You mentioned that you would like a DNA test of relatives of Beekman and Malancton Chamberlin. Where do you go to have this test done?? Beekman is a GGG-Grandfather on my Mother's side. Would the test be valid?

The info that Jeanne provided me were the descendants of Joseph Chamberlin which (Capt.) Gad Chamberlin is listed as his son, but no mention of Beekman and Malancton, so I don't know where she came to the conclusion that Joseph Chamberlin was their father. I'm still waiting for a response. There are no Joseph names in Malancton or Beekman's descendants. There is one Phebe. The name that got repeated in both Beekman's and Malancton's descendents is Chauncey/Chancy. There appears to be a few Chauncey Chamberlin's in the NY,CT,MA, and Vermont area of the early families of the US. Taking a deep, deep breath, well, somebody has to do it.

I recently registered with findagrave.com and searched for Malancton Chamberlin and found a memorial left there by Jeanne Gorlick referring to Malancton's parents, Joseph Chamberlin and Phebe Berchard. I contacted Jeanne, but as yet, has shown me the proof I need. She stated that she got that info from an Ancestry.com member. Here is the link to the Memorial: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ch...;

Re: Chamberlin/Blasdell - Hull Canada

This appears to be the Rosanna(7) Chamberlain/lin, 1 of 9 children listed in my records here for Nathaniel(6) Chamberlain/lin, b. 9 Feb 1788, probably Newbury, Orange Co., VT, & Lydia Ferrin, b. about 1790, Canada. I knew nothing about Rosanna, until viewing your message, other than her name. Nathaniel probably died in Hull or Old Chelsea, Quebec, where some of his children were born beginning in 1814, but I'm uncertain about this. Nathaniel is 1 of 11 known children of Nathaniel (5) Chamberlain, born 5 May 1746, Northfield, Hampshire Co., MA, died 10 Dec 1801, Hull, Quebec, who was married, 30 Apr 1771, in Newbury, Orange Co., VT, to Mehitable Elliott, b. 17 Sep 1753, Rockingham, Chester Twp., NH, d. 22 Apr 1836, Hull, Quebec, daughter of Edumnd & Mehitable (Worthen) Elliott. This line has been traced on back to Richard(1) Chamberlain, one of the 5 original Ch'n immigrant ancestors in early New England. Refer to a professionally prepared (by the late David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr. of Salt Lake City) Family Group Record #4673 for Nathaniel(5) [and FGRs for each ancestor on back to Richard(1)] in the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society - easily located online - which FGRs you can view and download if you wish. The FGR for Nathaniel provides his Revolutionary War service record, by the way. Please contact me via Email, James B. Parker, at jbparker@provide.net, if you wish to learn more about Nathaniel(6) and his family.

I received an Ancestry.com message from "michelelcr" which I was unable to answer - the "button" it said to activate a reply didn't work! So hopefully Michele will receive this reply from me here. First, here is the information she posted:

"While searching the message boards, I saw a post that you had made leading me to believe that you may be able to help me with my research of my own Chamberlin line.
Re: Chamberlin/Bird connection

Dear Lisa,
Thank you for your response to my message. I'm not sure, from your information, that there are any connections between your Chamberlins/Birds and mine, but then I'm still on the surface of searching and who knows what might show up?

My Birds and Chamberlins seem to have coalesced in New Jersey. The Chamberlins were predominantly in North Jersey and the Birds in South Jersey--at least my branch of them. But somewhere along the line, they must have gotten together--either lawfully or not so lawfully!--and some of the Chamberlins ended up with the Bird DNA. Since it was the Bird DNA that got transmitted to the Chamberlins and not the other way around, it means a male Bird and a female Chamberlin must have done the job, or there was an adoption of a male Bird into a Chamberlin family who took the Chamberlin name and then passed his Bird DNA onto his progeny.

At any rate, it's a fascinating search. Thanks for your input and if you come across any other clues, I'd love to hear from you.

Pat

I have both Chamberlin and Bird in my tree. I have a Lela M. Bird born 1875 married to Samuel J. Sadler. One of Samuel's brother's descendent's married a Chamberlin.

