So I would put Douglas Chandler, New Jersey, 1967 in the subject. I assume that Karen is you, and you are looking for your father? They will assume you are looking for a Karen Dunn in New Jersey 1967. Unless I am wrong about what you are searching for? Good luck again... carey
Many descendants of William and Annis Chandler of Roxbury, Mass. settled in that area. Descendants of John Chandler and Hannah Gardiner also settled there. I don't know if John descended from William or another Chandler family. William and Annis were the most prolific of the early arriving Chandler families.

The other big New England Chandler families were Edmund Chandler of Duxbury, William of Newbury, Mass and Roger of Concord, Mass. There were no Edmund descendants in that area that I know of. I don't think that descendants of Roger of Concord or William of Newbury moved to Woodstock, but have not researched those lines in depth.
A DNA test could possibly link you to one of these families as I am presuming that you are a Chandler surnamed male. It is a simple, painless swab to the inside of the cheek and drop in a mailer test. To read about the early Chandler families and the DNA test go to www.edmundchandler.com and click DNA results on the left hand side.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Carol

George Washington Chandler 1877-1920 Georgia

I am looking for this man who married an Alexa/Alexra/Elexra otherwise known as Allie B. Freeman. I found them finally on the census. In 1910 they are in Decatur, Dekalb, Ga. In 1920 THey are in Coxes Cobb Ga. In 1930 they are in Atlanta Fulton GA. Their children were as follows per census: Margie 1906, Laura 1908, Leonard 1909, Lexie 1911-1930, Effie Jeanette 1914-1946, Ruth abt 1914, Vera 1918. In 1930 They have a grandson there with the name George W. Henby (questionable hard to see on transcription) but the mother is not in the household to see who married a Mr. Henby (spelling?) And there is a nephew by the name of Oscar or Oren Chandler.

Allie B. was my great grandmothers sister. I have searched for 15 years to find her family. I have the paperwork from their brothers death that listed her as a Chandler. Allies mother was a Chandler as well, which leads me to wonder if George Washington was not related to us in some way. I have extensive research on her line however and am curious which branch yet to be discovered carries Allies husband. I hope someone can help!

Thanks, Carey Seagraves Werlein

I'm looking for any information on the family of John A.W. Chandler, born around 1809, died after 1880. He married Martha A. Wells in Kanawha County, Virginia on May 16, 1830.

Their children include:
Abraham Edes Chandler (1846-1938)
Richard Allen Chandler (1840-1926)
James (abt 1844)
Martha (abt 1842)
Francis (abt 1851)
Henry (abt 1831)

I have seen in several places that John’s father was Richard C. Chandler, but would like to know what proof there is for this. I am inclined to believe it to be correct, because I recently noticed on findagrave.com that there is a Richard C. Chandler and R.C. Chandler in the cemetery where my great great grandfather, Abraham Edes Chandler from above, is buried, and they are of the right ages to be John’s brother and father. (The cemetery being Teays Hill Cemetery in St. Albans WV, although none of them are on findagrave, I have been to the cemetery and Abe is buried there with his wife next to his son, I’ll have to make mom take me again and take pictures to post there).

I know very little about John and his wife beyond their names listed on Abraham’s death certificate/marriage/censuses, and would love to find out anything more.
I have now worked my line back to 1804 in Sussex County, Delaware.

Augustis (or sometimes written as Custis)Chandler appears on the 1804 Sussex County Delinquent Tax Lists in Baltimore Hundred. He continues to show up frequently for several years on the same list. His sons, John, Ebe, James and George, also show up once they reach the age of 16. I have not worked my way through all the tax lists but do plan on examining each line.

This is an incredible breakthrough for this family lineage!

So the "three brothers that settled and then one went west" story is not entirely accurate. There were 5 brothers and my great-great grandfather, William, was the youngest of the five. The one that "went West" was George and there is notation about his being out of state in 1830.

These tax lists are going to yield quite a bit of valuable information.

Teresa A.
Re: Chandlers in Greenville, SC & Caldwell County, KY

Thank you for the information you posted from the 1996 issue of the Chandler Assn newsletter. This article from 2001 written by Annamae Chandler was before all the online census information was available I presume. It has been well documented that Solomon King Chandler was the son of William H. Chandler of Greenville, SC and did fight in the Rev. War during 1780 and 1782. His father William, Joel and his sons, Shadrack, Joseph (KIA) and Obadiah (KIA) also fought during this period. In the 1790 census, William, King, Zachariah, Joel, Shadrack and another of Joel's sons, Timothy all lived in the same area of Greenville, SC. In the 1810 census of Caldwell County, KY, William, King, Zachariah and Timothy all lived in the same area of Eddyville, KY. This proves to me that there was a very close relationship among these families. King received a Kentucky Land Grant of 400 acres. Zachariah is my ancestor and his daughter Amanda born in KY by his second wife,Elizabeth Boyd was my gggrandmother and after her marriage she moved to Arkansas. I have hit a wall in trying to find out who Zach's father was. In all of my research there was never an Abraham name that was passed on by Zach or any of his children. His son's names were Josiah and Solomon King. I believe he was too young to have fought in the Rev. War and since he was the head of household in 1790 with 5 females, they could have been his mother and sisters. As far as marriage to Rachel Thornhill, she was married to Zachariah Candler on Feb. 10, 1791 in Bedford Co., Virginia. This came from the Quaker marriage bonds found in the Bedford Co. Historical records. None of the records I have collected show that my Z. Chandler was a Quaker. Thanks again for the information you provided.

