Thank you for sending the link. I was unable to find this Hugh Chain in my Columbiana County Cemetery index and I don't have any info to confirm who this Hugh Chain is.I need to find a death certificate on him or the cemetery record of when he was interred to be sure who he was.

Do you know who provided the information on his wife and children? If it is Hugh Chain, Elizabeth's father, then his first wife and children by that marriage should be listed also at find-a-grave.

In general, one of the problems with listing genealogy research online is that the information is only as accurate as the person providing it has verified. In this case, who ever listed the information did not either know about the children from the first marriage or the first marriage or did not list them thinking it had no relevance on their ancestors. Thus lost ancestors floating around waiting to be discovered.

David->Saxton->Raymond->Aubrey- Aubrey is your grandfather, right? I sent you back an email to the one you sent me privately. This William Chain is our 4th g-grandmother's younger brother by her father's 2nd marriage. I have only found records for Elizabeth's father in Cumberland County, PA. In my research, I have not found Elizabeth well documented anywhere. One item I did find was a marriage announcment for either Rachel or one of her sisters which stated she was the daughter of Elizabeth and David Gilson of Columbiana County.

I too am a descendant of Elizabeth Chain & David Gilson. They were my 3rd great grandparents through their daughter Rachel Gilson m. Saxton Sykes through their son Raymond Gilson Sykes m. Clarissa Luse through their son Aubrey Luse Sykes who m. Anna Ruth Swallow through their son Quintin Swallow Sykes who is my biological father.

While looking for Bowers info in Fayette County Pennsylvania came across a deed in Book V, page 507, June 6, 1838, William Bowers, son of Timothy Bowers, deceased, and other heirs of Timothy Bowers including Isabella, wife of John Chain. I am thinking this John Chain is the grandfather of Andrew Jackson Chain son of James Chain, as Andrew Jackson Chain married William Bowers' daughter, Jane in Brown County, Ohio in 1841.

Shirley Chain Glorius has done a lot of research on the family, and is the best source I can suggest. She has posted much of her research with Ancestry.com. I believe in order to get to the information, you have to be a paying member.
I do know that there were at least two other Margaret Chain's before the one you're researching:

2. MARGARET CHAIN born May 20, 1802 died Oct 23, 1862

We know that William was in Fayette County and are assuming that Margaret Chain is also of Fayette. We need help in finding who her father and mother are. In one of the Chain lines I am studying I have a John Hamilton Chain who married Ann Evans on 27 Oct 1808 PA. John was born 16 Dec 1781 PA and died 9 Apr 1819. Children: Hannah, Eleanor, James, Mark, and Benjamin.

Seems strange that the birthday of John matches as does his wife but the names of the children are different.

Thanks for the quick reply, I am not sure if their is a connection, Census telles me my John came from Ireland, but I will have a look in Scotland and see what I can find out on that end. I have a feeling he had a brother named William, but no proof as of yet.

My GG Grandfather was a different John Chain, born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1807. He said the Chains were Scotch-Irish, meaning they came to the US from Scotland via Ireland. Perhaps the reason you are having trouble is that you need to look in Scotland.

I am also curious as you indicate that you are from Oklahoma. I have a great number of Chain relatives in Oklahoma. My GGrandfather was John Marcus Chain, b.1849 in Pike County, Ohio. Is there any connection?

Hello...

I am searching for the parents of John Chain. All I know about John is that he was born about 1781 Ireland, and married Ann Evens, his children are : John Thomas, Catherine, Annie, and William, all children were born in Cheshire England.
I do have info on wife and all children, BUT... John seems to be my Brick Wall, if anyone has any info. or can point me in the right direction in Ireland to look for his parents. I would be most greatful, and willing to share any info. I have or find on this family.

