Hientze Christ registered his citizenship in the town of Herbetsvil near Gansbrunner of Solothurn Canton, Switzerland in 1423 along with his nephews Heini and Johann Christ. They had arrived soon after the expulsion of Germans from Bohemia, which had been involved in a religious war for 13 years. 1423 also marked the first printing of the SOLOTHURN FECHTBUCH, a medieval hand to hand combat book. Soon thereafter, the first firearms production in Switzerland began in Solothurn. Armies of the various Swiss Cantons began using war wagons for defense. War wagons were used in the decisive defeat of the Burgundians by the Swiss in 1506. The war wagon construction technology and the fire arms were both brought to Switzerland from the Germanic refugees from Bohemia. Swiss land was accorded Free State priviledges by the Holy Roman Empire. Most of the land in Bavaria and Franconia was owned by diocese. Besides Hesse and Meissen, the only place these people could find land to farm was Switzerland. Many of the last Germans expelled from Bohemia called themselves Orphans of JAN ZIZKA. The Catholics issued the last name of CHRIST to wards of the church, or orphans. Many people fled to Bohemia after lands were lost by the Count of ANDECHS' descendants in Ebermannstadt in 1390. Maybe these people were the ancestors of the CHRIST family.
Adam Christ, b.1668 in Wuerttemberg, delivered his sons, HEINRICH, JOACHIM MICHAEL, and GEORGE to Governor's Island, NY on June 13th,1710 on the LYON of KEITH shipping co. consigned to Queen Anne's service. ADAM was employed as a sailor and returned to Europe. HEINRICH and GEORGE were adults and JOACHIM MICHAEL was 9 years old. GEORGE arrived at Tulpehocken in 1729 to take charge of the farmland that JOACHIM MICHAEL and his party of young adult settlers had begun to clear in 1723. Joachim Michael Christ then went to Shepardstown VA to pioneer areas from there. In Virginia,he met & married SUSAN BISHOP of Exeter, PA. They then moved to Exeter,PA. Daniel Boone, born in Exeter,PA, went to Shepardstown some 20 years after. Heinrich's son Henry Jr., Became a Captain of the same regiment that the younger Adam Christ was deployed in. The elder Adam Christ returned to visit his newborn grandson & namesake in 1742. Arriving on the ROBERT & ALICE at Philadelphia on 24 SEP 1742, Adam and his wife ANNA MULLER (with umlauts) resided in Northkill (Reading,PA) for a while. Adam died in NEUENBERG AM RHEIN after 1746. He had at least 3 children who stayed in Wuerttemberg. MARIA CHRISTINA CHRIST, Adam's granddaughter was an ancestor to the SILVAO-GOMES family in BRAZIL!
George Christ arrived to Governor's Island, June 13th, 1710 on the LYON, of KEITH Shipping co. consigned to Queen Anne's service. His father, Adam Christ was a sailor and returned to Europe on board. He was accompanied by his older brother HEINRICH, and 9 year old younger brother JOACHIM MICHAEL CHRIST. A will dated 1774 belongs to THIS George Christ. Another George Christ arrived to Philadelphia in 1751, then settled in Longswamp, PA which is in NE Berks County. A last testament dated 1770 belongs to George of LONGSWAMP. The Tulpehocken area where our George lived was near Bernville, PA. JOACHIM MICHAEL CHRIST arrived to Tulpehocken from Schoharie, NY on 13 MAY 1723 along with 14 other young men to clear the land for farming. George later arrived in 1729 to take over the farm. Heinrich's son, Henry Jr. was a Captain in the Revolutionary War in the same regiment as George's son Adam. Joachim then went to Shepardstown, VA to pioneer and clear lands. He met and married SUSAN BISHOP of Exeter, PA at Shepardstown. They later moved to Exeter, PA where Daniel Boone was born. Mr. Boone later went to pioneer trails leading from Shepardstown to KY and south. George's other son Johannes George Christ inherited the farm and passed it on to his descendant, Johannes Christ, b.2-17-1789 d. 3-20-1867. Johannes' brother, William Christ, b. 1775 ventured to work for himself as a carpenter- fence builder in Dauphin County, later settling in Lebanon, PA. He is my 4th great grandfather.
THE OTHER GEORGE CHRIST (Longswamp, PA.)
He arrived to PhiLADELPHIA from ROTTERDAM along with mom's ancestors on the HMS EDINBURGH on 16 SEP 1751. Many relatives were with a Lutheran congregation from Altdorf, Alsace who, a few generations later, their descendants became the majority of the RIVER BRETHERN church in Elizabethville, PA. This George settled in Longswamp, PA- on the northeast boundary of Berks County. I am searching for more relations of a JACOB CHRIST of Ingwiler, Alsace,1657 to see if this George is from that branch. (Jacob moved there from SOLOTHURN).