I also have an Anastasia Bird Medley 1742-1800 that Chamberlin's are direct descendents of, but have not traced her family yet. Guessing Bird is her mother's maiden name. I know one of her son's was Charles Bird Strange.

Can you give me more info, such as where your Bird ancestors came from?

Lisa

Re: Marjorie L. Chamberlin

Marjorie L. Chamberlin, b. about 1924, San Jose, CA, is 1 of 5 known children of Allen Burr Chamberlin, b. 10 Sep 1872, Starbuckville, Warren Co., NY, d. 29 Aug 1953, Santa Clara or San Jose, CA, who was married, 24 Dec 1898 in San Francisco, to Rose Mespelt, b. 5 Feb 1875, Burlington, IA, d. 28 Oct 1958, Santa Clara or San Jose, CA. The ancestral line of descent is: Dr. Chester Usher (1849-1919); Rev. Chester (1807-1875); Benjamin (1771-1812); Benjamin (1742-1810); John Jr. (ca1715-1802); John (1686-after 1758); Benjamin (ca1653-1737); Richard (ca1618-1673) - one of the five original Chamberlain immigrant ancestors in early New England. I maintain a detailed lineage here for all known descendants of Richard(1), including the family you have identified. Refer to the formally prepared Family Group Records in the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society, wherein Dr. Chester Usher Chamberlin is identified as LN#6030 - he happerns to be a second cousin, once removed, of my own grandmother, Cynthia Ellen Chamberlin Hayes, by the way - she and her husband moved from Michigan to Fontana, California about 1929, but I have no reason to think she knew members of your family. My research notes for Chester Usher Ch'n refer to your 27 Feb 2005 Ancestry.com posting, I see. Here are my research notes for him:
NOTES
LN#6030. Aged one year at the time of the 1850 Census. Not listed in IGI records. Ref. Ancestry.com Chamberlain Message Board posting, dated 27 Feb 2005, by David Upton [Email: dupton@bak.rr.com ], providing information about this family and its descendants, as shown here, with the surname of Chamberlin instead of Chamberlain.
"A graduate of Albany Medical College, Dr. Chester U. Chamberlin opened his practice in Chestertown, New York in the early 1870s. His father performed the marriage to Sarah Potter there in 1871. I found a census with Chester living with his sister Hannah and her husband Waite Mead in Chester in 1870. I found him again on the 1880 census in Hartford, Washington, New York and in 1888 he moved to Albany, Oregon and later in 1899 he moved to California.
I found the records of the St. Johns Cemetery in Greenfield, New York. On this record are many Chamberlins; Champion M. Chamberlin, Juliette Wood Chamberlin, etc. There is also a Rev. Luther Chamberlin...how is he related? Rev. Chester Chamberlin and his family did live in Chester according to the 1860 census."
Per Kristin Barberia, his obituary states, "Dr. Chamberlin was a graduate of Albany Medical College. He began his practice of medicine in Chestertown, NY, in 1870. On September 17, 1871, married Sarah Potter by the Rev. Chester Chamberlin at Chestertown, NY. In 1888, moved to Albany, OR. He lived for 20 years in California, the last 14 in Los Gatos. The family home is at 46 Los Gatos Blvd., Los Gatos." My grandmother's ancestor, Dr. Joseph Fitch Chamberlin (1804-1890), was also a graduate of Albany Medical College, but in 1826 - much earlier than Marjorie's ancestor.

- 1870 Census, Chester, Warren Co., NY, p. 553, Chester Chamberlain, age 21, b. NY - living with his sister Hannah and her husband Waite Mead in Chester, per David Upton
- 1880 Census, Hartford, Washington Co., NY, p. 290A, Chester U. Chamberlin, head, doctor, NY/MA/NY; Sarah A., wife, age 27, keeps house, NY/NY/VT; Allen B., son, age 7, at school, NY/NY/NY; Winnie E., dau., age 3, VT/NY/NY
END OF NOTES

Please contact me, James B. Parker, at jbparker@provide.net, via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail.
Elizabeth Chamberlin married to William Calhoun

