Thank you. I find it ironic there being (two) Mahala Chaffin's, only because it is an unusual name. I named my youngest daughter Mahala also, after my grandma (who had a twin, Mary.) We called mine, Grandma Haley and I do know my Uncles's granddaughter was named Haley. I really like the name. We may be of the same descent and would like to see if we can track that down somehow. I haven't worked on my history for awhile but need to get back to it, as I am getting up in years, but so far in good health. Thanks again, Greta

Caldwell Chaffin Bedford Co Va shoemaker 1865

I came across a Chaffin name that I havent seen before. His name appears to be CALDWELL Chaffin and there is a log record of business he did for Paschal Nance in Bedford Co. Va in 1850-60s. He was apparently a shoemaker as there were numerous charges/payments for repairing, resoling, and making new shoes. The name appears in the Library of Virginia digital database of Chancery causes. You may search that database by entering the names "Archibald Nance" vs the heirs of Pascal Nance. I didnt write down the case number, but it has 161 pages and you will find the bill on page 30. There was C.C. Chaffin on the bill, but his named spelled out on the court record as Caldwell C. Chaffin. I think I have read the name right, but wonder if it could be Callohill?? Doesn't look like it. Wasnt there another Chafin who became a shoemaker after CW due to war injuries? This person was working before the war as a shoemaker and maybe trained the younger person? Just some ideas...

Dear PUBLIC MEMBER:

I am the great niece of Cecil. She was my grandfathers only sibling. Her mother was Anna Belle aka: Anna Alauren Britton-Clark. Anna married John Walter Clarke. They only had Cecilia Gertrude Clark b. 1898 and John Bernadine Clark b. 1906. I would like to ask to get a copy of the 4 page letter written by Mrs. Lynch and sent to Aunt Cecil after Anna Belle Britton-Clark had died in 1910. I never knew it existed. Cecil died in 1950. Bernadine died in 1965. His wife Evelyn died in 1998. Bernadine and Evelyn had 6 children. Jack died in 1992, Loralli died in 2004 and Larry died in 2007. My father, uncle Lynwood and uncle Lowell are the remaining direct descendants still living. Now Cecilia only has 2 living children left. I do not have their mailing address. Please advise if you can help.
Melinda

Chaffin my lost gg-gmother? PA/OH, 1800

My gg-gmother "Elizabeth ?" married Zachariah Brown of Brownsville PA in about 1790-95. A son, Aaron, was born in 1797. Zack died in 1804 and in 1805 Elizabeth and Aaron and possibly Aarons sister joined friends moving to Hamilton Co, OH. Aaron married (1820) Rachel Spurrier and they named their first son William SPURRIER Brown, and their second son Robert CHAFFIN Brown. This inspired me to fish in the Chaffin pond as a possible surname for Elizabeth. If this rings a bell with any of you Chaffins please reply.

CRJ

This Amos Chaffin was heavily engaged in North Alabama from at least the middle of the war.

Is this the same Amos Chaffin, Jr. who took up housekeeping with Lucinda M. Derrick Davis?

ATTENTION CHAFFIN FAMILY MEMBERS

Hi. My name is Katrina & I am searching for the family members of Nora Ann Chaffin
Spouse: Jessie E Newsom

Children:
1. William James
2. Luther Wyatt
3. Sim Honder?
4. Bethel Lee
5. John Preston
6. James Jay
7. Roy Daniel
8. Rachel Lee
9. Lyda Dora
10. Ruby Jewell (went by Judy)

