Charlotte Cheatham, Asha Allen and Hillman Cheatham are all indeed members of my family. Bear in mind that many former slaves used the same first and surnames names following the civil war, but may not have been blood relatives, most likely many were owned by different members of the white Cheatham family which was extensive within Vance/Granville counties. If you are in the early stages of studying Afro-American Cheatham families, than you must check into Henry P. Cheatham who served in Congress during reconstruction. He was born in Vance county, but later worked, lived and is buried in Oxford, NC. I'm not entirely sure he is a blood relative of mine, still doing research.

Greetings Kempoartist:
Thanks for your quick response. Its amazing, found both John Allen/John Cheatham in 1870--Fishing Creek and six family members have the exact same names. (different birth years) Could it be the same family.Interesting as well, in 1870 there is a Charlotte Cheatham b. 1800 in J.Cheathams household and in 1880 there is an Asha Allen b. 1800 in his son, Hillman HH.(?is Asha a nickname for Charlotte) I believe, if not the same family, then they must have been related or very close friends. Do you have any Afrian-American names associated with those other Cheatham families? I am in the beginners stage on the Cheatham line -- have not done study on other Cheatham.
In Search of Roots --- thanks again M

Hello Mary,

Some names in your message compare closely to several of my known family members. Other names partially compare; my great-great grandmother's name was Margaret Allen where as you mentioned a Margaret Floyd. If you can establish a connection to Fishing Creek, NC or Oxford, NC both located within Granville county then it's very possible we could be related, however I do know of at least three non-related African American Cheatham families in Granville / Vance county.

First of all, you need to find a direct Cheatham MALE ancestor, then convince him to test his DNA. You can get a DNA kit online I happen to like http://www.familytreedna.com/ best and that is where the Cheatham/Chatham DNA project has been established for any Cheatham needing a DNA test run. There are certainly other DNA companies but believe, me, they don't have the extensive resources that FTDNA does for matching. If you go through the Cheatham/Chatham project you can save a bit of money on the test. Mind you,it is NOT inexpensive to test DNA, but so well worth it! You will need to test a minimum of 37 markers, 67 markers is better for fine tuning, but you can certainly do 37 markers first to sort of see where you stand in the big Cheatham picture and upgrade to 67 markers later on if need be. FTDNA will post your results on the Cheatham/Chatham project page so you can compare results with other donors.

Hi,

I am searching for information on the man I think is my maternal grandfather, Bruce Cheatham.

Supposedly he lived in New York (in Orange County) and in Kentucky (unknown area).

No one left in the family to provide any information, so I'm not even positive of his first name. He would have been born circa 1915 so Bruce is probably a nickname or middle name.

ANY information is GREATLY appreciated.

cheers,
Marilyn

Cheatham DNA studies

Hello all you Cheathams out there. Did you happen to see on the recent viewing of the Civil War on PBS that a photo of one of our famous Cheatham's, General Benjamin Cheatham, was shown during the program? Pretty exciting! I wanted to let everyone know that there have been several Cheatham descendants of Thomas (Joe) and Marmaduke(Christopher) have had DNA studies done at FTDNA through the Dugger Project. The story being that my gggggm Lydia Dugger had 3 illegitimate children with Marmaduke Cheatham in 1747+ VA. Our quest was to see if descendants of Lydia's son John Dugger were indeed carrying Cheatham DNA. This was proven to be correct with the DNA studies, as tested from 3 different Cheatham direct line males. I would like to invite any direct line Cheathams (must be a male carrying the last name of Cheatham) to test their Y-DNA with the Dugger DNA Project. For further details please contact me. I am especially interested in descendants of Marmaduke, but any Cheatham is welcome to test through our project. PLUS you get a discount by going through our project! You can even set up a testing project of your own for Cheathams once enough tests are begun. This is a fantastic tool for family research and I urge you clarify your lineage by DNA testing.
Carol Dugger, Rio Vista CA

Do you know if there were any spelling variations with the Cheatham name in your family? My ggrandfather's name was Adam Cheatam. He was born in 1888 and in his later years he lived in LeCompte. I don't know if he was born there or not. I was told though that he took that name from the family who raised him. So if anything, I may be able to find out about the people who raised him.
