My father's parents came from Yorkshire, England area in the latter part of the 1800's. I think his father's name was John Catton. They settled on a farm in the Chatham, Ontario area. My father was born in 1894 and was the youngest of 13 or 14 kids.

Jill,
Sorry can't help that far back, still struggling with George & Charlotte. However I did notice that your 1967 enrties for the deaths of Albert Edward & Edward George have the same location. I can confirm that it was Albert that died in Bedfont not Edward.
You won't find any records attached to our tree as I just use ancestry to conduct searches.

regards

Bob

Catton with an unusual DNA signature

Catton Surname Message board
27-Feb-2010
Subject. An unusual DNA signature
An unusual haplogroup R1b1b DNA signature survives today in Wales and south England. If my research holds up, it is the genetic footprint of early Celtic Britons who were present before the Roman army entered the isles.
Today, the known ancestral locations for this DNA signature are in an arc from Norfolk, down through Hertfordshire and across south England into Wales. This distribution seems to reflect findings by geneticist Mike Weale’s 2002 Y-migration paper. http://mbe.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/19/7/1008/
Today, there are over 40 surnames on my list, one of which is Catton. This particular surname is very interesting because of its possible origins and it is under-represented on my list.
If you have taken a Y-DNA test while researching your Catton family paper trail; and your DNA allele results match any of the allele markers below, then please contact me about your earliest known ancestor birth location.
You should have:
Haplogroup
R1b1b or further
Allele marker results of
DYS448 = 17
DYS456 = 14
DYS450 = 10
Whenever the next book by Oppenheimer, Sikes or Johnson is written about the genetic history of the British Isles, this clade deserves to have their story told.
I have a Google map showing the clade arc at http://tinyurl.com/c5ekha
I have a Google Docs spreadsheet that lists most of the surnames in the clade. It is a little clunky but works fine once it completes loading. It in Modal One at
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=rkz0OgbJRpfGWHoN-iyfL...
So far, this is the largest genetic clade in south England today that can plausibly be linked to the early Celts. I would like to see more Catton surnames included.
Regards, Robert Hughes
just came across your info....my family crest is that of a white shield with black cross,a armor helmet,a dog on a beer barrel....meaning tavern or inn keeper....also it was once spelled Caton or Cattune....also spelled Cation...seems we might have the same person that did ancestry research and gave you a generic explanation of your namesake....not necessarily the correct kinship of your ancestors but the common name of English background or research of your ancestoril origin!

Hello,
Sarah was my g-g-g-grandmother. The obituary I have says she was born on January 01, 1860. She married Thomas Halstead then following his death she married a Samual Cotton. Her father was named John. She had 2 living sisters in England. Their names I am not sure of. She was a lifetime member of The Church of England. I have a photo from 1982 taken in Blackpool with the names Glady, Elsie and another name I can't read on the back. I know Elsie is a cousin. The other photo is of the Halstead family. I was told it was after they immigrated. However in this picture Sarah is elderly. Yes, if you are still interested I could send it to you.

Brandon, I have a note that "our" Sarah Catton was born 28, January, baptized 3, February, 1788, died 14, buried 16, January, 1790 Stockton on the Forest. As she died at age 7 there would be no husband.

On a side note, do you have a record of just when William Catton, born 1790, sailed for the US? I have found his wife Jane, and their offspring on a ship in 1836, but not him.
Ruth Catton

Hi Simmone,
I am not sure our Catton's connect. Although I have not researched very far back, I have a Thomas Catton B. Abt 1800 Eng and D. in Lincolnshire. He married Mary Clark (or Clarke). One of their children was Thomas (James?)Catton B. 31 Jan 1835 Lincolnshire D. 10 May 1911 Brimfield, Peoria Co., IL. Married Jane (Herd, Hurd, Butler?)8 Sept 1866 Lincolnshire, she died 27 Dec 1896 Brimfield, Peoria Co., IL. Their daughter, Ada Ann, was my great grandmother. She married Andrew Whittaker 19 Feb 1890.
I am delighted to see so many people researching Catton families. Linda

Hi, my family also come from Huddersfield Yorkshire although I was born in South Africa. I have done a bit of research dating back to my GGG Grandfather Nicolas Catton. I have plenty of family names stemming from him around 1823 onwards. I personally think we Catton's from Huddersfield are all linked, it is just finding the link which somehow takes forever! I will send you a list of names of my discoveries if you want let me know what you have and your thoughts. I did find one contact who sadley does not find meeting or discussing family history of any importance. This is something we all have to be prepared for. I find geneology fascinating! and will continue to research.

Regards

Simone

What Cattons, where in Yorkshire? I am a descendant of William and Jane (Snowball) Catton of Lowthorpe, Yorkshire. They emigrated to USA, ending in Constantine, Michigan. I have found when Jane and their "children" (some were young adults then) came and on what ship, but have not found when and how William came. Would appreciate any help on his emigration.
Ruth Catton
Benzonia, Michigan

Hi fellow Cattons.

I am descended from William Catton born circa 1798 in Hopton Suffolk, then to his son James Catton born circa 1825 in Pakenham Suffolk (James had 3 brothers and 3 sisters), then to his daughter Alice Ann Catton born May 1861 in Thetford Norfolk (my great-grandmother) who married my ggf Robert Frost.

Any connections ?

Wow, too amazing! I just started researching my Catton tree. First, I find out my g-g-g-grandfather was R. R. Whale! Then, I find this thread about decoys! Now I know why my uncle, Dave Catton, is such a talented artist... He also carved prize winning duck decoys, along with many other carvings. Carole, my g-g-grandfather was Matilda's brother, Alfred. I would love to talk. I have some old photos of George Hill Catton.

Steve

According to the censuses, there's only one Thomas Catton born in Bury around this time. There are others born in other counties, but if you're sure he was a Bury man, it's likely it's the same one as Trudie's.

Best wishes

Charles

Thanks for the reply.

Thomas lived in Leeds when he married in 1927. I was told that when they divorced he "returned" to the south of England.

The only trace I have of John Catton is the wedding certificate & that he was a farmer & deceased by 1927 when Thomas was 40 (probably a rounded estimate as his wife is shown as 30). That would probably make John's birth date around 1860. I think it may be this John as he is shown as an agricultural labourer on the 1901 census at 120 Eastgate Street age 45 with a son called Thomas age 11. That John Catton passed away 1908.

Richard

Possibly came from Canada to Michigan to Indiana.

I think I might be descended from this line.

My grandfather was Thomas Catton who married Gladys Poole 03/08/1927. The certificate shows Thomas was 40, therefore born around 1887. He was a domestic gardener & his father was called John Catton (deceased by 1927, I think 1908), who was a farmer. I think he may be related to the Cattons in Bury St Edmunds that you were referring to but am not 100% sure. It depends if I have got the right John Catton.

Can anybody confirm please?
