Hello, we are researching my husband's family from the area in and around Kircudbrightshire Scotland, Buittle etc

Cavan/Caven/Cavin origin

I have gone through all the Peerage and Baronage books I can find. There are five which are considered the most accurate. They list five different origins of the name. Kingship of O'Caubauin, (Ireland); Kingship of Keevan, (Ireland); from Kavanuagh, (Ireland); Northern France, meaning "the cave dweller;" and as a Sept of Clan Douglass from Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.
I found the earlist listings for land grants to Cavan's in Kirkcudbright. The oldest being eighty acres given to a Archibald Cavan in the 1480's.
I am trying to find a Franciscan Monk, living in the state New York, who's last name is Cavin. He claims that several Cavin's went to France in the 1220's, with about 300 other Scotsman, as an aliegence between the Kings, against England. I know the Scotish king did send about 350 warriors to France in 1221, (I think that's the correct year).
There are alot of Cavan/Caven/Cavin in Southeast Ireland. This area is very close to Southwest Scotland, Kirkcudbrightshire.
I do know the name has nothing to do with Co. Cavan, Ireland. My Father and I went there 4 years ago. Dating back to 1820, no one by the name of Cavan has ever lived/ died/married there. The word Cavan is the anglosized version of a gaelic word meaning "the hollow." The township was established in a very round valley, or hollow.
If anyone knows the "real" origin of the name, let us all know.

Seeking any information on families of Daniel Cavan (or Cavin) and his wife Catherine Gallacher/Gallagher, who married on 16th July 1880, Old Kikpatrick, Dumbartonshire.
I have found Daniels' parents and siblings on censuses, his father was Hugh Cavan, born c.1831, Linwood, Renfrew, and Hugh's parents were both born in Ireland.

Would also like to trace families of Daniel and Catherine's children: Mary, born 1882; Catherine, born 1885; Daniel, born 1887; Isabella (Bella) born 1889; Agnes, born 1891; John, born 1895; Thomas, born 1896; Sarah, born 1898; Annie, born 1902.

Nathaniel CAVAN married Margaret AFFLECK in Scotland. Nathaniel was born about 1741 and died 16 January 1824. His wife was born about 1747 and died 11 days after her husband. They are buried in Kirkgunzeon Church Yard, Kirkcudbright, Scotland.

All their children were born in the parish of Kirkgunzeon:

My gg grandfather John MCDOWELL b. c. 1788, in County Cavan. His son Charles MCDOWELL, my g grandfather was born c.1823.

The emigrated to Ontario, Canada probably in early to middle 1800s. There was also a John MCDOWELL Jr.

my paternal grandmother was a patterson and her mother and family lived in Raffony. My Gt grandmothers name was lucy patterson. She had sons called James and Johgn who emigrated to England and then the USA about 1800. They were also related to the Plunketts. Any information gratefully received.

I'm looking for information about Thomas Henry Cavan born Aug. 20, 1862 in Scotland. He married Edith Flickenger and they lived in Wilkes Barre, PA. Thomas' parents were Patrick Cavan and Cllan Morrison who were both born in Ireland. Thomas & Edith's children were: Margaret, Ellen, Mary. Thomas, Helen (Honor), Katherine, James, Eugene, Joseph, Arabelle, Phillip, Edith & William. Any information on any of the family would be appreciated.

Hi:

I am trying to locate the marriage information on a Denis Maguire and Mary Carolan (Carlin, Carlan). They both would have been born about 1850. They had two children in Cavan County (Hugh in 1874) and (Elizabeth in 1872) both in Bailieboro. They may have had two additional earlier children in County Donegal a John in 1867 and Bridget in 1871. Any information would be appreciated. Denis, Mary, and their two children Hugh and Elizabeth came to Brooklyn, NY between 1874 and 1880 as they show up in the 1880 census.

Phillp Cavan was my mom's uncle who was found guilty of murder in the early 1930's and sentenced to life imprisonment in Eastern State Pennitentary. He was later released because...well as the story is told, someone else committed the crime..Any info you have regarding this story would be of interest to me.
