George was thought to have had a second family with a Native American woman. Many historians believe he had a second family. I was told that I am related to George but a descendant through the Cherokee woman, not much is known especially since my great-grandparents Harold Catlin and Virginia [Fishburn] Catlin are deceased. I'm trying to track down the lineage.

I was informed that George is a relative of mine from his second family with a Cherokee woman. I don't know much about the lineage. My great grandmother (Virginia Fishburn) married Harold Catlin and they're both deceased. I'm not on good terms with my grandmother or her siblings (Linda, Eric, Danny and Sharon).

My Great Grandfather was Harold Catlin his wife Virginia Fishburn, my grandmother is Linda Catlin. From what I was told, George had a second family with a Cherokee woman which is how we're related to him. Does anyone have any information about his alleged second family? I'm attempting to put together a family tree which seems near impossible.

Hi,

I am wondering if Mary Mead Catlin had a son named Elisha? This is an old line of inquiry, and a random attempt at finding parentage of an Elisha Mead. The Meads had some interaction with the Catlin family, and I am chasing down alternative scenarios (I can't find anything in traditional routes). Yes, I do have a copy of Israel's will ... Elisha was born in Kingsbury, NY in 1798.

Thanks for responding.

Jennifer Kiernan

Hello! I am still around and am happy to share anything I have. I have copies of the letters and my transcriptions but its been a while since I filed them so give me a few days to locate them. And this would be a good time for me to scan the copies of the letters - something I've been meaning to do anyway. If you don't hear back from me by this coming Saturday please feel free to drop me an email. Sometimes I get distracted. :-)

My email is toepicks@gmail.com

Colleen

I realize you posted six years ago, but if you're still around, Amos Catlin is my second great grandfather and I'd love to read anything about him. I live on the East Coast and I know there are letters, but they have yet to be transferred online. Any chance you still have them?

I might also be able to offer you some things you don't have as I have been researching from many different angles for the past two years and have found some fascinating articles and information on the Catlins.

Thank You

Some time ago a Catlin/Glann researcher provided me with the Coe Smith Burial Cemetery, Wantage Township, Sussex Co., New Jersey as the place of burial of Jacobus. Is this what you have?

Jacobus and Ann Catlin Glann were my ggg grandparents.

You must have read The Unredeemed Captive by John Demos. This discusses the Deefield Massachesetts massacre of Feb 29,1704 in which some Catlins lost their lives.
Hello there in Bremerton!

My mother and I have always known him as "Dee" although, we never knew him personally. He married my gr-grandmother when both were in their 30's. He died in 1920's of encephalitis. He worked for the railroad.

My grandfather's birth certificate says "Dee Willis CATLIN" as the father, but I suppose "Dee" could have stood for anything. Do you have a lead for me to follow? I'll try almost anything to find out more about him.

Kim

It seems like your George could be Henry and Mary's youngest. I trust the compilation done by Spencer Reynolds, although he only lists 8 children and Roehm claims there were 9. He also lists a Putnam, but it should be Peter. Henry was born in 1819. Interesting that there were other Catlins out in California in 1850.
I'm not a member of Ancestry - how can I get to your Catlin tree?
Thanks,
Carole

Catlin, according to his Civil War enlistment, he was 25 years old on 5 Apr 1861.

If he had been born late in 1835, [Mary Barlett Grubb Catlin died in childbirth in Nov or Dec 1835] he WOULD have been 25, in Apr 1861.

As to Henry Catlin Jr, the Whaler, in the 1850 cansus [19 Apr] I found an H. Catlin, born abt 1822 in New York, in Tuolumne, Gerote No. 2, California, mining, next to a John Catlin, born abt 1809 in New York.

[Incidently, I have my Catlin tree at Ancestry.com.
Hi again,
I believe I found your George on the Rootsweb website. Have you contacted Raymond Maris, to see if he knew anything more?
Thanks for sharing that about Peter the Tailor. I found Henry the Whaler on Nantucket in 1840 - but never again. Also found Samuel out in California during the Gold Rush, with another Catlin of course, but he did return to New York where he was a farmer.
Because your George was born in 1837, he might have been the second wife's son. If he was Mary Grubb's last child, then you have a Mayflower connection because Mary's mother was a Gallup descended from John Howland. Tantalizing, isn't it?
Let me know if you ever find proof one way or the other, and good luck.
Carole
To the last question, I did a Worldconnect search, and the only two George Catlin's, of that age [born in New York] come up: MINE, and Henry's George.

Then when I discovered MY George was on his way to La Crosse, Wisconsin when he drowned in Jun 1873 ... I started seriously considering that connection. Would-be Uncles: Richard Catlin and Francis Catlin were still living in Wisconsin in 1873, as well as the second wife of Henry.

Roehm does seem have a bone to pick with "poor Henry." While Putnam indicated that Mary Grubb was mostly blind by Jan 1831... that would be a good enough reason for Henry to fall behind in his own work.

And I suspect the second wife was also of no help to Henry's situation. Eliza Dart: "Henry's wife calls herself 30 and lives by visiting, her girls do all her work for her."

...Incidently, I found Henry's son Peter G. Catlin, the Tailor, was in the Army in the War with Mexico. The record indicates he was born in Lockport in 1827, a Tailor, he enlisted in Buffalo, in May 1847, "deserted," but then served out his enlistment until it's expiration. He was in Army 4th Infantry, Co. H, a Private, and "At Pascagoula."

This information was in: "U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914," War With Mexico.

The Roehm book is indeed interesting, but she seems to dislike Henry intensely. I suspect she has chosen the letters from Henry in which he asks for money, just to prove what a deadbeat he is. She even sneers at him for having 9 children with his first wife, even though large families were the norm and Putnam & Polly had 14. Charles, the eldest, was an alcoholic whose wife divorced him at a time when divorce was not common, yet Roehm does not criticize him.
In any event, the two sons that I know went off to war were Frederick and Julius, born 1831 and 1833 respectively. They are not mentioned by name in the book, I only know about them from family papers. The only clue that might connect your George with Henry is the middle name of Bartlett. But Mary Bartlett Grubb Catlin died in 1833, several years before your George was born.
How did you come to link Henry with George to begin with?

Thanks Carole,

The book I ordered, arrived today, "The Letters of George Catlin and His Family," by Marjorie Catlin Roehm. I've been riveted!

Still nothing concrete, but poor ne'er-do-well Henry complains that neither of his sons who went off the fight in the [Civil] War have written to him, not once, and he knows not if they are living or dead.... dead, he supposes, since they haven't written...

But all of Henry "correspondence" involves asking for money, or explaining why he can not yet pay someone back!

Do you happen to mean Fred son of Francis? The indexed reference to the name Fred, don't have anything very enlightening.

-ee

-ee

I wish I could tell you how to prove that this George was your ancestor, but I can't even get my ancestor Frederick's birth record. NY wasn't big on recording births or deaths at that period.
The book I refer to was compiled by Spencer Reynolds and self-published in 1985. He had access to alot of correspondence among Catlin cousins in the late 19th century, and I find his records to be reasonably accurate. The book is apparently only available in Connecticut, at the state library, the Historical Society, and two other places in Middletown and Litchfield.
Good luck with your search!