The wife of the Riverside Chandler died in 2003 and repeated phone calls to California have failed to locate the husband, who would have carried the required Y-chromosome. His phone is never answered. I thought I had located a son of his, but I only get an answering machine at his phone number, and the names given on that machine are not the names of his son. If anyone has contact details for those Californian Chandlers who descend from Willam of Newbury, Massachusetts, please e-mail me DickChandler@ChandlerFamilyAssociation.org

Please DON'T post details here because we must not disclose details of living people on this message board.

Thanks

Dick

There is some much out there that doesnt have the documentation but someone needs to check William Chandler, bap. 1617 son of Robert Chandler of St, margarets church at westminister, London. So far that is the only possibility that I have come across. In my public treeposey1636 I have listed all the documentation I can find on the descendents of William Chandler by his three wives Newbury,Massachusetts Jon Posey

PPS I found this at NARA Indian Census Rolls, 1885-1940:

"One important change for 1930 concerned people who did not live on the reservation. The understanding was that the agent was to include all his enrollees, whether there on the reservation or elsewhere, and no residents who were enrolled on another reservation. They should be recorded on another agent's list."

You will have to read the whole thing to see if this could apply to Joe Buster Chandler. Just Google the NARA Indian census roles and you should find it.

Carol

Hi Dave,

That 1930 Indian census is exciting news. I have seen people reported twice in the same census in two different locales. Censuses are not all done on the same day so that could happen. Also possibly people were reported still living in one place and they were actually living in another or it may be that Joe Buster Chandler on the Indian census was a relative.

Maybe NARA or tribal records would show Joe Buster Chandler. That is an unusual name. I am not familiar with Native American research at all. Maybe there is a board where you can post a query.

Also, coming up next month is the release of the 1940 US federal census. It won't be indexed right away, but if you know where your father lived, you can look him up that way. You may find some new clues.

Good luck and again a great find!

Carol

Thank you Carol. We have talked before, as you people never refrain from corresponding with your members.
As you know I have been searhing for my Joe Buster Chandler for so many years that if he were not my father, I would think he never existed.
The only new information I have found is on the 1930 Indian census in Spokane,WA. is listed a Joseph Buster Chandler. I know this is not my Joe as my faher was in San Diego, CA . and married to my mother at this same time, but it is the first time I have found a Joe Buster Chandler in Washington. and there is always the chance that he could be connected some way, although I am not sure how to proceed with Indian records or marriages.

Best regards,

Dave

I have corresponded with Dave previously about Joseph Buster Chandler. The Mormons are adding more information to their site all of time, so maybe something will turn up there in the future. I couldn't connect Joseph Buster Chandler with the Edmund Chandler family.

Sylvanus, as you all probably know, descends from Capt. John Chandler of Duxbury, Mass. One of our members (the Edmund Chandler Family Association) has recently proven by researching over 400 Duxbury deeds that Capt. John is the grandson of Joseph Chandler and great grandson of Edmund, the immigrant. We believe that Capt. John's parents were Edmund Chandler and Elizabeth Alden. So his Chandler lineage would go like this: Capt. John>Edmund>Joseph>Edmund, the immigrant.

We did a lot of research on Rev. Abel Chandler, Sylvanus' brother. He also died in Iowa. If you go to our web site www.edmundchandler.com and click on Edmund's Community Courier at the top and scroll through the blog you will find updates on Rev. Abel plus the main story.

You can also access the Chandler DNA project by going to our web site www.edmundchandler.com and clicking on DNA results on the home page. Edmund descendants are Group 13. This project is being done through FTDNA not Sorenson although we do have DNA results from other sources.

Regarding Elbridge Gerry Chandler, when we were first starting out we mistakenly thought that he was related to Elbridge Gerry, the governor of Massachusetts. It turns out that he was a popular man and many people named their sons after him. Elbridge Gerry also inspired the political term "gerrymandering" which means to make political districts into odd shapes which would favor one political party over the other.

We welcome new members and you do not have to prove your lineage to join as we are a research group. I know that I have corresponded with Dave, but if I have corresponded with the other posters on this thread and have forgotten, please forgive me as I research a lot of Chandlers.

Happy hunting!

