Re: Looking for info on a Leaford Cavin

I have the family pictures[100`s of old pictures from the 1890s through maybe 1960]/scrapbooks/some letters/cards etc. Some dating from the late 1800s through 1990 when Genevieve Cavin died. They are from the Leaford Hoyt and Genevieve Cavin family of the Topeka, Kansas area. Leaford died in 1974 of a massive heart attack. The collection even has an old poster advertising Leford H. Cavin "Evangelist". I`m looking for a family member of this Cavin family interested in having these Cavin family records. I rescued them from an auction here in Concordia, Mo.
Am Looking for information on William Riley Cavin Junior and his wife America (Native American)
William Riley was born in Louisiana and America was born on the reservation in Arkansas according to the info I have. I've been hearing about America in the Cavin family but was surprised to find it in my children's fathers line on his mothers line. His father's mother said that they have Cavin's in that line also. This is getting confused.

I'm trying to learn more about the James Wesley Cavin who came to Oklahoma Territory after the Land Run of 1891 and was one of the first land patent holders on record.

I have a family group sheet from a Cavin researcher so I have that type data. Now I'd like to find a descendant or family member who could tell me something about his life... any stories... that sort of thing.

I know he lived in southern Cleveland County, Oklahoma in an area named BOX. He was married to Purlina Angeline Pressley (b. 1856, d. 1935) -- she is buried in the Box Cemetery.

If you can help me with this project, I'd be most grateful.
AHA! That's them. Are you from this family? The reason I ask is ....

This particular family lived in the Box, O.T. area before statehood -- they, and a whole lot of others were first settlers to this area and were part of the history of that little community. I have tax census and tax records showing their name as living there.

Currently I'm working on a book to preserve the history of this little community. I've found several -- but not all -- the families, hence my post here to try and glean enough information to make them part of my book. I'm hoping to find descendants who can share stories and photos.

If you can help me with this endeavor I'd be most grateful... you can contact me directly at mazie@coxok.com. Thanks so much for responding and I look forward to getting acquainted with you.
I only met my Aunt Bernice once, but I do know she was the daughter of Mable Miller and Henderson W. Cavin. (Not sure about the W., but Henderson usally went by Henry or Hank). She had three older brothers, Miller, Lyle, and Glenn; and one younger sister, Maxine, my mother. They were born in South Dakota. Bernice was living with Miller in Atlantic, Iowa while in High School. During the war she was in California and that is where my mother lost track of her. They got together again about 1990 and visited back and forth a few times. Bernice moved to Waterloo, Iowa to be close to Glenn and his family. She died there a few years back - our cousin Robert took care of her. We never new where any of her family was and I was always confused about her history. It just seemed she had a very sad life.
I have a lot of family history if you are interested. We have traced the Millers and Olivers from Ireland and the Cavins from Misouri.

My records show Bernice born in 1918, married to Donald Anderson and a Daughter Joan Anderson.

Thank you so much DonnaMilano for your input. I am new to genealogy and have been teaching myself. I guess I just wanted someone with experience to give me a second opinion, to tell me I'm not making something out of nothing. Heck maybe I ended up in South Dakota to find her. My journey is now gonna head to Brookings, SD, a short drive from my home.
Thanks again for your input
Tracy McCormick

It seems like it would be too much of a coincidence for there to be 2 Bernices with parents named Henry and Mabel, who also have a connection to the surname Oliver.

Believe it or not, there are MANY "errors" (some intentional, some not!) on records. People's ages often varied by several years (again, sometimes intentionally). Bernice may have told your mother's father that she was younger than she really was, which would account for the discrepancy on your mother's birth record.

Also, since Bernice was raised by her grandmother after her mother's death, she may have gotten confused regarding the maiden name.

There are two trees on Ancestry for Henry Cavin. You may want to contact them to see if they can further confirm the info for you. In my opinion, though, it seems like your Bernice is the daughter of Henry Cavin and Mabel Miller.

My mom was born 1956 in San Diego, CA
I have no idea what my Bernice's fathers name was, the only thing I know is her name.

As far as South Dakota being a possibility, well I guess anything is possible. Here is something kind of freaky. I was born and raised in San Diego, Ca 3 years ago we moved to...SIOUX FALLS, SD!

Her first married surname was King

On the death record for her son are the names:
James Hamilton King
Bernice E. Cavin

Thanks so much

Ages often vary on censuses so you can't always use those to rule out someone. You say Bernice E Cavin was 32 on your mother's birth certificate--what year was that? And where was your mother born? What is your Bernice's father's name?

Is South Dakota a possibly area for your family?

If Bernice was married prior to marrying your mother's father, the name she gave on your mother's birth record could be her first married name and not necessarily her maiden name. Do you know her first married surname? What names are on the death record of her son?

Rookie needs HELP!!!

Can someone tell me if they feel I am on the right path? The only info I had on my grandmother was a name and age on my mom's Birth certificate: Bernice E Cavin age 32. I knew Bernice had been married once before and had 2 previous children. 1 had died when he was 13. I pulled a marriage cert. and a death cert (son) and I am confused. Marriage cert says she was born in South Dakota, fathers name was Henry Cavin and mothers was Mabel Oliver. The only person who kind of matched was Bernice Cavin born 1919 in South Dakota to Henry W Cavin and Mabel Miller. Obviously the age doesn't match. after a little digging I realized Mabel's mothers name was Annie Oliver and she raised Bernice. Which could make sense on why Mabels maiden name was listed as Oliver instead of Miller. Back to my question. Am I totally reaching for the stars trying to link this Bernice to my Bernice or am I on the right path? If so how can I prove she is the one?
Any help would be much appreciated
Tracy

I'll look for America Cavin's headstone, however most of them are very worn and difficult to make out. I will post any information I gather.

Margaret Cavin's testimony is there, as is William's brother's. Margaret specifically states that she was William's NEIGHBOR in Amherst and Hawkins Co., nothing about being his sister.
