Re: Cawthorne Family of South Yorkshire, England

Hiya, my biological grt.grandad was James Cawthorne who was a Hardware Dealer at 223 Main Road, Darnall, Sheffield, Yorkshire. He had a 'fling' with my grt.gran Elizabeth Hall nee Hurst/Hirst and she had a son by him, Alfred. On 1911 census he is living at 223 Main Road, Darnall and Elizabeth is living at 23 Irving Street, Darnall, Sheffield (they were practically neighbours)with her children whilst her estranged husband is living with a family called Haynes at 8 Irving Street, Darnall. Although my grandad, Alfred 'Hall', was the biological son of James Cawthorne on Alfred's birth certificate it says James Henry Hall as the father. We know that was not the case. The Hall/Hurst/Hirst families also had relatives at Treeton and worked at the various Pits in the area. Elizabeth and James Henry were married at Handsworth Church which is near to Treeton plus James Henry Hall's mum lived at Treeton with a William Beech and may have been William's common-law wife!! during the 2nd World War my grandparents Alfred and Norah Hall owned a fruit and veg shop ( probably James Cawthorne's shop inherited, by Alfred, from his biological father) this shop was sold in the 1960's to Mr Lakin and became Lakin's Music Box. Hope this is of interest to you. We know nothing, apart from the above, about our biological grt. grandad and it has taken me ten years to get this far. Any info much appreciated. Regards Gabby

I'm interested in your connection to Polk Co. NC. My Cawthorne family was also in southwestern NC, in the Mecklenburg Co. area which isn't all that far from Polk County, but a couple of generations later if your ancestor there was born in 1700. I am looking for parents of Nancy Catherine Cawthorne, who was probably born in the 1780s or early 1790s. She married John Thompson, and their oldest documented child was born in 1809.

Do you have details of your Charles Cawthorne's migration path from England to Polk County? Did he come via Essex Co. VA? and did he have descendants who stayed in NC rather than moving to Mississippi?

I'm trying to research my paternal grandmother's side of my family:Clary/Cothran.
My Grandmother and The best friend I ever had was:
Margaret Louise Clary b.Aug 1919 d.1986 m. Roy Phillips
Her sis Jeanette Clary b. 1917 d 1970's m Albert Cothran
3 brothers Robert, Charles, and Lloyd (Uncle Lloyd is the only 1 still with us)
Their parents were Junie Clyde Clary b.1897 and Carrie Cothran b. 1898
Carrie's parents were Thomas Cothran and Margaret Frances ?
This is were I get stuck. I can't find any info on Margaret after Thomas dies and she remarries. She doesnt seems to exist before or after her marriages. My ancestors are from Inman & Beech Springs in Spartanburg County South Carolina and many of my family still live there today. Jeanette and Albert had 13 children (all in Spartanburg. I grew up with most of Jeanettes grandchildren.
hello Alice May. i stumbled across your post and I am also a decendant of John William and Alice May Cawthorne, they were my paternal grandparents. They had 9 children, Harry, George, Frank, Roy, John (Jack), Eric, Mary, Dora and Irene. Of those 9 there is Roy, Dora and John (Jack) who are still living. John being my father. It would be nice to know who you are a decendant from as you if John and Alice are your great grandparents then you are the next generation down from myself. It would be nice to hear from you. One of the other people on this thread is my elder sister Pat.

I too come from the Yorkshire Cawthornes. I'm not sure if we are connected but I'd be happy to share with you what I've learned of my line. We came from Whiston, Yorkshire, England. I've traced my line back to Robert Cawthorne (1597 - ?) who was born in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England. Rotherham is just down the road from Whiston. I'd be more than willnig to communicate with you. I can be reached by email at ms.anisah.david at gmail.com (I'm writing my email this way so as to prevent the electronic harvesting by spamming bots). Feel free to communicate if you are from the Yorkshire, England Cawthornes.

My line trackes through to Robert in this fashion:

My paternal grandmother: Lillie Mae Machen...
...daughter of Joseph Bellamy Machen (1881- 1919 of Utah) & Rose Scholottie Lyman
...son of Joseph Machen (1839- 1909) & Sarah Bellamy (both of Whiston, England)
...son of George Machin (1802 - 1862 of Whiston) & Elizabeth Hunter
...son of Thomas Machin & Elizabeth Cawthorne (1756 - 1843 of Whiston)
...daughter of Richard Cawthorne (1726 - 1779 Whiston)
& Elizabeth Crooks
... son of Richard Cawthorne (17 Dec 1702 of Yorkshire, England)& Martha Thompson
...son of Richard Cawthorne (1680 of Whiston)& Martha Scorah
...son of Robert Cawthorne (1637 of Whiston)& ????
...son of Robert Cawthorne (b. 1597 in England)& ???

son of

Hi Noeleen, just a quickie but how did you get the info. re William and particularly the reference to John born c1790 and Elizabeth and Robert being the brother and sister of John?

My interest is because when John died in 1847, his wife Elizabeth married the following year a widower named James Barwood. The witnesses at the wedding were Daniel Cawthorne and his wife Susanne. Daniel was the son of a Robert and Harriet Cawthorne, Robert being born at nearby Pentney.

If they were witnesses due to being family connections, Daniel would be the nephew of the late John and by marriage, Elizabeth.

I have often suspected a family connection and you may have confirmed this.

Best Regards,

Nigel

JAMES CAWTHORNE was my biological great grandad. He was a shopkeeper at 223 Main Road, Darnall, Sheffield on the 1901 and 1911 Directories. My grandfather, Alfred Hall, was the result of a liason with Elizabeth Hall nee Hirst. On Alfred's birth cert., it says is father was James Henry Hall THIS IS NOT CORRECT. James Cawthorne's shop was later called 'Lakins Music Box' in the early 1960's. I believe that Elizabeth left James Henry Hall and that James Henry Hall married/ lived with Elizabeth's sister, Mary Ann Hirst???

Any info much apreciated.

Family Name

I joined the Cawthorne Family Site several years back and at that time thought my research would soon lead to England and that spelling of my family name of Cothern. Now my book of Cothern Clan is up to 1,000 pages with the indexes and I have the following spelling of the names of our line:
Cothern (731 people), Cauthon (703), Cawthon (424), Cauthron (115), Cothran (87), Cothren (56), Cawthorn (44), Casthron (29) and Cothen, Cotheran, Cothon (2 each) and Cathon, Cathron, Caughthorn, Cauthan, Cauthorne, Cawthren, Cothorn, Cothram (1 each). So obviously Cawthorne IS NOT a good choice name for the site that I am in. It would be wonderful if all people with the various spellings of the name could be in ONE site so that information could be shared more readily. Any thought? Jean Rodwick
