To: mgrCan75 Posted:	11 May 2012 8:26AM

My current set of information says yes, but that's the very information I have cause to doubt due to the paperwork differences.
Feel free to add it in. Jonathan leaves a lot to be found. He married my gggrandmother even though she was engaged to a man named Smith, She had met him at a town social. She lived near Hazelhurst. She had the two sons, John Wilbur and Marshall, then they divorced. She went back home and spread it around that he had died in a trolley accident in NO. She worked in a drugstore, AND took up smoking!! She later married another man and had more children, but, alas, become "different". I found him with his parents after the 1903 "trolley accident", and later with another wife. I lost him after that. File under unusual happenings of the times"?

Well it's always nice to meet a long lost relative, even if not in person. Natchez is a beautiful town. I've been there many times. It's a pretty short drive from Baton Rouge and it's always a nice place to make a day trip and eat at Biscuits & Blues. I hope you don't mind if I use your research in my family tree. I was aware that my great-grandfather, Charles Oscar, had a brother, but I have not gotten around to researching his branch yet. If you have any questions about my branch, please let me know.

You will find a photo of Alexander M. Chalmers and the following comment at this website. It gives a different year of birth but I believe it is your person because the spouse is the same. I came across this while working on a different Chalmers family. (My tree on Ancestory.com is KeelerKropin and includes some Chalmers but not connected to Alexander as far as I know.)

http://www.westsoundhall.org/HistoricPhotos.html

In 1900 Alexander M. Chalmers deeded the present site of the West Sound Community Hall to the West Sound Hall Company with the stipulation that the "... property be used for a site of a Public Hall...".

Mr. Chalmers was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1835. He was captain of a sailing ship for many years. He moved to Orcas Island from Liverpool, England in 1893 and became a U.S. citizen in 1898. He died in 1912 in Bellingham.

Bonnie Kroplin bonnie.kroplin@gmail.com

I moved to Kansas City a couple of years ago, but I usually go home once or twice a year. I also manage a public library, so I do have access to some pretty good resources. One of my staff has a strong interest in genealogy and she has been helping me as well. I will post anything new that I find.

Out of curiosity, what is your relationship to Charles Chalmers (1825)? If you are also a descendant of his, then that makes us cousins.

Thank you for the confirmation. It has had me wondering for years. I am a little too far away to hop down to check it out. A second cousin in New York has been digging and proposed the connection, though I have found no evidence of the connection either. It would connect us to George Washington if it were so. I will let you know if I come up with any more. Again, thanks.

I have uncovered a little more information. Charles Leven Chalmers and his wife Mary Evans Chalmers are both buried in Tangipohoa Cemetery in Tangipahoa, LA. These are definitely the same people as we have previously discussed, my great-great-grandparents. The dates on his tombstone are 1825-1911 and the dates on her tombstone are 1841-1924. There is also a New Orleans death certificate for him that lists his date of death as 10/19/1911 at age 85. So apparently the census records are not accurate for either of them. I had actually noticed some discrepencies in the records already. The different census records don't even agree with each other. I believe this 1825 date from his tombstone, confirmed by his death certificate, to be an accurate date. Hopefully this will help in our research. I do not believe there is any connection between Charles and Joseph Williams Chalmers, but I am still looking into that possibility. Please post anything new that you come up with.

I still can't find any record of who my great-great-grandfather Charles Chalmers' (b. 1835, VA) parents were. How was this connection to Joseph Williams Chalmers (b.1806, VA) established? I am familiar with his son, James Ronald Chalmers (b. 1831, VA). He was a Confederate General who served under Nathan Bedford Forrest. It would be interesting if he were Charles Chalmers' older brother, because they were both in General Albert Sidney Johnston's army at the Battle of Shiloh. Charles was a private in the Louisiana Crescent Regiment, which was raiseed in New Orleans, and saw heavy action around the Hornet's Nest at Shiloh. That is where Charles lived later in life, working as a deputy sheriff. Actually, he was my first ancestor to move to New Orleans, which is also where my father was from. I grew up in Baton Rouge, though.

David Chalmers, Glasgow, 1874+, ties to Tarbert Chalmers

I'm getting conflicting information and am not sure if my g grandfather lied on his papers at some point. He was born abt 1874 in Glasgow. His marriage register to my g grandmother Isabella Barlow of Feb 1, 1895 gives his parents as Alexander Chalmers and Agnes Christie. His visa info from the 1920s lists his brother in Glasgow as Tarbert Chalmers. The only Tarbert Chalmers I can find in the records was Tarbert McKellar Chalmers born to David Chalmers and Elizabeth Christie, and he died aged 85 years September 14, 1956 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, widower of Anne Hynds and Margaret Candl (sp). I'm having no joy of finding a birth register for him as the son of Alexander and Agnes in Glasgow (did find one in a different county) and particularly with a brother named Tarbert - in fact, there was only one Tarbert Chalmers listed period in Scotland that I could see following the mid 1920s departure of David and his family (David also had a son Tarbert, my g uncle). At this point I don't know what to think; the incorrect information has three different points to come in. The birthplace, the marriage register, or the visa. Are there any descendants of Tarbert McKellar Chalmers out there who have family lore of a possible brother David Chalmers whose wife was named Isabella, and there were 8 living children, one of the boys named Tarbert too?

