I also know some who are closer in relation to them.

Take care,
Sharon
PS, I wouldn't mind a copy of Lyman and Abbie's photo for my tree. :)

Re: Henry Chamberlain 1834-1865

This is Henry Chamberlain, born 16 Mar 1834, Quainton, Buckingham, England, died 16 Jul 1865, Leroy Twp., Calhoun Co., MI, who was married, 7 Nov 1852 in Washtenaw Co., MI, to Lucy/Louisa Decamp, b. 1834, NY, d. 1909, Calhoun Co., MI, daughter of Abraham Decamp and Abigal Butler. Henry is the 5th of 6 known children of William Chamberlain, born before 30 Jan 1799, Quainton, Buckingham, d. 1865, probably in Webster Township, Washtenaw Co., MI, who was first married, 9 Jul 1821 in Quainton, to Eleanor Mayho, daughter of Joseph Mayho and Hester Bristow. The Chamberlain family came to Washtenaw County in 1836. Some ancestry of this family is also recorded, mostly from IGI records.

The cause of Henry's death remains unknown. According to descendant Randy Mack, Henry is buried with his wife in Sonoma "Morgan Cemetery," located in Section 2, 5 Mile Rd., Sonoma. Randy states that Henry was discharged from the Civil War, 15 Jun 1865, where he perhaps served in a group called "Merril's House," unconfirmed except from a listing of Merril's Horse Roster.

This Chamberlain family and the DeCamps lived in the early years in Webster Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, where I happen to be the local historian and also a leading Chamberlain researcher [one of the cofounders of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society in 1996] - hence my rather extensive, detailed knowledge of this particular family. The Chamberlain parents are buried in the local Webster Church cemetery here. Please contact me, James B. Parker, at jbparker@provide.net, if you wish to discuss this matter in greater detail. See also Randy Mack's GenForum Chamberlain postings dated 22 Jan 2000; 28 Jan 2000; 7 Feb 2000 - he subsequently corresponded with me. My research notes state:

NOTES
Ref. RootsWeb.com family tree, at http://www.macksshack.com, entitled "Mack's Shack", created by Randy C. Mack [Email: rcmack@macksshack.com ], who broadcast his update/completion of this site to his Email address list, including JBP, 27 Jul 2004.
END OF NOTES

If you do contact me, please let me know how you are connected to your great great grandfather, Henry Chamberlain, for my research records here.
For the benefit of Chamberlain researchers, this is Dorville Chamberlin Sr., b. 18 Jun 1820, Wheelersburg, Scioto Co., Ohio, died 31 Dec 1864, Albia, Monroe Co., Iowa, who was married second, 6 May 1852, to Catherine Kerns, b. about 1822, Kentucky, daughter of Jobe & Nancy Ann Kerns, died 3 Jul 1895, Missouri, with 6 children listed for them: Polly Ann, George W., Melvina, Catherine, Dora and Dorville (I have some descendants listed for Catherine and Dorville). Dorville Sr. was married first about 1838, probably in Scioto Co., OH, to Sarah Baccus, born about 1822, Ohio, daughter of Christian Baccus, died about 1851, probably Scioto Co., OH, with 7 children listed for them. Dorville is 1 of 8 children of Wyatt Chamberlin, born 26 Jun 1790, Pomfret, Windsor Co., VT, died 16 Feb 1856, Scioto Co., OH, who was married 15 Oct 1813 in Scioto Co., OH, to Mary "Polly" White, b. 31 Dec 1790, VT, d. 20 Feb 1856, Scioto Co., OH, daughter of Abel White and Sarah Comfort. The ancestral line of descent is listed as: Wyatt (1763-1808/09), Oliver (1738-1821), Benjamin (about 1701-1750), Joseph (about 1665-1752), William (about 1623-1678), Henry Chamberlin (about 1592-1674) - the oldest of the five original Ch'n immigrant ancestors in early New England (unrelated to the other four). Please refer to the formally prepared Family Group Record by the late Ch'n genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, for Dorville Chamberlin, identified as #LN3233, in the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society, easily located on the internet - copies of this FGR and those for each of Dorville's ancestors can be downloaded by the public from this website. And please contact me, James B. Parker, Email: jbparker@provide.net, if you have any questions concerning this matter - I'd like to learn more about how you descend from Dorville, whom you said was your great grandfather.

