My roots include Sharkey/Chartier as well. The name did seem to change because of pronunciation. I have traced the S/C roots to the Quebec Canada area. I recall seeing some branches in Michigan. To further confound the issue, my Chartier ancestor was a John Carter as a lad. He lived in Deefield, Mass. with his family. Look up Deefield Massacre in Google. A French/Indian raid in the 1600s resulted in him being marched to Quebec during the winter, only 3 of his kin surviving the march. His father, Samuel, was away at the time of the raid and spent a lot of time trying to ransom them. My ancestor John Carter at age 13 was placed with the Jesuits and subseequently changed to Roman Catholic, took the name Jean Chartier and refused to return to the United States.

I am sure that some of Jean Chartier's descendants wound up in Michigan. My branch settled in Illinois and the 81st Sharkey reunion is set for Aug 7 2011 at the Evergreen park in Lowell Indiana.

I live in California and cant attend.

wesleyj38@hotmail.com

I'm 11 years late to the party but have started researching my family tree and this Pierre is my 2nd great grandfather. Oddly enough, I find myself purely by chance and without ever knowing its significance, living in Quebec myself. I am incredibly interested in history now and also my lineage. My mother's maiden name was Chartier and I would like to find as much information about her family for her while she is still alive. She was born in Gloversville, NY and fits nicely into this equation.

Our Chartier family had over 100 acres in Northville and when I was a little boy I remember visiting during the summers. There is still a house on Chartier Road that has been in the family for some 200 years from what I recall being told. It is a dirt road and there are only 3 homes on it. My relatives still own it and family members still live there to this day.

My mother is so taken with this area that she wrote about it in a fictionalized novel called "The House On Slocum Road." She has been inside the house, I have not I do have memories of the farms, but as the family has aged the children have sold much of the land and what remains apparently gets leased out as there don't seem to be Chartiers left to toil in the fields.

Vernon has provided me with some wonderful information and I am trying hard to connect the dots. I'll have to bring my mother in to read these boards and see how well she fares.

This is fascinating, to say the least!

This is a different Pierre Chartier. All of the records in the U.S. indicate that your Pierre was born in 1833. Besides, he married Rosella in 1855. I doubt very much that he was only 15 when he married Rosella.

My mother wrote a fictionalized historical account of her family in Northville which stems around the house Harold built on Chartier Road or Street. Our family had about 100 acres with farms and I used to visit during the summer as a kid. Her book is called "The House on Slocum Road" and it is filled with fictionalized Northville/Civil War info.

Check out an except from her site if you like: http://dahrisclair.com

I just sent a message to my uncle that I just found yesterday on Facebook to see if he remembers anything. I can send you the pages in my computer showing the family of Pierre Chartier and Rosella Desinguer and the families of their children. Each page has some text about each family that I have found from church records, census records, etc. For your information I met Harold Chartier at a hearing in New York State in the early 1970's. Like him I am an electrical engineer, and we were both expert witnesses at this hearing. We had no idea how we were related at that time; and I still have very little idea. But, I have some clues.

Pierre Raphael (Peter Rolf) Chartier was born in New York State on 21 Feb 1860. He was baptized at St-Alphonsus in Glens Falls, NY on 04 Mar 1860. He was one of 15 children born to Pierre Chartier and Rosella Desinguer. Pierre Chartier was born in Canada, but at this time we do not know the names of his parents. The 1900 census says Pierre immigrated to the U.S. in 1851 which was well outside of the time land grants were being given to veterans of the Revolutionary War. My records show that Louis-Arthur Chartier was born on 09 Feb 1857 and was baptized at St-Alphonsus on 26 Apr 1857. According to family members, Louis lived in San Francisco.

I am looking for information relative to where he was born in Canada and especially his parents names/location, etc.

One of his sons, Peter Robb (1857) was married to my great grandmother, Charlotte (Lottie) Slocum and they had around 100 acres in Northville or Mayfield, Fulton County, NY. The road that his house was built on is named after my uncle Harold Chartier.

Peter Robb Chartier was born in 1857 and may have had a twin brother, Louis. I am unsure as to the Robb in his name, but this is what my mother vaguely remembers.

I don't know if perhaps this land was granted to his family for serving in the American Revolution or not, but supposedly the property has been in the family for almost 200 years.

Any information would be most appreciated.

