great! I am researching the orphanage at the moment. Do you have any photos of these people - I am thinking of writing a book called Hulmer's Children and wondering how much information would be available about each child - I have some wonderful photographs of the old orphanage taken 1950's but none taken about the time the orphanage was running
Kath

Yes Kath. They were the children of William Henry Chant who drowned at Havelock in 1880. His wife had 7 children at that stage so some ended up for a period in the orphanage.
John H

Thanks for your e-mail. I have made no Brixham connection to the Chants (yet!) and the origins of the earliest Chant ancestor on our records are a bit vague, but believed to be Hallsands in South Devon (just across Start Bay from Berry Head), although he may have come from Somerset/Dorset prior to settling in the South Hams and establishing the line to which my wife belongs.
It's true that a lot of South Devon people went to the Newfoundland fishing in the summer and took with them shoes made locally in the winter (presumably for barter). No doubt there are some local history references to that, but I haven't pursued that yet.
I'll get back to you with a bit more, if I can get my hands on it.

Stuart I have been searching for an ancestor Richard Chant.
Came across Richard who married Christian Youlden in Brixham Devon in 1773 and can find no other record. The history of Newfoundland tells of Devon fishermen from villages such as Brixham who went from annual voyages to taking their families and settling in Newfoundland either on a temporary or permanent basis. Occurred a lot in second half of 18th Century Probably doesnt help my Chants who ended up moving from Sherborne to New Zealand.
Would like to share any info you may have.
These is no evidence to date that a Chaunt(e) person arrived in England to settle in Somerset in the early 1300's. The taking or development of surnames occurred between 1100 and 1400 in England. It was far from compulsorary and was a reaction to the need to record people in official records to do with land, taxes and various other property and business transactions. The recording of Baptisms, marriages and burials began in 1539. Though not everywhere at the same time. Many early entries or registers have been lost to the ravages of time. There may well at one time have been details on Chant/Chaunt(e) families of that time that we know nothing about due to lost church records.

Be careful of any assumptions. They have caught many researchers including myself off guard with following incorrect family lines or information. Be more aware
of the times these people lived in. The clergy spoke
Latin and wrote in Latin c 1400's, the common folk
spoke middle English which is very different to todays English - remember English is adaptive and words and meanings have altered over time. Thirdly the English Royal Court spoke French in the past. Someone asked to sing - Chant /Chaunt in Church or at the local manor may be named for just being a local singer. There are many Chant's in my family lines with musical talent including my children.
In my family this ability generally is in every second generation going back to at least 1844 with Luke Chant my 3x great grandfather. is this a family inherited trait with other Chant Chaunt lines I wonder?

regards

Michael Cheeseman
Great Grandson of Alice Chant 1894-1971
Descendant Of William Chant and Mary Rogers married Sherborne Dorset 1765.

My own research over the years has always led me to believe that the Chant family arrived in the UK sometime in the late 1400's to mid to late 1500's from France. Something I have been aware of from a young age is that the family name is French and I believe originated in the area of France once known as Dauphiné. The fact there are many variations of the name means that William Chant (or Chaunt) may have been born under a completely different spelling and even in France which makes his true origins even harder to find. I am still working on finding his origins and do not give up hope.

Hi,

I am guessing I know your name but am unwilling to post personal info and information about living persons on an open forum. I was in touch with your mother a few years ago and exchanged several emails. I hope she is well and can give you my email address. I do not have a current Ancestory account and so cannot contact you directly. Sorry to be so oblique. We would be 3rd cousins. Regards Sherron

Hello cousin Rikki

have I contacted you before by phone?

I am a 3x and 4x great grandson of James Chant (1816-1876) via his sons Luke Chant my 3x great grandfather and Richard
Chant my 2x great grandfather. Nice to hear from another descendant of Samuel, though not from Alfred's line descendant's for sometime. What is your query?

Sorry but only our Sherborne line is confirmed to 1765
from Prmary records, Where did you get 1728 from?

