Elizabeth Chisholm married to Sanford Chowning

Searching for any information on Elizabeth Chisholm born about 1839 who was married to Sanford Chowning of Scott County, KY. Their children were: William Brown, Charles Horace, Martha B, Alford Sanford and James Walker. Elizabeth was my 2nd great grandmother and I am hunting for any information (even the slenderest clue!) that might assist me in correctly identifying her parents or any of her siblings. Thanks!

(This query was also posted to the Chisholm board.)

I'm very interested in communicating with you on this line. Have you checked Coles Co., Illinois, in 1850? I have a sister of his, Almariah Chowning. The children were orphaned, apparently, and all were split up -- as near as I can tell.

I have a copy of a court case where they were sued by their father's creditor -- as his heirs. My email is lisakaymckinney@yahoo.com

Ok, you have Henry son of William & Eliz Chowning born June 21 bap July 12 1741? Then he married Eunice Baily per marriage bond, Lancaster Co., VA 24 Aug., 1769. I have the translation from the Northern Neck of VA Historical Magazine not a copy of the actual record. Henry second marriage is listed in the Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesx Co., VA. This is to Margaret Allen on 11 Sept 1785. His death is listed in that same register under Capt Tuning for 11th July 1795. There was a Will of Elizabeth Collins around 1804 which listed Bailey Chowning son of Henry Chowning dec'd..., this is my ancestor and I've never had to prove any of the others. But was given their names. I email a cousin who is from Henry's son John who married Elizabeth Lilly. James, Anne and Elizabeth are from the second wife Margaret Allen.

I am a direct descendant of Medwell Cowning mentioned here. I am very interested in any of my family history that can be provided. I have visited the homesite in Barnesville,Missouri, near Lathrop and have sen the gravesite where some of these folks are buried. Can the information you have obtained be copied for myself and my children, so we may also carry on the family heritage. Thanks.

I have court records from 1777 and 1781 which list Henry as a Commissioner of Roads and being on a Grand Jury. The DAR has accepted them as Civil Service and he will be added as a Patriot in the DAR's records. My line is Henry's son Bailey and I had a copy of the Will of Elizabeth Collins which stated Bailey son of Henry Chowning. I don't have anything which lists Henry's other children. The court records for his estate does divid the land in 8 parts but it doesn't say orphans of Henry or children of Henry. So I'm still looking for documentation listing them as his children.

Middlesex Co., VA Court Records 1838

This is a confusing record from 22 Jan 1838 page 115 but some of it makes sense. Thomas Street is the exector of John Chowning, dec'd. And he is giving several accounting for different estates. Whoever recorded them used the word "same" if I read it right it means same as proir person in the record before. Anyway here is the translations:
A further account of same (meaning Thomas Street) executor of John Chowning, dec'd orphan of Wm ?(an initial) Chowning orphan of same, having been settled before a Comm. of the Court ?(two small words) is ordered to ?(one small word) for exception"
So is John dec'd orphan of Wm or is Wm orphan of John dec'd? That word "same" is confusing the issue

Would love to know more about this family. Have just received info linking to Thomas Chowning and Hannah Doggett through their daughter Sarah Chowning's marriage to Mason Kelley.
First had to determine if the family was from Henry County or Henrico Co., VA. Answer: Henry Co as per tax lists in 1800.
Is Parthenia's middle name actually "Wilkerson"? My source listed William Coleman Chowning and Parthenia Coleman Chowning as siblings. Is it Coleman, Wilkerson or something else?
Is there an online source with more on Thomas Chowning's military service?