I am looking for more information regarding William Calhoun, born abt 1782 in Penny, Virgina and died Dec 28, 1853 in Armstrong, Indiana, Pennsylvania. He may have been married to either Elizabeth Chamberlin OR Elizabeth Lytle. He had three daughters, Margaret, Esther and Nancy. Margaret married Clement Nance, Esther married Wm. Pilgrim and Nancy married Joseph Jones. Margaret and Clement are my direct ancestors. I'm finding clues on William Calhoun but no documentation. I have two sources that Margaret, Esther and Nancy ARE sisters from Indiana. However, I don't have sources for their parents. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you, Sue suemanz.graham@comcast.net

Re: chamberlins in petersham/dana MA

I see this couple listed in LDS-IGI records and in an Ancestry.com "Winton Family Tree" online, listing their marriage, 18 Oct 1831 in Petersham, Worcester Co., MA, with accompanying census data for them. This Sophronia G. Chamberlin was born 1805-1806, probably in Massachusetts, but there is nothing to identify her in the records I've reviewed. You list her father as John Chamberlin, born c1780 - please advise your source/rationale for his information.

So, census data for 1810 list 5 families in Petersham and 2 in Dana, most of whom have young daughters. I've checked the ancestral records I maintain here for each of them carefully, and I see that a daughter named Sophronia is NOT named in any of these families, but there is one good possibility, however. This is John(6) Chamberlin, baptized 10 Oct 1779, East Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA, who was married, 11 Nov 1804, in Barre, Worcester Co., MA, to Lucy Hale (1786-1819). This couple lived in Dana in 1810 & 1820 and did have an unidentified daughter of the right age, who might well be your Sophronia. Please refer to the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society website, wherein you can locate thousands of professionally prepared Family Group Records, prepared by the late Ch'n genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., an associate of mine. Look for the FGR for this John(6) Chamberlin, identified as LN#1197. As you will see, there were several sons and perhaps one younger daughter in this family, none of whom have been identified. You can contact me, James B. Parker, at jbparker@provide.net. I'm one of the cofounders of the WCGS and an avid amateur Chamberlain researcher.

Re: Chester B. Chamberlin - Butterfield, Carr Family photos

I've been corresponding with Lisa Chamberlin O'Sullivan each year since 2008, most lately about her earnest desire to identify more of her family photos. For the benefit of other researchers, this is James Madison "Mattus" Chamberlin, born 25 Aug 1841, NY, died 28 Dec 1920, West Concord, Dodge Co., MN, who was married 28 Jul 1866, in Paw Paw, Van Buren Co., MI, to Lucy Jane Butterfield, born 10 May 1842, Alamo, Kalamazoo Co., MI, died 9 Dec 1914, Taopi, Mower Co., MN, daughter of Ephraim & Phebe (Johnson) Butterfield. 5 children are recorded for James & Lucy and at least six (in census data) are listed for Lucy's brother, Charles Asa Butterfield, who married Delia Chamberlin, born Jan 1848, NY. Jane and Delia are 2 of 10 known children of Chester B. Chamberlin, b. 6 Feb 1816, Strafford, Orange Co., VT, d. 21 Apr 1901, South Haven, Van Buren Co., MI, who was married about 1838, in Franklin Co., NY, to Olive Pierce (c1818-after 1860); Chester's second wife was Lucy L. Farmer (c1818-after 1880), married 10 Sep 1878, Arlington, Van Buren Co., MI. The ancestral line of descent is listed here as Amasa Jr. (1775-1861); Amasa (1748-1826); William Jr. (1712-1775); William (1689-1756); Joseph (c1665-1752), William (c1623-1678); Henry (c1592-1674) - the oldest of the five original Ch'n immigrant ancestors in early New England. Anyone wishing to share information or learn more about this Ch'n line is invited to contact me, James B.

I am a descendant of James Madison Chamberlin and Lucy Jane Butterfield, he is son of Chester B. and Olive Pierce, Chester son of Amasa Chamberlin. Lucy is daughter of Ephraim and Phebe Johnson. James' sister Dell married Lucy's brother, Charles Asa Butterfield.

