Re: seeking info on relatives of Edward H. Cherry

Dear Cherry Family Member,

I'm an American (Hoosier, too) living and working in Berlin, Germany. Over Easter my family and I vacationed in Belgium and visited the Flanders Field American Cemetery in Waregem, Belgium. Walking amongst the crosses in the small cemetery, I was looking at names, states and dates. From my observation there were only three soldiers from Indiana and one being Edward H Cherry.

Surfing around the internet out of curiosity looking for anything on the three Hoosiers, I stumbled on your entry below and thought I would drop a note.

His cross states:
Edward H Cherry
Pvt 1CL 362 Inf 91 Div
October 31, 1918

From what little I found this evening looking up the 91st Division, he likely fought and died in Belgium not far from the cemetery. The division was originally created from the Western States of Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and California. I'd be curious to know how three Hoosiers landed in this group.

Hope you find this interesting. I dabble in WWI history. No one from my family fought in WWI, so it is interesting to follow other people and names I find along the way.
Do you have any dates on that Joseph CHERRY? I've been looking for mine for 20 years!! Born 1818, in England he states on 3 censuses. However, after he died and his widow and 3 youngest sons migrated to NE, on the next census everybody says he was born in North Carolina! The mother was illiterate, she X'd Joseph's probate papers, but HER father was born in NC so the boys may have been thinking of that. Or they didn't want anybody to find Joseph! They've succeeded. He named his first two children Thomas Michael (Michael was the maternal grandfather's name) and Elizabeth Jane CHERRY. Was Thomas his father's name and either Elizabeth or Jane his mother's name? Sure would like to find out where he was born. I first find him at his marriage on 19 Aug 1841 in Alton, Madison, Illinois, to Amelia KILLION (Mealy KILHEW in the official records!!) Thanks!

I am descended from both Aaron Sr, Aaron Jr and John Thomas. Happy to help where I can with your research. Right now I am looking for an affidavit Homer Cherry had at one point (I saw it once on the web but didn't save a copy of it because I was new at this). The affidavit stated that Aaron Jr and another relative participated in the battle but were sick and thus not on the rolls. I know the research agrees that there was an epidemic in the Texan camp (measles? mumps? scarlet fever?). I wish I had a copy of the affidavit, not that I entirely believe it but just for documentation sake....

According to our family history, my great-great grandfather Thomas Cherry was born to Rebekah/Rebecca Rives. His father left or deserted them so Thomas became a bond servant on the Dabney plantation in/near DeKalb County, Tennessee. He was allowed to leave his servitude to join the Tennessee Volunteers during the Civil War. He was captured and part of a prisoner exchange, possibly at Vicksburg. After the war, he visited family near Bowling Green, Kentucky. There he and his first cousin, Rachel Rives, married. They then moved to Oklahoma or Indian Territory. They had a son Charlie and a daughter Della, my great grandmother. Della Cherry married John B. O'Dell, who was from east Texas (Honey Grove?). Their daughter, Ona Lou O'Dell, was my maternal grandmother, and she was born in Elk City. She married George Rufus Huckaby of Hobart, Oklahoma, and they settled, for a time, in Norman, Oklahoma. My father remembers his grandparents, Della Cherry O'Dell and John O'Dell, when he was a little boy in Norman, Oklahoma.

Somewhere I think I have a photo of Charlie Cherry at the Elk City homestead.

Hannah Huckaby

Re: CHERRY

I am hoping to find others who may be connected with this Cherry line in Williamson County, Tennessee.

SOME ROBINSON AND CHERRY INFORMATION

The Robinson line, as mentioned above, begins with Dora Bell Robinson who was born on 23 September 1860 in or near Williamson County, Tennessee and died on 13 January 1907 in Bedford County, Tennessee. She married William Winston Eads on 26 January 1886. She was the daughter of William Girth/Garth Robinson and Louisa A. Cherry. Louisa A. Cherry is the daughter of William Cherry and Rebecca. I believe this is Rebecca Bell.

