Our last name

It's fascinating for me to see that there are people who are interested in the name "Choi". I was born Choi Hyuk in Seoul, South Korea to parents Choi Jin Kook and Choi Hyun Ja. When we immigrated to the United States in 1978, our last name, actually pronounced /che/ or /chay/ became Anglicized to Choe, pronounced /cho/ by myself and my family (although the name Cho is a completely different surname in Korean). The names Choe and Choi are simply various spellings of the same name I believe. This name is quite common in Korea, possibly the fourth most popular surname after Kim, Park, and Lee. In other words having the surname Choi would be akin to having the last name Smith, Jones or Brown here in the States. From a historical contest the name means "to draw a bow". Well, I hope this information helps anyone who is interested in the names Choi and Choe.

I'm sorry. My husband's grandfather came to
Hawaii almost 100 years ago. We have some
distant relatives on Kangwha Island (outside
Seoul), but we've never met them. You should
know that Korea has very few last names. In
order of frequency, they are Kim, Lee, Park,
then Choi.

Good luck, Kathleen

Hi James, I think you can find your uncles and aunts as long as they are alive. Pray to God. I know there is an office helping reunite separated families in Seoul. Also, there might be an online service. Please find the website and register your father's name and some description about their profile and situations when they are separated. I will also try to find out the possible offices to get help. I am professor of Taejon University, Taejon, 300-716, Korea. phone: 011-82-42-280-2424
My home is:
110 Lake Forest Ln.
Jackson, MS 39056

Pleased to be of your help. Good luck.

Hi I admire you are trying to find your root. As you know Korea proudly has a very long history longer than 5000 years. Some scholors say 10,000 years, still digging out the old times. To my kowledge the recoding of the family tree started from Korea dynasty about 1000 years ago. In the case of my family the recording of the family tree is seen from about 800 years ago. Our ancester settled in presently Haejoo city of Whanghedo, North Korea, called Haejoo's Choi. There is a large volume of name records. So, if you know the origin of your family and exact Korean name, I think you can find out your father's brothers and sisters and your relatives. If you send the specific origin of your last name I might be able to help you find the location of storing dcuments and the first grand father's memorial place. Hope this will be a helpful advice. Good luck.