I have many original photos of the Chamberlin, Cunningham, poss Butterfield and Carr families (dating as far back as the late 1800s.), as well as these names noted in the front of the photo album, some, as yet not connected to an unnamed photo, nor to our family tree, that we know of:

Pete Nelson family, Pete Sarel, Abr? Strauss,
"Pa’s cousins and children (This would be his father Chester Chamberlin's siblings families-- I have them all named.)
Lottie (Craver-Lyons) and Aunt Dell (Chamberlin-Butterfield)
Uncle Chuck - (is this Charles Butterfield, Dell's husband?)
Pluma (Chamberlin-Carr) Uncle Eddie and family (is this Edwin Carr, Pluma's husband?)
Uncle John and family (I have no sibling of either parent named John. He should be a Chamberlin or Butterfield based on the 'author' of this info.
Ma’s friends

This Chamberlin family is tracked fr VT -> NY-> IL->MI->IA->MN->SD, beyond and before. I would love to share this info with those interested. Also would love to hear from those who have info to share!

Lisa

I had given up ever connecting.

I will forward by email my death extract of Jane Chamberlain Bradley where Lydia's maiden name is indicated. I am remembering have come across other records marriages of other children that have referenced her maiden name as well. I also have a newspaper clipping from Vermontville Michigan recording Melissa's death.

I have not been successful in finding any records of death, but I suspect that much was ost in the Hull fire of 1900. My last record of nathaniel and Lydia is a census record about 1852.

I will follow up with some documents from my email account. susancourage@rogers.com.

Thak you again for posting.

Susan

Many thanks, Jerri, for taking the time and effort to search out this sad obituary notice and to post it online. I'm very appreciative! As an avid Chamberlain/lin genealogist (no relation to this family), I corresponded with Vonnie in particular in 2003 and again in 2006 - the Email address you have listed for her is the same as I have listed here. She is identified in the lineage I've created for her family here, as Yvonnie "Vonnie" Young Ernst or Ernest, born 1936, daughter of Harold Martin Young and Violet Elizabeth Chamberlin, with younger siblings named Robert Allen Young and Darlene Kay Young. You may wish to attempt to contact her by mail at her 2003 street address: 4221 Middle Ridge Rd., Newport, PA 17074.
For the benefit of other Chamberlin researchers, John Thomas Chamberlin was born 3 Feb 1893, probably in Sunbury, Northumberland Co., PA, who was married 1913/14 in New York, to Teresa Virginia Messimer, born 1900, PA, with 1 known child - Violet Elizabeth Chamberlin (1914-1980) as listed above. John Thomas Chamberlin is the 3rd of 12 children of William Frederick Chamberlain, born Jan 1867, PA, died 1948, probably Lewistown, Mifflin Co., PA, and his wife Annie Maria Knepp, born June 1871, died 1958, daughter of Solomon & Evanna Knepp. This couple, listed in the 1900 census in Sunbury Borough, Northampton Co., PA, and in the 1930 census in Lewistown, listed their parents as natives of Pennsylvania. Despite an exhaustive search of census data, primarily in Northumberland Co., PA (where numerous Chn families resided), I've not been able to trace the Chamberlin ancestry. Anyone interested in discussing this family in greater detail is invited to contact me, James B. Parker, at: jbparker@provide.net.

1935 Obit: John T. Chamberlin, Allentown, Pennsylvania

I am the RootsWeb obituary look-up volunteer for the Morning Call newspaper of Allentown, Pennsylvania. On May 1, 2005, someone named Vonnie, using the e-mail address y-me@pa.net, asked for the obituaries of his grandparents, John T. & Teresa Virginia (Messimer) Chamberlin, who died in the 1934/1935 time period. Since the index for that newspaper is still a work-in-progress, I only recently found John T. That obituary is listed below, in case it's of interest to anyone else. Or in case Vonnie keeps an eye on this board.
Jerri Burket

