My opinion is that the right family name was Chiavàro instead of "Chiavarro". (look where falls the accent)

This is one of the biggest family in Paglieta and I don't know any Chiavarro.

For Nicola, starting from your approximative birth date, I think that he was husband of Anna Maria Di Nelli.
He was father of:
1870 Lorenzo
1877 Lenora

His parents were Lorenzo Chiavaro (1815) and Anna Antonia Di Genni (18??)
His brother were Pietrangelo (1842) father of Giovanni (1870)

The "surname" to this branch of Chiavaro Family name was "Nutare". One possible meaning can be "Notary".
Maybe in this family there was an ancestor with this profession.

These infos are taken from one of my books.
The years are approximation of 1 year, but all the events are to verify. I cannot warrant nothing.

My Grandfather was Tomaso Cavallo. I believe his brother was Rosario and I know my mother had a cousin Ross who emigrated later than others. My grandmother spoke of Policastro in Calabria and I know that she and he were from Calabria. I had an Uncle Salvatore (Sam) and Uncle Rosario (Ross) so all the names fit as relatives. My mother was Carmela (Cora). My Grandmother was Elisabetta (Elizabeth Rizzo. Many relatives from North Jersey and New York. I think Rizzo side in New York and Cavallos in New Jersey.
I did ot have the sense when younger to keep in touch.
If you are part of family my name would be recognized as cousin Cokie.

That makes sense. My maternal grandfather was Salvatore. I have uncles with the names Salvatore, Luigi and Antonio, so it seems plausible. I guess that would make your wife my cousin. Thanks for the info!

My father inlaw is Frank Cavallo his father was Luigi (who had a brother named Salvatore he left for the states) and his father Antonio (one brother named Francesco?)

The Italian name for Nancy is Nunziata. My grandfather's sister is named Nunziata Cavallo. My grandfather's name is Michele (Michael) he is still living in Italy and was born in 1925. Traditionally, children were named after their grandparents or great-grandparents in Italy so Ill be interested if my grandfather's sister is somehow linked to your grandmother. Her father's named was Angelomario Cavallo. She is still living in a town Salerno, Naples Italy. We are aware that some of my grandfather's siblings are living in America and Canada but unsure of their names.

I am trying to find the siblings of my grandmother Anne Cavallo (Nancy) She married Stephano Mennuti. I believe she had family here too. Can you post more info like DOB and the village they are from? My Grandmother was born about 1896.
I found her after 10 years, she was traveling with 2 siblings, and her mother. This was a big find for me.

My grandmother, Caterina Cavallo married Vito Nicolo LaNeve . Both from Alberobello. They came to the US around 1908. They lived in Utica, Barnesboro PA, and eventually settled in Syracuse NY.
There was a cousin. Pietro Gigante in Alberobello, whose mother was a Vito LaNeve's sister.

I want to post a BIG thank you for the help you have emailed me. You have found my mothers side of the family, Cavallo, Mennuti, all the way back to my Great Great grand Mother and Great Great Grand father, along with Nancys (Anne) Cavallos 2 siblings.
You found my Grand Fathers brother, Onofrio Mennuti, who went to CA with the rail road being built. I also see his family, traveling from Italy to CA to be with him. My cousins.

I know my Grandmother Nancy Cavallo Mennuti had a cousin with your first name. I remember her very well. Her mom, Aunt Millie (Mildred) married Carl Ianuzzie, (sp?) were my God parents. They lived in Brooklyn all their lives and I have lost touch.

Hi Nancy, I lived in my town Auletta until the age of 19. I am 34 now and I have been living here in Brooklyn since then. My parents and my two younger brother still live there and, as a matter of fact, they have told me that just last summer, a woman from New York, whose last name is also Cavallo, went there with an older uncle to find their old relatives or ancestors. So, I can ask my parents for more accurate information, or even better, communicate with this person in New York, since she left her phone Number with my mom.

Welcome to the Message Board. My Grandmother, Nancy Cavallo, brother Anthony (or Anotnio) Cavallo, may have been from your area. I am having trouble locating her siblings, mother father, etc. I know of only her Brother and he came here to USA, they lived near each other here in NY.

I found most of my info and the best starting point, for me were the census' that were gradually added to this site. When they were first added, Ancestry.com allowed free use, of these documents for quite a while. If you have an idea of where they lived, the counties, this is a good starting point. With those docs I was able to view my grand parents, their children, including my father, their dates of birth, if and where they worked.

All members of the household are listed. You can access this info on this site now if you are a member. Maybe you can join or try the free trial period, but do it at a time when you know you can spend the time online.
Once you start, you will find yourself researching for hours. You might be able to save yourself a trip, unless your planning to be in that area anyway,

These docs are public info, and are available to you on Ancesrty.com, or through the county centers in which they resided. A FOIL form, (Freedom of Information act form) may be required.
My grandfather Stefano Mennuti married Nancy Cavallo. Both were born during the 1890's.
The ships manifest at Ellis Island.org, from that tine frame were hand written and later put into text form.

The point is, often they traveled with other family members, which is usually noted on the handwritten ships manifest. Also, the address of where they intent to be living or point of destination is listed on many of the lists. You might find your relative traveling or going to a brother or cousin. The name and/address is listed giving you another new search.

