated History of PLUMAS, LASSEN & SIERRA Counties
with CALIFORNIA from 1513 to 1850, Farriss & Smith , 1882, San Francisco

Cate Theory

I wouldn't be surprised if there are at least two different branches of Cate(s) in this country. Due to a lack of evidence beyond the oft-repeated "four Cate brothers" myth, I am inclined to think that there were at least a few different Cate individuals who came to America from the Old Country. In my mind, what is most important is finding out where James Cate came from, because he seems to be the main progenitor of our ilk in New England. Robert Ezra Cate from Colyton, England, may have kick-started the southern line.

Any thoughts?

I would be willing to donate $50 towards the DNA testing of the first male Cate who contacts me who can verify that they are a descendent of James Cate.

I recently had my DNA tested and I'm desperate to find someone to compare it to.

Preliminary results seem to indicate no recent connection to the southern (TN, KY) Cates.

I would at the very least like to confirm a connection to the Cate/Cates clan as found in the publication Sanborn's "The Cate-Cates family of New England"

http://www.archive.org/details/catecatesfamilyo02cate

To do that I need to find Cate/Cates males who have ties to James Cate who are willing to have thier DNA tested.

The Cates / Cate DNA Project y-dna results are here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Cates%20DNA/default.aspx

My kit was number 153040
We have been living at "Cate Place" in Deerfield NH for 11 years. Many Cate and Dowst family members in the grave yard. The house was built in 1742, adjacent is the Cate/Dowst forest donated to the town of Deerfield. There is a book that came with the house recording John Cate as a farmer and maker of pumps. The house is large and was surely a place for many generations to live together.

Robin

Re: Cate Joseph Clarification

Sorry, I need to clarify!

*****1. If a descendant of Joseph tested it would confirm Joseph’s paternal connection (or lack thereof) to my Cates clan or the southern Cates.*****

This is in reference to Jospeh Cates from Gorham, Maine.

One thing that did disappoint me about the article was the exclusion of Joseph Cates from Gorham at about the same time period. I thought that his name should have been at least mentioned having been the only other person in the area with the same surname. There are two contradictory beliefs as to where Joseph can from - England or descendants of the Cate clan in Portsmouth, NH. Both thoughts are from reliable sources - obviously only one is true. I lean towards the Joseph being from the Portsmouth clan.
Re: Cate Emigration

Hi Matthew,

This can get wordy so I’m going to try to sum up.

I can trace my ancestry back to Samuel Cates b. abt 1725 in Falmouth Maine? Or Portsmouth, NH? It’s strongly believed that he descended from James Cate from Portsmouth, NH. James - Edward – Joshua – Samuel

An outstanding article in the May’s issue of The Maine Genealogist makes a very good case making Joshua Samuel’s father and NOT Edward Jr.

So, like you Matthew my brain was working the theories – Cate brothers – Southern and Northern Cates – John Cate in CT ect………

I wanted to look into the possibility of having my DNA tested and compared with a known descendant of Sanborn's "The Cate/Cates of New England" – the publication that lists many of the descendants of James Cate b. abt. 1624 from the Portsmouth NH area.

I purchased a test kit at www.familytreedna.com and joined the CATES Project. The preliminary results have been surprising! There are two major sources of the Cates in North America - a New England clan and a Southern Clan (KY, TN area). The results of the tests are at this link:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Cates%20DNA/default.aspx...

Mine is towards the bottom - kit #153040. As far as I know all the other abt 40 "Cates" tested are from the southern clan. Stinker! There was a story of several Cate brothers who had come over in the 1600s and I was hoping to support that by DNA - also, I was hoping the DNA would confirm a relationship between the NE and Southern Cates. Regretfully, the preliminary DNA results do not support a recent (thousands of years)
relationship between the two clans.

So now I've been searching for the internet, meaagae boards, personal trees for Cate/Cates from New England to encourage them to have their DNA tested. This can be very frustrating because the only useful tests – for the purpose of the Cates family - are those taken from MALE CATES.

If you should happen to know any NE male Cates could you please encourage them to test. If they did have their DNA tested. that would do several things:
1. If a descendant of Joseph tested it would confirm Joseph’s paternal connection (or lack thereof) to my Cates clan or the southern Cates.
2. When a Cates/Cate tests from a descendant of that publication mentioned above - it could further verify the likelihood that Joseph came from the Portsmouth Cate Clan.
3. It would give us Cate/Cates in New England a better idea where James Cate may have come from and our ancient origins!

The tests are rather pricey! I haven't been very successful finding many male Cates from New England. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to e-mail me. It's been fun researching my Cate/Cates heritage!

Anyone with any questions can contact me directly: ancestry@eagleswind.com

William Cates Jr.
Nashua, New Hampshire

GGG Grandmother Quest (Cate/Cates/Barnes...)