George Christ, Brooklyn, Socialists?

My great-grandfather George Christ was born in Brooklyn c. Feb. 15, 1863 and died in Brooklyn of TB March 25, 1895. He was a tailor. He married Catherine Iloff of Cherry Ridge, PA on July 14, 1883. Their surviving children were Henry, George, Irvin John or John Irving, my grandfather. George was buried in Holy Trinity RC cemetery in Brooklyn.

I believe this is the George Christ living with his widowed mother Maria in Brooklyn on the 1870 and 1875 censuses.

The family story is that the family emigrated from Germany to avoid persecution as Socialists under Bismark.

Best guess is that his father's name would have been Henry, George, Thomas, Irvin(g), or John married to Maria, maiden name unknown.

Does anyone know of Christ relatives buried in Holy Trinty cemetery or have any information linking to the above details?

My great-greatgrandfather was George Christ b. 1862-3 most likely in NY and died in 1895 in NY. Children Henry b. 1886 (his children George and Henry-Robert), and John Irving b. 1895(my grandfather) George,b. 1884. The family was German and it is possible his mother was Maria Christ born in Bavaria. His wife was Katherina/Kate/Catherine Eiloff/Iloff

My Agricola family comes from Germany my 3rd Great Grandfather was Ryno Julius Theodore Agricola born in Ohrdruf, Saxe-Gotha-Coburg on 1-2-1827 he married Julia Offenloch in New York City 4-27-1853 after they travelled south and settled in Marietta, Georgia where they had 11 children, Amanda was their 4th child but was thei 1st surviving child. Amanda married FEA Schilling another German immigrant that settled in Marietta as well. I dont know much about my Agricola family past RJT, I beleive his father was Johann Friedrich Heinrich Agricola and mother was Elisabetha Wilhelmine Kromeyer.
I would like to get further information on this family and my other question is if there was a brother or cousin named Heinrich or Henry that was in Atlanta around the same time according to census records he was a baker and so was RJT Agricola
Thanks for any information anyone might have.
This George was in Annsburg, NY of the Schoharie Valley Towns along with Johann (Jaochim) Michael Christ. Conrad Weisner attests to the presence of Adam, George's father on the ship. The homestead property was located 1 1/2 miles east of Bernville, PA. So, this would be registered as Northkill Twp, as Penn Twp. was called back then. I find no tax record for this property. But I did find a Geo. Christ s. m. (single male) owning 40 acres in Douglas Twp. in 1769. Could it be possible that original settlers were exempt? Thanks for your info and questions. they are interesting and help me find further details for my research. Please keep in contact with me. I think we may find our particular ancesters soon.

The William Christy married to Elizabeth Miller at Stouchsburg, are my 4th greatgrandparents. Where they came from and where they ended up is what concerns me. I've never found a birth date or death place for them.
George Christ, widower, married to Elizabeth Kutzmueller, had 5 minor daughters when he died in 1761. George born in 1777 is their grandson . The George who died in 1774 came from Pfungstadt on the ship Mortonhouse in 1729. I have the George who died in Longswamp in 1770 as the son of
Henry Christ.