Just an update - Louise, I'm trying to catch up with you as I can now connect my Chamberlains to yours and to Trevor's.

Moses Chamberlain Sr (bur 4 Feb 1771, All Saints, Old Buckenham, Norfolk) & Sarah Burgamy (bur 18 May 1757 All Saints, Old Buckenham were parents of (among others):

1st child) John Chamberlain (chr 11 Jun 1738 All Saints, Old Buckenham, bur 15 Jul 1812 Great Massingham) - married Sarah Hubbard daughter of William & Mary Hubbard of Wacton, Norfolk (chr 11 Jan 1735/6 All Saints, Wacton, bur. 10 Aug 1803 Great Massingham) -- this is my branch. Their first four children were born in Wacton and the last three in Great Massingham. Third child and first son was John (1766-1813) who was the father of John Hoys Chamberlain from my 2005 message.

8th child) Moses Chamberlain Jr (chr 6 Feb 1752 All Saints, Old Buckenham, bur. 4 Jul 1822, Great Massingham) m.

I have some information on Lucy Ann Hunter's family to share. I am a decendant of her mother Lucy (Gardner) Hunter.

I have been able to piece together the following:
Lucy Ann Hunter's father was William Hunter, her mother was Lucy Gardner. One source has Lucy Gardner born in Salisbury New York in 1799. I am not sure about William Hunter, but he likely was born in New York as well around 1800 or 1801.

It may be that this is the same William Hunter and Lucy Gardner that were married by Judge Sturgis in Wayne County Michigan 15 Jan 1822.

William died before 1840. Lucy remarried Isaac Gray and had another daughter named Lucy. I believe the entire family are included in the 1845 Michigan census under Isaac Gray's name. Most likely Isaac died after 1845.

Around the time Lucy Ann married Daniel Chamberlain (1849), Lucy (Gardner) Gray and her remaining children (Nancy (1832 MI - ???), John W (1823 OH - 1863 OH), and Daniel Hunter (1828 OH - 1909 OH) and little daughter Lucy Gray (1845 MI - 1866 OH)) left Sturgis and moved to Edgerton, Ohio. Daniel Hunter and Lucy (Gardner) Gray are burried in Maple Grove cemetary in Edgerton. John W. died in the Civil War and is burried in Bryan Ohio (I believe).

I am not certain where Lucy Ann was born, but Daniel was born in Defiance County Ohio.

Re: John Chamberlain 1773-1807 of NJ, who m. Nancy Tapscott

James Chamberlin that you speak about was born, 30 Jan 1798, NJ, d. 28 Jun 1884, prob. Franklin, Warren Co., OH; married, 11 Apr 1882 in Franklin Twp., Warren Co., OH, to Mary Ann Cox (1806-1889), with 9 children recorded for them between 1823 and 1849 in Warren Co., OH. His father, John Chamberlin was born, 24 May 1773, in New Jersey, probably Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., d. 26 Dec 1807, prob. Franklin, Warren Co., OH; Nancy Tapscott, daughter of James Tapscott and Sarah Baird, was born, 23 Apr 1778, NJ, d. 27 Jun 1821, prob. Franklin, Warren Co., OH; 3 children are listed for them including James and his two sisters, Mary & Lucy. John is believed to be a son of Joseph Chamberlin (about 1739-before 12 Jun 1789) of Windsor Twp., NJ, and his first (unknown name) wife, who were married about 1762, with three known children including John and his sisters named Mercy & Lydia. John is believed (unproven) to be the same person as is listed as LN#600, son of Joseph(6) Chamberlin (LN#592), in the formally prepared Family Group Record prepared by the late Chamberlain genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr. - copies of this FGR and those for the ancestors of John are available to the public for viewing and downloading on the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society online. The ancestral line of descent is listed as: Joseph(6), John(5), John(4), Henry(3), John(2) the Quaker, Henry(1) Chamberlin - the oldest of the five original immigrant Ch'n ancestors in early New England.
DCC's FGR for Joseph(6) (LN#592) provides this information for his son John LN#600: "John(7), b. About 1763(?), probably Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ. He was named as co-executor of his father's estate along with Jonathan Combs and Allison Ely by the terms of his father's will dated 25 May 189, but declined to serve. There appears to be no further record of him."