I'm sorry I don't know the names of any of his italian relatives. I believe he had a brother or cousin that settled in Philadelphia. I'm not entirely sure I have his name correct. I have several trips planned to try to find his original name, I know he was naturalized in Washington, D.C., probably between 1903 and 1907. If I learn anything, I will let you know.

Over the last decade this site upgraded many times. Documents added, some info, partial family trees lost.
I see only one post from you, here. Over the decade I noticed people didn't use the Message boards as much as now. Maybe you will have better luck if you make a post add as much info as possible, approximate DOB and DOD, villages as you have mentioned, create a family tree and subscribe to the message boards that interest you.

The family free cross references the names and dates of find the people your looking for. It will tell you any matches in docs, or other family trees.
The site has become quite advanced since even 2004, when this last post was added by you.

If your grandfather changed his name, was he a Cavallo? And did your family change it back? Your using the last name which is why I ask.

If you can post his DOB and DOD approximate. It will really help get you answers.

Also, I suggest, if you have not already, create a family tree. When you enter the info, you may find a match as you hit save. The little green leaf icon will show on his name meaning there are matching records on this site either on another member family tree, or within the site, military, wedding, death, birth, arrival to the USA, Ellis Island, etc.
That's how I found my Grandfather after searching for 10 years I found I was using the American name for Antonino, Anthony. I found his Ellis island info and believe he is on other family trees.

People use all tools here, these boards can get your answers and the family trees offer the most matches, taking you to unknown relatives and legal docs.
My Grandmother, Nancy Cavallo, married Stephan Mennuti,both born late 1890's. I am at a stone wall for her info but maybe your added info can help me and others.

I'm about 90% sure this is the real name of my paternal grandfather. He changed his name to James McKeaver sometime between 1903 and 1907. I believe he was born in 1884 in Paglieta, Abruzzo, Italy. I think he came here in 1903.

I am looking for anything that will confirm this.

I believe he had relatives in Philadelphia. He settled in the Washington, DC area.

Hi I am a Convertino born in NY,NY my grandfather was Domenico(Dominick) Convertino b.1885 d.1962 from Locorotondo, Bari Italy. He had 9 childern My understanding is grandpa had 8 brothers and 2 sisters. I know his brother Donato came to America in 1911 at age 26 married had 6 children. They went to Utica NY. My grndmother was Nancy Cavallo. Married to Stefano Mennuti, married in the USA.Does anyone know what name would have been used in Italy for the name Nancy? I noticed many American records, use American names, ie: Antonino vs Anthony of all records once arrivd in the US.

MY Grandmother was Nancy Cavallo, married to Stephano Mennuti. I am not able to find them in the passenger lists. I was able after 10 yrs to locate another grandparent from info I found, filled out by my father on a life insuance policy. back then, 1960, he had to list all his siblings, parents, dates of birth and if living or not.

Looking for any information on my wife's maternal grandmother. her name was Antoinette Cavallo she was born Feb. 23,1887 in Salerno Province. Her parents were Frank Cavallo and Madalina Di Iorio. She had a brother Pasquale Cavallo, she and Pasquale immigrated to the US in the early 1900's. The only records I can find is her 1914 marriage license, no immigration, no census. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I visited Dipignano in 2004. I was in Italy with my husband visiting his relatives near Naples and we took a little road trip to Calabria to try to find my maternal grandfather's relatives. We ran into the postman straight away when we first arrived and he took us around to the homes of people who's last name was Cavallo. I met some cousins that I did not know I had. It was wonderful...although I must admit that I have not done a very good job of staying in touch with them. Mostly because of the language barrier. My grandmother's name was Antoinette Osso. She was born in the U.S. and I do not know much about her family or where they were from.

Maryann if you need informations of Dipignano, the best place to look for is the web site www.valdesi di Dipignano. I,m from Dipignano, my maiden last name is Ammirato. I know Cavallo is a very popular name in the village, Dipignano is small in the early 1960 were only four thousand and five hundred people. Actually many of them are in Canada, I hope this helps. Your town or commune isn't in my area of research. But here are some tips:

go to http://infobel.com and search Italy, when you get to that, search white pages and when you get to that page, put in your cavallo and town name. There might be a few listed. If you know Italian you can always call - you might get a cousin. If you get a person, ask if they have a Muncipio or town hall and are Civil records kept there. If the town has a Muncipio, ask if there is an address and contact person. If you get this information you can write the Muncipio. I would request records for your Pasqualina Cavallo with as much information as you have. Church records are nice to have but they are typically understaffed and difficult to retrieve. Civil records are the best because they have so much more information. For instance it will have Pasqualina's parents and siblings to the date of her birth.

If the Civil records are not there you would need to know if they are in the City of Salerno.

When you are need to translate = Go to http://google.com and use their "language Tools" it will translate anything from English to Italian or Italina to English.. I would do a proposed letter in short sentences, one at a time.

My grandmother was Pasqalina Cavallo, born in Piaggine in 1896. She came to America in 1920. She had a brother Giovanni who came too.
