William Champ (son of Sgt. Maj. John Champe)

William Champ, son of John Champe (the Sergeant Major in Lee's cavalry) eventually settled in Illinois sometime between 1840 and 1850. Prior to that he lived in Ohio. His mother Phoebe (Barnard?) Champe lived with him at least from 1830 to 1840 and probably earlier in 1820.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15698621/person/300151539/med...

William Champ served in the War of 1812. He was a Private in Capt. Robert Reed's company of the Ohio Militia. I suspect but have not proven that this same Robert Reed was the father of William's wife, Rebecca Reed, whom he married in 1821. The Pension Record for William provides clues into his life after the War of 1812.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15698621/person/300151539/med...

William received two Warrants for Bounty Lands pursuant to his service in the War of 1812. He did not actually claim the land for either warrant, but assigned both to others. In other words, he sold them. Warrant No. 38095 was assigned to George F. Shyder, who claimed 120 acres of land in Cass County, Nebraska. Warrant No. 65457 was assigned by William to George Keel, who claimed 41.62 acres of land in Peoria County, Illinois.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15698621/person/300151539/med...

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/15698621/person/300151539/med...

I am aware that the marriage record indicates Kearby, but I found that there was a common mis-reading from Kearly (the name the earliest Kerleys in KY used). Also used in tax and census records was Kirtly, Kirby, Karly, etc..

Since my John Kearley/Kerley married Nancy Boone Green in 1816, whereas the Sarah Champ marriage was in 1807, some evidence that Sarah Champ died would be necessary to allow her link to John Kerley. There are several early deeds, but none which show the names John & Sarah Kerley.

Thanks for your observation. I'll keep looking.
Jim

I was a little too quick on the send button with that last. In this petition, Phoebe Champe very specifically tells the Congress how many children she had with John Champe (at least those surviving) and gives their names and the spouses of those who were married at the time.

Quoting:
The following are the names of her children with
those of the places where they reside (to wit) Eleanor [not legible] man, late Eleanor Champe, intermarried with Jacob Hartman, Amelia Keys late Amelia Champe, intermarried with
William Keys, William Champe and Mary Champe reside in Pickaway County in the State of Ohio. John Champ who resides in Franklin County Ohio. Susannah Willfong late Susannah Champe, intermarried with David Willfong in Ross County in the same state and Nathaniel Champe who resides at Detroit.

Phebe Champe - 1818 Petition to Congress

Recently, another of our Champe descendant/researchers emailed me a copy of Phebe Champe's 1818 petition to the United States Congress, in which she asks for a pension for herself and a land grant for the children of Sergeant Major John Champe.

I'm not 100% certain of it, but I think this may have been the first time she petitioned the Congress to fulfill the promises made to John Champe. At any rate, it's the earliest I'm aware of.

Phoebe's petition is dated Dec 15, 1818. The Congress made short work of it; the House Journal for Feb 6, 1819 published a report of the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions, and the decision of the House: "That it is inexpedient to grant pensions to widows of deceased revolutionary officers, who were not killed in battle."

It took another 20 years of petitioning and pleading to gain a pension for Phoebe Champe.

The images of the original petition (ZIP file containing 2 JPGs) can be found at:
http://home.comcast.net/~w7apd/public/genealogy/Phebe_Champe...

And my transcript of the petition (PDF) is at:
http://home.comcast.net/~w7apd/public/genealogy/Phebe_Champe...

This doesn't present anything new, but may be of use to those wanting to follow the trail of our fascinating forebears.

--Alan

Thanks for reply. My John Kearly was born in Fayette Co., KY in 1788, later reared in Madison Co., KY. His wife, Lucy Boone, was born in KY in 1792. Neither had direct link to SC, but it is possible through their parents. Lucy's father, Squire Boone, has birth 1760 in SC, but moving later with family to KY. Squire Boone was nephew to Daniel Boone. John Kearly/Kerley was the son of William Kearly and Nancy Rodebaugh. I have not been able to find where William and Nancy came from, but most of his peers came through the Carolinas through one path or the other. Does any of this fit?

Hello,

It's been so long since I have delved into my Champe records, and once you take your nose out of it, it all seems foreign till you get back into it but...
I do seem to recall an Edward Carter. The one I am remembering was a drunk. His drinking was such a problem that the town folk ended up tar and feathering him. I believe they even dug a "grave" and placed him in it and covered him with 'boards?' He awoke from his stupor and behaved himself for awhile, and ended up quitely leaving town. There was mention of a wife and childen but I don't think there was any names mentioned, just that he made life miserable for them.
I work long hours and it has been difficult to get myself back into the Champe geneology, but if I can find time this weekend I will see what else I can dig up for you.

Regards,
Brenda

Here is some additonal information:

According to the Richmond County, Virginia Order Book, Thomas Reyley died before the Richmond County Court session of February 7, 1694/95 where it was ordered that John Landman officate as Constable for the ensuing year in the room and precinct of Thomas Reyly deced. (Richmond County Orders Bk 2).

