Surnames: CHRIST CRIST KELLER SCHMELZER SCHOLL WEDDING
1. CHARLES1 CHRIST was born about 1850 in Alsace, France, and died after 1900. He married PHILUMENA FRANCES SCHMELZER Bet. 1874 - 1876, daughter of ANSELM SCHMELZER and MARGARETHE KELLER. She was born October 15, 1856 in Logan, Hocking, Ohio, and died October 01, 1904 in Washington, Daviess, Indiana.
Notes for CHARLES CHRIST:
According to family tradition Charles was born in Alsace/Elsass and came to the United States to avoid conscription. His birth date and birth place are not known. In the 1880 census for Corning, Perry, Ohio, he claimed that he was 30 which would indicate that he was born in 1849 or 1850. In that census he also claimed that he was born in Germany. Germany took the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871-1872 so he may have answered the question on the basis of who was currently in power in 1880 and had been for nine years.
There is a ship record for the "City of Antwerp” that arrived at the Port of New York City from Liverpool on July 31, 1871 only 12 days after France declared war on Prussia. It would seem that this ship would have left Liverpool before the actual declaration of War but perhaps war was widely anticipated. If Charles was 21 or 22 in 1871 he would have been a prime candidate for conscription.
Charles Christ’s movements and whereabouts 1871 to 1900 are sketchy but that might be expected of someone employed as a blacksmith for a railroad that was being built. Apparently he was in Shawnee, Perry, Ohio (or at least Minnie was) for the birth of his first child, Charles. In 1880 when the federal census was taken he was in Corning, Perry, Ohio with two young sons, Charles and Pawley (Paul).
From the "History of Perry County, Ohio" by Clement L. Martzolff, published by Ward & Weiland, New Lexington, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio Press of Fred J. Heer, 1902, pages 92 and 93 we learn that Perry County was an active mining area. Shawnee began its existence in 1872, and that Corning was laid out in 1878. Both mines and railroads would need blacksmiths for their operation.
Charles was naturalized Oct. 11, 1879 in Fairfield County and his sponsor was Ambroise Larger who was born at Fellering, Alsace, France and who had CHRIST kin at Bitschviller-les-Than, another village less than 7 miles away from Fellering in the Thur Valley in Alsace, France. I do not know if or how Charles might be related to these Christs but I would not be surprised if one of these is his native village.
Children of CHARLES CHRIST and PHILUMENA SCHMELZER are:

He was killed in a gas explosion that leveled several buildings in October 1941. John Anthony CRIST is buried at Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland.