Generation 6: Marion Dennis Chain, born 11-18-1894 South Ripley, KY, died March 4, 1921, 5 days after the birth of his only child, of wounds received two years early in the Battle of the Argonne, during WW1, when he was shot in the face, the bullet going in one side of his jaw and out the other. Marion married Georgia Gladys McDonald. "Gladys" was born 01-02 between1892 and 1898 in South Ripley, KY and died on 06-29-1969, and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Newport, Campbell Co., KY. Marion had one brother, Vernon Chain, now deceased. Marion was buried in the evergreen Cemetery, Newport, KY. After Marion's death, Gladys married Fred Carter, who is also deceased. Gladys and Fred had no children.

I'm also descended from William Chain, and his wife Margaret (Peggy, last name unknown), through his son John who married Isabell (last name unknown); James Chain, who married Margery Nicholson; Robert Chain, who married Mary Dehart Boone, daughter of John Boone and Margaret "Peggy" Cooper; Robert Nelson Chain, who married Mary Frances Moore; Marion Dennis Chain, who married Gladys McDonald. Their son, Marion Dennis Chain, Jr, was my father.

I believe it was John Chain who went with Daniel Boone to what is now the Kentucky/Ohio area. There's a Boone family cemetery at Ginger Ridge, Adams County, Ohio. You can view the remaining names on tombstones there via the internet just by pulling up the name of the cemetery. You may find it interesting that there are more Chains than Boones listed.

Also, William Chain was NOT from Laine, Ireland. There is no such place. That was mistakenly picked up by a fellow researcher from some research I had done in Ireland on a non-related Chain family. A younger generation of that Chain family ran a steamer out of LARNE, Ireland, and has nothing whatsoever to do with William Chain who lived in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. It is a mistake that is being picked up all over the internet.

The following is what I have on Hugh H. Chain and his family who were
residents of Caldwell County. Any further biographical information would
certainly be welcome!!

HUGH H. CHAIN, born 4 April 1807 son of William Chain Jr. and Nancy and MARY
ROSEBURG born 1 August 1812 daughter of Thomas Roseburg and Margaret Fife.
Hugh H. and Mary Roseburg were married about 1830 or 1831. Both were born in
Ohio, and they were married in Ohio. They had 11 children: Calvin J. born
1831, Martha Jane born 1833, Alpheus C. born 20 January 1835, Nancy born
1837, Thomas Jefferson born 18 March 1840, Samantha Margaret born 1842,
Newton William born 1845, Mary Ellen born 22 December 1847, Emma Frances born
31 July 1849, Sarah Hester and Elizabeth Rebecca (twins) born 18 February
1852.

In 1859, the family moved to Kingston, Caldwell County, Missouri during the
construction of the Hannibal and St. Joseph railroad. New towns along the
railroad had created a building boom, and Hugh, being a carpenter had a good
trade. He would often be absent from home for weeks on jobs, sometimes
traveling as far as Hannibal (approximately 160 miles) to build houses.

Early pioneers that came to Caldwell County had to follow trails rather than
roads. Three brothers who settled there named Lyon founded the town of
Kingston in 1833. A road from Richmond to Gallatin which passed through
Kingston was eventually built and was the only thoroughfare connecting
Caldwell County to the Missouri River. In 1855 a stage coach line was
established along this route which made access to Kingston easier. The stage
coach line was established just four years before Hugh and his family came to
Kingston.

Hugh had a narrow escape from death during the Civil War. He was captured by
the Thrailkill (Confederate) Force in 1864, (this was the same year your
great-great grandfather William Newton was born) and was in extreme peril,
along with four other men, of being killed. A party of marauders, under the
command of Major Thrailkill, entered the area killing three people because
they were Union men, and shooting at others. In Hamilton, they broke open the
vaults and safe in the court house and got about $8,000 belonging to the
school fund, and destroying all papers pertaining to the enrolment of the
militia while leaving other papers undisturbed. One of the other captives,
Aaron Pfost, was a Mason and threatened the Thrailkill force with Masonic
enmity if the harmed any of the captives. They were, as a consequence, set
free. The purpose of Thrailkill's raid was to obtain plunder and recruits for
the rebellion, and to punish the people in Caldwell County for taking a stand
against the rebellion. Many horses and other property were taken from the
citizens, but the greatest loss was that of the school fund.

