Hi, I saw your Ancestry entry and I hope you can help me. Do you know or are you related to the following. Please advise if you are.
My Mother entered the USA in 1921 with her Sister, which I believe was her Cousin, because my Mother never mentioned that she had a Sister.
Her name was: MANUELA SOLIS DE SOTO, she lived in El Paso and died in Hidalgo,TX, in 1978. She was born in 1909 in El Fuerte,Sin, her husband was: LEOPOLDO SOTO. My Mother was: MARIA ALVARADO OR MARIA GALVAN, born March 16,1904, in Los Mochis,Sin,Mx. Do you know these people if you do please send me a message. Thanks

I would like to make a suggestion, I believe the best way for your friend to make some connection with his family is to take a DNA test, have him reach FamilyTree DNA and purchase a kit, they will process his DNA and if there are any hits, they will advise him. If he decides to take it I would suggest that he take the advanced DNA test that hits on COUSINS as well as other family members. good luck.
I am trying to help a friend find our where he was born and to whom. He was born in September 1945 to a young girl. After his birth he was immediately spirited away to California, so far we have not found records of a legal adoption.

He did not know that the his parents were not his birth parents until the late 1960's right before he was shipped to Vietnam. He had a difficult time in Vietnam and has only recently found himself. His 'adoptive parents died in the 1990's and early 2000's. After several years of struggle he is now making an attempt to find out more about his birth family.

We think that the birth took place in Glendale, Arizona though his adoptive mother told him that he was born in a hospital in Phoenix. We have made several inquiries but cannot find records to indicate a hospital birth, we suspect that he was actually born at home and never registered with the county.

His adoptive mother's maiden name was Celaya, the family home was on what was called 8th Street in Glendale, AZ in the 1940's. Several of the siblings lived very close to that house in the 40's and beyond. The adoptive mother's oldest brother was named Carlos Cruz Celaya, we THINK that my friend was the son of one of the younger sisters in this family or perhaps an older daughter of one of the older siblings of this family. We do not know her name but think that it was Perez, nickname Guerra (not sure of how that is spelled).

One of his cousins said that this young mother was his baby sitter when he was very young. He too left Arizona at a very young age and has not returned to AZ since the 1960's, so he does not remember much, except that she was very pretty and had a boyfriend who was several years older. After the birth of my friend, the young mother went on to have several more children, he does not know their last name or first names, he thinks that their descendents might still be in the Glendale, AZ area.

Does this story sound anything like a story that might be part of your family history??

b

When growing up in Ajo, Az. I ran around with Reuben Celaya from Sonoyta. His father and mother had a small ranch south on the road to Caborca. Many times I spent time at the ranch at San Emiterio. Also Rueben had a sister by the name of Margarita Ortega from Pitaquito which was his twin they both looked a like. She married pilot from Europe and Rueben passed away two yrs. ago. He also had a brother in San Manuel, Az. who was older. Sorry I cannot furnish more info.
I know this book, but it is not for Sale. It is a personal book, I think a research project for a class. She donated a copy to the Hayden library of Arizona State University. Its a reference book, and can't be borrowed.

I can't find the author either. The best you can do is go to Hayden Library and ask to make copies of various pages. Next time you are in Tempe, Arizona that is.
Hi – Since they say all of us Celayas are most likely related, thought I’d throw our names into the mix, as well as what little I know about our history.

My father was Armand Celaya (born in the1920s) and I believe he had at least three brothers, one of which was named “Bill” or William. My grandparents died before I was born (late 50s) and they were in Sonora, I think.

I have one full blood brother and seven half brothers and sisters, one of which is Armand Jr. and another is quite a bit younger – his name is Juan. They are in Phoenix-which is where my father lived most of his life. He was born in Florence, Arizona. I believe some of our line also lives near Reno, Nevada.

The last name Rubio is significant, as well as the first name “Carmen”. (I was very nearly named Carmen, in fact!)

Our line came from Spain and originated in the Basque Country. Anyone doing research can check the Basque Genealogy and may have some luck there. The French/Spanish connection may have something to do with the multitude of light-skinned Celayas.

Oddly, there were a lot of Celayas in Spain, then it seemed like a large number of them left at once-many ending up in or around Sonora.

I suspect we are also related to the Celayas involved with Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or ETA group, although I’m not certain of exact connections.
I found your post to myfamily.com from 2001 via internet search for my great-great grandfather, Jose Jesus Zelaya, who was married to Maria Refugio Ortega. I was surprised and excited to find your post. Since it is so old, I do not know if this message will get to you.

I too am looking for info about them. I have a Baptismal Certificate for their son, my great-grandfather Jose de Jesus Matias Zelaya, who was baptized at Mission San Gabriel in California on 28 Feb 1855, born on 24 Feb. Also, my info from the Caborca cemetary tombstones for them is that Jose Jesus senior was born 15 Sept 1826 in Altar, and died October 29, 1897; Ma. Refugio was born 10 Oct 1833 in Altar and died 3 May 1916. I assume both died in Caborca. I have no info at all about their parents and learned from your posts all I now know.

Jose Jesus junior was father to my paternal grandmother, Carmen Celaya (yes, she spelled it with a C), who married my grandfather, Jesus Maria Ochoa in Caborca in 1901. In our branch of the family, we have long wondered in particular when Jose Jesus and Maria Refugio emigrated to California, and also when they returned to Mexico. From your post, you may know more about this since you state they spent much time in California. I am looking forward to sharing info about our ancestors.

Victor Ochoa
Oakland California

Hello,

I just found your information, and was curious about your Celaya connection. My wife is a Celaya from Sonora, Mexico. I have tracked the Celayas from various cities in Sonora, through Arizona (and a couple places in Texas) to California. In fact, part of my father-in-law's cousins went to the LA area.

Any information that you can send me would be appreciated. I am looking for any information specifically of the Celayas that came from Spain to Mexico.

Thanks.

Kevin Kolb