I have very detailed research notes for John LN600 in my research database here, much of it from my extensive correspondence with Mike Wertz back in 2003. Please contact me via Email, at: jbparker@provide.net, if you wish a copy of this information or if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail with me.

Thank you, "bennylake65" for your posting - I hadn't known of a daughter named Alma in this family before, but I'm pleased to add her with her husband & 11 children to the lineage I maintain here. I found all 11 children listed in LDS records (mostly in PRF files - mostly created by someone named J. Hickey) online, and I see that Alma died, 14 Jan 1874, Louth Twp., Lincoln Co., Ontario. Please contact me via Email, James B. Parker, at: jbparker@provide.net, if you wish to discuss this information further, or if you wish to obtain my list of these 11 children with their birth, death, burial & spousal data. The data doesn't show where most of them lived or died, unfortunately, but at least two sons went to Colorado, where they died, and the oldest daughter, Matilda, settled in Detroit where she died in 1905. I have 11 children listed here for Dr. Joseph & Hannah Chamberlain, including 6 sons born between 1790 & 1813, and 5 daughters including your Alma b. 1798/99, and Abigail, Hannah, Amanda & Melissa - birth dates unknown.

The 6-year gap between Dr Milo and Joel Chamberlain was partly filled by a sister Alma, b. 1799. Alma married Felix Havens (a brother to the Drusilla Havens who md Dr Milo) abt 1818 [I do not have a marriage date for them] but the first of their 11 Children was born in 1819. They were residents of Louth Tp, Lincoln Co, Niagara, Upper Canada. Felix died in 1855 and Alma is reputed to have died in 1874, altho I cannot find her death record on the images. Perhaps she married again after Felix died (which was before registration of course) and so I wouldn't know what surname to search her under). I have 10 children for Dr Joseph and Hannah Chamberlain incl. Emma and Amanda of which we [at least, I] don't know their birth dates ... perhaps they also fill some gaps, for instance 1803 to 1810 is open.

Evidently you are the Regina Connelly, email: regann1@yahoo.com, with whom I corresponded in August 2002, in reply to your 30 May 2002 Ancestry.com posting, and again in Feb. 2004, at which time you were researching your great grandfather, Daniel Chamberlain (1841-1918) and his Civil War service record, and his father Simeon, born about 1 Apr 1793 in New York or New Jersey, died 6 Jun 1866, probably Crawford Co., PA. Numerous descendants in this line have been traced, but Simeon's origins remain unknown. My research notes here show numerous Chamberlain male descendants in the present generation who are still living, but no mention whether DNA testing has been accomplished - this should be done. Anyway, if you will contact me, James B. Parker, Email: jbparker@provide.net, via Email, I'll be glad to share the pedigree of Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain with you, though there is no reason that I know of to think he is in any way closely related to your Simeon. We can also discuss, if you would like, the best avenues of research to trace Simeon's origins.

Thank you so much for your work and reply. I am in your debt.

I do have evidence of Fanny being New York born. I just forgot when I was typing. I did not realize my mistake until I returned to my web page. I have her married to a Daniel Dunbar. Her son Herbert Eugene Dunbar was my great grandfather. I was just hoping to find some lineage on her. It seems that the women in these trees are too often left out: "unknown", "Mary...", "Mrs. Dunbar", etc.

Again, thank you so much.

Mary "Dunbar" Erickson

I am going to save your post to my family tree as part of the evidence.

