By marriage only (John and Thurza). I pursued it further because of the prison tidbit and the close physical proximity of the families. I was finally able to trace the White ancestry, but my Hideckers, who married into the family, are still a mystery. It's been nice talking with you. Happy hunting!

Yes, it was the 1855 state census. And I only found it by going page-by-page in the book (printed copy) I found at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. She's not listed in the index. She was my great-grandmother.
I knew why her father was in the almshouse. I hate to judge. I don't know what started him down that road. I do wish I could find our more about Frances' mother, Catherine Rouse. She is definitely a brick wall for me. I have not been able to find her marriage record to John Elliston, nor who her parents were. Even though Frances was raised by the Chichesters, she knew her sisters and knew who her parents were (they were listed in her death record). I have no idea if the adoption was formal, but I suspect not. I've not found any records for it.
So how are the Whites related to the Chichesters?

I had Frances in my database, but never followed through because the Chichester's were too far removed from my direct line. I am descended from a sister of John White, and I had been following him in hopes of finding clues to my White ancestors. I have not seen the state census where Frances is listed as "adopted" -- was this 1855? Do you think it was a "formal" adoption? I did some census work yesterday and apparently Frances was the fourth daughter born to John and Catherine. I think you are correct about the children's mother dying. The almshouse record lists John as intemperate and not likely to recover, which may be why the children were not with him.

I am actually related to Frances Elliston, the "adopted" daughter of Consider and Mary Ann. I had no idea about the Chichesters until the NY State census that listed Frances Elliston as their adopted daughter. Prior to that I just couldn't find her in census records until after her marriage to Samuel Campbell.
I'm sorry that I have no further info on the Chichesters than what I posted already. I'd like to know more to try to find out if they were related somehow, or how Frances came to live with them. I think her mother died soon after her birth, but I have no proof. She and her sisters were all farmed out. Her father was still alive, but he didn't have his children with him, and he appears on later census records with his mother. After his mother's death he died in an almshouse.

I think Consider also had a sister Thurza (1815-1897) who was first married to Perez Hitchcock (c1822-c1864), and later to John White (1791-1877). In 1846 Perez was imprisoned in Sing Sing Prison for life for murdering his father but pardoned in Aug 1859. Do you have any more information on these individuals? Would you happen to have any photos of the Chichesters?

Hello. I have replied once before to this post and I am hoping someone will respond. Since my last post, I have had a researcher in Alexandria looking into James Henry Chichester. Some people have had his father listed as Daniel McCarty Chichester. I can say after her research, that if Daniel McCarty is James's father, he is definitely illegitimate. Another researcher recently gave me info that James' father was Richard McCarty Chichester, brother of Daniel. I have not looked into this further but the Chichester family of VA are very well documented and Richard McCarty married Ann Mason and their children are documented as being 4 children and none of them with the name of James Henry. Marilyn...I would really like to speak with you as I am very interested in the information you have on Patsey's family. I have not found much on her but am thinking her father may have been Saul Martin.
Anyway, I have some various documents and such for James and Patsey and children but not much on James. He is quite elusive!
I am starting a Chichester project and have asked a Great Uncle to submit DNA. I am hoping that this will somehow connect our James to the VA Chichester family. I am hoping that all who have commented on this thread will reply so that we can share info. And if any Chichester reading this is a known descendant of the Virginia Chichester family (not of James) who might be willing to submit DNA samples -that would be wonderful! :)

I know He and Emily had two children. There is another half to our family that we have never met. If anyone has any information I'd appreciate it.

Hello all. I am a descendant of Saul Chichester as well. I believe that James H. HAS to be related to the Chichesters of Alexandria somewhere as one of the sons is named Daniel McCarty Chichester. But where? I am considering hiring a researcher to have a look for info. Has anyone done this yet? The only family info I have says that James H's father was from Alexandria and that they called him "Mack". And that his mother's family name was Bradley. But who knows if this is even correct. I also came across someone who had in their tree that James H and Patsey were separated. Apparently the story is that Patsey had an affair with a black man on a neighboring plantation and had a child by this man, so James left her. ????
I hope that after all this time, someone might have some info and we can finally solve this issue! :)
Kerry

Oddly, I am researching the Weeks family, but those from Vassalborough, Maine. They were originally from Nantucket, I believe.

I'm also researching Mary Chichester, whose origins are unknown. She was born around 1815, but census records are unclear as to where she was born. She lists NY, NJ and West Indies or Ireland (?), NY most often. Her sons list her birthplace as Scotland, England and Maryland. As you can see, I'm having to search for her in various places, so if you have any information on a Mary Chichester born sometime around 1800-1820, I'd be interested. She married Robert Clyde, a Scot and they had 2 sons, Isaac and William.

