We are still searching for information on Mary Champe Keys' husband Samuel Keys 1797 - 1845 IN. We believe that he served in the War of 1812 and is of Irish descent. However, we can not prove this and are still trying to fine out the names of his parents.

Mary Champe Keys was born in 1797 VA - 1845 Warren Co. IN. She was the sister of your William Champe.

Your William's other sister Amelia Champe Keys married a William Keys. Perhaps William and Samuel were brothers.

CAN YOU HELP ?

Hi - I am also looking for the same people. Have you had any success so far? I will be happy to share what I have been looking into if you would like to answer me on Ancestry.Com since I see we are both on line there. How do you tie into the Champ family? Perhaps we can share more information.

Maddy

Hi I started a family search and my fathers mother's maiden name was Champ. She was born about 1890 in London England. She married John Hurren, also from London. They had two sons, one died at an early age and the other was my dad. His name was Philip Walter Hurren. All I really know about my grandfather is that he was in the military and I'm not sure when he died.
My dad did tell me that his mother May Lilian Champ was of French heritage
I don't know if that helps any....sorry I'm still looking myself :) If you like you can email me at abull24@hotmail.com ....Thanks, Lyn

Lewis, I live in West Virginia and my family name was originally "Champe". From some research I have done only some of my ancestors spelled it with the "e" on the end. Seargent Major John Champe was a soldier under General George Washington sent to act as a traitor to capture Benedict Arnold. After a failed mission Washington granted him a discharge and gave him property in WV which is now a National Park area and is my family's home place. My father has 6 more siblings in his family and my grandfather had 16 children in his family.

Ruler Champ of Nicholas Co, WV

Who out there has Ruler Champ in their line? SortedByName.com has his birthdate as 3/31/1895 s/o Flem & Sallie J. Champ, Nicholas Co, WV. The birthdate seems right, since he was a friend of my grandfather. I have several postcards and photo of Ruler from abt 1913-15 that my Grandpa saved. Postmarks are from Mount Nebo and Summersville - I believe Ruler may have lived in Mt. Nebo and attended an "Institute" (high school/trade school?) in Summersville.

Dorothy J. Parillo, 93, passed away peacefully with her family by her side Sunday morning, June 19, 2011, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Warren, Ohio.

She was born on Feb. 5, 1918, in Youngstown, Ohio the daughter of the late Dominic and Jennie (Leonelli) Champ. Dorothy was the last surviving child of the Champ family.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Antoinette Massaro, Rose DelFratte, Samuel, Joseph and Daniel Champ, Annabelle Tucci, Dominic Champ Jr., and her late husband, Joseph E. Parillo.

She was a 1936 graduate of The Rayen School and later went on to marry Joseph E.
Re: Logan Mills CHAMP/ Fannie HOWARD

Barbara,

Please send me your contact information.

I am wondering if I could get some help looking up info about my great grandfather.
Logan Mills Champ
born Feb 25, 1886 in Hornersville, Dunklin, Missouri, USA passed Sept 18, 1936
At the advice from a doctor, the family left their Home in 1934: Big Lake, Mississippi, Arkansas and moved to Hanford or Corcoran, Ca to a sanitarium for treatment for consumption (tb). He fought the disease for 2 years before he died.

He was buried old in Old Hanford Cemetery LOT 719, GRAVE 7 by the Peoples Funeral Chapel then moved from grave #3 to grave #7
I called the Hanford Cemetery and they showed a Holeman M Champ
born Feb 25, 1886 passed Sept 18, 1936 buried old in Old Hanford Cemetery
with a Woodsman of the World tree stump monument lot 719, grave 7
We have pictures now that shows that Logan had a tree stump grave marker with his picture on it , so we assume Holeman & Logan are the same person.

I can't find who his parents or siblings were. He is said to be an orphan with one brother who died at a young age and Logan had a Half sister is Gimlu from Manila Arkansas, who was married to Leonard Parker. Sister-in-law was Lula "Lulu" Mae Howard who married Robert Brown who had 3 children that died before 1922 (not still born) Someone said Logan was an orphan but might have had a brother – no name- and a half sister Gimlu. If his father was a Champ he had to be alive up to the time of conception which was the end of June 1885, because Logan was born 25 Feb 1886. In 1885, he would have been bet 18-50 years old. So I need to find a Champ who was born bet 1835-1867 and died after June 1885. Since Logan was born in Hornersville, Dunklin, Missouri, USA and was in the same location in the 1900 census, I think his father would have died there. The same goes for his mother accept she was alive up to his birth, maybe she died in childbirth.

There is no soc sec death index listing for him,. I found a different Logan Champ in soc sec death index, who died in 1965 in Stanislaus County, but it's the wrong person.

Logan and Fannie Howard were married the 9th of Dec, 1910 in Mississippi County, Arkansas.
In Ar & Mo, Logan was a logger and a member of the Woodsmen of the World. Fannie received his pension after he died.