Hello, Helen. Thank you for making a reply to my query. I do have some information on your husbands family lines, but have never been able to prove connections of them to my hubby's line. I suspect, but have not proven, that a David Chalmers, b. May 1819, who married on 30 Apr 1844 our Ann Chalmers b. Jan 1821, was a son of your James Chalmers & Margaret Meil. The naming pattern would fit, but it would also fit James Chalmers and Margaret Miller. If we new what the "M" initial in his and our Annie's daughter stood for it would certainly help. Perhaps you have some information from your research that could help us in that quest. Since Chalmers is my hubby's maternal line, we could not do much in the "Goon". We have had the 67 marker test done on my hubby and plan to have the mtDNA test done on the sample FT now has. I will be happy to share any information I have. Feel free to contact me directly.

William CHALMERS b.1802 & Mary Bowman b.1811 - Auquharney, Cruden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Hiya - have a couple of gaps in my Chalmers tree for the descendants of the above. A quick run down:
William (1802) m. Mary Bowman (1811), 12 children;
Christian b 1831
Mary 1833
Ann 1836
Margaret 1837
William 1840
James 1842
Isabella 1845
George 1847
Alexander 1849
Elizabeth 1851
Helen 1853
Catherine 1856

So far have marriages for Ann, William, George and Helen

Then from William (1840) he married Charlotte Sim (b 1839) and together they had 10 children;

William 1864
Jessie 1865
Charles 1867
James 1869
Robert 1870
Mary 1873
Elsie 1874
George 1876
Alexander 1877
Maggie Ann 1881

Have marriages etc for all except Charles and James. George is my Great Grandfather. Have heard that my Grandfather, Sydney Charles Chalmers (NZ) was named so for his Uncle Charles who apparantly spent time or lived in Sydney Australia.

Also interested in parents of William (1802) - have a name of Jane Chalmers and a note saying died before 1881...and that is where it ends!

Any contributions greatly received and given!
Thanks - Rochelle Baxter & Lorraine Baxter (nee Chalmers)

I believe your father, Luther, is my mother's brother and her father is Thomas Spencer Chalmers. I know very little about the Chalmers but I do remember meeting Uncle Luther.

Maybe if we share information we can connect missing links.

I work in a genealogy library in Houston, Texas USA. We are looking for descendants of John and Elizabeth Chalmers Cardno of Aberdeen, Scotland. The last known descendant was their gggrandson, James Farquhar Cardno who died in Leeds, UK in the mid to late 1970's.

James Farquhar Cardno was on the 4-man Bobsleigh team who won a medal at the 1936 Olympics in Germany.
hello, good to hear from you again distant cousin, Sorry i couldn't return a reply earlier, i have read a little bit about him over the years, but nothing real extensive, but it was quite intresting, but whether it was true or not i couldn't tell you, because it was very little paraghs in articals on the net that mentioned him, but it seemed to be one of the secrets of the Chalmers family. Which there are many i might add. I never thought much of the stuff that i read about him, because i didn't know really who he was or how or if he was a part of my Chalmers family an it jumped all over the the place an didn't make much sense to me, an nothing really fit until i started talking to a WR desendant in Australia then it seemed to make sense why the stuff jumped around an there was at least 2 maybe 3 women invold that i know of through a few lines on him in artical i read on the net a couple years back. But now it makes sense why the family tried to distant themself from him an remove any knowledge of his life. If you like please email me at unionmanpf@hotmail.com....Cheers....Scotty

Hi Scotty, The family tree that I have shows your descendent Rev William Chalmers, Principal and my descendent James Chalmers 1811-1850.
His son my GGfather was William Robson Chalmers 1835-1908 a calligrapher/printer, his first wife Alfra VD Raymond(S.Africa) and 2nd wife Zaldah S Berry (Australia)I don't know of a wife that went to America or anything about cannibals.
The part that ties up with my records is "his dad and mum were married in Port Elizabeth in South Africa 28 Oct 1833, his dad was a army surgeon an died there on 25 Nov 1850"
William seems to be a common name. If you have any info about WR Chalmers 1835-1908 please let me know. Thanks

Recently, I have had a young cousin to connect Charles (1835) to a possible father - Joseph William Chalmers (1806) in Halifax, VA. This connects Charles to a very illustrious family tree, naming James Ronald C (1766), and Ronald C (1736), as grandfather and gt grfthr. I cannot find other mention of this, but a will for Joseph Wm Chalmers would probably name him. Do you have resourses to find this?

I am not familiar enough with English records, but it is quite often the case with Scottish birth records that the REAL fathers name will be given, and if necessary a correction will be made to the original record if a court case was involved.

Hi, I found out that John Frederick Chalmers was actually born John Frederick ANDREWS, which would explain why I couldn't find a birth record. Apparently, his mother, Rose Crouch Andrews became divorced from Tom Andrews not long after John Frederick was born. She then married my great-grandfather, John William Chalmers. I am not sure if John Frederick Chalmers was the biological son of my great-grandfather, but there is circumstantial evidence to say that it was probably the case. The petition for divorce is filed with the UK Natl Archives, and in it Tom Andrews lists my great-grandfather as a co-respondent, which would imply that there was some infidelity.