The inseparableness between husband and wife through more than a score of years followed Mr. and Mrs. John T. Chamberlin, of 1121 Allen street, into death and both will be buried at a double funeral Monday afternoon. Unable to face life without the companionship of his wife, Theresa Messimer Chamberlin, who died at the Haff hospital Wednesday night, Mr. Chamberlin, who was 45 years of age, ended his own life yesterday by means of inhaling carbon monoxide gas in the garage at the rear of the family residence. He was dead when discovered by his 21-year-old daughter Violet about 2.30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. All during their married life, Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlin had enjoyed the highest degree of companionship and the greatest of love for one another. When Mrs. Chamberlin was operated upon little more than a week ago, her husband was nearly driven to distraction, and when she died last Wednesday night, the shock was too great for him to bear. Yesterday morning he bade his daughter goodby, informing her he intended to motor out of town to visit a friend. She had expected him home by noon and went about preparing his noon-day meal. Her father failed to appear, however, and finally at about 2.30 she went to the garage to see whether he might have brought the automobile back and gone off somewhere afoot. Upon opening the garage door, Violet was confronted by a cloud of fumes emanating from the running motor, and her father, overcome by the fumes, seated in the car. She spread the alarm and medical aid was summoned. Mr. Chamberlin was declared dead and Coroner A. M. Peters, M.D., notified. Dr. Joseph Lieberman, deputy coroner, issued a certificate of death. Mr. Chamberlin was born at Lewistown, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Chamberlin. About eleven years ago, he, his wife and daughter came to this city and resided here since. He was a silk weaver by trade and as such was employed in the mill of the S. M. S. Silk company. He was a member of the Ebenezer Evangelical church. Besides his parents, who still reside at Lewistown, Mr. Chamberlin is survived by his daughter, Violet, two brothers, Victor and Billy Chamberlin, both of Lewistown, and five sisters, Mrs. Rosa Kandall, of New York City; Mrs. John Lytle, of Progress; Mrs. George Blair and Mrs. Elsie Cott, of Lewistown, and Helen, of New York City. The double funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock with services at the funeral home of E. B. Zimmerman, 818 Walnut Street, Rev. Paul R. Wert officiating. Interment will be made in the Arlington cemetery at Mickleys. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 o’clock.
[The Allentown Morning Call, Allentown, PA, Sunday, March 10, 1935, pages 5 & 7]

Hi, I'm new to Ancestry, and I'm currently using a free account, meaning I can not initiate contact with an existing member. I would love to contact Ancestry Member S_Courage, in regards to her post concerning Nathaniel Chamberlin, his wife Lydia Ferrin and their daughter Jane Chamberlin. I have been searching for a last name for this Lydia and I would love to see the death certificate of Jane Chamberlain, identifying her as a Ferrin and as Nathaniel's wife. I am a descendant of Nathaniel and Lydia and am continuing research on the Chamberlin family started 40 years ago by my great uncle Ed Chamberlin of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Look forward to hearing from anyone interested in this line of Chamberlins, you can also contact me at: cruevixen86@hotmail.com

Wendy

Re: John Count of TANKERVILLE, Castle, Normandy, France (and Chamberlains in General)

It's nice to hear from Ashley again, who is sincerely interested in learning more about the history of this Chamberlain (or Chamberlin) surname. For the benefit of all readers, I'll repeat here what has previously been published on the Internet and elsewhere (often to refute errors) - what is generally known by us Chamberlain genealogists, to facilitate your searching, and to preclude any misunderstanding, most hopefully. You can rely on the accuracy of the following comments!