Brenda Creasy presents a list of Christ Marriages with William Christy(e) and Elisabeth Miller being married on 12-3-1801 at Christ Lutherna Church in Stouchsburg, Berks. The German tradition of surname suffices according to widowship or paupership (disowned), has been ignored by every account of this record. Widows +(ers) may add the 'in' ending to their surname. People in debt or disenfranchised ended their name with an 'e'. Other sources claim that this was a Scotsman named Christie, but I found the Scotsman born in Cumberland County.

I have a Johannes George, widower, marrying Maria Elizabeth Kutzmueller on 6-30-1752 at Christ Evangelic Lutheran Church in Tulpehocken. Later, a George Christ (maybe Johannes) being father of the baptized John George, born 3-31-1777, baptized on 4-27-1777, witnessed by George Mueller at Altahala Church in Rehrersburg. I 've found two Georges, one arriving in 1710, the other in 1751 with contemporary deaths in 1774+ in Tulpehocken and 1770 in Longswamp respectively. Please share any info you have of a third George in Berks County. The Johannes George, widower I estimate to have been born soon after settling the farm in Tulpehocken (by Bernville) between 1730-1732.

I would really appreciate anything you can find on William Christ, either the one born c1775 or his son William who is buried at Schaefferstown. Which one of William's sons is your line? I've tried for years to find records of the elder William's birth, marriage or death but found nothing.

There may be no records. Johannes George, son of George who arrived in 1710, inherited the family farm east of Bernsville. The farm passed on to John Sr., Jr., then Johnathon D., who sold it to the Yoder family in 1896. Adam, the younger brother of Johannes George received 130 acres at E. Buffalo Twp. from the Pennsylvania govt. for his participation in the Revolutionary war. William, born circa 1776, by a biology I read approx a year ago & I'll find it to send you, arrived to Dauphin county, working as a carpenter and fence builder, aned later moved to Lebanon County before he married Elisabeth Miller in Stouchsberg,Berks. Family lore left my father claiming that he was the 6th generation carpenter. More family lore claimed that we are descendants of a George Christ. I only recently found the proof of Johannes George existing as the son of George, and the father of John George, who by lack of legend or documents appears to have died young.

I found an Anna Maria, Daughter of George. Greenwich twp. closer to Longswamp twp. than to my ancesters at Bernville, Penn & Tulpehocken twps. Berks county birth and baptismal record states. born about 1775, baptised on 2/5/1775 at Blue Mt. Church. 'Longswamp George' arrived at Philadelphia on 16 September 1751 on the HMS Edinburgh along with several of my mother's ancesters, the MATTERs from Rotterdam- originating from Altdorf, Alsace, France. Anna Marie may be his daughter as decendants of 'Tulpehocken George' were born to Johannes George at 1775, T-George's son.

It sounds like you have been busy! Yes, I agree, we must be related. I have traced the Christ name back to Ernest Konrad Christ who came here from Germany. He married Jennie Burnett Wilson. They had 5 children (Jennie, Ernerst, George, Emily and Fanny. I can't find much information for Emily or Fanny. Do you have any information? Did they marry? Also, my great-grandmother, Jennie Margarethe Christ, moved to Wisconsin sometime between 1910 and 1920. I think she was divorced and moved to Wisconsin, but we really don't know why she chose Wisconsin. Any ideas?

Thanks, Sara

Sara
I think we are related! Was Ernest Christ your great-grandfather? My great-grandmother was Jennie Margarethe Christ. She was a sister to Ernest Christ. The Stanley Works and political involvement match my information too. My great-grandmother moved from New Britain to Wisconsin, where she lived when she died. She was married to Burton Collins when she lived in Connecticut. I don't have much other information about their lives there. Following is the listing: Martin Christ, age 33, birthplace Bavaria, Magdalena, age 26, birthplace Bavaria, Peter, age 26, birthplace Bavaria. On familysearch.org, I found Magdalena Christ, baptized 30 Jan 1822, Parents-Georgii Jacobi Christ and Agnesiae Weiss, Georgius Petrus Christ, baptized 4 May 1824, Parents- Georgii Jacobi Christ and Agnesiae Weiss. I did not find Michael Christ listed in the 1850 census household. However, he was listed on familysearch.org as Michael Christ, baptized 6 June 1832, Parents-Geogii Jacobi Christ and Agnesiae Weiss. All three - Magdalena, Peter and Michael - were baptized at the Katholisch Kirche Eschbach, Bavaria. Could someone give me some aid as to what I need to do next. I am at a loss. Thanks.

