William Cathcart (age 30, blind) in 1850 census, Dallas County, Alabama (w/ Thomas & Mary [Craig] Chestnut)

Trying to solve the mystery of whether or not this William is a Cathcart or a Chestnut.

William first appears—the last person entered in the household, which normally indicates that he is not part of the family—as a Cathcart, aged 30 and "blind." The head of household is Thomas Chestnut (1806-1883) and his wife, Mary [Craig] Chestnut (1814-1856). The census is for the Cahawba District, Dallas County, Alabama.

However, in subsequent census enumerations for 1860 and 1870 (both in Dallas County, Alabama), William is listed as a Chestnut—but always "blind."

I've always assumed that William moved in with family or friends after his mother died in about 1847. As he was blind, I guessed that his father, Samuel Cathcart (born about 1784 in South Carolina), and his younger brother, Samuel (born about 1829), would not have been able to properly care for William, as they both would've been busy working on their farm. I have further assumed that Thomas and Mary eventually adopted William, giving him the Chestnut surname—as indicated in the 1860 and 1870 census enumerations.

I have no evidence or source for this supposition, and would greatly appreciate any hints or information anyone on this board might have.

Thanks very much,
John

I am also related to Anna. I have an obit from my Grandmother's Bible for Thomas J. Chestnut. It mentions a living sister (A.B.Woodburn). My Grandmother (Walkinshaw) married into the Chestnut family. About 4 generations back I lose it on the Chestnut side. I cannot get past William Chestnut and Jane Corriston. I'm trying to figure out what relation Thomas J. Chestnut was to my Grandmother Walkinshaw by marriage. She saved the obit for a reason!

Re: Chestnuts of Horry County, South Carolina

Seeking families descended from heads of households living in Horry County area, South Carolina in the first three censuses of the United States of America (1790, 1800, 1810 or earlier). It is well known that families traveled together and intermarried. By joining DNA studies we may be able to uncover links that have all but vanished. There are DNA tests for direct line male descendants called yDNA tests that trace direct male lines. There are direct female tests called mtDNA tests that trace direct female lines. And most recently there are FAMILY FINDER tests that locate people of any gender with sufficiently close DNA markers to indicate fairly close cousinhood between individuals in the study.

For information on such tests check any reputable DNA lab.

If you already have one or more DNA tests available and have ancestors in Horry County area prior to 1810, please consider joining the Horry County South Carolina DNA group.

If you do not yet have DNA tests, consider getting one or more. These can be obtained in a strategic manner to maximize the information—such as convincing a male direct line individual such as your father or brother to give a DNA sample and doing as many tests as possible on that individual. I have been lucky enough to convince two male second cousins, my father, and my maternal uncle to join. That means I am able to tell when someone is kin to one or two which line the match might come from.

Let’s knock down some brick walls!

Julia Norton
Coordinator, Horry County South Carolina group
Member Hawkins group
Member Norton group
I don't have any real answers for you; but the name Charles Chestnut caught my eye. Early say 1850 there were CHESTNUTs in N.B. Canada, PA. and in the South (S.C.?). Charles CHESTNUT was b. 1879 N.B., CAN., one of the younger sons of Robert CHESTNUT & Susan JOURDAN. He crossed into New England by 1900. He made it to UT. by 1906. There he m. Cora HESS who was b. in MI. They had one daughter and four sons by 1918. About that time the family moved to CA. for Cora's health. Cora died in 1934. By the 1943 Charles Jr., moved his family to OR. I believe that Robert & Susan CHESTNUT's other sons stayed in CANADA.

I`m looking for my greatgrandfather. His name was Charles Chestnut. He was married to Mary(Powers) Chestnut. They say he just up and left. They were married sometime after 1910. My grandfather, Charles Denny, was born in 1914. I found my greatgrandmother in the 1920 census in Ohio with Edward Brumfield. He adopted my grandfather and that is where I got my last name.

I just spoke to my father, he said he believes that we saw Vannie in Calabash, NC. It was all part of a large trip that spanned from Raleigh, NC to Seabring, FL in about 1991. I'm sorry for my mistake. It was a long time ago and I was a child. I met Vannie in a restaurant he and his family owned. From what I know his children were the last to run it. Unfortunatly, neither of us can remember their names.

I was just thinking the other night as to the actual date of my Grandfather's death (1961 0r 1961) When I happen to come across a web site and the first William K. Swan I came across in Huntingdon Pennsylania had a birth date of 02/03/1790 and his father was William Swan and mother was ELEANOR CHESTNUT. Because of items from the family and stories I've always been told and believed that a Grandmother of several generations removed by the name of ELEANOR CHESTNUT was my grandmother.

The fact of the Shade Gap area being involved made it more important because of my own fathers early years were spent in Shade Gap, PA. in a family grocery store. If by chance the same ELEANOR CHESTNUT is related to my Grandfather, WILLIAM K. SWAN and father WILLIAM RHINE SWAN, it would be a pleasure to exchange information.

William K. Swan, born Harrisburg, PA