Thanks for your help.

I am also looking for information on the chichester family in Amityville. Did your Solomon Chichester marry a woman with the first name of Louisa and did they have sons named Israel and Irvin and a daughter named Grace. If you do I may have a connection. Solomon was probably the son of Isreal ( his father was Elijah and his mother Elizabeth) and his wife was Louisa. Solomon was born about 1869. His mother Louisa died sometime between 1870- 1875. Israel married Nancy Weeks 29 September 1875 at Christ First Presbyterian Church of Hempstead. In 1880 Solomon is living in Oyster Bay neither his father or step mother are listed. We find that his step mother married a man named Smith. Nancy Chichester Smith is buried with her brother Norris Weeks in Amityville cemetery. I am researching the Weeks family

Hi I am researching the Chichester family for my best friend who is a Chichester descendant. I have in my file that Lucius William Chichester was married to Helen Nellie Barrett 1865 MI-1931 MI. Her father was Charles Barrett and that is probably where the Barrett's name came from. Hope this helps. Carolyn Pruett, Columbus, IN

Hello,
Lucius Chichester was my great grandfather. My grandmother with Birdie A. Chichester Smith, his daughter. I'm curious about Lucius's wife's first name. There seems to be confusion about whether it was Millie or Nellie and also what her maiden name was. How does the Barrett family enter into the genealogy? As a child, we used to go to the Manistee cemetery to visit his grave. I see in the 1900 census, their neighbors are listed as Andrew Smith with a son Thomas. Those names fit with the rest of the family history. Birdie A. Chichester married Thomas C. Smith (my grandfather).
Any and all information welcome.
Tom Smith

Consider Chichester Greene Co NY 1800s

looking for more information on Consider Chichester. He was supposedly born Aug 1816 in Albany County NY, moved to Greene county when he was about 19. He married Mary Ann --- (maiden surname not known), who was also born in Albany county. so they could have been married in either county. He was married by 1855 (NY state census), and could have been married abt 1848. It appears that they never had children (at least none that lived). They had an adopted daughter, Frances Catherine Elliston who was only a year old in 1855, but was listed as Frances Chichester in subsequent census records. Frances was the daughter of John Elliston and Catherine Rouse and was born in Greene county.
It's possible that the Chichesters were relatives somehow.
Mary Ann died between the 1880 and 1900 census. Consider appears to have died between the 1900 and 1910 census.
Consider had a brother named Azar, who was married to Lydia and had a daughter, Clarinda (b 1838) who lived with Consider on the 1900 census. It appears that Consider was maimed, handicapped or bedridden (1880 census)
If any of these people sound familiar or you know any more about them, please contact me.

Hello,

I recently came across this post concerning Chichesters. I am researching Mary Chichester, born in New Jersey around 1815, who married Robert Clyde, a Scot, and with whom had 2 children: Isaac and William.

Does any of this sound familiar to you in your research? I realize the spelling is different, but I have no records with the "Chichester" name on them...just family lore.

If you have any information that sounds likely, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Deborah Weeks
Ok this thread is huge so I'm going to jump in here. I am now very curious about this Doddridge name. I have Chichester, Payne, Mitchell, Sydnor, McCarty, information as well as Chinn, Tarpley, Travers, Wilson. My road block is Wilson/Chinn marriage. Also they have a child with middle name of Doddridge also done by a neice or something - been wondering where that name came from thought it to be on the Wilson side as I had not seen it around the Chinns.

I ran across an interesting fact - may be worth followup: "England (General) Parish and Provate Records" Marriage Licences Issued by the Faculty Office, 1632-1714. August 1680; County: General; Country; England; 04 Aug 1680 Chichester, Richard Brangwin, Anna.
I am accepting this as the Richard Chichester who came to VA in 1702 bringing with him a young son, John who was baptised 10 May 1681.
My email is now: mumurphy@bellsouth.net

Hello Mike,

I see many messages about William Sydnor Chichester. I'm concern about the middle name. I would like to be the Sydnor but I also found records showing as Sonny? Is there something that proves the this middle name was a Sydnor? Thanks Brad Sydnor

Hello Mary,

I'm a descendant of Catherine Sydnor whom married Doddridge Pitt Chichester but also her sister had married Doddrige as well and her name is Frances "Fanny" Ann Sydnor. My (g) grandfather William Fauntleroy Sydnor is a brother of these two sisters. There were all parents of William Sydnor & Ellen Fauntleroy. I have full line of the Sydnor Family and same for Chichester. Thanks Brad Sydnor
Email: BkSyd@aol.com