1) BEWARE of Chamberlain (or Tankerville) information posted on the INTERNET - much of it is just plain wrong!!!
2) Many specific and accurate answers to Ashley's questions can be found in earlier postings online (since about 1996) in the Chamberlain, Chamberlin and Chamberland message boards or sites in Ancestry.com and in GenForum. I urge everyone to view them. I've answered thousands of queries on these sites through the years, often in an attempt to correct of clear up errors and misconceptions. These errors are like wildfire - they spread around and it is almost impossible to stampt them out, but I try!
3) Refer to the homepage for the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society. I was one of the co-founders of this society in 1996, together with several other gentlemen here in Michigan. This site provides authoritative information about the origins of the Chamberlain surname and its best known lines, including, for instance, actual formal lineages (Family Group Records which can be downloaded by the public) for the descendants of Henry the Blacksmith. Also, back issues of the society's 4X/year newsletter, The Chamberlain Key, are posted on this website for members' use. Articles published in this newsletter, through the years, have also addressed these matters in considerable detail - reading them is the very best way to learn more about this surname, but one must be a member of the society to access the back issues of the "Key."
4) As a very active amateur genealogist during my retirement years, I maintain here at my home in Michigan what is by far the largest Chamberlain files (actual lineages or partial lineages) available anywhere - readers are urged to continue to contact me, James B. Parker, with their queries at: jbparker@provide.net. Much more can be learned, of course, through networking with other WCGS members.
5) Henry "The Blacksmith" appeared in New England in about 1638, as Ashley said, but his origins (presumably in England) are completely unknown, despite very intensive research in parish and other records in various places in England where he most likely came from. One of the reasons for this failure might be that his age (born about 1592) precedes the available records in many parishes. Because he was a blacksmith - a tradesman - he was almost certainly of humble origin and unrelated (by blood) to the Tankervilles or other noble Chamberlain families. That's for sure.
6) Henry "The Shoemaker" (oft confused with "The Blacksmith") who returned to England with his family, had known children, but their descendants have never been traced (back in England). We simply don't know his ancestry. Perhaps one day we will run cross some living descendants.
7) The illustrious Tankerville family (their first known ancestor was called Tancred - a Viking lord in Normandy born about 800), over several generations, served the Dukes of Normandy, before and after the Conquest in 1066, and they did indeed come to England with William the Conqueror, with branches of this "Chamberlain" family later spreading throughout the British Isles (but very difficult to trace). A book has been published by the late Welton Chamberlain on this subject. So, I maintain a somewhat speculative lineage for them and their known descendants (from about 800 on down to the present day) here, and we are continuing to refine and expand this lineage as time goes by. Just a handful of living descendants are known, but we have yet to obtain DNA samples from any of the men who carry the Chamberlain or Tankerville surname, alas! So, we don't yet know the DNA "fingerprint" for the Tankerville line. Little or nothing has been done, as yet, to trace Tankervilles in France or elsewhere in Europe (e.g. in Sicily). Likewise, other "Chamberlain" lines who originate elsewhere in Europe - families who used this title as their surname - have received little attention to date, though we hope to learn more about them as time goes by.
8) DNA testing (of about 100 living Chamberlain male descendants so far - mostly in the States), absolutely PROVES that there are more than a dozen Chamberlain ancestral lines in the States and elsewhere who are completely and totally unrelated to one another. Only one of them, if any, could be a Tankerville line. The biggest, most prolific of these lines is that of Henry(1) the Blacksmith of Hingham & Hull, Massachusetts, one of the five original immigrant ancestors in early New England - the others being Richard(1) of Braintree who is completely unrelated to Henry(1) - the others being the brothers Edmund(1), Thomas(1) and William(1), who are completely unrelated to the other two. I'm descended from both Henry(1) and Richard(1), by the way, but I maintain lineages for the descendants of all five, of course. It has been said that about 85% of all Chamberlains (all spellings -- there are about 100 variant spellings of this name) in America (all of North and South America) descend from just these five. There is another big French Canadian line of the surname "Chamberland" which came directly from France centuries ago that we trace, and numerous smaller lines elsewhere in America (e.g. in Southern States), one or two of which are believed to be descended from the Tankervilles but this remains unproven. I attempt to trace ALL Ch'n's (all spellings) in America, using all available records and sources, such as LDS IGI data and census records. Another WCGS founder and expert researcher, Philip J. Chamberlain, attempts to trace all of the ancient "English Ancestries" for this surname in the U. K. - a formidable task, and I work on several of these English lines myself from time to time - such as that of Neville Chamberlain, and, of course, the Tankerville line. Philip also heads up the DNA project for the society and publishes charts listing all results to date, organized by family groups.
9) The Tankerville lineage does indeed contain other surnames, as you have noted, such as Earle, which we are investigating. Earle would be a case where a title became a surname in later generations. DNA has been made available for some of these surnames, which are believed to be of Tankerville descent.
10) Chamberlain is indeed a title - originally, evidently, the "Keeper of the Chamber" for a royal family. They kept royal records, served as tutors for the children and, in some cases, protected the royal treasure kept in the King's bedchamber! This title is still in use, I see, in Europe and elsewhere, for various purposes. So, we know that there were quite a number of "Chamberlains" in the early history of England and elsewhere in Europe - families who would have been distinguished or powerful in their own right, but most likely unrelated by blood to the royal or noble families they served and on whose estates they sometimes resided, but they had their own estates in most cases. More humble persons - servants, fiefs, yoeman, tradesmen, etc. - who served the "Lord of the Manor" on any given Chamberlain estate were most likely to adopt this surname for their own family, or a surname which denoted their trade or occupation. Prior to about 1500, such persons used only a given name such as "George" or "Peter" with a last name, if at all, which denoted their occupation - such as Charles Smith, or John Schoolmaster or Richard Tyler, or their place of residence. Royal and noble families (for whom records were usually kept) did usually have, in addition to a given name, also sometimes a separate surname - a title or surname which denoted their origins or place of residence or occupation. A name might be, for instance, Thomas Daniels de Anyers - a name drawn at random from my Parker genealogy. Thomas was the son of Piers (Peter) Daniels and Julia Newton, and was born in that unforgettable year of 1492, in Tabley, Cheshire, England. I haven't checked to see what "Anyers" denotes, but most like it is a place name. To summarize, most (almost all) of us Chamberlains (all variant spellings) descend from families of humble origins, for sure, and we are a motley collection of much more than a dozen ancient ancestral lines or families which are completely unrelated to one another. In most cases, it would be impossible to trace the ancestry before about 1500 or so.
11) Since Henry "The Blacksmith" was almost certainly of humble origins because of his trade, he would not have had a family crest, though his unknown ancesters almost certainly served a noble family of Chamberlains who did indeed have a crest. The Tankerville crest can be viewed in the WCGS website and copies of it can be obtained through various members of the society and elsewhere. I've seen it online from time to time.
12) The WCGS is the third large Chamberlain surname-based society of significance. The first was the Chamberlain Association of America (1898 - circa 1940), whose first President was the famous General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain of Civil War fame, and the second society had the same name (circa 1979 - circa 1993). We formed the WCGS after this second group (to which I belonged) became defunct. Many records and publications from these earlier organizations are known to exist (not all yet available to us) and are important and familiar "grist" for the lineages we create and maintain today. Surname-based genealogical societies don't generally exist in England, by the way, which hinders our research.