Thomas Reyley's last will and testament was presented for probate to the Richmond County Court on June 5, 1695 (Richmond County Orders Bk 2, p56) by his Widow, relict and Executrix, Elizabeth Reyly.

By August 9, 1695, Elizabeth had married John Champ; and at the Richmond County Court held on that date, the Court granted non-suit to John Champ as Marrying Elizabeth Reyly against William Sisson (Richmond County Orders Bk#2 p79).

This action had previously been brought against Elizabeth's husband, Thomas Reyley, prior to his death (see Richmond County Orders Bk #2 p25).

I just happened to stumble across your query of 29 Jan 2004 regarding Lafayette Champe and Mary Ann Malin.
I believe that Lafe's parents were:
George Champe (abt 1756 - abt 1831) and his second wife, Jane Welch (abt 1795 - 1865 in Dublin, IN).

This George was a brother of the Sgt. Maj. John Champe, of Revolutionary War fame.

I have most of the descendants of Lafe's brother, Dr. George Washington Champe. Do you have more about the descendants of Lafe?
I have located a deposition made by Phebe Champe wife of Sgt. Major John Champe that she gave in 1828 to a Justice of the Peace in her quest of applying for his pension. Also included is a depostion made by William Champe brother of Sgt. John., uncle to William son of Sgt.
Dear Sheri, if there are some papers that shed light on the early Champe families,a sizable circle of frustrated Champe researchers would love to read about them. Who knowns the real story of John Champe of Westmoreland Co., VA and the family he may had had with Mary Carter?

And the offspring of his brother, William? One day maybe the blanks will be filled in.

Regards, Bob B.

Hey Sheri!!

My apologies on confusing Mary's last name...for some reason I had Taylor on my mind when I posted. I think because dad had a very good friend named Charley Taylor a few years back.
I so regret never getting into our family tree years ago while Mary was still able to answer "Champe" questions for me. She was so thorough in her researches especially for the 70's when the computer age wasn't at her fingertips. Imagine what she could do today!!
Do me a favor...next time your home...see if there are any loose papers in the geneology records of the Champe's. I have the family book that Mary made for RM and dad, but the earlier trees are incorrect due to the fact she based it on the "Ida Mae Judy" book where she (Ida) confused the Sgt. and his father. I'm interested in newsletters in particular she got from the Partridge/Champe Family out of Texas.
I'd love to get Mimi involved in this Champe hunt because she is right there in the area that most of the Champe's migrated to and could easily obtain alot of records to help solve this John Champe puzzle.
Again sorry for the Taylor/Hall confusion, dont know what I was thinking.... Must be gettin' old ; )
I agree, Mary was a great geneologist who had a love for family and left us a treasure trove of family history!!

Keep in touch cuz,
Brenda

The James Burn that married Catherine Champe on October 14, 1748 was a James Byrne, son of Thomas Byrne and Martha of Innistioque Parish, Kilkenny County, Ireland in 1718. Have much information on this line. James's uncle George Byrne was the noted surveyer who taught George Washington the art. The Washington, Byrne and Champe families lived in the same vicinity on Powell Creek.

Hopes this helps...Have much info on the Byrne line.
Just an added footnote to this post. I have a Champe newsletter by the Partridge Family of Texas in 1979 (relation to the Champe's). A Mrs.Don M. Chapton nee Betty Champ (Golda Eliz.) had written to say she got stuck with parents of Great Granfather Hermus Champ. (He had a brother called SUD) & his mother a Miss (ELIZ.???) MAYFIELD, who 'Family' knowledge said died when her son or shortly afterward in Kentucky. John L. Champe born 1782 (25 years old)
Hermus Champ was born 1807. Tenn. Census 1830 & 1850 shows him married to Nancy Benton Childress & their children in Bolivar Tenn. keeping a hotel. Some of Hermus Champ children moved to Louisanna.
She mentions John Hermus Champe her grandfather served in the War between the States and was killed on a bear hunt on St. Francis River in Ark. in 1872
This is the newsletter I sent you along with the Judy book.
Regards,
Brenda

CHAMPE of Loudoun Co., VA

Raylene, I am trying to tie the Champs of Garrard/Madison Co., KY and the Bourbon Co., KY Champs to your line of Champes who I can trace back to Loudoun Co., VA, before the Revolutionary War.

I am no expert on this, but what I have shows John Champe (b. abt 1720, d. 1814) married Elizabeth Anne Sewell and they were the parents of your Elizabeth Ann Champe who married Terrance Popejoy. They were also parents of Sgt. Major John Champe, the Revolutionary War "double agent" sent by Washington to capture Benedict Arnold (the traitor). I have the Mary Champ who married John Popejoy as the daughter of Sgt. Major John Champe and his third wife, Phebe Susan Barnard.

How does that go with your records?
I have not yet identified the links between these three Champe-Champ lines but I "know" it is there waiting to be found.
PS: My Jadwin side (from MD) has a Tatman connection. My email is rjbal@bol.net.in.
Regards, RJB.
CHAMPE of Loudoun Co., VA

First, let me repeat, I am no expert on this family. Wish I were. What I have is mostly from on-line exhanges. You may know much more than I do. My effort with the Loudoun family is to see if I could identify the tie to Thomas Champ of Bourbon County, KY and the William Champ of Garrard/Madison Cos., KY both of whom seem to have connections to the Loudoun Champes.

