From my talks to my grandfather, his part of the Celestinos originated in San Luis Potosi.
He was born in San Luis Potosi, close to the limits with Zacatecas. They migrated to San Antonio in the early 1900's, only one of the brothers stayed in San Antonio (in recent decades, more Celestinos from San Luis Potosi migrated to the Dallas area). He started a large family that spread to several places in TX. As for my grandfather's descendants from Coahuila, we have moved to California, Texas, Georgia, Nebraska. I work as professor at one of the major universities in the US.
My grandfather's grandfather arrived to San Luis Potosi from somewhere else.

Message to Samuel Celestino Muñiz
I'm from Spain, and I was shocked when I read your surnames where Celestino + Muñiz. Celestino is not a common surname here, in the North of Spain, where I live, but Muñiz is strongly orinial from Asturias, an area in the North of Spain. All my brothers and sisters, and I, we have Celestino Muñiz as first/second surname.
We still don't know where Celestino comes from, but we do know that Muñiz comes from this part of Spain I told you.

Un saludo,
Virginia

It's early Christian in origin, meaning mostly Italian, but migrated as a surname to Portugal and Spain. Eventually it made its way to North and South America. That side of my family is from Nuevo Larado, but I was born in Chicago, where I presently reside. I spent a great part of my life in the state of Texas. I have never run into anyone else, personally or professionally with the last name, but have seen the name used from time to time as a first name.

That's funny - I was always under the impression of the opposite of what Celeste has said. Celestino as a surname is Italian in origin. Celestino as a first name is a hispanic convention. If you search Celestino on this site, you'll see a bunch of people with Celestino first names in their ancestry and many of them are spanish-speaking.

Hi Samuel!
It was very exciting when i saw that there was a reply to my post on this boards. I'm really into this last name history and stuff so i'm always looking for new information and its very interesting to know that there's Celestinos in Mexico. Unfortunately there's not much info about our last name available. Not fot free anyway. What i can tell you is that about two years ago i met a french lady in another board like this one and she told me that in her city and in the cities around, the Celestinos have come from a generations and generations and she believed that the first one had come from Spain.
I really think that makes sense, since my granfather's grandmother has come from Spain and shes the one who brought the name Celestino to my family. She was a very important woman here... her story is quite interesting, she was very rich and her husband lost a lot of her money gambling so she dumped him wich was quite unusual those days. Her name was Angelica Celestino.
Ok i'm gonna stop babbling now. If you feel like talking more about this or sharing some more info, please feel free to e-mail me.
Bye now,
Livia Maria Celestino.

Suddenly my family lives in the state of San Luis Potosí.
If you know something about the family name, send me please the information. Thanks a lot.

Atte.