As near as can be determined, the Chains were Union sympathizers during the
Civil War. Everything found either indicates they were shocked or distraught
over the activities of Confederate Soldiers in the area. In an interview with
Sarah Chain in 194, she recounts the story of a notorious store in the 1860s
where "Southern" soldiers gathered to organize. No evidence has been found to
suggest that any of the Chains of this era fought in the Civil War.

Sarah (sister of Alpheus) remembers, as a child, small bands of Indians
wandering into the town of Kingston, scaring the children to death. Actually
all they wanted was some food. Another story she tells is about a store,
called the Northup-Lewis Store which the Confederate Forces under Thrailkill
"rifled" the store, and created quite a sensation in the town of Kingston.

By the 1860s, sons Alpheus and Thomas Jefferson were helping Hugh as
carpenters, and a third son, Newton, was learning to be a "tinner", working
for his brother-in-law Charles Davis (Samantha Chain's husband). Another son
Calvin J. was listed in Ohio census records, but not in Missouri. Calvin was
the eldest son, and last known place of residence was Summitville, Ohio, so
it is assumed that he remained in Ohio when the rest of the family moved to
Missouri.

Sarah Chain taught school in Caldwell County, Missouri for over 30 years
beginning in the 1870s. In those days, you got a teacher's certificate by
going up for examination on appointed days. There were 3 grades lasting one,
two and three years. Later, in the 1880s, the Summer Teachers Normal was held
for four weeks ending with examination. Passing the test was a rigorous
ordeal, but a fair one, in the words of Sarah Chain.

Hugh Chain was also the owner of two different hotels. In Kingston in the
late 1850s, he owned and operated the Kingston House, later called the Cadmen
Hotel, and in 1881 he built the Chain House at Hamilton, Missouri (later
named the Snyder Hotel which was still standing in 1934). Hugh died in 1884,
after which his three unmarried daughters Mary Ellen, Emma and Sarah ran the
hotel.

Hugh Chain (died 7 April 1884), his wife Mary (died 9 February 1890) and
three daughters, Mary Ellen (died 24 May, 1900), Emma Frances (died 26
January 1922) and Sarah Hester (died 3 July 1940) are all laid to rest in the
Highland Cemetery, Section N ½ 5, Hamilton, Caldwell County, Missouri.

I am a direct descendant of Hugh and Alpheus Chain, and Alpheus' son William
Newton Chain. The birthplace of William Newton is unknown at this time, I

Generation 3: James Chain, born about 1791 KY, died 04-1854 Sardinia, Brown Co., OH, married Margery Nicholson, born about 1796 in PA, died about 1840, Brown Co., OH.

Generation 4: Robert Chain, born 01-28-1814 Fayette Co., PA, died 1902 Adams Co., OH (buried in Ginger Ridge Cemetery, Adams Co., OH) married Mary Dehart Boone, daughter of John Boone and Margaret "Peggy" Cooper Boone, born 09-15-1814 died 09-18-1897 (buried in Ginger Ridge Cemetery, Adams Co., OH).
The De Bohun/Boone connection is through Mary Boone. Here I am inserting some of the Boone genealogy:

Boone Generation 24: George Boone III, born 11-17-1666, Devonshire, England, died 02-27-1743/1744 in berkes County, Pennsylvania. Married Mary Maugridge in 1689 in Devonshire, England, born 1668 in Devonshire, England. By this time, the Boones had become Quakers. George was a philanderer, and went before the congregation to admit that he had committed adultery. However, his children were all Mary's children, of which they had ten in all, including Squire Boone, father of the explorer, Daniel Boone, and Joseph, Squire's brother. Joseph would be first cousin to Daniel Boone, the explorer.

Generation 25: Joseph Boone, born 04-05-1704 in Devonshire, England, died 01-31-1776 in North Carolina. Married Catherine (Brown) Warren on 08-20-1729 in Pennsylvania. Catherine was born 08-20-1708 in Exeter Township, Berks county, Devon, Pennsylvania.