William G. Robinson was born February 1831 in or near Williamson County, Tennessee and died after 1900. He was married to Louisa A. Cherry on 23 December 1857 in Williamson County, Tennessee by J.F.M. Christopher, J.P. According to Mary Angnes DeBernardi William G. Robinson is buried on the old home place and has no stone. She said that he wanted to be buried out under an apple tree where the children could play around. On 4 November 2001and 14 January 2005 she told me that William G. Robinson was a wagon master during the Civil War and that he married a Cherry. At this point in time I have not accounted for all of the children of William G and Louisa A. Cherry Robinson and will go by census records and the information from Mary Agnes Debernardi to fill in the gaps. Some of the Robinson children include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. John L. Robinson was born circa 1859 in Williamson County, Tennessee. Mary Agnes at one time said that lightening killed him, but later said that Tom was killed by lightening. (As pointed out by Margaret Ann Reid Manneschimdt this must have been Tom because their Uncle John was living in Oklahoma and met momma (Margaret Eads) at the train as stated in her 1910 letter. 11 October 2009)

2. Dora Bell Robinson was born circa 1861 in Williamson County, Tennessee and married William Winston Eads (See notes above)

3. William Robinson was born circa 1863 in Williamson County, Tennessee.

4. Margaret (Maggie) Robinson was born circa 1865 in Williamson County, Tennessee.

5. Mary (Mollie) Caroline Robinson was born circa November 1866 in Williamson County, Tennessee. Mary Agnes said that Mollie Caroline Robinson married Robert V. Glass (7 October 1886 Rutherford Co.) and died of the flu. She was buried on the farm circa 1900 and her husband and her brother Tom watched over her grave for a week. They hung a lantern on a tree so they could shoot anyone who bothered the grave, grave robbers. Mary Agnes also said Mollie looked “Indian.” Mollie had a daughter, Margaret (Maggie) Bell Glass, who was named after Rebecca Bell. The 1900 Williamson County census, district 17, page 1, sheet A lists Robert O (V) Glass 38 (Feb. 1862 tobacco roller) Mollie 33 (Nov. 1866) Maggie 12 (Feb. 1889) Robert 10 (Mar. 1890) Nina 8 (Mar. 1892) Lee 6 (May 1894) Edward 2 (June 1897) and Hattie 110 months (July 1899)

6. Emma Belle Robinson was born (?) Signed sister Dora’s Memory Book on 22 March 1885.

7. Ella Pearl Robinson was born circa 1873 in Williamson County, Tennessee. She married her sister Mollie’s husband, Robert V. Glass, after Mollie died. She had two daughters by him, Mamie Pearl Glass and unnamed who died when she was two years old. The 1910 Grady, Oklahoma census, page 7 lists Robert V. Glass 47 (Missouri, VA, VA) Ella P. 37 (TN, TN, TN) Mamie F. 7 (OK) Robert W. 20 (TN) Nina M. 18 (TN) Thomas Lee 15 (TN) Edward M. 13 (TN) and Gertrude Avery 21. The 1930 Fort Worth, Tarrant Texas census lists Robert V. Glass 68, living with his son Robert W. Glass, wife Bertha C. and family. Robert V. Glass was born on 17 February 1862 in Missouri and died of “Chronic Tuberculosis” at 1800 Stella Street in Tarrant County, Texas at the age of 71 on 11 July 1933. Informant, son Robert W. Glass, lists Robert’s father as “Glass-VA” and mother as “Wilson-TN) He was buried at Park Lawn Cemetery (Death Certificate #34417)

8. Tom Robinson was born circa 1875. Mary Agnes said that her Uncle Tommy was struck and killed by lighting while watching a storm from his porch in Tennessee.

Notes: Mary Agnes said her cousin John Cherry was a bachelor and owned large farms. His father was Buck Cherry. Cousin John Cherry would say, “Mary, your great grandmother wore a blanket. Mother later wrote to her and said that her mother, Mary (Mollie) Caroline Robinson, was part Cherokee.” William Cherry was born ca. 1789 in Virginia and Rebecca Bell was born ca. 1793 in North Carolina. They were married in Davidson County, Tennessee on 9 July 1814. Rebecca Bell Cherry was said to be Indian, perhaps Cherokee. Kate Robinson was a cousin and her father, Charley Robinson, went to the Indian Territory, Chickasha, Oklahoma.

