Hi: Yes, I am still researching information. It would be helpful in verifying any Native American ancestry, as my research has revealed this as well. I think someone else has also research it in April 2010 and found a Native American connection as well.

Hi Jim and Brandy,
The CHOCOLATE surname has shown up in my research of my WEEDEN,WEELDON,WHILDEN,WHELDON,WILDEN/BROWN AA/Native family line for which I have yet to make any connections.
Family lore tells of being FPOC coming from England as indentured servants w/VA kin (WEELDON)and Indian ancestry.
BUT, I find my ggrandfather, WM LAWRENCE WEELDON, Black, first, in 1870 Wilmington, NC, so must assume that he was
a slave of the WHEELDON/WHILDEN family of Christ Church, SC.
I do know that my ggrandmother, CHARATA BROWN (WEELDON), was Native American (born 1833 NC), but fail to find any
info on Her or family.
In VA, it appears that the family was kin to RICHARDSONS,REDDICKS and many others, but many postings have
brought no responses, and no one claims kinship.???????
Hoping something here is of interest, and that you will contact me.
Most sincerely,
carol wheeldin warren.

Hello, Brandy

I'm doing research on my father side of the family. The Thomas Chocklin, that you are referring to is listed in the Cenus; with a wife name Amy, and their children.

On my Great-Uncle Death Certificate is list Abner Chocklin(
Thomas and Amy Son) as the informant. This was in 1919 when my Grandfathers oldest brother died.

What was puzzling to me" was his parents were alive at the time so why weren't they the informants.

My conclusion, was My Great-Grandmother Pheobe McCall my Great-Uncle mother, Had a sister name Sarah,I believe Sarah married Abner Chocklin.

They all lived in Richland Parish, LA. As I stated I;m still doing research on my father side.

Your last posted messages was 2006, is you are still
looking for information, or if I can assist you in someone
way please! feel free to email me

lolitad863

Hi Jim: Thanks for the reply! I think that this information fits my research as well. However, the Census records seemed to be a good source, but at times repetitive, spellings are incorrect, birth dates, or dates in general were incorrect.

I know back then many did not keep up with their birth dates, did not care, or did not know. This is especially true as to the slaves. Jane Chocolate has come up in my research. Somehow, she is the mother or wife of one of the descendants I researched. I am unsure which role is played, as many Chocolates (or the variation of) had several children (some of which had similar names as their parents such William).

This research is interesting. One thing I do know is that no matter what research you obtain, no one can refute that Chocolate (or the variations of) is an uncommon and the families with these surnames are somehow connected.

Hi Brandy

My research has lead me to new findings and even more
questions. I have picked up on the 1840 and 1850 census
with a Nancy Chockolate from Pittsylvania Co. Va., She
( or least a Nancy ) shows up with a household of one male
(age 40-50) three females (10-15),(20-30) and (50-60). I
assume that she was the one ( 50-60), so it is possible that
she is the mother of three children and is widowed ?

The other possible connection is a Jane Chocklate from
Pittsylvania Co. Va., b. 1836 or (1834) but living in the
George Moore Household. She married a Joseph Jennings
in 1854 and moved to Dan River Twp ( Danville ?) had 7
children and is traceable to 1910. The connection appears
to be in that her mother is listed as Lucy Chocklate.
I found a Lucinda Chocolate ( no "k" ) in the 1840 census
from Powhatan County. This listing shows only freed
slaves ( three females ).

Let me know if this fits with your information.

Jim Chocklett

Hi Jim: Thanks for responding! My research is similar to your research. I have had a difficult time trying to locate records, as the surnames vary so much. Please review my family tree. I am no where near finished. I have attached tons of documents that I have found. However, I am unsure whether the individuals are the same, as the times and surnames are not totally matching. Some of the family members that I have found were either mulatto, black, or white.

Searching for Caucasian and African American "Chocolate" family members

Hi: I have created this thread in hopes of reconnecting and completing my family history--the Chocolate family. Since the surname "Chocolate" is not common, I am positive that most people with this surname are related somehow. My family consists of the African American side of the Chocolate family. Due to slavery and illiteracy at that time, my family did not consistently spell the surname the same. Therefore, there are variations of Chocolate, such as Chocklet, Chocklett, and Chocklin. This is the same family. My great grandmother was Bertha Chocolate, who had several sisters and brothers. Her father was Tom Chocolate, who married twice, and surprisingly, he married two women at different times with the same first name, Amy, thereby, making them Amy Chocolate. My grandmother vaguely recalls that Tom Chocolate's father was William Chocolate. My family history consists of mulatto, white, and black individuals back then. If anyone has any information in assisting my family and I or if you think there is a connection with your family lineage, please feel free to respond. Please refer my family tree information on Ancestry.com Thanks! Brandy
