I didn't look up every reference to Holman, but in many of the ones I saw, the name Bagby was associated with Holman Childers.

Karen
It sounds as if we have a connection. I am so excited about that!
My email is jmas8320@aol.com Please let me have yours and if you are no longer on ancestry we can communicate.
Family stories are that Elvira was a full blood Indian. I think that she is Elvira Denton born in TN and raised in MS. Married Holman F. Childers, JR. in MS. The Holman jr. Childers family have in their family records that Holman and Elvira died in MS. But I think they went to AR and then to TX, if not him, then Elvira and her children.
My great grandmother, Sallie's first daughter, Edna Turner moved to Oklahoma in the 1920's looking for her Indian relatives.
If I have an email or snail mail, I can keep you updated on my progress with the Indian search on this side of the family!
Thank you for the prompt reply. You know much more than I do.

The John D that I am researching is my paternal grandfather. Due to a bitter divorce when I was an infant, I know very little about him. Since there seems to be several John Ds I'm having some difficulty in confirming the accuracy of the information I have gained through research and family stories.

I believe the John D you are researching is my great grandfather. I believe he was born around 1854. I believe he died in 1935 and is buried in New Mexico. My father was John Duaine. His father was John David. From what I know John David (my grandfather) was born in 1901 and lived in New Mexico and later moved to Arizona. One of his siblings was Mabel (or Mable). I know nothing about sheep herding. My grandfather was a sign maker/painter. I believe his parents were John D. (middle name unknown) and Julia Watson. I believe John Ds parents were Holman Childers and Elvira Frasier (although it sounds like you came up with Elvira Royal).

I know that as an adult my grandfather was very active with the Navajo tribe and did a lot of work on the reservation. He spoke fluent Navajo (?) and was even taught some tribal dances. We have been told that he was raised on the reservation for a significant part of his childhood and that he was half Indian, which is what I am trying to research. So far I've found nothing to substantiate this.

On a side note, I don't know how much longer I will be a member of ancestry, so if I don't respond, it is most likely because I am no longer a member.

The John D. Childers in my tree was born in 1853 in AR.
He was a half brother to my great grandmother Sallie Royal Wood. He had two sisters, Amanda M Childers b. 1851 in MS and Martha K. Childers b. 01 Feb 1855 in AR d.23 Nov 1931, TX. His mother was Elvira Denton(supposition)Childers Royal Busby Frazier.
Elvira Royal and her daughter Sallie Poole and Sallie's daughter Edna Poole were traveling with John D. abt. 1880 to New Mexico or Arizona to herd sheep and start a new life (family story). Near Colorado City, TX Sallie met and married W.A. Wood and the Wood couple, Edna Poole, and Elvira returned to Coryell county, Tx. to farm. John D. continued his journey to the west and settled in New Mexico (according to family stories my greatgrandmother Sallie told to her children)
I have never been able to find him in New Mexico.
Kindly reply and tell me if we could possibly be connected.

My research shows Columbia Southworth (1838-1927) m. Cyrus S. Childers (1838-1897)

Cyrus was the son of Joseph Kestor Childers and Alice Jones.

In the Harrison County marriage records of the 1830's, Alice Jones is listed as the daughter of a George Jones.

Columbia Southworth was the daughter of Enoch B Southworth and Mary Ann Jones.

Also in Harrison County marriage records of the 1830's, Mary Ann Jones was the daughter of a George Jones.

There is also record of another daughter of a George Jones being married in Harrison County named Eliza Ann Jones, who married Samuel Childers in 1835.

Does anyone know whether Columbia and Cyrus were first cousins? Was this George Jones the same man in all three instances?

I have researched his line for over 25 years and have over 5000 blood decendants in his family and can prove over 98% of them. In looking at the message boards, I notice that a lot of researchers have him as the son of Thomas Childers.
The 1900 to 1930 census gives varying states of birth. Did John have a brother-in-law Daugherty. if so you might check the 1870 & 1880 census for Scott Co, Tn. Artlund Childers(Art\Arthur Lindsey) wife Mary on 1870 and Lynsey and Polly on 1880. Son John still at home 1880.

Bill

You are lucky to have a bible and military records. My information on the children of Alexander Crockett and wives agrees with yours except, I don't have a Nancy Susan or a Clara Davis. I do have an Anna, I found her on the 1870 Spring River Twp, Lawrence, AR census. I went back and looked and can see how that could be read as either Clara or Anna.
I am very interested in Williams military records.

I descend from James Ritchie Childers, brother of Alexander Crockett. He had 5 sons, 4 of which (Finley, Hiram, James, and William) were killed in the civil war.
In the records I find.

1st Ark Confed. Mounted Rifles
Co E - The Lawrence Co rifles
Gen Thomas J Churchill

CHILDERS, ABSOLEM T., PVT - enr 20 Oct 1861 Camp Reeves, TX (see 11th TX Cavalry)

CHILDERS, HIRAM C, PVT - age 25 - enr 9 Jun 1861 Ft Smith, AR KILLED 10 Aug 1861 Oak Hills

CHILDERS, JAMES R., 3rd LT- age 23 - enr 9 Jun 1861 at Ft Smith, AR

CHILDERS, WILLIAM H, PVT - age 17 - enr 9 June 1861 Ft Smith, AR - see McCarver's 14th AR Inf.,- discharged 10 Sep 1861.