Poking around some of the family sites at ancestry.com, it appears that Marie-Renee-Ursule Chartier de Lotbiniere was an illegitmate daughter of Rene-Louis Chartier de Lotbiniere II. My understanding of the Catholic church records, if a child is born out of wedlock, the parents are not listed when the child is baptized nor when the child marries. The priest must have felt it was okay to list her as an adoptive daughter of Sieur Jean Cugnet, but he wasn't allowed to give the names of her biological parents even if he knew their names. I have seen this before in the greater Chartier family. So, we can only wonder who her mother was and why she was adopted by Sieur Jean Cugnet.

Marie Renee Ursule Chartier DeLotbiniere is the daughter of Rene Louis Chartier (1681-1718)Grand-daughter of Rene Louis Chartier DeLotbiniere(1641-1709). She was born in 1700 or 1703. The mother is listed as unknown. On the marriage record to Joseph Arcand in 1718, she is named as the adopted daughter of Sieur Jean Cugnet. She signed her name "Marie Renee Chartier" I have seen the photograph of this document. I am wondering why the mother would be listed as unknown. Anyone have a guess??? LLD1611@aol.com

I was born, Deborah Ann Chartier to Edwin Lionel Chartier and Joye Rita Hebert in New Orleans LA on Oct. 29, 1954. I do not know the story of why my father left and never returned. My mother never spoke of him and lied to me when I asked about this man named Ed whom I remembered with unconditional love in my heart. Now I know he did exist and I am trying to find him. Any information will be greatly appreciated. I hope to find out the truth and learn more about who I am and where I come from. I last heard Edwin Chartier was living in California. I am now living in Arizona and hope to find him. Any word would be welcome.

Hi. I saw your post on Ancestry.ca. I am also working on my family tree and Alfred is on my database. You asked about Alfred Chartier married to Celinire Fortin and the uncertainty of Alfred or Wilfred. I remember my father speaking of his uncle Alfred. My grandfather was Charles Chartier married to Marie Gauthier. Charles was the son of Pierre Chartier and Genevieve Godu.

I'd love to hear from you to see if there are more connections we can help each other with.

this person is my brother, who is serving time for the same crime of his father. we did not get molested by our father, my brother never had contact with him since birth. When I originally posted my search I did not know that he was in prison for molesting boys. He died a few years ago in prison and now his son has taken his place. I am glad that he is finally found out and now my mother knows that I was not lying although she will never admit that she knew who he was and should have done something before he could harm others (his own grandchildren)! I never allowed my brother around my own children because I knew who he was and I am very happy that he is now in a place where he cannot harm any more children and I hope he stays there because he will do it again i am sure

Based upon Kenrick's research, it looks like Caroline Diagle married Alexander Chartier and somehow the name got changed to Shavkey. In your research have you ever seen any other spellings or pronunication of Shavkey? Even though it appears Joseph Frederick was biologically a Pickrem; he isn't the first person to be adopted into a Chartier family.

A Chartier that has done a lot of research in Court Houses without physically going there told me that this is what he has done. He says he normally he calls the Clerk of Court. He said every court should have one. Then he simply ask whether the record he is looking for is considered public. If it is and hasn't been sealed for one reason or another then he asks how to proceed in getting a copy and what the fee would be. Then he asks if they can fax or scan and e-mail the document to him. This can be very convenient for them, especially if they don't charge for the document.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you find anything.

I live in Kentucky so its hard for me to get into the Courthouse in Monroe to get this information. Do you think I actually need to physically go there to the courthouse or should I be able to call them and have them fax it or mail it to me? What would be the best way for me to get this marriage, death, and birth certificates. I think that would map a LOT but I find it hard since I live in Kentucky. :-( Thanks again for your help!

It is pretty clear based upon your good research that your Shavkey family is connected to the Joseph Chartier that is in Monroe County in the 1850 census. All of the Chartiers that came to Michigan came from Quebec. But, all of the records indicate that this Joseph Chartier came from France or at least was born in France. The overwhelming majority of the Chartiers in the U.S. were at one time Quebecois; but there are exceptions. I have found Chartiers in Louisiana, Chicago, and San Francisco that came to the U.S. directly from France.
My guess is that how Chartier became Shavkey is that someone in Monroe County spelled the name Sharkey (lot of Sharkeys, Shorkeys, Shirkeys, etc. in Michigan who were Chartiers, and the "r" in the spelling looked like a "v" to others and somehow the name stuck.
Have you searched for birth, marriage and death records at the Monroe County courthouse?
All the information you have found is the same info that puzzles me.

