Grace Cooper Charley, age.93,born,in Bradford, the daughter of ,Ray and Isabelle (Bonner) Cooper.

Grace C. Charley
Greensburg

Grace Cooper Charley, 93,
of Greensburg
and Boynton Beach, Fla.,
died peacefully Wednesday, June 15, 2011,
at her home in Greensburg,
surrounded by her children.
She was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Bradford,
the daughter of the late Ray and Isabelle (Bonner) Cooper. After graduating from Elmira College, she dedicated her life to the love of her life and husband, James Charley, and to raising her six children, first at their log cabin and farm on Stoney Springs Road and then at their home in Greensburg.
She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church
and both she and James supported many charities and causes in the greater Greensburg/Pittsburgh area. Grace, lovingly known to her friends as Coop or GG, was wonderfully creative in artistic endeavors, seeing the world in new ways that came together in the works that adorned her home and many of those lucky enough to have known her. She will be fondly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 2005; and her sister, Betty Shannon.
She is survived by five sons, Robert H. Wright Jr., of Warrenton, Va., Cooper L. Wright and his wife, Linda, of Warrenton, Va., Christopher Charley, of Greensburg, Ray Charley and his wife, Kate, of Greensburg, and David Charley and his wife, Rika, of Tokyo, Japan;
one daughter, Rebecca Williams and her husband, Jonathan, of Higganum, Conn.;
one sister, Donna Archer, of Vero Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family will be forever thankful and grateful for the dedication and loving care that was shown to us and to our parents by Magalita Pierre-Louis, RN. Truly an angel among us, Maggie became part of our family in 2005 and has been a steady and loving hand through the final days for both Grace and James. We would also like to acknowledge the gentle care that Grace received from her caregivers, Nancy Bemis and Amber Zelinsky. We have been fortunate to have had these women in our lives at this time. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1120 Harvey Ave., Greensburg. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Westmoreland Hospital Foundation, 532 West Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, PA 15601 or to the American Red Cross-Haiti Relief Fund, 351 Harvey Ave., Greensburg, PA 15601. Terence L. Graft, funeral director, entrusted with the arrangements.
(Pennsylvania - Pittsburgh Tribune)

Westminster Presbyterian Church, "
Death of Scarface Charley - 1896

Taken from the Cherokee Advocate, Oklahoma, 26 December 1896

AN INDIAN CHIEF DEAD

Seneca, Missouri, December 10 - There is much sorrow among the Modoc Indians on the Quapaw reservation in the Indian Territory, four miles northwest of this city.

Their head chief, Scarface Charley is dead. He died yesterday after a lingering illness of several months duration and which the physicians pronounced pneumonia consumption. His age is unknown but h was without doubt over eighty years. His hair and beard were streaked with gray. On his arrival at the reservation twenty-three years ago he was next in rank to Captain Jack Schonchin, the noted Modoc cheif and was with him and met in conference with the United States commissioners General Canby and others, April 11, 1873, near the lava beds in Oregon and at which time General Canby and Dr. Thomas were killed and Mr. Mercham and an other commissioner wounded. It is said Scarface Charley fired the shot that broke up the conference and hostilities were resumed principally among the lava beds, a volcanic region which served as a natural fortification. He finally surrendered to General J. C. Loomis, June 1, 1873.

Some years ago he professed religion and since that time has been a leader in the church and Sunday school and was respected by Indians and whites alike.

A private grave yard contains the remains of three of his children. The tombstones can be seen from the door of his residence. He leaves a wife and three children.

These are my family surnames! I hope you reply to me even though the message is a year old. I would love all information that you have. I am descended from Mary Agnes Charley of Chicago and whose mother was a Davern, I think. I remember my mom talking about "Granny Dyer" as well. Please write back!

Irish Ancestors: CHARLEY, DYER, DAVERN

Researching Surnames: Charley, Dyer, Davern. Some sime between 1840(birth) and 1860(marriage) Patrick Charley and Mary Jane Dyer came to USA from Ireland. Son William Charley, born 1862, married Mary Davern who also came from Ireland. All this documented, but can't find where in Ireland they came from and where is USA they were naturalized (or if). Have much info to share.