Be careful as I first had George Chant married to Elizabeth Crabb in 1796 as our line and everyone else
followed that line of thought til George and Elizabeth's 1799 marriage was located.

I have been researching the family since 1979 and sent Sean Leyland some of my info when he started researching in
1997. We were working on a book together but as time went on that seems to have changed.

I have Samuel's Biography well developed as with all his siblings but Alfred's need's more work on Bio and Photo's
for himself and family. Any help there would be appreciated.

Your Aware Samuel, Ann and Elizabeth stayed around Albury
while five siblings and a cousin went to Wagga then Dubbo?

I also connect to Mary Chant nee Bunter's brothers Luke Bunter (came to WA where Richard and Luke Chant later met up with their Bunter Cousins and Willam Bunter - Richard Chant married his cousin as did brother James. Robert, James son of George and a bunter cousin married Mudford's girls descended from the West Chinnock Chant's. I have been researching the Chant name in general since 1980's due to the West Chinnock link and many queries about stoke sub hamdon, Oborne, Milbourne Port cahnt lines so I have research for 16 Primary Chant 1700's families in the Somerset/Dorset/Wiltshire areas to which 90% of all Chant records can be linked. Some info has come from Chant list members and some from descendant's directly as well as my own research in historical records, assistance from the Dorset and Somerset record Offices as well as local town historians in various Dorset and Somerset Locality's such as a Sherborne local who sent me the Chant and associated family Burials details

It is likely the Chant's all descend from a family of Chaunt's in Somerset early 1400 AD I have from an old
archives parchment. Proving that is the hard part.

regards

Michael Cheeseman
P.S. My name comes up a lot on a internet search, with
Chant research notes as well as hundred's of other
families I have researched. In all over 3000 of my
direct ancestor's have been traced to date. My earliest traced ancestors date 495 AD in England and about 760 AD France. 1 in three of my ancestral lines I have back to 1538, the start of Baptism, marriage amd Burial records by the Church. My Cheeseman's I have back to The commonwealth period a gap that is often a roadblock for many as records were not keep from 1640's to 1660's.

Hi there I'm Rikki Chant daughter of James Chant,a common name in the family tree along with Samuel & Alfred too.James chant is my ancestor as I will demonstrate as follows:::
James Chant (1816 - 1876)
is your 3rd great grandfather
Samuel Chant (1854 - 1915)
Son of James
Alfred Chant (1886 - 1941)
Son of Samuel
Alfred Samuel John Chant (1917 - 1968)
Son of Alfred
James Geoffrey Joseph Chant (1955 - )
Son of Alfred Samuel John
Rikki-jade Chant
You are the daughter of James Geoffrey Joseph.

I have gone as far back as William Chant born in 1728. I'm trying to track down my cousin's husband,I believe he may be the man you mentioned that married into the Chant family,as I did talk on the phone to the man I'm looking for & he was doing a book on Chant family tree.My brother has 2 children who are Chants, this is the only continuation through Alfred (Tex) Chant as myself & my sisters kids have their fathers name. Please let me know if you know the name &/or a contact detail for the man you mentioned who marred the Chant. Also my Chant tree is on public so if you're a Chant or related some way please feel free to have a look & add any info that you think is relevant. The Bellin tree is my mothers side so isn't relevant thanks everyone. Ps the girl born on the voyage was named Ann Sea Chant, they also had a daughter who died on the voyage,I believe her name may have been Claire.
Hello Tray

My great grandmother was Alice Chant 1894-1971.

Now there are a few references to Chant/Chaunt at Stoke before 1584 but not referring to William unfortunately. As weddings often occurred in the brides parish I have assumed that Stoke-Sub-Hamdon may have been Alice's home parish church.

Chant's dominate the Somerset/Dorset border area very early
and it suggests they originated most likely in Somerset.
There was a Chant/Chaunt Farm at Ham Hill, Somerset in the 1400's. And William for father and son are mentioned.
My Chant line is now back to the 1650's but it's been costly researching to find that as I live in Australia
and old Manorial records etc can be located in numerious libraries across the UK, because the families that created
them may have titles in one county but their seat or main Manor was in another county. To get back to 1584 is an achievement in itself as many family lines have brickwalls preventling further progress backwards from even the 1800's.

