As far as I am aware the only way you can obtain more information about a death is to purchase the death certificate. You are fortunate in that you have the reference numbers. Go onto the web page www.direct.gov.uk and put family history into the search section which will come up with a section where you can order certificates online. The site will give you costs etc. I have obtained many certificates through this site which is the GRO government records office.

I have baptism and burials for Woodstock but cannot come up with Anne Charlett. Good luck.

I've had a reply from the website owner but wasn't very much help at all.

However, I think I may have found Edward John in the 1891 census living with his grandparents John & Harriett. Only the DOB isn't quite right and his name is John.

So why do I think its him ?
By process of elimination really. I have explored other family members and worked out where any other John's were at that time. Still its hard to be 100% sure.

Annie's birth & death records are...
Birth: 1878, 2nd quarter, Woodstock, 3a, 731
Death: 1878, 2nd quarter, Woodstock, 3a, 435

I've never been to a registry office so don't know how much detail is available without ordering certificates.

Burial of Eliza Charlett in 1878 - no baptism or burial for Annie Charlett! I would assume that she would have be baptized if given a name before burial but can find no trace of either in Yarnton parish records.

Im getting nowhere fast with my search for Edward John Charlott. I have found his birth and baptism records in 1881 but he seems to have disappeared after that so any help anyone can give would be greatfully recieved.

But...

I have come across this on a website...

EDWARD JOHN CHARLETT. Born 20 May 1881. Yarnton Oxfordshire.
Baptism: 03 Jul 1881, Yarnton Oxfordshire.
lt appears that he ran away from his parents to live with a family called Browne and emigrated to Canada.

I've sent an email to the owner of the site but no reply as yet.

Further to the death of Eliza Dunsby, im pretty sure that she died in child birth. The childs details being...

Annie Charlett b1878 d1878. If anyone is able to look these details up it would be most helpful.

Hi,

I can help a little - I have the BDM of Yarnton and have found the birth of John Thomas in 1851. He married Eliza Dunsby b1851 - they married in 1877 in Yarnton. Eliza died in 1878 aged 26 but there is no record of a child. I can find no further marriage in Yarnton for John Thomas so he must have married outside the parish, possibly where Harriett lived! They had a son Edward born 1881 in Yarnton - assuming this is the same JT and Harriett. John Thomas' parents were John and Harriett, John b1825, son of Thomas and Lucy Charlett - we are connected. My great great grandfather was the son of Thomas Charlett. Thomas Charlett was Parish Clerk of Yarnton as was three generations after him. There are a number of gravestones in Yarnton relating to the Charlett family. There are also many in Bladon where Thomas was born.

Update...

Edward John 20 May 1881 Yarnton : father = John Thomas Charlett : mother = Harriett Charlott formerly Beckinsale

Martha 1 Jan 1886 Union workhouse, Witney : father = none : mother = Harriett Charlott

So it looks as if my grandfather was also illigitimate even though it says his father is John Charlott on his birth certificate.

So I wonder what happened.

In 1881 census JT & Harriett are working at Parkers Farm, Yarnton.
May 1881 Edward John is born
by Jan 1886 JT has gone

Did JT leave because Harriett played away from home ?
I wonder when Parkers farm closed
Did JT leave to seek work elsewhere ?
What became of Edward John ?

Hi. I hope you dont mind me jumping in on your thread. I am also searching for info on the Charlett family.

I am the Great grandson of John Thomas Charlott who's parents were John & Harriett (nee Clarke)

It would appear that John Thomas married 4 times and I am decended from the 2nd marriage to Harriett Beckinsale. However, there is something not quite right about the dates.

My Granfather (George) was born in Witney workhouse and is shown in the 1891 census as being there with his mother Harriett and sister Martha but JT has gone off to London by then and is married to his 3rd wife. I believe there is also another son (Edward) who managed to avoid the workhouse.

DOB's are...
Edward 20 May 1881 Yarnton
Martha 1886 Aston
George 16 Jan 1890 Witney

My Grandfathers birth certificate states that his mother is Harriett Sharlott formerly Beckinsale and the father is John Sharlott.