- My father didnt know too much about his dad and all the info that was told to "anyone in a generation before me were either lies or misconstrued. So Alex Shavkey is as far as anyone ever knew. Said he was an old man that everyone in town called him "Mr. Shavkey". Maybe adopted but no one really knew.

- During my research I asked about the name and what not but I was told that for sound codes our name was the same code as Savage or Sauvage. But nothing matched with this name. So I found that Sharkey came from Chartier. I was always called "Sharkey" by mistake so made me think that Shavkey came from Sharkey so yeah.

- Also I traced the censuses to Joseph and Angelique Chartier which seemed to match my family's lineage. Joseph Fred Shavkey was under the care of Alex and Caroline but as a Grandson at first then became a son. So I am guessing that he may have been a family members son and passed off to them to take care of and his parents never returned. So Alex and Caroline took him in as their own and considered him their son. Joseph may have been adopted or another family's son. In which case I have no clue. I do know, based on census that Caroline Degg (Diagle), Joseph Fred Shavkey, and Martha Shavkey (Burbo) lived in the same house so Joseph was taking care of his "mother" Caroline while she was old. Joseph Fred's parents were born in Vermont by another census that I looked but I cant find any "Shavkeys" in Vermont. Check this out and see what this may tell you. This helped me a lot and maybe you may be able to get SOMETHING a little more from it than I.

http://seekingmichigan.cdmhost.com/seeking_michigan/discover...

Marcean is Marcellus in the Census but I believe it is the same person. This helped me match Joseph and Angelique Chartier to my family. What may you get from it?

That is pretty much all the information that I know or have on my Shavkey side. It is more important than any other because I want to find my DIRECT lineage. Thank you for any and all of your help!

(Bad thing is I cant find any birth or marriage certificates that help out at all. Heck, not even a death certificate. Very hard in this case too)

There is a Joseph and Angelique Chartier family in Ash (Monroe), Michigan in the 1850 census. They have a son Alex who was born in Michigan in ca 1843. Is this the Chartier family that you think might be your Shavkey family? It kind of makes sense because in the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census Alex Shavkey says his father was born in France and his mother was born in Canada which is where the 1850 census says Joseph and Angelique were born, respectively. What does not make sense, however, is that Caroline Shavkey in the 1900 census says she is the mother of no children; however, she has a grandchild. But, in the 1910 census she says she is the mother of one child, but does not say whether that child is living or not. I can see where the 1900 census says Frederick is a grandson; but there are family pages on ancestry.com that says he is a son. Were you able to find this Shavkey family in the 1860 and 1870 censues? I could not. For your information I have over 50 different spellings for the Chartier surname. Shavkey is one I have not seen; but it would not surprise me if it is another variation on the Chartier name.
Oh, another confusion is that there is a Joseph Fred Shavkey who registered for the WWI draft in Berlin Township (Monroe), Michigan. But in this registration he says he was born on 29 Aug 1882 in Carlton, Michigan. He also says in this registration that he has a wife and a mother that he cares for.

Chartier to Shavkey?????

I have been researching as much as I can and come to find out Chartier was changed to Shorkey or Sharkey? (Due to Irish priests in Canada and US that couldnt pronounce names correctly? The thing is my last name is Shavkey, so if this name came from Chartier then how did Shavkey not turn out to be Sharkey or Shorkey. I am stuck in between somewhere though. I have a Joseph Fredrick Shavkey B:FEB 1889 Carleton, Monroe Co, Michigan D:28 MAY 1950 Trenton, Wayne Co., Michigan. Then its gapped to Alex Shavkey B:NOV 1842 Michigan.

I know that Alex was the grandfather of Joseph but I dont have the mother or father of Joseph OR the parents of Alex. This is where I think the Chartier name may come into play. If anyone may have any info on this matter please please please let me know. You are more than welcome to check out my family tree as well as that may help a little? Not sure! Thanks!

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/16860787/family/pedigree?fpid...

Re: Philomene Chartier

There were two other Philomene Cyrier's in Kankakee County. One of them was married to Etienne Cyrier. What I believe about Philomene's death year is that the type setter must have messed up. Instead of 1868; it probably was 1886. The article said she was about 46 years old. That would make her being born in ca 1840 whereas we know she was born in Chambly on 03 Aug 1837. That would make her about 48 or 49 when she died.
Since Philomene is your great great great grandmother and her brother, Leandre is my great great grandfather, I believe that makes us third cousins, once removed which is fairly close.
If you contact me at vlchartier@ieee.org, I will share a lot more stuff about our Chartier family including the fact that we have a slight tinge of Indian blood that comes from the Boisseau side of the family. Remember, Leandre and Philomene's parents were Francois Chartier and Josette Boisseau.

