My husband comes from the line of Charles Chancy, whose ancestor went from France to England with William the Conquerer in the 1000s. Have any of you taken the dna test? Thats how we found our lineage. There are several Chancy/Chancey/Chauncey lines which we have proven through dna testing are not related. I can give you a discount as a member of our society, Collin County (TX) Genealogy Society.

Elizabeth Chancey/Chauncy married Arthur A. Pinner 1875

Hello everyone,

I'm currently digging for my second g-grandmother, Elizabeth Chauncy/Chancey who married my father's maternal great-grandfather, Arthur A. Pinner. I was told she was the daughter of Nancy Moody. I thought I had this nailed down but now I'm not so sure. The problem is that my Elizabeth was always called Eliabeth GORE by my father's family, so all his notes reflect that. I could find absolutely nothing on her for 10 years now.

In 2008 I got a letter from a Pinner researcher that says her name was not Gore, but Chauncy, and she was the daughter of Nancy Moody Chauncy Warner. Evidently Nancy was born a Moody, married a Chauncy (who died young) and after having Elizabeth and a few other children, married antoher man named Warner. On the death record for one of Elizabeth' children, George, his mother's name is listed as "Warner", which is the only other evidence I can find of the Warner connection for Elizabeth's mother Nancy. That led me to believe the info I recieved was correct about Nancy and Elizabeth. However, I still had no info on Nancy's husband. I only had one name, Jeremiah Moody, who was Elizabeth's uncle and Nancy's brother.

So I finally found a family that contained Nancy and Jeremiah Moody and lo and behold, that Nancy Moody was listed as having married one Christopher Chancey (this coming from LDS I was happy, but cautious and looking for confirmation elsewhere). Only there was no more info on Christopher. So now I have Chauncy and Chancey as possibles for Elizabeth's maiden name.

Just last night I discovered some posts here that suggest that a Christopher Chancey married Nancy RAULERSON at the same time frame I'm looking at in Georgia. I thoguht little of it---must be a different Chancey, just happens to be in the same time, in the same place in Georgia I was looking for. But then the children listed matched with what I had for Christopher Chancy and Nancy Moody!

Can anyone out there there clear this up? Do I have the same Nancy and children, only the wrong last name (again??)? This branch is one of my brick walls I've been working on for a decade now and I can almost taste the solution...it's got to be close but I'm just not seeing it.

Here's my info such as it is:
1-Christopher CHANCY (1829-3 March 1863)
+Nancy MOODY (1832-October 1915)
. . . . 2-William Riley CHANCY (1858-4 November 1868)
. . . . 2-Jeremiah CHANCY (1858-25 November 1868)
. . . . 2-Isabel CHANCY (1858-6 August 1884)
. . . . 2-Elizabeth CHANCY (1859-after 1889)
. . . . +Arthur A. PINNER (1849-)
. . . . . . . . 3-Anna PINNER (-May 1969)
. . . . . . . . 3-Erastus PINNER (27 November 1879-1955)
. . . . . . . . 3-William PINNER (31 May 1881-1920)
. . . . . . . . 3-Limuel PINNER (5 August 1885-1957)
. . . . . . . . 3-Jesse PINNER (19 November 1887-1952)
. . . . . . . . 3-George PINNER (1 November 1889-24 March 1920)

Limuel Pinner was my great-grandfather. His daughter Josephine Elizabeth married my grandfather James Albert Vaught. My grandmother was named for her mother. My question remains, what was *her* mother's name? Moody or Raulerson?

thanks for any help or suggestions!!!

Steve Vaught

Solomon died in Dec 1860 in Tyler County, age 61. Margaret died about the same time at age 57. The timing and relatively young ages suggest the possibility of a communicable disease.

Solomon had Chancey's Mill on the banks of Wolf Creek near where it runs into the Nueces near Jordan's Ferry. It seems likely that they were buried there. The site may now be under water.

I wonder if the Texas Archaeology and History folks have info on what should be a historic location. It should have been studied as part of the prep work for the dam.

After dark, Merritt withdrew to Ninevah.

Battle on the 16th at Front Royal, death on the 18th, burial at Staunton. The logical conclusion is that he was severely wounded at Front Royal, was evacuated to Staunton and died on the way to or at Staunton. The witness on Katie's pension application says "killed in battle."

While disease is also a possibility, we can discount it because the route of march did not go through Staunton. If he had been so ill as to be near death, he would have been left somewhere along the line of march. And he would have had to be very ill to be sent to Staunton and die within a couple of days.