I asked the people in the Historical & Genealogy Room at the Fresno Library see where they are mentioned in the "They Shall Not Be Forgotten - Pioneers of Kings County, California," Bob Athey, self-published 3 volume set,? They replied with:
They Shall Not Be Forgotten Pioneers of Kings County, CA
Last Name First Death Date Cem Birth Blk Sec Record # Cem
Champ, Holeman M. 1936Sep18 H 1886Feb25 OLD 719 23277 H
MI: Woodsman of the World
Cemetery H=Hanford Cemeteries Old & New
MI= Monument Inscription
This is the only Champ mentioned.

I don't know why it shows his name being Holeman!
1900 CENSUS Dunklin Co, Missouri, South part of Clay Township, City of Hornersville
Logan Champ
In this census, Logan is 14 years old and resides as a boarder on the farm of Tirapie Evenson age 65 born in Oct 1835 number of farm schedule 12
He Worked as a Day Laborer for 2 years as of June 1, 1900

1910 United States Federal Census
Census
View Image
Name: Logan Champ
Birth: abt 1888 - location
Residence: 1910 - city, Dunklin, Missouri

AncestryLibrary. com - World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
Name: Logan Mills Champ
City: Not Stated
County: Mississippi
State: Arkansas
Birth Date: 25 Jan 1886
Race: White
Roll: 1530561
DraftBoard: 0
Age: 33
Occupation: Self Employed Farmer
Nearest Relative: Fannie Champ
Height/Build: Tall/Slender
Color of Eyes/Hair:
Signature: View Image

AncestryLibrary. com - 1920 United States Federal Census 1920
Name: Loge Champ [Logan Champ] [Loyce Champ]
Home in 1920: Big Lake, Mississippi, Arkansas
Age: 29 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1891
[abt 1893]
Birthplace: Missouri
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Nannie
Father's Birth Place: Missouri
Mother's Birth Place: United States of America
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Image: 607
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Loge Champ 29
Nannie Champ 28
Edgar N Champ 4

Name: Nannie Champ
[Fannie Champ]
Home in 1920: Big Lake, Mississippi, Arkansas
Age: 28 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892
Birthplace: Arkansas
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Spouse's Name: Loge

AncestryLibrary.com - 1930 United States Federal Census 1930 United States
Name: Fannie Champ
Home in 1930: Big Lake, Mississippi, Arkansas
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1890
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Spouse's Name: Logan
Race: White
Occupation:
Education:
Military service:
Rent/home value:
Age at first marriage:
Parents' birthplace:
Neighbors:
Household Members:
Name Age Relationship to Head
Logan Champ 42 Head
Fannie Champ 40 Wife
Vernon Champ 14 Son
Richard Champ 8 Son
Louise Champ 4 1/12 Daughter
Sherman Champ	1 1/12 Son
Hallie Spray 74 Aunt
"Mary Alice Renfrow" married to John Spray & Rufus Howard Brother to Monroe Howard

AncestryLibrary. com - California Death Index, 1940-1997
Name: Fannie Champ
[Fannie Howard]
Social Security #:0
Sex: FEMALE
Birth Date: 16 May 1889
Birthplace: Tennessee
Death Date: 31 Aug 1958
Death Place: Stanislaus
Mother's Maiden Name: Winfar
FATHER'S SURNAME: Howard

In the 1900 Census, there is a Grover Champ age 11 born circa 1888 in Missouri. living in Madison, Indiana.

In the 1910 census there is a Grover Champ, age 22 living in in Neal Township (5 mi. n/w of Manilla), Mississippi Co, Ar with his wife Mahala age 18 and daughter Beulah age 1-1/2.

By the 1920 census, Grover, age 32, and family have moved to Dunklin County, Missouri.

Its a long-shot theory, but Could Grover Champ have been a younger brother living in the same county Logan married? Logan Champ, age 19, born Illinois.
The father is listed as R. (H. or K or W.) Champ, born Illinois.
There is also an Ashley (male) Champ, age 47 living near the family.
Going to the 1860 census of Illinois I find Ashel Champ in Jefferson County living near a Robert Champ, both age 27, living in Mount Vernon, Il. Ashel married Mary Phillips Sep 28, 1879 in Dunklin, Mo.

Is the M. Logan Champ the father?
The 1880 census shows M. Frances Champ as a sister to M. Champ & Logan M Champ).
Did they all have M as a middle name?

I checked Dunklin County marriages and there are a few Champ marriages from 1873-1881.
Charles Edward Whitney & Monty Champ were married on Nov. 9, 1892 in Dunklin County, Missouri.
the marriage certificate, which is very hard to read, but, it has Charles Edward Whitney listed as C.E. Whitney and Monty as (what looks like) R.L. M. Champ. But, the family knew her name to be Monty. They were married by a Justice of the Peace. They weren't married very many years. She died a young woman. I don't have any other info about her except that she was his first wife. He married 2 more times after her.

