John, I found the following on Ancestry (also scroll further down to see my additional comments).

John Roscoe Chesterton (son of John Chesterton and Rose Dorr) was born November 01, 1877, and died 1953. He married Rita Batson, daughter of Ellis W. Batson and Ada Crowley.

Children of John Roscoe Chesterton and Rita Batson are:

John....The following is an email I sent to an Ann Wilson circa 2004 concerning a Newell R. Chesterton of Jonesport (who may have been related to John Roscoe Chesterton):
"The 1900 Census for Newell R. Chesterton indicates he was 17 at the time and living in Jonesport, Maine with a family named Gunnings (at least that's what I can make out...the census is hard to read). Samuel Gunnings was the head and the wife looks to be "ROSE". Rose and Samuel were both born in Maine. Newell is listed as their son, but it says Newell's father was born in England. So Newell must be Rose's child by a prior marriage OR Newell was
adopted by the Gunnings. Mr. Gunning was a Postmaster."

So it appears that John Roscoe Chesterton's mother Rose had two marriages. Perhaps you can find her living with each of her husbands, by checking the various census records. Hope this helps. -Rita Chesterton

Attention all CHESTERTON researchers. There is now at CHESTERTON DNA PROJECT at www.FamilyTreeDNA.com

Two Chesterton males have already requested DNA Test Kits. We now await their results and a chance to compare their markers.

As you know, the surname Chesterton is Anglo-Saxon, deriving from any one of the various places called Chesterton, in Cambridgeshire, Gloucestershire, Huntingdonshire, Oxfordshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire. By becoming a participant in the new Chesterton DNA Project, you will have a chance to compare your own DNA with the DNA of all participating Chesterton males. If your markers are a match, it means you share a common ancestor within a certain timeframe. Sorry it's taken so many years to get back to you but I'd forgotten tha I'd posted anything at all. However, I'm John Chesterton of Jonesport Maine . I'm 55 yeras old. My father was Dr. Bert Chesterton ( since deceased) . His father was Allan B. Chesterton and his father was John Roscoe Chesterton. That's as much as I know about my family on the Chesterton side.

My great-grandmother is lited on the 1850 Census in Walker County, GA as Martha Chesterton/Chesterson. She is at that point living with her grandfather and grandmother, Talifero Butler. She was born in May 1838, some places list her as being born in Tennessee and others Alabama. If you have any information it would be greatly appreciated. Evidently her mother died before she was 12 and she went to live with her maternal grandparents. I find nothing about her father. Her uncle adopted her and she became known as Martha Butler after that. Only in the 1850 census did we find her true last name.

Ann... you need to update your personal email address that's posted on this site. My messages to you keep bouncing back to me.

Infospace.com shows Newell and Caroline Chesterton living in Hendersonville, TN and also
Gallatin, TN. The number is probably a cell phone. Perhaps you could call a neighbor(some search directories provide 'neighbor' information).

Did you not find them in Tennessee, per Carey Gil's response dated 2003? I am not familiar with this branch of Chesterton's, although I do remember talking to someone in Big Bear back in the 1990's when I began researching my own branch.

His father was the top executive with Cia de Seguros La Fenix peruana.

It will probably take a while. I live in N. Ca now, but I might be able to convince my parents to dig around the next time they go up there.
I love Aunt Leanna and Uncle Vernon! They're the only relatives on the Chesterton side that we still see occasionally (rarely). Tell them that I said hello! I'll let you know when/if we can locate anything!

My maiden name is Chesterton and I have a little info on our family. My grandfather was Newell R. Chesterton II (1907-1992) and he was from Conn., although they also had relatives in Maine. He moved out to CA and there is a large, extended Chesterton family out here.
Unfortunately I don't know much more information back further on the family tree, except that his father is Newell I and they were from the East Coast.... probably we are relatives! Good luck in your search! Try looking on Yahoo yellow pages or phone book for Chestertons in CA-- you'll find quite a few!

Hi Carey - Your grandmother ( Esta) did an extensive research on the Chesterton's and even went to Maine and took pictures and did interviews. I know this because she is my aunt. I would love a copy of it if you have it. Thanks!

My ancestors, Michael Griffy/Hannah Chesterton were mar in Shen. Co.,VA in 1789. They had a son Nathaniel who mar Rebecca Baker, who had Nathaniel Griffy. Hannah was at Pine Forge near New Market, VA in 1820. Nathaniel went to Del. Co. IN, mar Sarah Hurley, d Richmond, IN 1891.Would like any info re the birthplace of Hannah Chesterton.

My name is John Chesterton and I am looking for information on other Chesterton families in the United States. I grew up in Jonesport Maine and never heard of other families with my name. My family has almost no knowledge of who we are and where we came from except for the famous G.K Chesterton. Anyone who can help me piece together where the Chesterton family came from originally as well as the when, why and how they came to America would be appreciated. I am interesting in any information about John Chesterton, c 23 Apr 1710 St Anne Soho, Westminster, London. His father was Nicholas and his mother Mary, and he married Temperance. He was an ancestor of the famous writer G K Chesterton. He appears to have divied his time between Soho and Cheveley, nr Cambridge.