I would love if you could email me your line so I can add it to my notes. My 2x and 3x great grandfather's Luke and Richard Chant were brothers and one of their cousins Mahala
Coles daughter of Mary Chant married Philip Chant of the Oborne Chants which I have traced back to Somerton, Somerset Chant lines. Luke's and Richard's younger brother
Robert married Martha Mudford, a nephew James Chant married
Eliza Mudford and a cousin Fred Bunter married Mary Ann Mudford, all sisters. Their father William Mudford was the grandson of Mary Chant b 1751 West Chinnock, Somerset from the line of Robert Chant b 1700 which has been unable to trace back further as only his mother's name is listed in the Parish record. So hence my heavy interest in the Chant's.

Do keep in touch

regards

Michael Cheeseman
forever_fossicking at bigpond dot com

His parents, William Chant and Hannah Hamlin, married 8 Sep 1850 and son William was baptised the day after their marriage. He is in the 1851 census but then cannot be found. His parents went on to have other children including another William so I am assuming the first William died but I am unable to find a death record???

I have your name only. For William Chant I have born 1795 Martock, and died about 1851 with the follooiwing note: "He was a soldier. Joan Gray has a copy of the immigration form from the SA Government and will send a photo of it in jpg form if wanted.
David Chant Sussex found this earlier than 1977.
Reported in 1841 census he was not with Elizabeth and the children but in the 1851 census Elizabeth is recorded as a widow aged 44 and born in Barrington, Somerset. It has been stated that William Chant is buried in Odcombe as is his brother Onesiphorus. When Alexander married his father is reported to be William Chant according to the “Digger: South Aust.
You are using an "Ancestry" message board. Both "Ancestry" and "RootsWeb" have a ruling that living people are not discussed in the open on their sites, including the letters lists. Furthermore, in any tree you put on, mark such people only as 'living' to preserve their anonymity. By using this board you are agreeing to abide by that ruling.
Such a ruling also applies on other genealogical web sites. You don't like it, you don't use those sites.

The whole idea identity thieves useing genealogical sites for info is way- WAY-overrated. For some years, there has been a standing reward of $10,000 to whoever can prove it to be the major source of such. To date there is no court case on file anywhere that it has ever happened.

As to permission of living persons to talk about them- you have *got* to be kidding. Kindly point me to *any* law in *any* state that says that.

Anyone doing business with a firm which uses mother's maiden name as part of their security should run- not walk- to another business.

In other parts of the world birth and marriage and death records are open and they don't seem to have a big indentity theft problem. Here in the states several states have the info online, TX, NC, TN, CA, MO-just to name a few.

"Identity theft" is a straw boogie man. There is a world of difference between personal information (which is not private-Dat of birth, marriage etc.) and Private information (Soc.Sec. #, Credit card #, etc.) but Americans seem to not understand the difference.

I've been doing genealogy for over 50 years and this new "Everything is private and can't be mentioned" is just that- new, and imho highly overrated.

Primarily for the purposes of identity theft, you don't want to detail living persons and their immediate ancestors (the old "mother's maiden name question)--which you did for yourself. Also, you are talking about folks who are living and their families without their permission. Discourteous at best. You can do this off line after determining who it is you are talking to and their legitimate interest. Difficult, of course, on the wild web... Best to keep discussion to folks back at least several generations.

BTW, I am also a USA Chant descendant.

Regards

Sherron

I am new to Ancestry. I replied to a post asking about Margret Chant Papandreau, a distant cousin. Why is this deemed inappropriate?
I am looking for relatives and would invite anyone who has info to contact me.....Chant, Hillary, Reynolds.
I would, in most cases, agree; but when it comes to the lineage of a public figure (such as the wife of a Prime Minister), a slightly different standard applies.

In any case, it appears it was her parents and not Margaret herself that were asked about.