To the Barnes, Cates, Kates, O’Berry, Reese, Reece, Sherod, Sherrod, Wilson, Booth, Prentice, Prentiss, Crumer, and Cromer Families:

I am turning to all families that may be connected to my current quest:

My 2nd Great Grandmother was Laura Cates Barnes. Her middle name may have been Kate. According to census records, she was born in Florida; death records provide her birth date as 26 Sep 1845; passed away on 1 Nov 1907, Kissimmee, Osceola, FL. They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Kissimmee, FL. Laura Cates married James Alpheus Barnes about 1865. James Alpheus Barnes was the son of Benjamin Barnes, who was son of Jesse Barnes...of South Carolina.

Laura Cates and James Alpheus Barnes had the following children:
1)	Elizabeth Waller Barnes, b: 1 Dec 1867, Lake City, Columbia County FL; married James Franklin O’Berry
2)	Benjamin Reese Barnes; b 26 Jul 1869; Lake City FL; died 1870
3)	Sherod (Sherrod) Alpheus Barnes; b 4 Nov 1870; died 1872
4)	George Theodore Barnes; b 24 Mar 1872; died 1917
5)	Rosa Jane Barnes; b 10 Mar 1874; died 1879
6)	Ola Verdelia Barnes; b 17 Jul 1876; died 15 May 1936 (married Daniel T. Wilson “Dede”)
7)	William C. Barnes; b 13 Oct 1879;

Tracing the ancestry of Laura Cates has become a nightmare. I have all the census records “after” her marriage to James Alpheus Barnes. I have followed up “family” leads, expanded my search to NC, GA, TN, AL and TX. In desperation I started studying the names of her children for clues, which has led me on a very interesting study of the following families: Sherod, Sherrod, Reece, and Reese.

I have stumbled upon the following information that seems to mean nothing, but could provide a breakthrough:
•	In 1842, a Mary Reece, born 1825 in TN married a Robert H. Sherrod, born 1816 in TN.
•	On July 2, 1882 in TX, a Mary Elizabeth Cates married Granville Sherrod (born 8 May 1859 in TN, son of John “Jack” Sherrod). Mary Elizabeth Cates was daughter of William D. Cates (b 5 Dec 1831, TN) and Martha M. Booth (b 15 Aug 1841).
•	In Maine, I discovered an Ola Cates...no further information.
•	In Alabama, 1849, a Malinda Cates purchased property Alabama.
•	In “The Ancestors & Descendents of Carroll Prentice” it is stated that Samuel Wesley Prentice, (son of William Prentice) born 20 January 1809 in Louisville, Jefferson Co. Kentucky; married Malinda Crumer Cates 1848.
•	The 1850 Marshall AL census shows a Malinda Prentice living with Cates children, including a Laura Cates age 4.
•	The 1860 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children including Laura Prentice age 14.
•	The 1870 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children and Laura Cates age 24.

I would very much appreciate any help in solving the mystery regarding my GGG grandmother Laura Cates O’Berry.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Barbara Bretthauer Marquez Froyland
bfroyland@comcast.net

Re: Cate Families of WI and NH

i have a Joseph B. Cate, b. New Hampshire (perhaps Carroll County) in abt 1818. Married Sarah S. Hayden (b. 1818) of Mass on March 27, 1839 in Boston. Later went to Blue Earth City (Faribault Co.), Minn., where he farmed and their daughter, Leanora F. was born in 1849 (only known child). Leanora married Josiah Goodhue Johnson sometime around 1860. All four, plus the Johnson's oldest child, Charles Henry, then went to San Francisco, where the two Cates and Josiah G. eventually died (dates unknown). Leanora died in 1920 in Alameda Co., Calif. If you have any information about the parents or siblings of Joseph B. Cate, I'd be delighted to have it. He is my 3xgreatgrandfather.

Re: Cate Family

Hello, I have a Cate from NH. Joseph B. Cate, b. abt. 1818, somewhere in NH, married Sarah Hayden of Mass. The two went to Minnesota (Blue Earth), where their daughter, Leonora (Leonore) F. Cate was born in 1849. Leanore (yes, there are three different spellings, depending on the record you're looking at) married Josiah Goodhue Johnson, b. 1930, in Carroll County, NH (Brookfield, probably). The two married somewhere before 1860. Note: in Josiah's land patnt application of 1857, Jos. Cate swore he'd known Josiah for 10 years, and since Josiah had lived there only since 1854, I think the two may have known each other in NH. Josiah, Leanora and her parents, Jos. and Sarah eventually (about 1866), went to San Francisco, where they all lived for many years. Josiah and Leonora are my 2xgreatgrandparents, which makes Jos. B. Cate my 3xgreatgrandfather. Any of these connections make any sense to you?

I'm looking for a Cate/Cates descendant from this man. I would especially be interested if you had any DNA testing done. Obviously you'd have to be a male Cate/Cates.