Re: Fanny Ann Chamberlain

Fanny Ann Chamberlain's parents/orgins have not been identified in my extensive Chamberlain/lin records here, nor after considerable searching in available records online for a couple of hours this morning. She is identified in the 1850 census as follows:

- 1850 Census, Town of Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA, Frank Dunbar, p. 13, #185/195, 16 Sep 1850, age 35, farmer, $5000, b. MA; Fanny A., age 32, b. NY, insane; George F., age 11, attends school, b. MA; Herbert, age 10, attends school, b. MA; Milton, age 9, attends school, b. MA; Eugene, age 5, attends school, b. MA; Samuel, age 3, b. MA; 4 other persons listed

According to this record, they were married sometime before 1839, with 5 known children born between 1839 and 1847 in Massachusetts (per the above 1850 census record). She was born in New York State, rather than in Massachusetts as you have it listed. Daniel Franklin Dunbar is listed in several records online - born 27 Nov 1814, Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA, son of Daniel Dunbar & Candace Andrews. I was not able to identify him in Kansas census records (don't know why), but I did identify his son, Herbert Eugene Dunbar, b. 14 Apr 1845, Lenox, MA, died 10 Mar 1890, Tyro, Montgomery Co., KS, as being married, 22 Oct 1868 in Johnson Co., IA, to Elizabeth Ann Allin, b. 6 Apr 1847, Gambier, Knox Co., OH, d. 23 Apr 1882, Tyro, KS. Here are a couple of census records for them:

- 1870 Census, Scott Twp., Iowa City P. O., Johnson Co., IA, Eugene Dunbar, p. 509B, 3;14/15, 4 Jun 1870, age 25, farmer, $300, b. MA, U. S. Citizen; Elizabeth A., age 23, housekeeper, b. OH, parents of foreign birth; William W., age 10/12, b. July, IA; also Sam'l E. Allin, age 25, farmer, $300, b. OH, parents of foreign birth, U. S. Citizen. Living next door @ #15/16: Wm. Allin, age 63, farmer, $12,000/$1200, b. ENG, parents of foreign birth, U. S. Citizen; 1 other person listed
- 1880 Census, Fawn Creek Twp., Montgomery Co., KS, Eugene Dunbar, p. 226A, #191/196, 24 & 25 Jun 1880, Fawn Creek, Montgomery Co., KS, head, age 35, farmer, MA/MA/MA; Elizabeth A., wife, keeping house, age 33, OH/ENG/ENG; Wm. F., son, age 10, help on farm, IA/MA/OH; Fanny E., daughter, age 8, IA/MA/OH; Herbert E., son, age 6, MA/MA/OH; Fred, son, age 1, KS/MA/OH

An Ancestry.com "Browning-Watts Tree" says Fanny died, 17 Dec 1878, Berkshire, MA, and her husband died there, 23 Sep 1884 - both are buried in Church on the Hill Cemetery, Lenox, MA, per an LDS PRF file. So they returned from Kansas as some point, to Lenox, MA, and died there - your posting made no mention of this. There should be records of her death there: an obituary in newspaper, death record, burial record at the cemetery, and gravestone inscription, though since she preceded her husband in death, there is not likely any will or probate record. Records for her husband at the time of his death in 1884 may reveal more about her - in particular one should look for his probate record which, in addition to mentioning his living children as heirs, might also (a long shot) mention some of her relatives. The Berkshire County genealogical society (locate through RootsWeb online) should be contacted for assistance.

I did look, in my complete list here of all census records for all Chamberlains between 1790 & 1880, at the Berkshire Co., MA listings for 1820, when Fanny would have been about 3 years of age - there are 18 Ch'n families listed, several with young children, but none in Lenox. In 1830, there are 19 Ch'n families in this county, though none in Lenox - 6 of them have female children in the correct age bracket who could be your Fanny. Anyway, according to the 1850 census, she was born in NY, not in MA. I didn't locate any record of their marriage, but presumably they lived in Lenox after their marriage and were perhaps married there. Massachusetts & Berkshire Co. vital records should be searched for a record of this marriage, of course.

That's the best I can do from here. Please feel free to contact me via Email to discuss this information in greater detail: James B. Parker, at: jbparker@provide.net. Thank you for your posting.

Thank you, James. This confirms my thoughts about the parents of Arthur, and adds quite a bit of new information to my tree. Thank you very much for taking the time to assist me, it's greatly appreciated.