The only death record I have been able to turn up is for a Philomene Cyrier dated June 30, 1902 and she was married at the time of death. I'm pretty sure this is not the correct Philomene. I'm basing that on oral family history having the story told that BOTH Henry Amedee's parents died when he was a young teen. I found a Federal Mortality Schedule with a J Bap/Bass Cyrier that died the year ending 31 May 1880, The date of the 1880 Census with "Fanny" and the kids was 7 June 1880. Very possibly the right J Cyrier.

In 1888, the time he got married, Henry would have been 23-24, so that leads me to think that Philomene died between 1880-85.

I've been in contact with a researcher at the KVGS and she beleives, based on dates, they may be buried in the old St. James cemetery at Lehigh. No log exist for this cemetery, so it would require a foot search. I live in CA so I can't do that, but I will search Find A Grave and see if anything turns up.

So if your g-g-grandfather was Leandre Chartier, possible brother of my Philomene Chartier, who is my g-g-g-grandmother, would that make us distant cousins?

What is interesting is that Philomene (Fanny) on the 1880 census says she has "heart disease" which is why she probably died fairly young, and you might be correct in that the death date was 1888 rather than 1868. We need to find a death record or a tombstone. In the previous book that I mentioned, "Portrait and Biographical Record", there is an article on Mose (Moise) Chartier. This article does not mention his sisters, but does mention his brothers. Four brothers served in the Civil War. One of the brothers was Leandre Chartier, my great great grandfather. In this article, it mentions that Francois (the father) while on a visit to Kankakee in 1869 to see his daughter, he took sick and died. It might have been Philomene, but her family was living in Otto when the 1870 census was taken. I believe another sister was living in Kankakee based upon an early Illinois marriage record, but I haven't nailed that one down as yet. If you type in Cyrier in the Illinois Marriage records, there are a number of Cyrier marriages in Kankakee County, but none for J.B. and Philomene. It makes sense that they were married in Kankakee County.

I'm 100% positive that the family on the 1870 census you mention IS the family. "Medie" is what Henry Amedee went by as a child/young man. On Henry's death certificate his father IS listed as John Cyrier mother Philomene C------ (Chartier). On his marriage record to Delia Savoie dated 8 Sept 1888, his father is listed as John B. Cyrier and mother Philomene Chartier. His name is given as "Meddie". I had assumed the John B. was an english translation of Jean-Baptiste a more traditional French-Canadian name.

So based on this data combined with the articles in "The History of Kakakee County" Fredrick dies in 1872 age 12, Victoria dies 1870 age 8, Matilda (a twin with Georginna??) dies in 1874-75 age 10. Matilda Victoria is not yet born.
I wonder if Philomenes death was 1888 not 1868 as stated in the article?? Why else would she appear on the census as a "widow" with all the same children??

Thank You for helping to peice this family together!

Do you know the names of Jean-Baptiste's parents or the names of any brothers or sisters? The reason I am asking is because in the book "Portrait and Biographical Record of Kanakakee County, Illinois (1893) there is an article on Noel Cyrier. His parents were Noel and Louise (Toupin) Cyrier. He had the following brothers and sisters: Elizabeth, John B., Mary, Matilda, Victoria, Oliver, Malvina, Ledger, Valeria, Adell, and Charlie E. This John B. Cyrier was born as John B. Cyrie in St-Luc (St-Jean County), Quebec in February 1833. Now, what is interesting is that Francois and Josette (Boisseau) Chartier's 11th child was Genevieve-Philomene Chartier. She was born in Chambly on 5 Mar 1838. And, the Fanny in the 1880 census was 42 which means she was born ca 1838. Is this a coincidence or what? Philomene "Shorkey" was living with her parents in Clinton County, New York when the 1850 census was taken. It does not make sense that Philomene was born ca 1822 because she would have had all of her children after she was 40 years old.
I found the family of Noel Cyrier, Sr. in the 1860 census. They were living in Manteno and the name is spelled "Sevier". John B and Philomene "Perrie" can be found in the 1860 census in Bourbonnais. In the household is Matilda, age 3 and John, age 1. John B and Philemon "Syvear" can be found in the 1870 census living in Otto Township. The children in the household are Matilda, age 4; Frederick, age 10; Victoria, age 8; George, age 7; Medie, age 5; Georgianna, age 4; and Lucien, age 2.
It appears based upon this information that the death year for Philomene is incorrect.
