My James Wesley Glass married Sarah Ann Chitty (1833 Lowndes Co or Coneoh Co, AL) who was the daughter of Allen and Sarah Skinner Chitty and ended up in Texas. As a matter of fact they scattered from AL to MS to LA to TX. My mom's grandmother was Josephine Glass and Sarah was her grandmother. I have some on the family.

I am transcribing articles from our local newspaper archives (Scotia, Nebraska):

The Scotia Register
Volume XXXIII, Thursday, December 15, 1927, pg. 1, column 2
LEON LUSE AND LAURA CHITTY MARRIED
Leon Luse and Miss Laura Chitty, both of Scotia, were united in marriage at Rushville, Nebraska, on Friday, December 9th. Both of these young people are graduates of the local high school and were always popular among their fellow students.
The bride is the younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Chitty and the groom is the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Luse.
The bride, who has been teaching near Rushville, will continue with her school work until Christmas, at which time she and Leon, and the rest of the Luse family will leave for their new home in California.
This newly wedded couple has many friends who will send their best wishes along with them when they leave for their new home on the coast.

Julie Middendorf
mjmiddendorf@nctc.net

Mary Chitty Bundy Obituary

I'm transcribing obituaries from our local (Scotia, Nebraska) newspaper archives:

The Scotia Register
Volume XXXII, Thursday, September 9, 1926, pg. 1, column 1
HIGHLY RESPECTED SCOTIA WOMAN CALLED BY DEATH
MRS. MARY BUNDY PASSES AWAY IN GRAND ISLAND SUNDAY
The death of Mrs. Bundy has brought sorrow to many hearts, as she was a woman whom to know was to love. Living in Scotia so many years, she endeared herself to all with whom she became acquainted, and her sterling character commanded the respect of all.
Her death, after such a short illness, was unexpected by the majority of her friends, as they could not realize the seriousness of her illness. We believe we can truthfully say that not a person in Scotia had so many friends, who deeply grieve over her loss, and the sympathy of all go out to the sons and their families and the sisters and brothers who are left.
Her going leaves a vacant place that can never be filled, and she will always be held in loving remembrance.
Obituary
Mary A. Chitty was born in Carrol County, near Shannon, Illinois, February 13, 1858.
She was united in marriage to Obadiah B. Bundy, at Shannon, Ill., December 31, 1876. To this union two children were born, Walter W. now residing at Grand Island, and Frank L., of Scotia.
Mr. and Mrs. Bundy came to Nebraska in the spring of 1879, locating on a homestead near Cozad. In 1884 they moved to Scotia, residing here ever since with the exception of two years residence at North Platte.
When they first moved to Scotia, Mr. Bundy was an employee of the Union Pacific Railroad, and rode into Scotia on the first train coming into town.
Mrs. Bundy was baptized in the Presbyterian church in childhood and was a member of the Scotia Presbyterian church at the time it disbanded. She was also a member of the Modern Brotherhood Eastern Star and Royal Neighbor Lodges, and was recorded of the Royal Lodge.
Mrs. Bundy has led a very active life, enjoying good health until a few weeks ago. She was taken to the St. Francis Hospital at Grand Island, where on Sunday night, Sept. 5, she departed this life, having attained the age of 68 years, 6 mo., and 25 days. Her husband had preceded her in death, having answered the summons at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, on July 15, 1919.
She leaves to mourn her departure, her children, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bundy and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bundy, two sisters- Mrs. Saphronia Black, of Racine, Wis. and Mrs. Julia Baum, of Shannon, Ill., two brothers- George Chitty of Emporia, Kan. and Wm. Chitty of DeKalb, Ill., three half-sisters and two half-brothers and four grandchildren- Boyd, Wilber and Beatrice, children of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bundy, and Fae, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bundy, besides hosts of friends.

Julie Middendorf
mjmiddendorf@nctc.net

Hi Marlon,

Here is what I know, or think I know.

Charles Chitty was born in S.C. I have looked all over there and cant find him. Lots of Chittys in the Barnwell area. Even a Chitty cemetary there. Maybe you can have better luck, Note that that three-county area has changed around some since he left. You can search earlier threads for more info and the genweb for S.C.

Tilden and Minnie Spears were with Charles Chitty in the 1880 census. However it appears Louis Spears picked up Minnie and moved to the next county north (Clark) You can find them in the 1890 Clark county Childrens immuneration (sp). It appears she married a fellow you will find about three families up from in the census. You will recognize the name when you check the 1910? Jefferson Davis, MS census. There you will find Turner and Sarah and Minnie with the same last name as you will find in the earlier Clark County children's census. I didnt write it down, I just happened to notice it as I was researching. I dont know now what happened to Minnie's husband, if he was dead or gone at the time of the Jeff Davis census. No children were listed. I would imagine she remarried and had kids under another name. I don't know who Til married. Think he may have been in Louisiania for a while but not sure why. He died in California in the '30s.

