I have also wondered about John Cuit. He is the only one in the early days to have a french middle name. I also wondered if John is the english version of Jean, and it became John as Henri became Henry. Alloa had some difficulty finding additional documentation regarding John Cuit and indicated that some segments of the Cabanis/Caviness clan took issue with including him in the family history because two women in his lineage (sp) were unmarried and had mulatto babies with paternity undisclosed. I am fascinated by the lack of info on John Cuit and Sally Solomon, particularly when there is much more on John Cuit's alleged siblings. Contact me.

Henry (Marie)
1 Henry ?Jane Allen
A.Henry (Elleanor)
B.Matthew (Ann)
C.William (Lucy Camp)
D.Thomas
E.Richard
F.Amos
G.Fredrick (?Elizabeth )

Richard and unknown wife
A.William (Mary Vestal)
B. Mary (Polly) (Thornborough ???
C. John (Jemima)
D .Joab (Elizabeth Mann )
E .Lacretia (Jesse Bradley)
F.daughter
G.Patchy
H.Becky

William Caviness
Mary Vestal
1.John Caviness (Susannah Poe)
2.Susannah Caviness
3.Alfred
4.William Vestal
5.Sarah Chamness Caviness
6.David
7.Jesse

The later generations are very well documented, and need not be needed repeated here .Looking for any persons I do not have .Appreciate help with any of the blanks .This family all seem to have lived in either Va.just north of the NC state line and south of the line in Granville Co.NC.Matthews property in the late 1700's was actually looked like it was in both states.Mostly Granville Co.NC.There seems to be a lot of Caveners and Cavenah,in Halifax and Edgecomb,I do not think these are related,to many of them that do not fit in this tree ,and the spellings are consistenly with a dull "er" or "ah" at the end.I see no evidence of Henry Caviness ever having been in NC.
Fannie Caviness Cheek was the mother of my grandfather Wilmer Cheek. He lived in Pleasant Hill/Seagrove North Carolina. His Grandmother or great grandmother was a Wincy A. Caviness born 1819-1900. I have a photo of her. She has her hair pulled back and a fan type hair comb in the top of her head. My mother and grandmother know more about Fannie than I do. Fannie died when my mother was a little girl. Of course Fannie was my grandmothers mother-in-law. My grandmother is still living. She is in her late 80's. It is a very interesting family tree.I also have a picture of a General Harrison Caviness born 1842-1899. Feel free to e mail me.

Re: Caviness Perry Relationship NC and AR

Thank you for the response.
I had decided that Eleanor (or Ellen) was probably Silas' mother and that she had remarried to Wm Caviness. (I saw 1850 as the year of that marriage somewhere.) I see that you had come to the same conclusion back in July. (http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dotsic...) And your info there has also explained the 18 year old Martha Myrick in the household in 1850. She was probably Ellen's sister.
My concern now is with Peter F. Perry's will. The 2 transcriptions I've seen agree that the name of the 3rd son is written as Persullas. I strongly suspect what it is my GGGrandfather Sylvanus Perry. I would love to see a photocopy of the original so I could look at the handwritting since I don't think I'll be getting to NC anytime soon. Hopefully some one will eventually put a copy on line somewhere and I'll find it.
RE info shown at (http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dotsic...), my grandfather's name was Lon Sylvanus not Sylvanus Lewis. and his wife's maiden was House. She was the daughter of Benjamin F. House (1852-1927 and Lydia (Liddie) Saphonia Sublett (1854-1890).
Thank you for all the great info you have dug up on the Perrys.
Russ

My great grandmother was Fanny Caviness. Her mother was Wincy Caviness. I have been trying to complete the lineage between the Caviness and the Cherokee in North Carolina. I have a picture of Wincy Caviness, who looks Native American, but I have not been able to make the connection using the Cherokee Roll of names. Do you have any information on your father's Cherokee Family or their names? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Caviness Perry Relationship NC and AR

To my knowledge I am not related to the Caviness line but my GGrandfather Sylvanus William or William Sylvanus (Silas) Perry (10 Jul 1846 - 18 May 1925) (married Mary Elizabeth McNeil (b. Oct, 1846 in Tenn. d. 27 Jun 1924) on 30 Jan 1867) was living with a Wm Caviness (age 31) and Ellen (age 40) and their son Charles A (age 9) in Center Township, Prairie County, Arkansas (page 131 & 132 1860 census). Sylvanus was 14 at the time. I believe the same family was living in Upper Regiment, Chatham County, NC in the 1850 census but the handwritting shown on that census (page 66) has been transcribed as Cromp. ( I think it is actually Cavness.) The household members are shown as William (age 21) and Eleanor (age 26) and Sylvanus Perry (age 4) and a Martha Myrick (age 18). All the family trees I've seen show GGrandpa Silas as the son of William Sylvanus Perry (1813 -12 Dec 1846.) and there is a Sylvan Perry (14 Jan 1813 - 25 Dec 1846) burried at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Orange County. I don't know who GGrandpa Silas's mother was.
Sylvan Perry, (GGGrandpa) is said to be the son of Peter F Perry and Rosannah Baker but Peter's will does not mention a son named Sylvan or Sylvanus. It does mention a William (middle name not shown) who is appointed his executor.
The question I have is what was the relationship to the Caviness family? Does anyone here have in knowledge of this houshold?
Any information would be appreciated.