Judy (Ruby Jewell) was my adopted grandma. She illegally adopted my mother, Judith Ann Bruner, on July 08, 1946 when my mom was born in Santa Anna, CA. My moms birth mom & Judy went to the same dr's office in california & Judy was wanting children but was unfertile, I believe & my Grandma Alice was pregnant with my mom & seeking for adoption but didn't have the money. Thier doctor told my grandma Alice that when she gave birth to my mom, to check into the hospital as Judy Bruner (Judy's last name @ the time). Judy Bruner is the listed birth mother for my mom on her birth certificate because of this. My mom was born to Alice Eckhart. So she did, & when it was time to leave the hospital Judy went into the nursery & picked up my mom & my grandma Alice went home. They all re-connected later in life & it was a happy reunion but that's another story.
Anyways-
My mom passed away this last January & in our family genealogy records was an envelope that reads
"Tombstone & Data & other Records.
Newsom Family Tree
Births & Deaths
Please keep
in Newsom
family.
I would like for these records to get to whom they are intended for (Family of Jessie & Nora Newsom) & I will hold onto these until someone contacts me.
Reply here @ the thread or email me @
lilxmissxone@aol.com

I have 2 daughters that live here as well.Anyway just thought that was cool. I would love to have any info that you are willing to share and I did notice the different spellings of Chaffin/Chafin. Maybe you will tell me why sometime. Mom had told me that we had kinfolks in Texas. I know she would be so pleased to have known about us touching base..Again,thank you,Lou Ellen Cann

Well you got me in first gear and I scanned almost everything this morning. At least that which is in Uncle Dewey's handwriting. There are more pages handwritten but I do not recognize the handwritting. If you prefer I can attach to an email as I am not sure exactly how to attach with Ancestry.com (too new to it). We also visited Uncle Dewey, but most of the time he came here. Here being Wichita Falls at the time. I was raised by my grandparents Dewey was my grandfathers uncle, they were only 6 years apart in age.

While distant yes we would be cousins.

Just FYI we spelled Chafin with only one "F". That is another story in itself.

My email address is kcw2k5@hotmail.com

Thanks for the quick response.

Kathy

Thank you so much for the information! Dewey Chaffin (Uncle Dewey) was my great uncle who I remember with great fondness.Mom and Dad used to take us to visit them when I was young. I had called my Aunt Lessie who is my grandpa Minks sister a few years ago to see what she knew, but she could not recall what would have been her g grandparents names. Anyway she did tell me that her grandmother Lucrecia was native american but nothing more except that she was tall and dark..I would be so grateful for any info that you have if you are willing to share. I have been working on this for about 8 years. I wish I had gotten interested before so many of the elders passed on. My mom died almost a year ago and i tried so hard to trace her family but promised not to give up.. Again Thank you! Lou Ellen Cann PS:I am delighted to meet you and would we be cousins?

It is all handwritten and in some cases he wrote directions to the cemetary. In looking at it tonight he provided where Lucrecia's father (Willaim Penn Williamson) is buried. There is also information on the Mink connection as well.

My name is Kathy Chafin Walker.

Teasing out my Chaffin Line - Lillie Dell Chaffin b. 1873

I'm looking for a little help from any knowledgeable person willing to assist!

According to my great aunt, my 2nd great-grandmother's name was Lillie Dell Chaffin (b. 1873 in GA and died 1927, in GA or perhaps FL) who married Charles Edgar Minor (b. 1873 in GA and d. 1964 in Miami, FL). They had 3 children (Nellie Minor, Fred Edgar Minor and Nora Dell Minor - my great grandmother).

I believe Lillie Dell Chaffin may be the daughter of George W. Chaffin (b. 1845 in GA) and Martha A. Eubanks and that George W. Chaffin may descend from Isham Chaffin (b. abt 1757) through his son Joshua (b. abt 1775) and Joshua's son, Joshua (b. 1814).

What little information I have has been culled from public member trees and wrt to Isham/Joshua/Joshua, from the book, The Georgians: genealogies of pioneer settlers By Jeannette Holland Austin. I will admit to finding the Chaffin line quite confusing and am looking for any help in teasing it out.

As an aside, Charles Minor and Lillie (Chaffin) Minor's daughter, Nora Dell Minor, married Theodore Claude Hunt, and they had 2 daughters, one of whom (my grandmother) was named Nora Dell Hunt - given that the name Nora Dell was used in 3 generations, I was surprised not to find it in any earlier generations (which is one of the reasons I question whether I am on the right track).

Any insight into this Chaffin line is greatly appreciated!