He is what I think I know about the Roberts folks. I think William and Susan Roberts (Married in Sumter County,AL) were in Scott County,MS in 1870, had a 7 year-old son named Turner. In 1880 the 17 year old is in the Chitty household as a nephew.

Now here is the assumed connection: Willian and Mary J.E, Roberts Chitty are brother/sister. If you check the 1850 census of Sumter County,AL you will find William and Mary of the right age living with a Simmons family. I dont know why they are there. I hope you can have better luck looking. Might find some kind of "Power of Attorney" papers or other court documents for the kids. Roberts and Simmons is a very common name in that neck of the woods.

Turner died in about 1929 in Red River County,TX. Sarah died back in Lauderdale County at the home of her daughter Mrs R.L. Potts in 1939. For what its worth I talked to some one who remember seeing Sarah when Sarah was old and she was a child. Remember her as a tiny indian woman with long braided hair living in a small cabin the Potts place. Long time ago and memories fade.

The usual disclaimers. If you discover more let me know.

Bill

Hello Bill,

I have research only some on this line, but I have heard from a cousin that the "Chitty Homestead" is still standing in Alabama. I'm not even sure which Chitty family it belonged to. Anyway just wanted to touch base with you and share what I have. I'm wanting to make sure my research is right and if I'm lacking any vital info. (which I know I do)

Charles M Chitty B-1824 South Carolina, death-unknown
Mary J.E. Roberts B-1832 Alabama, death unknown
married Sept 29, 1852 in Lauderdale County, MS
Children: Sarah A Chitty B-1854, Married Turner Roberts
Susan Chitty
Margaret E. Chitty b-1855, married Louis Spears, had two kids William Tilden & Minnie
Tabitha J. Chitty, married Frank Ware on 4/7/1891 in Lauderdale County
Willie Chitty (female), William Murphy 8/4/1891 in Lauderdale County
Charlie Chitty

William Tilden Spears/Roberts was my Great Grandfather. What has happened to his sister, Minnie? I know I seen her in the census latter, but nothing else.
Who was the father & mother of Charles M. Chitty? Who was the father & mother of Mary J.E. Roberts? (Was it William & Susan)? Exactly how was Turner Roberts related to her?

my line--
Charles Chitty
Margaret Chitty/Spears
William Tilden Spears/Roberts (Raised by Turner Roberts & claimed them as parents)
Minnie Roberts/Cupples
Nila Virginia Cupples/Ebey
ME
Both Bag0bones and Bill contacted at the same time, so I thought I'd reply to both of ya'll the same.

Thanks to both of ya'll!!!
Marlon
Courtney can you go back any farther than Ocie? Charles Chitty (my line) and other Chittys came out of south Carolina in the 1820s and 30s. I know at least one went to Texas. Bobby Chitty out of the Houston area used to post here. Bet you could help you. I have often suspected he was a brother to my Charles Chitty, born in 1823, but cant find a connection. Charles stayed in and died in Lauderdale county, MS

Bill

I don't have much collateral info from your side, but I have some info about Till Roberts and his family. With the help of kgalendo she told me where he was buried. Our family wondered for years because he left just before 1920. My grandmother used to mention family names, one of which was Truman.
Wondering if we could share info?

Thanks,
Marlon Ebey

I forgot to mention that the Chitty family did indeed come from England and were very wealthy family at one time. I remember my grandfather saying that the ancester that left England for America was a Duke. I cannot remember his first name, but you might try starting there. I can't remember what year they left England but that part of the family came over to Louisana and there are still Chitty's in that state.

Debbie, my dad confirmed that his aunt Margaret married a Larry Carulla, so if you are their child, I am the child of your first cousin Charles Chitty, son of Charles Chitty.

looks like you have been doing more family research than I. I had never found the name William Chitty (your g-grandfather) until I saw one of your posts. any information you would like to share I would greatly appreciate!

Debbie, that sounds right! My father Charles has a sister Kathleen and they had a brother James (d. 1991). I just found his son, James Chitty jr. (my first cousin) in NYC.

I think I remember my dad talking about an aunt margaret.

I believe that Charles, Kathleen & James were children of Marie Chitty nee Meehan with Charles Chitty, son of Isabella Chitty (husband might have been James, of this thread subject??) he had several brothers (James, Arthur, George, also a sister Helen. I think but dont know for certain)

on their mother (Marie's) side there was an uncle Edward, who had mild brain damage and lived to be fairly old, in nyc and pennsylvania.

I dont remember if Margaret was aunt on materal or paternal side? any info you have would be very much appreciated!!

my dad (Charles) has 3 daughters and lives in nj
Kathleen has 4 children, mostly in pennsylvia
James had one son, that I recently located in NYC. he has had no contact with the Chittys prior to this so I am catching him up on things.

thanks!