Logan & Fannie worked on Caldwell Farm.

only Caldwell in same voting district

1930
Raymond Caldwell Big Lake, Mississippi, AR abt 1875 Arkansas Head
Elsie Caldwell abt 1877 Wife
Florene Caldwell abt 1918 Daughter
Ethel Caldwell abt 1921 Daughter

Thank you for the information on William. I have recently become a member of the DAR through William's sister Mary Champe Keys.
Mary Champe Keys b. approximately 1797/98 VA. Later lived Pickaway Co. OH - d. about 1845 - Buried Pine Township, Warren Co. IN. Mary was missing from 1840 Census or placed in wrong column. However, in 1847, for the first time, she is referred to in John Champe's Pension Records as the late Mary Champe Keys. Married to Samuel Keys b. 1797 VA - d. Nov. 1845, buried Pine Township, Warren Co. IN. Samuel served as a soldier in War 1812 They married Jan 17, 1820 Chillicothe, Ross , Oh. The family migrated in <1836 to Warren and Benton Co. IN. Pension states that Mary Champe (Keys) was living in Pickaway Co. Ohio in 1818. Marriage record confirms that Mary was married in an adjacent County. They had seven known children.
QUESTION: WHO ARE SAMUEL KEYS' PARENTS ? Do you have any clues.

Tnx for sharing. I've also learned a great deal about William Champ since my initial posting in this thread.

William served during the War of 1812. On 28 July 1813, William Champ enlisted as a Private in Captain Robert Reed's Company of the Ohio Militia. He mustered out only six weeks later, on 06 Sept 1813. His service record at the National Archives also provides third-party documentation of William's marriage to Rebecca Reed in Pickaway Co., Ohio (19 April 1821), and the fact that he later lived at Trivoli, Peoria Co., Illinois. After William's death in 1875, Rebecca moved to the town of Peoria, where she lived until her death in 1878.

William Champ is buried at Penn Ridge Cemetery near Trivoli. His gravestone, badly weathered, reveals his name when viewed in good light. Supposedly Rebecca is also buried at Penn Ridge, but during my visit there last September I was unable to find a marker for her.

Perhaps noteworthy is the name of Captain Robert Reed. It's possible, even likely, that Robert Reed was related to Rebecca Reed. I haven't pursued that thread yet.

Getting back to the original question for a moment: William Champ's pension application record shows that he received Bounty Lands for his service. The actual text on the handwritten form, in the "Bounty Lands" section: " 65457 - 40 - '50 " and (next line) " 38095 - 120 - '55 ". My interpretation of these entries is "Warrant No. -- Acres -- Year." So pursuant to Warrant #65457, he received 40 acres in 1850, and on Warrant #38095 another 120 acres in 1855. As I say, this is my interpretation; I have been unable to locate microfilmed copies of Bounty Land Warrants with numbers this high. We do know that William had moved to Illinois by 1850; he was in Stark County, Ill for the census. My hope is that this lead will take us to the actual parcels of land where William and Rebecca lived in Illinois. [Image of this record attached]

William and Rebecca's daughter Mary Ann (b. 1830) married Joseph Glaze in 1854 at Stark, Ill.; this was Joseph's second marriage. They had ten children. In the spring or summer of 1879, the Glaze family moved to Gibbon, Nebraska where they took several homesteads. Their daughter Lillie (or Lillia) married Charles Allen Davenport in October of 1879. Their first child, my grandfather, was born 15 January 1881.

Although I have no direct, known connection with the Dorset Champs, I have been doing a one name study of the name for several years and have compiled several trees of the English branches. I would welcome any information/copy of any trees that you may have for comparison purposes and to ensure my information is correct.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Lewis Sale

I have an extensive family tree drawn up in the 193o's that shows a large number of Champs in the Bridport area and I am aware of their connection with the Rev Rooker of the Barrack St Chapel, his family history and origins in 16C Stafordshire.

If you are interested in this info please contact me.

Peter Williams

Hello Lewis,

I have a connection to the Champ Surname through my Great-Grandmother. I have been doing Gnealogy research on all areas of my family since 2006. A lot of the info isn't on Ancstery yet. I am American, but living in Germany. The Champ story from my side starts with my Third Great-Grandfather Charles Champ who came from France via England. I think he was perhaps born in England, but maybe his parents came from France after the time of Napoleon. Anyway, I have some death records and written Family Histories. I am still working on obtaining Marriage and Birth Records.

Kevin

Hi Roux,

I am glad you have been able to work on William's line since 2007. That's interesting that we share great great grandparents.

I attach one picture which I have of Ethel & her children taken in Abingdon in 1915. Ada is the child on the left, with Alexander at the front and Patience, my grandmother, on the right. I hope the picture comes over, it is my first time at sending an attachment!

I would appreciate access to your tree, although I have a lot of information,I am especially interested in the Prior family going back beyond James & Fanny Prior, also the Greens, back from Edwin & Sarah (nee Prior).

Regards S