CHRIST family in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

Henry LEIDIG married Ellen SAYLOR in about 1853. Ellen was born about 1838. They had at least two children: Martin (born 1881) and Naomi (1883-1959). Naomi married Adam Leo CHRIST and had at least one son, Martin Joseph CHRIST (1907-1969) and Martin had a son, Bernard Martin CHRIST (1937-1977). All these family members lived in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. I am searching for the parents of Ellen SAYLOR. Her mother was definitely named Sophia and her father MIGHT have been Fredrick SEILER, but I have no proof. I am descended from Ellen's brother, James (1829-1872). Can anyone help me with these families?

Hi Cynthia -

Sorry it took a while to get back to you! I did speak to my mother about it and it turns out we are probably no relation.

We are descended from Georg Christ of Schenken, near Wüirzburg, Bavaria, who moved to Hausen an der Zaber, in Württemberg after marriage in 1799. The family there was George Andreas b. 1814>Ludwig Andreas b. 1844. The family immigrated in 1853 from Hausen and my great-grandfather Andreas Friedrich was born in 1872 in Buffalo. There are no Adolphs in the family that I know of.

When I visited Germany a few years ago and spoke to an expert in Wüirzburg, it was explained to me that "Christ" is a fairly common surname for converted Jews from that time, so there may be many German Christs out there who are not directly related at all. I don't know how much validity there is to this, but it does give another idea for places to look.

Georg is as far back as we have been able to find records; he was the wine steward at the monastery in Wüirzburg which is usually a hereditary position so hopefully the church will have records dating back further.

If I'm right, I believe we are third cousins.

I've located Adolph's grave and the group of graves around Wilhelmina's at St. Matthew's. My Ggrandfather's grave is there. I would love to see photos. Is Frederick and Sophia Vesper buried there? I would like to hear more about your family line.
Hi,
I don't know anything more about Adolph's siblings or parents. Adolph's daughters name is actually Adeline not Adelheid, it was a misspelling in the census. Adeline married William Kohl. They are my great grandparents. The Christ's, Kohl's and Vesper's are buried in St. Matthews cemetery on Clinton and French in West Seneca. I have some photos if you would like them.

Dear Patrick Lyons

The roman catholic parish is St. Peter in D-64646 Heppenheim.
The local historical society (Heppenheimer Geschichtsverein) edited the third "Sippenbuch Heppenheim a.d.B." with all families from 1741 to 1809. So it's not necessary to use the original register.

Please look at:
http://www.bergstrasse.de/geschichtsverein-hp/
link: Sippenbücher
there at third row (Vol III): - Namensregister (pdf)

Kaspar Weismantel and his family are mentioned in volume III - but different data. Please contact me direct (link at the mentioned website).

Manfred Bräuer, Heppenheim, Hesse, Germany

Sehr geerter Herr Bräuer,

I will be searching for my ancestor's baptismal record in Heppenheim (an der Bergstraße) soon. Kaspar Weismandel was born in Heppenheim circa 1745 and died in 1800 in Bûrstadt. Since the family was Catholic would you know which church in Heppenheim to consult?

Many thanks,
Patrick Lyons, Rancho Cucamonga, California
I'm hoping to make contact with fellow researchers.

I'm trying to find out more about my GG grandfather Adolph Christ, b: 1840 d: 9 Sept. 1890. He as born in Prussia and immigrated around 1860.

I believe he was also called Frederic Adolph Christ. He worked for the NY Central RR building wagon cars. He was also a property owner, at 884 Smith Street.

He was married to Wilhelmina Vesper and had they seven children: Frederick, George (my ggrandfather), Emil, Martin, Adelheid, Clara & Louis.

I'm trying to locate siblings and his parents.

Thanks,
Cynthia