There - that is quite enough to answer, as briefly as I can, these frequently posed questions and some misunderstandings. I do hope this has been helpful!

Sincerely, James Baldwin Parker, Whitmore Lake, Michigan

Re: Ichabod Dean married Rebecca Chamberlin

Hello David. Please refer to my 24 Nov 2004 Ancestry.com Chamberlin Message Board reply to a query in that location, and my research notes below. Ichabod Dean was born, 19 Sep 1799, Dover, New Jersey, and died, 1 Nov 1872, probably in Bureau County, Illinois. His first wife, Rebecca Chamberlain was born Nov. 1804, probably New Jersey, and died about 1836 in Morris Co., NJ, with 5 children listed for them. Ichabod's second wife was Elizabeth Hammond, married, Feb. 1837, with no children listed for them in my records here, and there was a 3rd wife. My research notes for Ichabod state:

NOTES
Son of Jonathan & Hester (Fairchild) Dean. He married three times: 1) Rebecca Chamberlin, m. c1824; 2) Elizabeth Hammond, m. Feb/Mar 1837 with children Harriet b. 1841 NJ, and Ephraim b. 1842, Alexander, Delaware Co., NJ; 3) Asenath Dunn, m. 3 Jun 1868. LDS Ancestral File for this family submitted by Terry Dean Thedell, 6229 Hannon Ct., San Diego, CA 92117. Data also from Mary B. Spies who says Ichabod & Elizabeth bought and sold property in Berkshire Twp., Delaware Co,. NJ, moved West settling in Clairion Twp., Bureau Co,. IL in June 1856.
END OF NOTES

