My mother was a Caton. Her father Alfred was born in Blackburn/Blackpool, growing up in Liverpool. He came from a large family and mentioned a brother in London. He was only 3 or 4 years younger. He said something about a brother who did some design work on the Titanic. My mother grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts. Thank You, Frank

H yes! you should pardon the expression. I have no money to do the DNA test, and in any event am female, and so the test wouldn't be worth much on the Y chromosome front.

Would love to have your test on file and some distant, very distant, male Caton from our group as well so that the tests could be compared to see if they share a common male ancestor or not. My Dad had no brothers, and neither did his father. So we have to go back to great grandfather and then down for male Catons. Nearest I can come is gg grand children of Christopher Pitman Caton, whom I never knew until I ran into them online.

I think a couple of the testing groups are having sales, and if you do swab the inside of your cheek and get results, please let me know. I'll be sure to encourage the folks I know to add their results to the pool.

Nancy Caton

cheers,
Nancy

He and Matilda
Hutzell were the parents of Nancy Caton who was ill but attended her Father's funeral on a very cold day. Nancy
died shortly thereafter. Adam Caton, Jr., was the son
of Matilda and Adam who was born after his Father's death.
Matilda married William Patton and he was the only Father
Adam ever knew. The Patton half-brothers always referred to him as Caton. Some people thought his name was Caton Patton. Adam, Jr.'s grand daughter gave me this oral hist.

Newlywed Prof. E.W. Caton feared lost in Mobile Bay, 1912, Mobile, Alabama

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper:

Monday, March 4, 1912
• "Grave anxiety is felt for the safety of Professor E.W. Caton, instructor in sciences at the Daphne Normal School, who is believed to have met with some mishap while attempting to cross the bay to Daphne Sunday in an 18-foot gasoline launch.

"Professor Caton, with a friend whose name is given as Griffith, left Mobile at 9 o'clock Sunday morning, and up to midnight had not reached Daphne and had not been heard from. At 9 o'clock last night Mrs. Caton, who had preceded her husband to Daphne on the bay steamer, called up Dr. John O. Rush ... and told him that she feared for her husband's safety. ...

"The first of the searching parties left the docks last night at 11:30 o'clock, and had not reported at an early hour this morning. ...

"Professor Caton was married about a week ago to a Miss Copeland of Birmingham, and had bought the launch for her. It was a new boat and had not been tried out thoroughly."

note- Daphne is in Baldwin County, Alabama across the bay from Mobile. Birmingham is in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Tuesday, March 5, 1912

• "While three searching parties in launches were exploring the moonlit bay in search of his body, and the entire town of Daphne observed an all-night wake on the eastern shore, replenishing bonfires to light his way home, Professor E.W. Caton, instructor at the Daphne Normal School, was sleeping peacefully at the Bienville Hotel Sunday night.

Not until he read a copy of The Register yesterday morning did Professor Caton realize what a comedy of errors had been caused by his inability to get telephone connection with Mrs. Caton at Daphne Sunday. Instead of crossing the bay Sunday morning ... Professor Caton and the friend who was to have accompanied him, abandoned the trip. ...

"Caton's regret exceeded only his amazement. He insisted on paying for the rent of the launches used by the rescue parties, and has thanked his friends heartily for their solicitude."

Not my line, just sharing.

Hello there, I have a great grandfather in the 1930 census. His name is ANderson Fountain CaYton. However, they mispelled his name as Caton. I think my aunt did some research into the surname Cayton and it seems that sh said to me that she had traced the lineage back to Englanbd, (how far I do not know), and that there is a loch over there across the pond named after us...Would you happen to know of anything at all that would help me in furthering my searc? If so, it would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Melissa Baker

Oh, my tree is public and is named Baker Family Tree

Sounds very familiar but it may be some family I 'ran into' upon searching for my own. I'm not at the computer that has my master database, but you can try looking at www.foorgenealogy.com/hallard/ and see what you can find there. That site is not updated much at all as I have two others that I update once a month that I avidly do research on. My email is foorgenealogy@yahoo.com

Responding to a very long ago message - do you know anything more about the Katons from PA other than what you have listed on the previous message? I'm looking for Thomas Katon who was supposedly born in PA around 1807. He doesn't appear anywhere until his 1836 marriage to Lydia Halterman in Scioto County, Ohio and then is in subsequent cenus information until his death in 1893. His marriage to Melissa Searl in 1848 is also recorded.

I don't know if this will be any help to you or not, as it relates to the Summers family. My John Caton married Elizabeth Moore, in Maryland, USA. One of their sons, Charles Caton, married Jemima Summers in 1755. In 1671, John Summers, grandfather of Jemima, arrived in Maryland from England, John was born abt 1650 and was the son of William Summers. There were 2 brothers, Benjamin and William, Benjamin being older than John, and William was younger. I believe it could be highly possible that the Caton family knew the Summers family in England, so maybe from the same area. Just a guess on my part, but I think it could be true.
I've not been able to find any substantiated evidence that my Caton family came from Pulloxhill. Another Caton researcher had told me of the possibility of our line of Caton's coming from that area. The earliest documented Caton ancestor I have is John Caton, born abt 1703 in Prince George's CO, Maryland. I do not know the parents of my John Caton, or when they arrived to Maryland. At the moment, Pulloxhill seems to be a dead end for me.
Julie Caton Spencer

I am a direct descendant of and looking for information on Penelope (Caton) Smith and Gilbert Smith. I have Gilbert's birthdate as abt.1782. Penelope is listed as the mother of his children that I have found (so far) but Gilbert was living with family since the 1850's, possibly before then, so Penelope was gone a bit early on.
I have both Penelope and Gilbert as being from Orange County, and then they moved to Romulus, Seneca, NY. Later a couple generations of the family relocated to Michigan. Eaton, Lenawee, and Schoolcraft counties to be exact.
I am looking for information on Penelope Caton's and/or Gilbert Smith's parents., For any dates/info about either person, or their parents that anyone may have, any info at all.

I did read a previous post, and found that Penelope's father was a John Caton, with my GGGGgrandfather listed as her husband. No wife for John was mentioned.

Thank You!!
Danielle

I have the newer copy by Keven McQueen which mentions a lot of relatives, including a Ann Harmon. Supposably Harmon's father was the director of the local mental hospital. I have been unable to find any record of the Harmon's and certainly not her father. I would have thought finding her father would be easy his position and publicity of indecent incidents.

The McQueen version includes a lot of personal opinions and what if preaching, unfortunately.

I also have a copy of the History of Union CO, Ky. The parts that relate to Moses Caton have already been copied into the system by someone else.

I know that there were quite a few uncles! I have Lethco, James, Moses, William, John, and Thomas. Thos I think is Thomas because the dates match and it is spelled differently at times. Moses Caton II is the father of the large clan. I have that he was 1811. There were also quite a few sisters. There are about eight different men by the name of Moses in this line so had to give them numbers.

Have you found out more about Ann Catherine Harmon's (Moses Caton II wife) relatives.

Just search for Moses Caton born 1851 he was hanged for murder so there is tons of information about him and his family.

Send me message with your email and I will give you the link my tree also. Since I am a Caton I researched this line a bit more and had a bit of family help checking facts.