From History of Kershaw: Kershaw, with his division, was ordered to join him (Jubal Early), and on the 6th of August the troops embarked at Chester Station and were transported to Mitchel Station, on the Richmond and Mannassas Railroad, not far from Culpepper. On the 12th the troops marched by Flint Hill, crossed the Blue Ridge, and camped near the ancient little hamlet of Front Royal.
The next day we were moved about one mile distant to a large spring, near the banks of the beautiful and now classic Shenandoah. How strange to the troops of the far South to see this large river running in the opposite direction from all our accustomed ideas of the flow
of rivers--that water seeks its level and will therefore run South, or towards the coast. But here the stream rises in the south and runs due north towards the Potomac. After long and fatiguing marches, the soldiers here enjoyed a luxury long since denied them on account of their never ceasing activity. The delight of a bath, and in the pure,
clear waters of the Shenandoah, was a luxury indeed. [On the 16th they were attacked in the river by Union Cavalry. John Chancey died on the 18th - of wounds?] On the 17th of
August the march was again resumed, and we reached Winchester, Va., on the next day. Remaining two days near the old city which had become so dear to the hearts of all the old soldiers through the hospitality and kindness of her truly loyal people, and being the place, too, of much
of our enjoyment and pleasure while camping near it two years before, we left on the 21st, going in the direction of Charleston.

Ancestral File Number: (AFN:11LV-NXR)

Served in 10th Georgia Infantry, Company K
Microfilm M226 roll 11

John C was hospitalized for pneumonia on May 9, three days after the battle of Chancellorsville - May 6, 1863. Then he was granted 60 days medical furlough on June 17. He was on this furlough when the battle of Gettysburg took place. He would have arrived home to find his 14 year old daughter 8+ months pregnant and planning to elope. Legend says he pursued the eloping couple for 7 days before he caught them. The legend does not address what happened to the boy (unknown, but Nancy's granddaughter said he was a cousin), but Nancy did not get married until years later in Texas to Jimmy Swan.

Age nearly 40 in Civil War. Catherine applied and was approved for a pension in Texas #04652.

Source: 1860 Census shows he is 37, Sherrif - Planter, 2000 real estate value and 1500 personal value (Chancy). He and his father are both shown in the 1850 census in Early county Georgia(Chancey). Solomon Chancey, his father, is not listed in Georgia's 1860 census because he moved to Woodville, Texas (Tyler county) to establish another mill - his fourth? - on Wolf Creek across the river from Jordans Ferry.

I was just told this story about the 4 brothers this past weekend by my uncle who is in his 80's. I have never heard it before.. Curious about the Chances (Chance, Chancey)in 1973 my grandmother tried (unsuccessfully) to find her great-grandparents names. She wrote to many places in the south (I have the response letters) It appears in 1973, the same brick wall.
My uncle does not know if the 4 brothers meant 2 in addition to Pleasant William Chance b 1819 and Joel Chance b 1830 or 35. (buried in Phillips co KS) or if it meant P. William's and Joel's father had 3 other brothers.
As the story goes...there were 4 brothers, 2 came over and 2 went back (or stayed back?). Never heard from them again.

I will call my aunt and uncle and have them write their acounts down. I am sure Granny (pleasanet William's daughter, my grandmother) told them this story. I have never found any other siblings to P. William and Joel, but I know who their children are.

I would have never read this post until I ran across the same story.. literally gave me chill bumps.

If anyone has any further information, email me Denise_Werner@msn.com or call 605-999-5859.

Thank you for the update Mary, I do appreciate it. I live in South Carolina, and it is difficult for me to chat with Wade Lee's side of the family. I will update the site to include these changes maybe tomorrow as I am working on additional pages to upload soon. I was aware that there were two children, but I do not post names of the living without their express consent...except for the older ones because it would be very difficult to keep the family together in a situation like this without adding their names..but I try to keep the children private until I learn they are deceased. I have you in my data base Mary, but certainly would not post that.

There was an Isaac Chancey in the 1790 Cheraws District SC census. We do not know anything about where he came from or where he went.. it is possible that his children figure into our family. If you would care to email privately, I will be happy to fill you in with some of my "thoughts"..nothing chiseled in stone, but I do believe I have some possibilities for the younger ones to look at sometime.

I understand you exactly concerning the two brothers. Well, sense I cannot either prove nor disprove it, I suppose its best to leave up to each individual to consider it for themselves.

I have a correction for you of Warren Lott Chancey's children. He had two children. Warren Lott Chancey, Jr. b. on August 18, 1938 in Jacksonville, Fl. Barbara Ann Chancey b. on September 7, 1940 in Jacksonville, Fl. and died on January 30, 1998 in Folkston, Ga. If you want any further information about Wade Lee's line just ask. One thing about that story about the two brothers. My mother, Barbara, worked at a bank for a while and she met a Chauncey there who had been told the exact same story her whole life, so I'm still inclined to think what I have been told is true. At least to a degree.

Hello Mary,

I am Robert Chancey. Samuel was my great gfather and Caroline Carter was my great gmother.

Sadly we have not been able to prove back beyond South Carolina. Samuel was born about 1790 in SC, but there the trail ends.

Several of us have been trying for about 5 years to find the door thru the brick wall, but the records are just not there. So many were destroyed in court house fires, and what didn't burn in those fires, General Sherman destroyed.