Second, there are so many Johns in this family that it is easy to get them confused. This is particularly true using the Sr, Jr, suffixes to distinguish them. That is why I keep calling one the Sgt. Major.

Next, I agree, a Mary born in 1758 could not be the daughter of Sgt. Major John Champe. So, she might be an aunt or an overlaping cousin. Parents? That is a tough one. This family is so poorly documented that we are groping in the semi-dark except for one or two family groups.

Agree, though, that it is possible Mary was a daughter of Sgt. Major John's uncle, Thomas. (This Thomas may be the Thomas Champe listed in the 1790 Federal Census in Hampshire County VA with "12 white" in the household.)

Re the pension, my records show the Sgt. Major never applied for a pension. They indicate his widow did, many years later, and it was granted about 1831. That appears to be when his story came out in Congressional hearings. Myth? Don't know.

As for a William Champe also being a Revolutionary soldier, I have read that, too. I asked the DAR if they could verify his service, and the answer was there was only one Champe among the patriots: Sgt. Major John, "the spie." William's descendants had claimed through him and it was granted as he was John's son. That is what the DAR look-up lady wrote me, in any event.

Now, who has a hint about the Bourbon and Garrard Co., KY pioneer Champs, Thomas and William. I have to solve this pretty soon...I am running out of years.

Warm Regards. RJB. rjbal@bol.net.in
Popejoys and Champes

I just posted a piece you might look out. Can't say it is 100% sound, but is best I have right now. Shows Elizabeth Ann Champe, d/o John and Elizabeth Ann Sewell Champe as wife of Tarrants Popejoy.

Looks like other Champe in Popejoy marriage was d/o her brother, Sgt. Major John, and thus her niece. "Mary Ann b. 1789 m. John Popejoy (brother of Tarrants Popejoy who married Elizabeth Ann Champe, d/o John and Elizabeth Sewell Champe?), Hampshire Co., WV; As John Popejoy was reportedly born in 1758, five years after his brother, the age difference of bride and groom rather wide."

I have, as I say, no real sense that this formulation is correct, but maybe it will help smoke out a truer picture.

Lafeete, Lafayette, Delufaith Champe

I have the impression that Lafayette Champe, son of George Champe, b. abt 1756, of the Loudoun Co., Champes and his second wife, Jane Welch, who is also known as Laf or Lafa in the family per GW Champe history with Nancy Dockins, is also the person listed as "Delufaith" in some records...Delufaith being a corruption of "de la Fayette." Possible?

And I agree with Nancy that it looks like your Lafeete in Knoxville, TN, may have a tie to or be the Lafayette, brother of George Washington Champe, b. 1830. GW Champe wrote that his oldest brother, Amos K was buried in Knoxville. He also wrote that brother Lafayette was living in Garnett, Kansas, in 1897.

John Champe, b. 1725, m. (1) Sewell ?(2) Dewitt

Does anyone know if John Champe, b. abt. 1725, in Loudoun Co., died abt. 1814, married to Elizabeth Ann Sewell, parents of Sgt. Major John Champe, b. abt. 1752, did in fact marry a second time to a Sarah Dewitt (or some other wife) and had:
Amelia m. William Keys
Margaret Elizabeth m. John Kykendall
Thomas m. Sarah Shreve
John m. Sarah E. Borrer (Borror)
These descendants were located in the Pendelton Co. area of (today) WV.

Does anyone have any info to support this or to show it to be erroneous?

Nancy Agnes Champe

Yesterday I posted a rough piece for you and others to look out and point out where it is wrong. From what has been given me, the John Champe, abt 1722-1814, married first Elizabeth Ann Sewell and second, according to handwritten notes found in WV Univ. Library recently, Sarah Dewitt.

I mention this as the "latest theory."
Nancy Agnes is in there, but not as dau. of Sarah Dewitt.

I would call you, but live on other side of the world, literally.

Best regards,

Champs: Nancy Agnes, Susannah, Amelia

Well, I don't live in the US so we can't very well talk, but this system is light years ahead of where we were a decade ago.

1) Re Nancy Agnes...she would be the one sometimes shown as just "Agnes," who married Sarver om
2) I have only two candidates in that period:
a)John, who died in 1814, father of the Sgt. Major from his first marriage. Agnes and Susannah would be from the second marriage to Sarah Dewitt, BUT the manuscript doesn't have them as daughters. So that leaves b) John, the Sgt. Major, b. 1752, d. abt 1799, it seems, and mother would be Phebe Barnard.
If I were you, I would pursue this line to see if there is a geographical match.

3) As I go over notes, it looks like John, d. 1814 and his second wife Sarah Dewitt (?) were the parents of an Amelia who married a Keys. I believe I had that wrong in the outline.

Keep puzzling it out. We'll get it sooner or later...maybe.