My research notes for Rebecca:
NOTES
They had 5 children before her death. Data for this family from Chamberlain Chain, Vol. 5, p. 25; Vol. 9, p. 26; Vol. 18, p. 26, queries submitted by Mary B. Spies, 101 E. Hawthorne, Hawthorne Manor, Box 27, Spokane, WA 99218-1463. She provided the birthplace for Rebecca's first child. LDS Ancestral File, IGI record, and PRF for this couple do not identify Rebecca's parents.
See also two Ancestry.com Chamberlin Message Board postings, dated 24 Nov 2004, and again 19 Oct & 4 Nov 2006, by Sandie Simpson [Email: beanlesandie@hotmail.com ], asking about the ancestry of this Rebecca Chamberlin, born 1803, Jefferson, Morris Co., NY, who married Ichabod Dean in 1824. JBP's 24 Nov 2004 Ancestry.com response, says she is most likely related somehow to the family of Benjamin & Martha "Patty" (Byram) Chamberlain of Sussex Co., NJ, descendants of William(1) Chamberlain, possibly mentioned in the A.
Re: Mary J. Chamberlin (married name)

This is Mary J. Turner, born May 1862, Ohio, perhaps in London, Madison Co., died after 1900, parents unknown. She was married to Irwin/Ervin Chamberlin, 6 Apr 1880 in Scioto Co., OH, the son of Anson C. Chamberlin and Almira S. "Philo" Weaver - a descendant of Henry(1) Chamberlin, the oldest of the original five immigrant Ch'n ancestors in early New England, according to the records of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society. IGI records list the marriage; 9 known children. Irwin/Ervin was born 8 Nov 1858, Vernon Twp., Scioto Co., OH and died 24 Feb 1919. Refer to 21 Mar 2005 Ancestry.com Chamberlin Message board posting by descendant Julie Graham, Email: bearppbj@aol.com, who has a photo of Almira Elizabeth Chamberlin, daughter of Irwin and Mary Jane (Finney) Chamberlin which suggests that Mary Jane had a different surname than shown in my records here. Here is the 1900 Census record which shows that her father's origins are unknown and that her mother was a native of Ohio.
- 1900 Census, Porter, Scioto Co., OH, p. 148B, #103/103, 9 Jun 1900, Irvin Chamberlin, head, age 41, b.
Re: Gilbert Chamberlain/Chamberlin b. 1880 Grand Rapids Michigan

This is Gilbert J. "Bert" Chamberlin (he signed it Chamberlin in his Draft Registration record, but his father may have preferred the spelling of Chamberlain), born 3 Apr 1880, Green, Mecosta Co., MI, d. 17 Sep 1951, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH, whose wife was Lillie Alma Leroy, b. 29 Nov 1883, OH, d. 1 Jan 1935, Cincinnati, OH - with 11 children as you have them listed. He is one of eight known children of James D.(8) Chamberlain, b. Nov 1839, OH, died after 1910, perhaps Elida Village, German Twp., Allen Co., OH (where he was living in 1910) and his wife Lucy (surname unknown), born about 1843, OH, died before 1900. The ancestral line of descent is listed here as: Godfrey(7) Chamberlin (ca1797-after 1870); Godfrey(6) (1755-1828); Col. Henry(5) (1725-1781); John(4) (ca1687-1739); Henry(3) (1659-1689); John(2) (ca1626-1666); Henry(1) (ca1592-1674) - the oldest of the five earliest Ch'n immigrant ancestors in early New England. The first 8 generations of this family are listed in very detailed Family Group Records for each generation prepared by the late genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., of Salt Lake City, on file and accessible to the public in the website of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society - I urge you to obtain copies of them there. Also, a very nicely done, detailed lineage for Gilbert and other members of his family can be viewed in the Ancestry.com "Chamberlin, Cooley, Reilman Family Tree" which I just now used to update my records for this family here. Ancestry.com contains photos and other documents including Gilbert's death certificate, and the WWI Draft Registration record you cited. Numerous census records are also available in Ancestry.com. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail. James B.