In a letter dated 13 January 2003 Mary Agnes Ferguson Debernardi wrote and said: “When reading Maggie Ead’s letter to Henrietta Eads from Chickasha, Oklahoma (where I was born) Charley Robinson is who my momma (Margaret/Maggie Bell Glass Ferguson) told me was why my Grandfather Robert Vincent Glass went to Indian Territory after my Grandmother Mollie Caroline Robinson Glass died. My mother was oldest of six children and she became their mother until Grandpa sent for them all to come from Arno, Tennessee to Oklahoma on the train (three years later.) Then later Grandpa sent for Ella Pearl Robinson (my grandmother Mollie’s youngest sister) and they married in Chickasha, Oklahoma. They had one daughter, Mamie Pearl Glass. She is still alive, 92, in Oregon. Then Grandpa sold his furniture store in Chickasha and moved to Fort Worth, Texas and he and Ella had another daughter. She died when she was two years old. I have more papers on the Robinson family, but they must be packed.” Mary Agnes said her Grandpa Robert V. Glass had a stove business and always wore a derby.
Hi, I know that it has been several years since this thread started, but I am curious about the same family line. If you are still researching, I would love more information on the Cherry family. I don't know a lot about this side of my family, but like your wife I go back to Adeline Alene Cherry married to Bryant Buffaloe, they would be my ggg grandparents. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting. I don't think your Aaron Cherry goes back as far as mine, who was born probably about 1735-40 ish. There were many Aaron Cherrys though.

Of further interest is your grandmother's married name Coward. My great great Grandmother was a daughter of Hardy Coward of Louisiana, near Lake Charles, and I can't think of her name now. She was the mother of Julia Anna Gill Iles my great grandmother who married Howell William Iles. Hardy Coward is a DAR patriot I believe but I've never filed on him. The Cowards lived in Mississippi and West Louisiana. Maybe her (my gg grandmother) name was Elizabeth Coward and she married Dr. John Gill, the Gills were from the Brookhaven area of Mississippi.

I am sorry I have been so long in getting back to you...when I first started researching my family tree I knew that my grandmother Minerva Pearl Griffin Coward was supposed to be some kin to Marion Crow..I spoke to his widow and found out that supposedly his mother, who was a cherry was half sister to my great grandmother, who, as she recalled was married to aaron Cherry and that her name was sarah (sally) well, I went to Milam County and uncovered a marriage license between aaron and sarah..and pursued that fact for several months...only to find out that my great grandmother, Minerva Pearl Griffin was the child of Henry Clay Griffin and Pearl Wiggins...this was from a death certificate that was filled out by my Aunt, my Mothers oldest sister, so I abondoned looking for the cherry connection...however, I heard all my life that there was a cherry connection..and I may discover later that there is...there is certainly no evidence of any other parents other than what i learned from minervas death certificate...so goes the life of an ancester searcher..thanks for your reply...edith

I have Sarah Cherry in my line b. about 1870 (Green Castle, Warren County, KY)and married to Augustus Satterfield. They divorced 30 Mar. 1891. A son, William, was b. 5 May 1893.
I have found no other information about Sarah or the son.

I did find a Sarah Cherry and an Adam Cherry who appear to be related. I also found one document indicating that a Sarah Cross may have married and became Sarah Cross.

If you have information, I would be so happy to find out something.
You may contact me
happy1n2@centurylink.net
Ron Satterfield
grandson of Civil War Veteran Augustus Satterfield

This is my line of descendancy from him.

Aaron Cherry
Sarah Cherry (b. circa 1803) m. Dempsy Iles (b. 1796 d. 1871)
Howell William Iles (b. 1833) (son) m. Julia Anna Gill (b. ca. 1838-1924)
John Gill Iles (son) (1867-1949) m. Julia Emma Miller (1886-1981)
Howell Cyril Iles (son) (b. 1909 d. 1994) m. Olga Mae Rodrigue (1919-2005)
Paula Marie Iles Restrepo (daughter) (1951) m. John Focion Restrepo (b. 1951)

Aaron Cherry was my great great great grandfather, and since there were several late age marriages in my line, there are not as many generations between me an him as there are usually with people of my age to that time.