I read somewhere that JT's first wife (Eliza Dunsby) died in childbirth. I believe they were living in Yarnton at that time. Do any records exist ?

Can anyone help shed any light on any of this?
Does anyone have access to any baptism records ?
Does anyone know why there are no 1861 census records for Yarnton ?
Are there any gravestones in Yarnton church for the Charlott's ?

I met Olive (George's daughter)last year and she actually gave me your address and told me your connection - your grandmother was Harriett is that correct? I have been meaning to contact you by mail but as is the case never seem to have the right time. It would be good if we could communicate as I have lots of info that you might be interested in. You can contact me on charlett@live.com.au. I am planning on seeing Olive again sometime next year when I visit the UK.

Hi Keith,

My Thomas Charlett, parish Clerk of Yarnton was my grandfather x 4. My mother is a Charlett. I did obtain info from the boards that John Charlett who married Margreat at Warks was from Glos and I have five Charletts (possibly their children) born at Moreton-in-Marsh, Glos however no Anthony so not sure if connection is correct. There is a possible link with Worcester but I'm afraid it's slow progress now I'm so far back and living in Australia doesn't help, I can't drop by Records Office which is what I would love to do.

Thanks for your imput, I shall keep you posted.

Kind regards

Valerie.

However, a John Charlewood is shown in the burials transcript in 1709, died aged 3 which puts a spanner in the works! All quite intriguing and time consuming, however exciting it gets. Please drop me a line if you have anything further that would help!

Believe me, John was born at Bladon on 20 July 1706 and baptised at Bladon St. Martin on 29 July 1706. However, his parents, Anthony Charlett (168?-1730), (son of John & Margaret) and Avis Reeves, were using the surname CHARLEWOOD. You can check the Bond for Anthony's Estate (1731) at ORO if you wish. He appears on that as Anthony CHARLOT.

Kind regards

Keith

Back in 1997 I had a letter from the then Vicar of Moreton in the Marsh who was researching a family called Charlwood living in the village of Kingham. Oxon in the 1700's.
They pronounced their name "Charlud"(obviously in a broad Oxfordshire accent!)and over the years it became corrupted and was being written as "Charlett"plus variations! He found entries in parish records that the these various names were used sometimes in one family.Using this info I was able to go back to Anthony Charlwood and Avis Reeves who married Oct 4 1705 at Oxford. Their son Richard Charlett married Ann Slatter in 1737 at Bladen, Oxon. They had a son Richard who married Jane Gilbert at Bladon and had a son Thomas born abt. 1776. I think this is my Thomas who married Lucy Fletcher but as yet haven't been able to confirm this.
Does this help?

I am researching the Charlett family on behalf of my husband John, his grandmother was Emily Charlett, she was born in Yarnton, Oxfordshire in 1882, her parents were James Charlett and Sarah (nee Giles) the Charlett's were the parish clerks for Yarnton going back to Richard Charlett born about 1750.
If this is of any interest to you, or if there is a connection that you can see, please don't hesitate to get in touch, I would love to hear from you.
Charlette/Cholette/Highway

Looking for Sarah Cholette who possibly married a Pierre Highway and had daughters Helen & Elizabeth and a son who died in infancy. Helen was born April 22, 1923, in Cormorant, Manitoba and resides in The Pas, Manitoba, Canada. Sarah died in 1928 from TB. She is buried in The Pas, Manitoba, Canada. She was supposedly from Cumberland House, Saskatchewan, Canada. Elizabeth might be her sister and went by the name "Charlette". She married a "Krassilowsky" in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Any information about these people would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am researching a family of Charletts from Chester England. So far I am back to a Cornelius Charles Charlett born in Ashurst, East Sussex , England born around 1799. He married Martha (born 1801) in Aberyswyth , Cardigan, Wales. They moved to Chester.
Keen to hear from anyone researching this surname as it is so unusual, even better if you are on the same lines as myself.

Thanks in anticipation.