I have one document that shows Samuel Chancy as Samuel C Chancy Sr. I don't know where the Samuel J. came from, unless it was from Bladen County NC where there was a Samuel Jackson Chancy in the 1800s.

Please check my website Mary for our family...it is not 100% correct, but as close as I can make it at the moment.

http://www.geocities.com/bovon/index.html

My Aunt Janie (Amy Jane, Wade Lees sister) told me when I was about 17 or 18 that she had been told of 4 brothers that stowed away on a ship, came to the new world and "took a chance" changed their name to Chancy. We now know that there is no truth to that tale...but undoubtably she had been told that as fact. Everywhere you go, different families have different, but simular tales.

Email me at k4yaw@hotmail.com and we can get what I have for our family to you as needed. Or reply to this and I should get it that way.

Hi, I'm trying to trace my ancestry back to the first member of my family to come to America. Actually, I'm trying to prove an old family tale of two brothers who came to America together, one stayed in the North, stayed Chauncey, and one came to the South, became Chancey. My mother was Barbara Chancey of Jacksonville, FL. Her father was Warren Lott Chancey of Charlton Co., GA. Papa's father was Wade Lee Chancey of Charlton Co., GA, and Wade's father was Samuel J. Chancey of Appling Co., GA and is from his second marriage. Samuel J.'s father was Samuel Chancey of South Carolina, and this is where I run into a brick wall. I know that this Samuel or his father was the one to move my family to GA between 1790 and 1816. Any help would be welcome!!!!

Hello, I do not know anything about the Chancey you are refering to. The Chancy that we think is our relative is John W. Chancey. He was in Rosiclaire at one time. He married Ora Ann Pool. I believe her Obituary can be found if you go to Browning Funeral and a site will come up and you can go from there. Browing Funeral is located in Evansville, IN. Our John had a daughter Laura Bell Chancy. She was Born Mar. 9, 1893 in Evansville, IN. She lived in Murphysboro, IL and is burried in Park Lawn Cemetery in Evansville. John is not burried there. We do not know what happened to him. Laura married a Lemuel McKinnis.
If you find a connection we would appreciate you letting us know. It has been a mystery as to what happened to John.
Thanks so much. Mary

Hello Rob, and yes.. that is one reason I indicated it was undocumented material.

Back when I was first searching for information concerning Zachariah and Celia Griffis Chancey..some Griffis or Bohannon researcher forwarded that to me. I entered it into my data base with notes that it was questionable.

That being said.. I have seen some huge age and year discrepancies in some censuses...

My own great great grandmother Rebecca Kennedy Chancey was born about 1795...according to several census averages. But, when she died...February 1880..the medical person listed her age as 95!...and that was not the first time her age was way up..

Bottom line... I do take notice of ages found in any census, but do not ever say it is 100% correct.

Nothing of any substance. I realize from reading your earlier posts that you need Chancey/Bohannon connections. Sorry, I have not found that, but the Bohannon's were most likely kin to Celia Griffis in some way.

If you want or need thoughts...i.e., speculation concerning Zachariah himself, here is what I "THINK"..notice the operative word, think!

Zachariah, born about 1805 in South Carolina was a son of Jeremiah Chancey who (in all likely hood) descends from Pasquotank and Perquimans Counties North Carolina through Zachariah Chancey, son of Edmund Chancey Sr.

That first(?) Zachariah fell out of his father Edmund's good graces and was cut from Edmund's Will with one Shilling. Zachariah left that area prior to his fathers passing in 1753.

A Zachariah shows up in South Carolina asking the Colonial Government for reimbursement for "a horse pressed" and provisions in 1760. The Colonial government/militia could stop by your farm and re provision itself and commandeer a horse if needed. One of Zachariah's sons, Edmund...witnesses a Will for Thomas Simpson in St. Marks Parrish, SC 6 Dec 1762.

The latter day Jeremiah Chancey, So named after the original Zachariah's Brother Jeremiah who died , was enumerated in the 1790 SC census near what is today, Walterboro, SC.

I "THINK" this Jeremiah was a son of the NC Zachariah. His son, Jeremiah settled near Walterboro, SC and was enumerated there as Geremiah Chancy in 1790. His son Jeremiah found his way into Georgia sometime around 1810/1815. He was married twice. His first wife had apparently died prior to 1820..Georgia's first surviving census. He had sons and daughters in his household. Later, the Zachariah who married Celia Griffis is found living near Jeremiah in Ware County. Then, he moves to New River County, Florida..along with known descendants of (his father) Jeremiah.

Zachariah and Celia did not have any children, and no further trace of them are found after 1860 near Stark, Bradford County, Florida.

The family names of Zachariah and Jeremiah have only been found in this NC, SC and FL branch...except, Anne Arundel County, Maryland...prior to 1790.

I know you understand that all of the above is only speculation on my part, and others of this Chancey branch may disagree with me 200%, but it is my opinion and I will stick to it unless and until better proof is found.