Mike

Please also refer to my 21 Mar 2001 GenForum Chamberlain posting, (in reply to a Sharon and to N. Van R. Johnson), stating that this Elizabeth Ch'n may instead be an unidentified daughter of Asher(5) Chamberlin [LN4687], three of whose sons moved to Stanstead, Quebec - see this FGR in the WCGS website for additional information. Anyway, my separate research file for a Betsey Chamberlin who married John Johnson, 30 Nov 1826 in Hatley, Quebec, with several children listed for them in Barnston, Stanstead [ including William b. 23 Jun 1827 and Sarah Sophia b. 9 NOv 1832], says this Betsey was born 28 Jan 1794 [place not stated], whereas my file for Elizabeth, daughter of Nathaniel [per my prior posting], says she was born 7 Jun 1790, probably in Newbury, Orange Co., VT. So, it appears that these may be two different persons. Again, please contact me, James B. Parker, via Email, at jbparker@provide.net, if you wish to discuss this information.

I'm pleased to see someone exploring this puzzle. Please refer to the Family Group Record prepared by the late Chamberlain genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr. [no relation to this line which descends from Richard(1) Chamberlain], where Elizabeth's father, Nathaniel(5) Chamberlin (1746-1801, of Hull, Quebec)[whose father-in-law was Edmond Elliot] is identified as LN#4673 in the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society [of which I was a cofounder in 1996], easily accessed online. The FGRs for this family can be viewed, downloaded and printed by the public, as desired. Here are my research notes for Elizabeth:

NOTES
LN4772. Also called Betsy in the Family Bible. Prentiss Glazier has her born 1794, wife of William Johnson. Husband Moses Edey listed by CA News, which says she married him in 1805 and died in 1829, and that Moses Edey was born c1783 and died about 1829. Per DCC, this information is at variance with the following account - rechecking needed, per DCC's FGR for this family.
History of Newbury, VT, p. 509, says " ... Elizabeth married a Mr. Johnson, an Englishman. After their marriage they removed to Canada, where he died in 1824, leaving several children. After his death, Elizabeth returned to Newbury and educated her children. In 1852 she went south to live with her children, where she died seven years later." Only two children are mentioned in The History of Newbury: 1) William, who first became a teacher and then a merchant. In 1901, he is retired and living at at Pensacola, Florida. 2) Sophia Johnson, married Dr. S. S. Forbes, of Pensacola, Florida. Elizabeth died 21 Jan 1859, Bellville, Alabama. Source also cited as: Wright-Chamberlin Genealogy, p. 375.
Ref. Chamberlain Key, Vol. VIII, No. 3, pp. 76-77, Query #2003-28, submitted by Norma Kingdon [also listed as Norma Jean Edey], PO Box 29, Poplar Point, MB, Canada ROH OZO [Email: kingdoms@mts.net], whose grgrgrandmother was Elizabeth Chamberlain who m. Moses Edey. Poplar Point is located about 40 minutes west of Winnipeg in Manitoba. Ref. detailed response by Welton Chamberlain printed in this issue of the Key, which lists ancestral lineage.
END OF NOTES

So, further research is needed.