They sure didn't pass on any family information to me. I didn't even know my immediate family. As I was growing up, the people who I thought was just friends turned out to be family when I began to search for family information. Especially my paternal side of the family. The ones that I did know, all I knew was their nick names, like my father's dad. All I ever knew was Mitt Smith. It wasn't until I got interested in genealogy that I found out that his full name was Milton James Smith. Glad to hear that you made contact with Ken.
Willie

I find it so hard to believe that so many people have not passed on information on their families. My mom's sister who is still living, knows very little of her family's past. So,I am very excited to find anything out, even the bad.I have had a lot of people contact me on Caviness.I knew years ago that there was a Caviness book, but haven't found one. mom had visited with a man named Brookshire and he told her about it.Hope all is well with you. I will try to pass on any other tid-bits.Ken was such a great help. take care.
Sue M.

He beat her everyday is what Aunt Ethel told her daugthers Sybil told me. Since she died so quickly I'm sure that is what killed her. caviness was known to be a very mean man. He used a bullwhip on his children. Elbert Caviness,my father, told me that, and Aunt Ida verified it. And,likewise, we experienced abuse.I just met Kenneth MCDonald last weekend for first time.I can't understand why Josephine stayed with him. They lived right there, why didn't someone do something.I have been trying to find information on caviness, but hit a dry spell,so to say. sincerely, sue m.

Sorry that I haven't been in contact before now but I have a recovering great grand-daughter from MRSA. I guess my folks in Goliad could have known your folks. My ggg grandfather was mayor of Goliad in the 1850's. His name was Alexander Boatright. I had a cousin who lived there but has since moved to the coast. Other family surnames of that area are Gilbert, Harding and Tuton. My Hulet connection is my gg grandmother, Mary Ellen Hulet, daughter of Flora Matilda. Mary married Louis Smith in Corpus Christi 1856. Percy, sister of Mary, married McConnell/McDonald.

Thank you Sue. I'm also related to Ken McDonald. That is quite a story on your family. Now I can add a little more to my family tree, thanks to you, and now I will add to my tree.
My name is Willie B. Smith Jr. and I live in Longmont, Colorado since moving to this state in 1969 from Texas. I have done research since about 1984 when I first discovered genealogy. Now that I'm retired, I only do research on the computer. Nice to meet you on ancestry.com.

Willie

Hello,I am Carolyn Sue Caviness Mathews, the daughter of Elbert Henry Caviness. He was born at Goliad,Texas October 15,1909 to Alexander Ross Caviness and my grandmother Josephine Mcdonald Caviness. My mother overheard Aunt ethel c. Weatherman and aunt Ida Lee Snyder discussing their mother's death. They were talking about how their father kicked her in the abdomen and she died a few days later. I am in contact with my Aunt Ethel's remaining child,Sybil Pope of Sand Springs,Texas who verifies this fact. She,also, tells me that her mother revealed to her that he beat her viciously everyday. When Granmother was pregnant with their first child,Uncle Tom, he threw a possum through the front door onto her lap. I asked why didn't she go back to her family who lived there and were cultured people. It probably was the old"you made your bed ,now lie in it." We recently visited Longview,Texas to look up any history on that Caviness branch. I had been told by someone when I first moved here,Boy,hope your not from those down by Alpine, they sure are a mean bunch." Family traits die hard. My sister Geneva Palmieri, her mother was a Weatherman, mine was not,had often spoke of him as being known as the meanest man in town. She said that he was very kind toward her mother Wanda Ruth Weatherman Caviness Scownes. She was his caretaker at the end of his life.My father was mean, just not as mean. I am informing you of a little family history, because,if i don't,it will die. I work on whichever tree I find the most information on. I have been in contact on the computer with a cousin,Kenneth Mcdonald, from Grandmother Caviness family and some others. I feel the severe mean streak was only in the Caviness side. Sybil has never said she died after childbirth.May I send your e-mail to her daughter Robbie? I am not sure if she does any research,Sybil sometimes seems surprised by things I find. If Grandmother had died after having Aunt Ida,I know Ida would have shouted that fact from every rooftop she could. She never said that.I will keep looking. We plan to go down again to Goliad to do research, maybe(jokingly) did up some old bones Thank-you so very much for making my day,I always enjoy the search, but contact with others who have family knowledge to share means a lot. sincerely,Sue M.

I know little about my line, seeing as how my father ditched out on us when I was little, his name was also Richard Caviness, and I know that his people all came from MI.

I could not help but reading through some of these post.

Would you be talking about Albert Caviness who married
Sarah Mosier? Albert his parents are said to be:
Benjamin Caviness and Mary "Polly" Fox. Albert had a son
named James "Jim" R Caviness he married Lucinda McGuire
she is the daughter of Rachel Tabitha Moore and John Calvin
McGuire. James and Lucinda had a son Named: Everett Green
Caviness he married Mary Elizabeth "Eliza" Yakley they had
my Grandmother-Opal Caviness she married:Arthur Willam Belding
had my father: "Edwin".

Albert is said to be of Cherokee Decent it is said
he was from NC. I have mixed information that some people
state he was from Chatham NC and other say Greene NC.
However his Parents lived in Greene Co,MO

Benjamin and Mary Fox(divorced there)

I do have information on the Caviness Lines/death certificate information. In Camden Co,MO is the Caviness
Cem. Where Albert and his wife are buried.
You yourself can look at death certificates on Line for
MO. Go to Missouri Digital Records on line: Type in Caviness You will find missing info regarding the Caviness families: When you look-write down the names of
wives, informant ect-that way you can look at other death
certificates and know who fits in where. If you would like
further info fill free to email me.
Looks like were more than likley cousions.
