Following is circumstantial evidence to support Martin Cheatham/Chatham of Wilkes Co. N.C. being the son of Robert Cheatham of Albemarle Co. Va.:

1. Martin Chatham named a son CHARLES MOORE Chatham. Robert Cheatham's wife Milly Moore had a brother CHARLES MOORE.

2. MARTIN Chatham's first name is the same as the surname of Milly Moore's mother Judith MARTIN. This surname is common in Albemarle Co. Va. & Amherst Co. Va.

3. The History of N.C. Vols. III & IV (1928) states that Martin Chatham was born 1803 in either Augusta Co. Va. or Western Va. Robert Cheatham was listed as head of household in the 1810 Albemarle Co. Va. census, with one male under 10 years old in the household. Albemarle Co. is adjacent to Augusta Co. and both are in western Va.

4. Robert Cheatham had children by his second wife who were named William Alexander, George, Caroline & Martha. Martin Chatham had children named William, Alexander, George, Caroline & Martha Chatham.

5. Martin Chatham also named one of his sons Robert Chatham as well as two daughters Sarah & Martha. It's believed that Robert Cheatham had two daughters by Milly Moore, named Patsy (Martha) & Sarah.

6. Martin Chatham's surname on his marriage record was recorded as CHEATHAM. Robert Cheatham also married his second wife Elizabeth Turnbill in Wilkes Co. N.C.

7. Robert Cheatham's presumed sister Alice Cheatham Suddith named a son MARTIN Suddith (also born c.1800-10, like Martin Chatham).

8. Martin Chatham's presumed sister Sarah Cheatham Curry named a son MARTIN Curry.

9. Robert Cheatham's daughter by his 2nd. wife, Ann Elizabeth Cheatham Carroll, named her first son MARTIN Henry Carroll.

I learned about this when I got my library card for Chatham County, but it looks like it might be available to anyone that has a library card at participating libraries in Georgia. By logging on to GALILEO, users can access a database called Heritage Quest which has online images of many (not all, though) US census records. I'm talking about the original records, not abstracts. I am seeeking information on the Chatham line on behalf of a third party who is/was related by marriage. I am trying to obtain contact information or any other information anyone may have regarding John Chatham Senior particulary regarding his late wife Mary who was from either Virginia or South Carolina, born about 1930 and died around 1970. John Senior would have possibly been living in or around St. Louis Missouri about 1970, and had a child with this Mary, who I believe was named John Junior (maybe born between 1965-1970). She died at home in Northwest Hills, TX 19 Mar 2004.
She was the granddaughter of Irish immigrants from County Kerry and was born in Chicago, Cooke COunty, IL and raised in Boone, Iowa.
She attended Iowa State University where she was a Homecoming Princess and a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
She worked as a dietician at Cooke County Hospital, she moved to Beaumont, TX where she met her future husnamd Rufus "Mack" Chatham ,a petroleum geologist and graduate of the University of Texas who had flown with th eBlack Sheep Squadron in WWII.
He was employed by Schlumberger Oil Drilling Services. They moved to Ft. Worth, TX where the operated Sundial, an outdoor furnishings store.
She moved to Westlake Hills in 1992, after her husband's death.
She was a genealogist who learned that Mack's ancestors came to Grimes County, TX in 1840 where they were granted a Third Class Head Right.
Survived by children Robert, John, Anne, Leslie and husband Buck; five grandchildren.
She was interresd with her husband Mack at Rememberance Gardens in Austin, TX..

Naomi Chatham (1881-1941) Madison Co, GA - Parents??

I'm trying to verify the parents of Naomi Chatham b.Jul 6, 1881 d.Jun 29, 1941, Madison Co, GA. Married Columbus Fortson abt. 1900.

The 1900 Franklin Co, GA census shows Columbus and Naomi (age 18) Fortson living 3 families away from a George and Ellen A Chatham. Ellen is listed as having 5 children, with 5 living. The only 4 children in the household are Robert A. (16), James H. (14), William B. (11), and Amaria? (8).

The 1910 Madison Co, GA census shows a James H. Chatham (24) living with Columbus and Naomi Fortson, listed as brother-in-law. So George and Ellen might be a good match for Naomi's parents.

Just to add some confusion, Naomi Fortson's death certificate lists father Silas Chatham, born GA, and no mother. However, I can find no Silas Chatham anywhere at the time of Naomi's birth.

Augustas Chatham of Shasta County, California?

Hello I'm wondering if there is any information out there on a Augustas Chatham, he may have been born in Shasta County, California, but I'm not sure. All I know is that he had one son named George Richard Chatham. I don't know who Augustas's wife was or George's wife was. I do know that that George had a son named John William Chatham and worked in the Copper City smelter, but that didn't work out for him cause of the choking fumes, then he was employed as a butcher. George got married to a Olive Meyer in 1901 and had 9 siblings two of the siblings were twins, but one twin died in infancy. This is what I know of this Chatham family. I'm just wondering if there is a DOB and DD for Augustas and wondering about his parents and so on. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I guess I'm wondering about who George's wife was too.

Looking for names of Rhoda Payne C's children. I've seen variant spellings of her husband's name. Rhoda and spouse would have been born abt 1820-1830; married abt 1845 -1850.

I'm a descendent of John Isham Cheatham (b1827) and Rhoda (? Payne) of Madison County, GA. Family records state Rhoda's last name was Payne. Census records only list her given name, Roda/Roday/Rhoda; b 1824-25.

Trying to determine if my family records are correct and if my Rhoda is a descendent of John Redbank.

Would like to check my list of Rhoda's children with your list to see if there are any striking similarities.

Franklin County included part of Madison County in earlier years. However, the current boundary between Madison and Franklin Counties was already set by the time of Rhoda's and John I.'s birth.

I am researching the Chatham family.gggrandma Jewell(Wood) Chatham seems to disapear. I can find her in 1860 with 3 children. In 1860 her husband William is living with his father Isaac in Davis Co. TN, but he has no children or wife listed. Later in 1870 census he does not list a wife, but my grandmother Jewel Chatham is listed as 3/5. along with the rest of the kids. Does anyone know what might have happened? William was born @ 1838. Jewel died in McAlister OK. She married a William Spencer Lester. Got anything for me?