Carol May
C0-chairperson of the Edmund Chandler Family Association

I have found a Joseph B Chandler who was born 9 September 1899 in Washington and died 18 August 1984 in California in the death records for California. Is this Joe Buster Chandlers information? If it is, maybe we can back trace his line,
The Chandler line came to America as part of the English colony of Plymouth, Massachusetts though not from the Mayflower group. There are thousands of Chandlers from Edmund Chandler spread across this county. I don't personally know if any are involved in the DNA project but you can reach the group that is doing research along this avenue at the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation who is currently performing such research. If you are interested in this program, you can contact them through their Web site (http://smgf.org) or the The Chandler DNA Project at http://chandlerfamilyassociation.org/dna.html
We are direct descendants of the Edmund Chandler line that lived in Maine. Our Chandler family moved from Maine in the 1850's and helped found Cambridge, Story, Iowa. I have thousands of names that may help you link in, but I will need full names, dates and places of birth, marriage and death for a few generations back from you (as much as you have) before I can determine if we have common links. My grandmother was Lulu Maud Chandler of Story County, Iowa (though she was born in Maine and died in Longview, Washington.) She started our family on the now third generation of genealogists looking up the family tree.
I would be happy to help you in any way I can. My home email is wills@exchangenet.net

Sincerely,
Patrick Wills
Hi,

Thank you for the information on Elmer/Elbridge Chandler family. Do you know of any males of this line that has submitted a DNA test ?. I have a 37 marker test but have not seen any close results yet.
Elmer and his clan lived close to where my father Joe Buster Chandler was raised. Although I have never been able to verify his statements that he was raised in Spokane b. 09/09, 1899 and lived until 1925 near the three rivers;
the Snake, Palouse & Tucannon Rivers.
Joe's verbal statement was that he was approx. (2) years old when his mother died. (This would have been around 1901). He thought his mother was from England, or of English decent. His father, he knew as John J. or A. J. Chandler, and apparently lived with him until at least 1907 in Spokane, Washington. At this time Joe claims to have left home about 1907. (This may mean he left his fathers home in Spokane, and went to live with an Aunt). The only thing he remembers about his youth, is that he thought he was cared for by a red-headed Aunt after his mother died. (Could have been Uncle's wife).
John J. Chandler, Joe's father, according to Joe’s memory, ran some type of grocery store, or was a Merchant in Washington. Joe remembered traveling with his father to Yakama, Washington on a buckboard wagon.
He thought his father John, was from Des Moines, Iowa, and that his father John could have had a brother in WW1 that served in Czechoslovakia.

Dave Chandler

If you are asking about George Franklin (or Franklin George) Chandler born 3 Sep 1861 in Maine (I find his name both ways in records) the son of Elbridge Gerrish Chandler who was born 18 May 1827 in Foxcroft, Maine then yes he had a daughter named Nellie M Chandler who was born in 1883 after his death. She was born in Schaller, Sac, Iowa and died there in January 1976.

Elbridge Chandler born 1 Sep 1900 in Missoula, Montana (and died 11 January 1953 in Pend Oreille, Washington) is the brother of Dearl, Claude and Authur Chandler. They are the sons of Elmor August Chandler born 10 Jan 1860 in Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine and his wife Eldora Belle Padden born 15 May 1867 in Frankville, Winneshiek, Iowa. Elmor August Chandler died 30 April 1944 in Spokane, Washington. Elmor is the son of Elbridge Gerrish Chandler born 18 May 1827 also in Foxcroft. Hopefully this information will help you determine if your Elbridge Chandler is akin to this line. Elbridge Chandler born in 1900 is my second cousin.

She is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Ida, Iowa. I show her parents as Joel S Foote and Esther Whitney. I have a birth date for Joel of 13 April 1803 in Chesterville, Franklin, Maine. I have a birth date of 27 August 1807 also of Chesterville, Maine for Esther. I do not have death information on Caroline's parents yet.

Many thanks for the information -- that explains where the "Guilmartin" came from!

I'm hoping that some India records may be put on line eventually -- travelling to London to search them is not easy.

I think your relation may be the sister of my Grandfather Henry George Chnadler who married Elsie Freda Barton in India.

Henrys parents was Henry Chandler and Mary Guilmartin but we know very little of either family before this.

Try the censuses at www.familysearch.org. They are free. I did find a William Chandler, born in Kentucky, with son "Sanferd" Chandler, also born in Kentucky. "Sanferd" was born in 1871. He may be your guy.

Southern Chandlers are out of my area, but if you check out
The Chandler Family Association website, http://chandlerfamilyassociation.org/, you may be able to find out more and you can post a query. They have a panel that will look for an answer.

Also, if there are any male surnamed Chandlers in your family you may want to consider a DNA test. It is a simple, painless, swab to the inside of the cheek, drop in a mailer test. Several hundred Chandlers have been tested and many, many families have been identified. You can read about that also on their website.

Happy hunting!

Carol