Hiram and James R are brothers, I thought William H was too. According to records the Pvt William Childers of Co E 1st AR died in Alton prison on 8 Oct 1863 of Smallpox and is buried there on Small Pox Island. So, what do his records say?

To make things more interesting I also find this:
CHILDERS, Absolem F. - Company E & A, Private, Enlisted 10/2/61 at Camp Reeves, TX, Wounded12/31/62 in the shoulder at the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN, Died 1/21/63 from wounds received

We know this is our Absalom, Jennie's Widow's Pension papers make that clear. Except he didn't die.

Isn't this a fun hobby?
Happy Hunting,
Nora

I also have not been able to find his roots but through the family bible and another relative's research I do have the names of all of his direct decendents. Many childers men were lost during the civil war
and later scattered throughout Arkansas and Missouri. Could you tell me what relationships you are lookng for and maybe I can help fill in the blanks. Regards, Teresa Johnson

I agree with you about recording all the variations of the Childers name. I note each spelling I find and a where I found it. Many of my early families have 4 or 5 alternate names.
I have spent years looking for Isom/Isam/Isham's roots and still have never located a birth record, marriage record,a family bible, not even a deed in Virginia. I probably won't live long enough to figure it out either, but it won't be from lack of trying. One of these days I'll convince my brother to do one of those DNA tests. I don't think I've ever seen a descendant of Isom Childers in the Childers DNA Project. It might take awhile, he's the type that won't fill out a census because it's nobodys business.
20 Jan 2012
from Warren Forsythe - genealogy126 (at) fairpoint.net
-
Wow!
What an awesome collection of original records form the Scott or Russell Co. VA area!!

An amazing number of Childers/Childress Revolutionary War soldiers seem to trace back to near Albemarle and Buckingham Counties in VA ca 1760 (before Amherst Co. was split off)

Even though I can show no family ties among them, those Rev. War vets seem to hang together in a grouping worth keeping track of together; so I've done that at
-
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...
-
I don't expect to live long enough to solve much of the mystery of how those Rev War vets might, or might not be connected in Albemarle and Buckingham County areas ca 1760 in VA--
But you certainly area showing one huge step forward in extracting so many more original records about their kin.
-
Maybe we'll soon be compiling more of our trees
where the spelling flexibility is nearly ideal--for instance
on the www.familysearch.org system that always says it's a few months form opening up those trees to the general public.
--
But until then, I feel forced to compile spelling variations explicitly, so that all of us who arrive with different pre-conceptions of proper spelling--
have the chance to see the available compilations under other people's compiled spelling variations.
~~Keep up the GREAT work, Warren Forsythe
genealogy126 (at) fairpoint.net

Married before 1798 probably in Lee, Russell or Washington Co. I found information that Joseph Blair died 1795 in many public family trees (Unsourced - I really wish there weren't so many trees that have as their only source - somebody else's tree.) . If its accurate, Lucy isn't Isom's parent.

Would like to learn more about Lucy (Unk) Blair Childers. Anybody have any idea about whether Elizabeth or Lucy was married to the constable who was the 2nd Abraham, first appeared on the tax record in 1797 and lived in the Lower Dist? And could this Abraham be Isom's brother? Sons of the Upper Dist Abraham?

And to Gayle: I've always thought the Isom Childers in IL, Rev Patriot was the one from North Carolina that married Patience Parker

Hopefully this will get the ball rolling

Thank you for your reply with which I agree. Shortly after I made that post, I deleted my tree above Isom because there just wasn't any supporting evidence.

Something that puzzles me is the existence of an Isom Childers in Illinois making application for a Revolutionary War pension, if I recall correctly, about 1818. I don't find him anywhere else and cannot connect him to our branch.

Childers/Childress folks were/are an adventuresome lot. I told my husband that his family was easy to trace. They moved from Germany to the Northampton/Lehigh area of eastern Pennsylvania in the 1600s and 1700s and never moved more than 10 miles from home. Most of the current generation are still there. I believe I called them boring and provincial. Tracking the patterns of my family is challenging and often frustrating beyond words, but never boring!
Gayle Childers
Texas

18 jan 2012
Warren Forsythe - genealogy126 (at) fairpoint.net

Parents of Isom Childers/Childress (1785 VA – 1841 AR) seem unknown;
So, hoping to promote more response and searching,
I posted a couple guesses at the following places on internet:

I married both records to the same spouse record
• Name: Mary Polly RITCHIE
• Sex: F
• Birth: 1794 in ,Botetourt,VA
• Death: 1851 in ,Lawrence,AR

The first record is posted under Isom Childers spelling:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&d...

and the second record posted under Isom Childress spelling:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&d...

BTW
Since I just uploaded to internet these new compilations, probably until late 19 Jan 2012, these would not be findable on the
overall rootsweb worldconnect family tree index at

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