According to my records, this is Arthur Belmore Chamberlin, b. 13 Dec 1854, South Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA, who was married, 14 Jun 1873, in Hanover, Plymouth Co., MA, to Mary Ann Smith, born c1854 in Prince Edward Island, Canada, daughter of Robert & Marie Smith. They had three known children: Sarah Melinda, b. 26 Jan 1873; Charles Rupert, b. Jun 1877; and Sarah Maria "Sadie", b. c1866 - all in Hanover, MA. Sadie was married, 24 Oct 1903, to Clarence McLaughlin Whitman, b. 24 Mar 1882, Duxbury, MA. Charles was married, 6 Aug 1898, probably in Hanover, to Elizabeth I. Hammond, with 10 children listed for them. Arthur was the 3rd of 7 known children of Josiah Warren Chamberlin, b. 11 Feb 1822, Hanover, MA, d. 5 May 1908 there, who was married to Sarah T. Ewell, 30 Nov 1848, in Scituate, MA, born 26 Jul 1830, Marshfield, Plymouth Co., MA, died before 1883, daughter of Luther & Sarah T. Ewell. Josiah Warren also married Melinda S. Cox (1822-1845), 12 Sep 1840 in Pembroke, Plymouth Co., MA, with 2 children listed for them; also Mary Jane Pratt, 5 Jul 1883 in Holbrook, Norfolk Co., MA, who died sometime after 1910. Marshfield was the home, by the way, of the famous Daniel Webster, for whom I have great admiration - the place where I reside here in Michigan - Webster Township, Washtenaw County, was named for him in 1833. Josiah was the eldest of 6 known children of Josiah Chamberlin, b. 17 Nov 1798, Hanover, MA, d. 4 Nov 1876 there, who was married, 26 Aug 1821 there, to Sophia V. Taylor, b. 15 May 1802, perhaps South Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA, died 23 Oct 1881 in Hanover, MA, daughter of Richard Taylor and Lydia Perry. The line goes on back, as follows: Josiah (1764-1829); Nathaniel (1722-1814); Freedom (1697-before 1774); Nathaniel (1659-1716); William (c1623-1678); Henry(c1592-1674). Arthur is identified as #LN3331 in the formally prepared Family Group Records, prepared by the late David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., a leading Chamberlain genealogist of my generation, whose FGRs can be accessed and downloaded by the public within the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society, online.
Greetings James. I'm wondering if you could help me with connecting a couple of Chamberlains in my line. I have Arthur Chamberlain, b. about 1854 in Massachussetts, m. to Mary A. Smith b. about 1852 in Prince Edward Island, Canada (or Nova Scotia, depending on which census you go by). They had one child that I'm aware of, Charles R. Chamberlin b. June 1877 in Norwell, Massachussetts m. to Elizabeth I. Hammond b. July 1878 in Hanover, Massachussetts.

My dilemma is, I think that the parents of Arthur are Josiah Chamberlain b. about 1826 in Hanover, Massachussetts and Sarah T. (Ewell?) Chamberlain b. about 1831 in Massachussetts. However, I can't link definitely link them. Do you have any information that can help me with this?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Mike

I'm pleased to see your reply, after several years, and to hear that you are still researching this matter. For the benefit of other researchers, Amanda's father, Daniel Fisk Chamberlain, b. 9 Oct 1814, Westerlo, Albany Co., NY, died 13 Jul 1893, Sturgis, St. Joseph Co., MI, is listed in my records here as the oldest of 6 children of Benjamin Chamberlain, b. c1794, Coeymans or Westerlo, Albany Co., NY, d. 8 Dec 1825, New Baltimore, NY (on the Hudson), who was married, 1813 in Westerlo, to Olive Cole (1796-1870), daughter of Shubael Cole and Lucy Farmer. Benjamin's parents are unknown, but his father is believed to be named John or Samuel - possibly the Samuel listed in Westerlo in the 1820 Census [probably the same person as the Samuel listed in Coaymans in 1810]. Persons with more information about this family's possible origins are invited to contact me, James B. Parker, via Email, at jbparker@provide.net.

Thank you for your reply.....even though it has been 4 years since you were so kind as to followup. For some reason, i didn't receive or missed a notification that you had done so. I have been busy these past 4 years with other things and am just now getting back to working on this family line. To continue your line of thinking, I have found Jesse Grush living in Cass County in 1900. It says he was single as well. I do wonder if the Amanda found in Sturgis is the correct one but I also wonder if she is the correct one, why was she listed as single and not divorced/widowed? Given the fact that they are both listed as single, I wonder if perhaps they eloped and hadn't told their families. I'm thinking the marriage record will give her parent's names to confirm that the Amanda in Sturgis is the correct one for my family and I'm soon going to St. Joseph County to look for other records. I appreciate your help in this matter. If I find anything new, I'll post it.

History of Newbury, VT, pg 509, says Betsey's Johnson husband d. Canada, 1824, & she then returned to Newbury to educate her children, and at some point, married Moses Edey. You say he d. 1841. Could she have had two Johnsons? History of Newbury names only two ch., William & Sophia. Are there others? I am working forward from Betsy's grandfather, Edmund Elliot.