Generation 26: Joseph Boone, Jr., born 04-30-1730 in Berks County, PA. Married Elizabeth Warren in Aug, 1749 in Berks Co., PA. Elizabeth was born in 1728.

Generation 27: Jacob Boone, born 08-15-1754, Berks Co., Pa, died 05-04-1827, Marysville (Maysville), KY. Married Mary DeHart in 1772 in Berks Co., PA. Mary was born 10-18-1753 in Berks co., PA, and died on 07-30-1828 in Marysville (Maysville), KY. Jacob was a soldier in the American Revolution. Jacob and his cousin, Daniel Boone, the pioneer, are considered two of the founders of Maysville, Kentucky (they laid out the town of Limestone, which later became Maysville) and Jacob donated the land for the cemetery. Jacob lived in Maysville from 1785 till his death in 1827.

Generation 28: John Boone, born 1795 Adams Co., Oh, died 12-22-1842 in Bradyville, Sprigg Twp, Adams Co., Ohio. John married Margaret (Peggy) Cooper, daughter of William (fought in American revolution) and Elizabeth Richmond Cooper in Adams County, Ohio (Rev William Middleton performed ceremony, according toWest Union, Adams Co., Ohio, Probate Court Records). John served in the War of 1812, as a Private in Lt James Cambell's 1 Co 17th Infantry from 08-06-1812 to 08-1813. He was at Ft Meigs during both sieges of that fort by the British and Indians in the spring of 1813.

John is listed in the Jacob Boone family bible as a son of Jacob and Mary, but it looks like he may have been excommunicated from the Quaker faith, or left it willingly, and was ostracized for it, because he is left out of many of the records, or listed only on some as "an unknown relative". Court records of 01-30-1828 show John selling to his younger brother, William Dehart Boone, for the sum of $600.00, all of his inheritance which he was entitled to and had not yet received from the estate of his parents, Jacob and Mary Boone.
John was friend and neighbor to the Rankin family whose home was part of the underground railroad, and family stories tell of John's knowledge and help with the underground "passengers".
Two of John's sons served in the Civil war, one for the North and one for the south. William was a private with the Union, OVI, Co. H, 182nd Reg from August, 1864 to 07-07-1865. Henry served the Confederacy from 07-01-1863, enlisted age 23 in Maysville, KY, Co. A, 4th Volunteer Infantry, discharged 12-31-1864 at Catlettsburg, KY

Generation 29: Mary DeHart Boone born 09-15-1814, died 09-18-1897, married (December, 1837) Robert Chain, born 01-28-1814, died 1902. Both are buried in the Ginger Ridge Cemetery, Adams County, Ohio. Mary had a sister, Indian (Indiana) Boone, who married a Nathaniel Blythe.

Generation 30: Robert Nelson Chain, born 10-26-1862 Manchester, Adams Co., OH, died 11-10-1906 Manchester, Adams Co., OH. Married Mary Frances Moore (born 06-28-1871 Fleming Co., KY, died 07-12-1919 (buried in Vine St. Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH). Married on 12-12-1888 in Flemingsburg, Fleming Co., KY.

This is Judy Chain Arnett (Marion Chain's daughter). I'm glad to see that you're still into the Chain/Boone genealogies. It's been awhile since I've looked into it, and I'm finding a lot more information on the web than there was a year or two ago.
I'd still love to have some kind of reunion at the Ginger Ridge cemetery. Anyone else out there interested? After all, even though it is the Boone Family Cemetery, there are more Chains than Boones buried there, and I'd like to go back while some of the tombstones are still standing.

Peggy: It is not true that William Chain was probably from Laine, Ireland (there is no such place). That seems to be widely reported on the internet and stems from information I forwarded to a researcher in California. I had done some research in Ireland on a Chain family there where one James Chain lived in Larne, Ireland. James Chain's line in Ireland is not connected (as far as I can tell from my research)to William Chain who lived and died in Fayette Co., PA. It is entirey possible William Chain of Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, (probably of Scots-Irish descent) came to America from Ireland but certainly NOT from Laine, Ireland. Hope this helps in your research.