I have the exact birth and death dates of the above except Aaron of course and used to have them in my memory but I put circa since I wasn't 100% sure, I'm pretty close. I know my grandparents and parents exactly though.

Well you are ahead of me on the research as you probably know as much as I do then, because I have never been to the Sam Houston library. Do you know who had the original painting of Aaron Cherry? It was noted that a Gilliland woman had credit for it in the book about that area, of which I have a copy. I had a negative made of that picture of his portrait. He looks like a wild eyed character. I do think that the Atascocita Census of 1820 proves that Aaron did not live to be 110 years old. I would think you might have more info on him since you live in that area. I had heard rumor that the Daniels family had a girl who'd married into the Cherry family and that they had some personal effects like Bible from Aaron Cherry that they kept pretty secret. That's hearsay though.

Thank you for your quick response.
I was born and raised in Liberty, Tx.
I have been to the Sam Houston Library in Liberty, many times, have viewed the many pictures of Aaron Cherry and looked at the geneology they have stored there.
I live now in Weatherford, Tx.
My gr.grandmother was Ellen Alma Cherry, married to my gr.grandfather,Zack Crow or "Grandad." I remember my gr.grandfather, as a child, However"Gran," as the family called her, had already passed. But, I viewed many, many pictures of her travels with mule packs and other places. My gr.grandfather owned many properties, including the "Crow's Nest,"the family ranch. I had visited there a multitude of times. My grandmother was Jewel Vitas Crow, daughter of Zack and Alma.
I want to know how far down the Aaron Cherry tree, we are related. I know about the grave marker that I personally viewed on the Daniels Plantation Ranch.
I have viewed the pictures in the Sam Houston Library and my dad's brother looks a lot like him!
I would greatly appreciate more info.

Margaret, it's been years since I fooled with this research, but I'll try to drag it out and send you what I have. Do you have an address? There is a library somewhere in your area that has a whole section devoted to Aaron Cherry. I can't remember the name of it presently. I'll get back with you. Send me an address to my email at Restrepo2009@aol.com. I live in Dallas, was raised in Port Arthur, TX. My grandfather John Iles was born in the Sugartown LA area and his grandparents were Dempsy Iles and Sarah Cherry Iles, daughter of Aaron.

Best.

Hi,

I am looking for the family of my 4th great grandmother, Merina Cherry (Gainer). She was born in North Carolina in about 1801, was married to Jesse Gainer in Davidson County Tennessee in 1819, and lived later in Henry County Tennessee and Van Buren County Arkansas.

I had thought her parents were William W. and Lydia Cherry, because William's will lists a daughter named Merina. I recently realized this isn't her though, because William and Lydia's daughter Merina never married and died in Stewart county TN in 1854.

Any information about the Cherry family in Davidson County TN would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Madeline

Hi,

There is no dishonor here - just an honest mistake. Aaron's great-uncle was the Aaron that fought in the Revolutionary War. Serious genealogists (as you are) follow the evidence (as you do).

My husband is the gggg-grandson of Aaron. We have a house in Liberty County and visit the Sam Houston Regional Library often. We also have tried to assist other persons in correcting the mistakes but to no avail.

If you have an opportunity to visit there, please do so. Lots of interesting records, much of which was compiled by Homer, including interviews with my husband's parents.

Best, Linda Dudley Cherry

Edgar Willis Cherry

Just began researching my family, and it has been an eye-opening and incredible journey so far!

I am Christine (Cherry), and my great-great-grandfather was Edgar Willis Cherry, born in Auburn, NY on 16 July, 1835. He lived with Henry and Mary (Cherry) Hogle when he was 14, but the Hogles were not his parents, as Mary was only 7 years older than Edgar. He married Frances (Munger) in Wisconsin in 1856, and had two children (William and Jesse) before fighting for 3 years in the Civil War. His face is all over the internet on history lesson plan websites, because he received a gun shot wound to the face which disfigured him, and Frances wrote a letter after he died to request an increase in his pension.

With all of the information available, I cannot find his parents, and thus follow the Cherry name back to wherever it goes. I've gone further back than anyone in my family, so talking to relatives has given me no insight.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated!

Thank you,
Christine
